Everyone here seriously needs to think for more than 3 seconds. Do you seriously think they'd do a bomb test with a completely unpredictable bomb with some dude next to it, filming? No. Obviously not.

Just to clarify, this is not a bomb trial. It's the earliest trials for the "CND" project the allies explored during the war. "Cameraman Never Dies" was then used in the field, which is why we have so much footage from the perspective of the Allies and almost none from the perspective of the Axis

These were called "Dam busters". The bomb skipped across the water until it contacted a dam, then 💥 BOOM. It was designed to destroy dams powering German industry during WWII. The process was perfected and used to great effect. Their raids were at night.

Actually, they hardly ever hit their target and eventually banned because they are so hard to control. But when they did hit the intended target, they were successful.

@strokethatcuzzo this is real. Its called the bouncing bomb, and was used to destroy several dams in Northern Europe that were controlled by the nazis during world war 2. The squadron that flew the mission became known as the dambusters, and they had to fly their modified Wellington bombers through winding canyons, line up with the target, drop to 75 feet and reduce speed, and then release the bomb. Think star wars trench run, but the trench is like winding road. Only about a quarter of the squadron survived the mission, but they succeeded in destroying the dams, which pretty much destroyed the German war effort. They even had a black squadron dog named "nigger"
In one of my fluid dynamics classes we learned about these bombs. I believe they were given a reverse spin which generated enough lift to allow them to skim the surface like this. This effect was used to launch bombs at dams because they were most vulnerable to damage at the base.

The bomb made for the dams in Ruhr Distrikt, where much bigger, about 5 tons, had to be carried by Lancaster heavy bombers, these bombs, dropped by DH. Mosquito where used against, against ships and ship locks

@@benjamin5370 umm no, the footage is slowed down and the wood was hit by a bouncing bomb that was traveling at least 250 mph, that shit did exactly what a pile of wood should have done under those circumstances.
This was a half tonne test bomb called 'Highball' intended to hit ships. Primarily ones laid up protected by netting, like the Tirpitz. It was dropped by an incredible plane largely made out of wood, called the Mosquito. Both the bomb and the plane are testament to the madcap ingenuity of British wartime industry.
@@thairatcatcher Yes indeed, after the success of Upkeep, Barnes Wallis and his team thought they could expand the concept to a smaller scale bomb carried by faster, lighter bombers. Tirpitz itself was actually taken out by large Tallboy bombs, two direct hits and a close miss caused it to rapidly capsize, eliminating the primary target this weapon was intended for, so the Upkeep bomb remained more famous.
Mosquitos were gangster to the max. Zippo on radar, heavy endurance, tons of out of work carpenters back home to work on them. The whole story is something every engineer was required to know when I was in school.
Highball was intended to be used against Japanese shipping using DH Mosquitoes flying from aircraft carriers. The war ended while they were on the way out. Test pilot Eric Brown proved that a plane which stalled at 115 mph could be landed at 80 mph and stopped by carrier arrester gear. He was the first to land a twin on a carrier and the first to land a jet on a carrier.
