In the event of breaking down in a desert in the US dial 911. Even without phone reception you will get in contact with the police using 911, explain you have broken down and have no cell service and dialing the 911 emergency hotline was your only option to get help. They will take note of how many people are with you and what conditions they are in and either dispatch a tow truck or medical services alongside it.

Pennsylvania resident here. This is accurate. My parents hired the Amish to build a two-car garage for them a few years ago. They showed up at 8:00 am and were gone at noon. The whole garage was built. They left to go to another job to build a second. So they built two entire two-car garages in one day, plus whatever else they needed to accomplish that day. And this sucker was a quality build too, I might add. I don't know how they do it!

I’ll give context to the New York one. The preceding joke, which probably isn’t in the compilation due to time constraints or something, was a joke about Italy or New York before the “invention” of pasta or something like that. I think it’s something along those lines. It’s from an episode where Chris was going to fail a history test, so Brian and Stewie give him a history lesson with more of a personal touch to it. The guy in the New York scene is the Italian-American actor. Tony Sirico, who played the part of Paulie Walnuts in a drama about the Mafia we had here in America titled “The Sopranos”. He also is the voice of Vinny the dog in Family Guy

Yes, the fan who grabbed the foul ball was Steve Bartman. It happened at Wrigley Field in Chicago at the Cubs playoff game in 2003. Some felt it cost the cubs a trip to the World Series which they hadn’t been to since 1945. Bartman eventually went off the grid and moved out of his Chicago home. Sad to see how people were so cruel to him. Awesome video!!!

*The Cubs were four outs from winning the National League Championship in 2003. The last time they won the pennant was 1945. In 2016 the Cubs won the World Series, but it had been 108 years since the last time. But when they won in 2016, they gave Steve Bartman, the man who innocently interfered with the ball in 2003, a custom made World Series Ring, in an effort to provide closure to the whole unfortunate situation. When the Cubs won in 2016, it had been 108 years, since they won the World Series. You should react to the last innings of the 2016 World Series, or react to Secretariat winning the Triple Crown in 1973. He won the Belmont by 31 lengths and still holds the record for all three Triple Crown races.* ⚾️ 🏇

2:14 I live in Arizona. The only place I haven't had regular phone reception in the desert was around the north rim of the Grand Canyon and some places on the Navajo Indian Reservation where some Navajo friends took us hiking & camping. There's very little on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, which is not desert but beautiful green rolling hills and I didn't care because I work in IT and nobody could reach me on that vacation day!! However it is well patrolled by the reservation's police force so if you're on the roads where you should be, you are not going to be stranded for very long. It's critical to always carry at least two gallons of water for each traveler. There's not a petrol problem here as long as you fill up wisely. The biggest no-petrol problem is along US Highway 50 in the high Great Basin/desert of Nevada but not if you pay attention and fill up regularly. The biggest lack of petrol station problem is going to be in Alaska where you'll want to carry extra cans.

For the most part, you'll get help from passing vehicles when broken down if you stick to major routes (like interstates). You should plan and prepare beforehand though for wherever you're going. Tools, water, food, jackets, etc. There are a lot of areas where you can travel a road and not see anyone for hours. Sometimes there's cell service in those areas and sometimes there's none. Some remote areas have call boxes while other's have taken them out. Some states and areas of states you can get gas like every block or highway exit. Others can have areas like that while also having areas where the next gas station is 100+ miles away.

The Indiana joke is centered around a McDonald's SuperBowl commercial in which Indiana's Larry Bird (and basketball legend) plays Michael Jordan in a game over a BigMac with the joke being that the shots they have to make getting more and more elaborate. Massachusetts had that exact theme song in their tourism ads. Rhode Island parodies another alcohol commercial where someone is sitting on a pristine, quiet tropical beach and the camera remains focused on the drink. The joke about North Dakota is that it's 50th in tourism. (51st if you count DC, 57th if you count the territories.) I don't know if they still do it but at one time they jokingly issued tourists certificates congratulating them on having visited all fifty states on the presumption that that was the only reason to visit North Dakota.

The desert used to be a real problem, to the point that there were signs warning about the 50 or 100 mile distance to the next facilities. But I think now with so much truck traffic and increased police patrolling, the numbers of dire and tragic incidents have tapered off. Where the guy says "You want to be a star?", and the dress falls, the guy is Walt Disney, cartoon mogul, and the girl is Minnie (Mrs Mickey) Mouse ... a sick but still funny stab at one of our greatest icons. In a promotion video, Walt Disney once stated that "Walt Disney doesn't smoke, Walt Disney doesn;t drink, Walt Disney doesn;t use foul language". In the industry, he was notorious for all three vices. But his point that the image "Walt Disney" was a wholesome and principled being far superior to himself was well taken.

"Catching Hell" is one of my favorite 30 For 30 documentaries. I was an immature high schooler when the incident happened in 2003 and thought it was funny, but looking back now it was really messed up the way Cubs fans treated Steve Bartman. The majority of fans would have reacted the same way and reached up to catch that foul ball. Very few would have backed up and give Alou a chance to make the catch. I'm just glad Bartman got to witness his Cubs win the World Series and I hope that eases some of the pain he had to go through.

As for the cell service... most areas including the desert have cell service.. it may not be great, but you can generally make a call most of the time. Also, most major interstates/highways in the US have call boxes every couple of miles. The call boxes connect you with emergency service so if your car breaks down and you have no cell service (which is rare), you'll have no issues getting help.

In long roads, especially desert ones, they have a lot of warning signs about carrying extra gas and supplies in case you are stranded. They will tell you how far the next gas station would be. I drive across the middle of Australia and there were times where we would have a straight road for at least 30KM and gas stations would be ~100KM apart. It's a ton of fun, though. It's also the same in colder climates. People die every year in their cars because they get stranded without supplies and freeze to death or die of dehydration.

They were low on gas, turned off everything in the car, including heat, just to last a little longer. They got lucky and found a house with lights on. He went in and begged to be sold a can of gas. The owner was considerate enough to help. They might’ve frozen to death otherwise. Our own experience in Alaska wasn’t as extreme, but we got locked out of the rental car on a mountain. In the along the Highways are signs telling you how far the next Gas station, Food and/or Rest Stop. You need to be very aware of these while driving in the Southwestern States. I would always top off the tank just in case. But the most common occurrence is your car overheating so you want to have water in your car for you & your car. And unless you are on a backcountry road, and even then sometimes, your best bet is to stay with your vehicle. If you go walking during the day the heat can get your and at night there are no lights on most of the road. From personal experiences people stop more to assist in the deserts, they know it can be life or death very easily.

06:20 You’re right! Steve Bartman at Wrigley Field as a fan of the Chicago Cubs vs. my Florida (now Miami) Marlins in the 2003 National League Championship Series. Moises Alou (former Marlin on the 1997 World Series Championship team) had a chance to catch the ball and end the game pretty much for the Marlins and send the Cubs to the WS. Instead, Bartman caught the ball, and afterward the Marlins scored some 8 unanswered runs and won the series against the Cubs and then the WS. Good memory James!

From Arizona, you're unlikely to get stuck in any desert here if you stay on the roads. All the major highways have plenty of traffic. If you stray off the major highways you're probably not going anywhere interesting.

There is normally cell reception as long as you are close to a major road. Also, there are signs that warn you, Last place to get gas for the next 100 miles, etc.
@OldPhartbsa
@OldPhartbsa 2 года назад
Driving across the desert takes some planning, have some drinking water, some snacks, etc. Have an idea of where gas stations are and the distances between them. These days there's seldom a stretch of road without a gas station within 100 miles. But back in the 60's/70's there were still 'Next Gas 200 miles' markers on the road. You didn't take chances back then.

@joels5150

Watching this reminds me of how notorious Family Guy is for doing cutaway gags, where a character will reference something and then they will show another scene paying off the joke. Several of these clips are those cutaways, but without the previous scene included, you miss some context. For example the Virginia scene is an American Civil War re-enactment, from the Confederate perspective. Historically, the Northern (Union) Army led by Ulysses Grant defeated the Southern (Confederate) Army led by Robert E. Lee. Obviously the joke is a revisionist history in which the South wins with no real explanation given as to why.

That’s just a few jn Oklahoma. Every little town across the USA has something to stand out along Route 66

Cell signal is usually pretty good except maybe in the ocala national forest in Florida at least that I know. Cell signal doesn’t go very far into there as above the canopy is good signal but below you’re lucky to find a single bar. Also the Everglades beyond the casino hotel you aren’t getting anything out there. Key west is good cell service. You may find the occasional dead zone in the city but at least one carrier will cover fine.
