My late husband and I, during a stay in Chicago, had a scary encounter with the Secret Service. If looking out of your hotel window, you see questionable people in dark clothing, unpacking equipment from duffels on an adjacent hotel rooftop, back slowly away from the window. You now have 2 options. 1. Call hotel front desk and report it in the event that the roof people aren't supposed to be there. 2. Grab your binoculars for a better look. Well, apparently my binocular lenses glinting in the sun from my higher up position was enough for them to storm our room. ...and no, they don't knock first. After searching our room top to bottom and everything in it, reviewing hotel security footage, and drilling us about our intentions since birth, I was warned to stay away from the windows with my binoculars or any devices. The crazy thing is that when I was looking at the agents through my binoculars and even before, not a one of them showed any indication that they saw me watching them at all. Lesson? Don't ever. ever. ever. ever. ever look out of your hotel window with binoculars. Ever. LOL **Fyi. Clinton was visiting Chicago.
@brianeleighton
@brianeleighton 2 года назад
Part of the reason the Secret Service stormed your room is because the glint of your binoculars looks the same as the glint from a scope. What you were seeing was the Secret Service snipers setting up a position. They would guaranteed be looking for glints like you produced. After all, they are trained to spot other snipers.

I do agree with what you commented. I was, for about 20 years the Director of Security/safety for a 600 room hotel having been a police officer prior to that and an Army veteran before that. We did a lot of presidential visits over the 20 years I worked in that capacity. Every thing in this video is true. The secret service has a lot of say in determining where the President stays. Fortunately/unfortunately the hotel I worked at had a lot of features the Secret Service liked. A separate entrance near the service elevator with an enclosed canopy entrance close to the service elevator. I worked closely with the secret service, as usual, prior to the visit and afterwards after the President left while they were breaking down their command post. On one occasion an agent called me on my cell phone and asked if I had any staff on the roof of the hotel, 23 stories up. I though, god I hope not. I got on my radio and asked if anyone was up there, our chief engineer radioed back that he was. I said, Tom, is there a red dot on your chest? He radioed back, yeah there is. I told him to get off the roof and to not pick up anything that resembled a gun barrel. The next day I provided him with a t-shirt that had red cross hairs on it. It is funny now but could have been tragic.

The Secret Service is also present for other high government officials. One such event was an annual banquet for military personnel at the convention center. But this particular night the guest list included members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, following 9/11. The Secret Service was exemplary in their duty and as long as my staff and I followed an advanced list of do's and don'ts, we never had any uncomfortable discourse. Just for info, once a person was cleared "in" that person stayed "in" till the event was over and their charges left the building. In other words, as the bar manager, don't forget the corkscrews.

In 1983, President Reagan held a rally at the mall where I worked. The stage was set up near our access corridor for trash and deliveries. Over a week before the rally, the advance team came in to secure the area. They had special phone lines put in and had agents guarding the installation and the lines run through the access corridors every 20 feet, 24 hours a day. I worked for Chick-fil-A at the time, we had a large walk in freezer outside in the access area that special forces used as a staging area the day of the event. Had a couple of friends that worked elsewhere in the mall that were given 5 paid days off because of their juvenile arrest records. All deliveries had to be rescheduled, rubbish piled up in the back hallways and close to 250k people showed up for a concert and to hear the President speak. It was CRAZY!!! But very interesting.

Knowing this, there are often plain clothes agents in the crowd also to handle other threats. Depending on the situation, helicopters, small drones, window rooftop snipers are also observing. My son and I were visiting Washington DC and we were outside the white house south lawn fence taking pictures with at least 200 other people. Suddenly the secret service came out and forced all of us across the street. Why? The president's dog was coming out to play on the lawn! The DOG!!!! IT WAS HILARIOUS!

I think they put "Secret Service" on their jackets as a warning to people to stay far away and not mess with them, although the name is ironic. If they just put the word "police" on their backs, most people wouldn't be too threatened. However, if you saw the words "Secret Service", you would know the threat level is pretty dire and you'd better mind your business and keep a serious distance from them!

I was at a conference at a hotel in Miami some years ago. On my floor we were all quizzed as to when we were leaving. If it was after x day people were moved to another floor. Unfortunately I wasn't one of those being moved. There was hammering, sawing, drilling, etc., going on for days. Wish I had been moved.

Years back when Bush senior was the VP running for President He came to where I worked secret service got a surprise, so did I. Having to work on two different floors but told to stay put. I needed to go down a stairway. Ran down made the turn and bang. I almost ran into him. Bush was there. He saw I was nervous but he immediately called off the Secret Service agents. We shook hands and I immediately started talking about serving in the Navy during WW2. I was a disabled Vet who also was on a carrier and worked the flight deck. We both knew we truly had a common bond. I’ll remember that moment forever. But the Secret Service was completely surprised by my appearance there.

I was working doing construction in san francisco, and one of the presidents were going to a factory 2 buildings away. Our whole building was told no one can be on the roof until the visit was over. It was funning watching a white painters van ladder on top and all, and then when it parks, guys with sunglasses and black suits pile out of the back

So the food part was pretty interesting because I remember a few years ago, Biden came and visited my hometown of Reno and he went to a local ice cream parlor I worked at and got a chocolate ice cream cone… but I remember the people with him watching my coworkers and I very closely…. So I’m not sure if it changed or if that rule only applies to the President… but he was still pretty guarded.

The Secret Service are also under the Treasury Department and are the agency which investigates counterfeiting and other treasury crimes. (Thus also the obsession with ink) They were called the Secret Service before the time in which they wore identifying logos or uniforms. It was uncommon at the time for law enforcement to be allowed to go around without identifying uniforms. Secret Service basically means federal agents in plain clothes. Groups like the FBI would not come around for a very long time. So having Federally authorized agents walking around in cognito was a big deal.

Systema and Kenpo are pretty much on par with each other. Kenpo deals on take-downs, disabling the opponent(s), and finishing them off. I've almost killed my instructors and mates in matches. I am not proud of this. It also teaches you to not engage in a gunfight. I disagreed. This is why you need to mix the mixed martial arts styles to your preferences. Kenpo and Jeet Kune Do are a great combination to start with. After that, it's up to you how to disarm and apply knives. Ya want guns? Just buy 1, 2, 3, 4? I don't care as long as you're not on a list.

The Secret Service acquired its name before "secret service" was associated with espionage. At that time, government intelligence was very much ad hoc and for a long time was a State Department function. The Service was and is a part of the Treasury Department, hence it also investigates counterfeiting. If it was created today, it would likely be part of Homeland Security, perhaps a part of the Federal Protective Service, which is an agency charged with security of federal buildings. POLICE is commonly displayed on the combat uniforms of all agencies, regardless. It's immediately recognizable. FBI, SECRET SERVICE, ATF, etc., may appear on jackets during field investigations of an incident, because identifying the agency is important in those instances. One thing about the U.S. is that there is an almost uncountable number of policing agencies at all levels. More than 30 different police agencies have jurisdiction where I sit right now. Because their mission so much depends on tracing communications and writings, the agency is the preeminent agency at analysis of things like cell phones and computers and, as the video said, identifying inks and paper. (Also important in the counterfeiting role.) A combination of ink and paper may not always be of much use, but if one or both may be of such limited distribution that it may lead to video store records that suggest suspects. They also can identify all known printers, including color printers that place discrete codes with serial numbers in each page of printed output. This is a legal requirement, also tied to counterfeiting enforcement. All those services are available to other law enforcement agencies. Protection really does extend for life. With Lyndon Johnson in retirement, a staff of agents lived at LBJ Ranch. After his death, agents assigned to Mrs. Johnson accompanied her and traveled every day with her into Austin to her television station. (Some of them complained bitterly that she had them running mundane errands during the day.) Very active retired presidents, like Jimmy Carter, required a large staff of agents to protect him as he traveled around the world on humanitarian missions and worked building homes with Habitat for Humanity.

Initially ex-Presidents received Secret Service protection for life. Ex-1st Ladies receive Secret Service protection for life unless they remarry after death of ex-President or they divorce the ex-President. Also the kids of ex-Presidents get Secret Service protection until their 16th birthday. Congress changed the law & limited SS protection to 10 years after the end of the Presidency. This was due to Reagan. Because of his Alzheimer’s he remained at home for the last several years of his life. This meant the SS was just hanging around doing mostly nothing on taxpayer money. However after 9/11 one the new post-9/11 security laws was reinstating lifetime protection.

It covers only SS tactics but the name is because they were originally a "secret service" of the Department of Treasury established in 1865 to combat counterfeit of US currency and was tasked with protecting the president in 1901 after the assassination of President McKinley which is the dual mission of the Secret Service to this day and each area has greatly expanded to include such things as protecting many persons in high powered positions and safeguarding the US financial system.
