British Couple Reacts to 7 Harmless British Words Americans Might Find Rude 

In America, I’ve always heard it, pronounced and seen it spelled “tidbit”. This video is the first time I’ve ever heard it or seen it spelled a different way.

My Texas daughter got in trouble at Harrods department store when the security man wanted her to take off her rucksack. She just stood there looking at him trying to figure out what he was asking for. He started to get upset when I finally figured out what he wanted. I said to her , I think he wants you to take off your BACK PACK. We laughed ab all the word differences.

We still say poppycock. There's even a snack food by that name.

When i was a kid, men used rubbers to cover shoes in snow and slush. I know a woman who has a brother who was an exchange student to England. He changed his nickname from Randy to Steve ( middle name).

"Tidbit" means a small piece in general; that's why some people use it to mean "a little bit of information" and other people use it to mean "a little bit of food".

Tidbit is standard here in the South. I recall being amused when I found out the cute little birds that moved into a birdhouse were called titmouse. named after the end point of a breast and a small vermin, LOL. I vaguely recall rubbers being used to refer to rubber boot or shoe covers. These days I only know it as a form of birth control.

One of my roommates in college had been an exchange student in the UK. Another student asked him if he could borrow a rubber. He had to pause before responding...

Chav is not generally known in America. However, one of the funniest moments in Doctor Who was when the mind of Billie Piper's character Rose was supplanted by the mind of an entitled, posh, elderly woman. The villainess then looked in the mirror and was pleased with being young and pretty again then she looked at Rose's outfit and declared in horror "Oh my god, I'm a chav." I fell about with laughter, my campions were just confused.

When Lawrence first said "eraser" I thought he was saying "razor" because he pronounced it e-RAISE-er, whereas in the States we pronounce it e-RACE-er.

Hi from Oklahoma and I've heard and used 'Poppycock' since I was a kid.........that was 7 decades ago.......

He's left out a few that are actually used in both the UK and American and have profoundly different meanings. For example, "graft". I had a visiting professor from the UK in college accidentally cause a near incident when he said that a group project I was on was clearly the result of graft. He said it more than once and, seeing as how "graft" in America means cheating, bribery, and fraud we were all immediately ready to have it out with him. Of course cooler heads did prevail and we figured out that in the UK "graft" means hard work. So everything was alright in the end. Another one is "knock up" which apparently means to go over to someone's house or flat or whatever and knock on their door. In America, it's a rather rude of of saying that you got someone pregnant.

That's so strange. The Great Tit looks very similar to the bird of my home state of Maine called the Black-capped chickadee

Never heard of chaff except “separate the wheat from the chaff”… I suppose the chaff is what you get rid of so it makes sense as an insult.

I heard one of these phrases at a meeting held at the GE aircraft engine plant in Cincinnati, Ohio. We had just lost a big contract to a competitor and the head of that plant gave a moral boosting speech. This guy was British; he used to work for Rolls Royce. At the end of his speech he said, "Work at your new assignments and keep your peckers up." We all looked at one another and said something like, "Did he really say that?" When I was young boy I remember watching an episode of the Merv Griffin show. Merv's announcer was Arther Treacher, who was British. They were discussing the fact that the use of the phrase "bloody" this and that was being discouraged in England because it was considered somewhat obscene. I had seen many WW2 movies that used this phrase a lot but I didn't know why it was considered to be obscene until I took a sex-ed class that covered female hygiene.

I'm not bothered by "chap" although it seems a little out of date or "old-fashioned". I almost never use it when speaking but sometimes when writing.

A more relevant one to visiting: the word “homely” does not mean the same thing. It essentially means “ugly” in the USA. Don’t ever say someone’s house is homely.

For whatever it's worth, I haven't heard anyone use the word 'rubber' (here in America) to refer to a condom in a long time. It was fairly common up until the 1980s or so, and i suppose some people may still use it, but nowadays most people just skip the euphemisms and say 'condom'. So it's strange that this example is still so often cited.

An interesting item is a small bag or pack one wears on their belt to hold small carry items. In the UK, this is a bum bag. In the US, it is a fanny pack. Fanny refers to bum in the US. Different part in the UK. Always gets a look in the UK when an American lady bumps her butt against something while walking and says I hit my fanny.

Poppycock is occasionally used in my area of the US. I use it myself, but kids will laugh.

To me, poppycock is a caramel corn based snack mix with nuts in it. I know it the other way too. But it hasn't been popular for anything other than the snack mix since before I was born, and I'm 50. 🤣

Poppycock is still used in it's truest form in the rual areas of the east and southeast where the daily cleaning of barn stalls and stables is commonplace. My guess is that most city folk....especially the younger generations (less than 40 years old) probably wouldn't have a clue what that word means.

Everyone in the US. I've known. Uses Tid bit.and has no problem at all with this.

I found out a few years ago that banger is weird form of racing and cars in the UK and parts of Northern Europe

My father was stationed in England when i was about 5. My mother told me of a trip to a local shop I made with her along with my pet cat. The cat jumped from my arms and i said "come here you little booger." My mother said the ladies present were aghast and berated her for allowing me to use such language. It was years later that I discovered there is a huge difference between an American "booger" and an English "bugger." A booger is just a bit of dried mucus.

Not just a word, but the English phrase Knock 'em up in the morning is rude in the US. Chap, to me, is an older English term for guys or lad.

At the beginning, I couldn't tell whether you were saying "chap" or "chaff." If "chap," I didn't know it has a negative connotation. If "chaff," I've never heard it used in reference to a person. Americans are familiar with the word "poppycock," although it's perhaps less commonly used than in the past. I think of the delicious popcorn-and-nut snack Poppycock. I wouldn't hear "banger" and think it was vulgar, unless the context made it obvious. We say both "rubber bands" and "elastic bands." By the way, we pronounce "eraser" as "er-RAY-sir."
