I think the lesson we can all learn from the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder is to be prepared ahead of time and not wait until you are in the middle of of a situation to do something.

And this explains why your neighborhood grocery store is packed with people the night before any time the word snow is in the weather forecast.
@krazycatz

You got that right. Back when Laura Ingalls Wilder was a child (and even when she was first married) the majority of the people in the USA had to raise and grow their own food. Whatever you had to purchase you would purchase long before it was wintertime and you would make sure you had enough to last for the entire winter. Don’t forget that you would also need to make sure you had plenty of firewood or coal to for cooking and to keep the section of the house the entire family is living in warm. One way they make sure that they would not run out of fuel is they shut off part of the house and only lived in a small section of the house. Of course it was also necessary to provide for your animals for the entire winter assuming you had livestock.

The summer in southern Texas is like 2-1/2 months of temps above 100 degrees every single day. but the extremely rare dusting of snow means hundreds of car fly off the road at 100 mph, as if they still have friction on the road! They have no skill at winter driving. (Or any other time for that matter)

Here in Middle Tennessee we average 4" per year which I know is nothing compared to the northern states or Canada but on Monday alone we got 8". The big difference down here is we have no infrastructure to deal with that kind of snowfall and subzero temperatures (-4°). We just don't have the systems to clear or remove the snow so as of today (Thursday January 18th) I've been snowed in since Sunday night. The bright side is I got to watch more of your videos...as well as Lawrence's. Lol🥶

Be mindful of wildlife and chuck some food out in the yard, as a glaze of ice can make usual foods unreachable. Even stuff like the can of grease that you can't put down the drain is basically suet and highly prized by birds in winter.

In the 1800s on the Great Plains during a blizzard people would stretch a rope between the house and the barn so they could find their way back to the house in the blinding wind and snow. People in 0 visibility blizzard conditions were known to have missed the house completely to wander onto the prairie and become lost and freeze to death.

I live about 2 hours north of Laurence, and had to deal with this exact blizzard. I cleared my driveway before I went to work so I could get into my driveway when I came back home. When I got home, there was already 6 inches of snow piled up. We ended up getting about 14 inches of snow total, and that doesn't even include the snow we got earlier in the week. The snow plow drivers put salt down to help melt the snow, but when snow comes down as fast as it did, the salt doesn't really work that well. Because of this, the snow on the roads ended up turning into a slush which made it really difficult to drive in. We had approximately 35 hours straight of snow, which made it almost impossible to get all of the snow cleared in a timely manner. The part that sucked even more than the snow was the following day the temperatures plummeted into the negatives. All of that slushy snow ended up freezing to the road, and turning to ice which has made driving even more difficult. We have had about 6-7 days of driving on ice, as the temperatures didn't get above 0 degrees Fahrenheit until yesterday (Wednesday). We had 2 consecutive days where the temperature never left the negatives, and we had temps as cold as -13 Fahrenheit with windchills as low as -35 Fahrenheit. I had to shovel in those temps, and I literally couldn't feel my face, hands, or feet after about 10 minutes of being in those temps.

Got the same Blizzard that his Chicago on Friday here in North-East Wisconsin, ended up with around 14 inches, on top of the 4 or 5 inches we got from a smaller storm Tuesday/Wednesday and the one inch we got on Thursday. So a Lot of snow last week, this week has been artic air blowing in making it dangerously Cold. Today has been the warmest day so far at 14 degrees F, Tuesday was the coldest at 3 degrees F, and that's not including the Wind Chill which was making it feel as low as -40 degrees F. Super Storm Sandy that dropped 18 inches of snow then froze it with the wind chill factor and that's on top of the actual hurricane! There were others but these were the most memorable ones. I just had to check the snow amounts.

At my last military base the nights were minus 15 degrees F. That's 15 below zero. The high winds brought the wind chill down to -50 and -70 below zero. I was out walking, stopped for 20 seconds at an open pay phone (in the old days) and hung up the phone. I turned and heard a light crackling sound. One side of my body had a thin sheet of ice on it from the mist. For 41 days straight the temperature never got as high as freezing for even a minute. Two people who were used to living there died of exposure shoveling the snow off their front steps! And yet the Air Force base was fully operational. Period. Love your show.

I watched this video on Lost in the Pond the other day. I love his videos. And I love your reactions to his videos. I live in Seattle and we get rain in the winter...lots of rain. But when it turns to snow it does tend to close us down. The issue with Seattle is it is a very hilly city. Most of the time the snow is like what you were describing on your intro - a few inches and people drive no issues. But, if it gets more than a few inches and roads get covered it can be pretty bad. Last year or was it the year before (can't remember), we had snow that stuck around for a week and the roads turned to ice sheets at night. With the hills it pretty much kept most people at home. I can't imagine the midwest. at least it ain't hilly. In terms of weather - I hate wind the most, especially winter wind. And yes, his problems all started when he ordered Fillet-o=Fish. Ugh Karma said-nope you order that and now you must suffer white out conditions on your drive.

Depending on where you go, summer can be fairly harsh. The American south is imcredibly humid. A wet heat can be hard to adapt to if you're not used to it. You'll definitely want to check the average temperatures of the states you want to visit. I live in VA, and it's not unusual to experience temperatures over 90°F during the summer. Modern Winters aren't as severe as when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s. However, they're not nearly as much fun as they were (for childhood me) since they now mean work (shoveling), and difficult traveling (getting to and from my job). That being said, the absolute worst Winter weather I've ever seen was "Ice Storm '98" (often referred to simply as "The Ice Storm". I think you may have reacted to a video about it. But it covered most of New England from into Canada, west into New York, and (I think) into Pennsylvania. Personally, we were left without electricity for about a month. I remember seeing one of the electrical workers who had written "don't ask" on his hard hat. Fortunately, we had a kerosene heater inside, and a gas grill outside (both of which came in handy for heating food and drink).

Definitely don’t come in the summer. Most of the USA gets incredibly hot or incredibly hot AND incredibly humid in the summer. You can’t handle the temperatures. Even people who are used to them regularly get heat stroke. Please visit the USA in the spring or autumn. Outside of that, cities act as insulators, so Chicago is actually warmer than the surrounding countryside. Much of the Midwest gets much colder, more regularly.

There was also a blizzard in Florida in 1898. Records weren't kept much earlier than that, but we haven't had one since 1918. I have seen snow here in Fort Myers Florida on occasion but, that's only when I was roofing years ago if I was working 3 or more stories high on really cold, for Florida, days. We could see it falling but it melted before reaching the ground. However, in the winter of 1978 it did snow. Not alot but it was on the ground. Newspapers nationwide reported the event. The New York Times headlines read, "Snow in Miami." lol

@JPMadden

I live in Rhode Island, not far from the ocean. For most winter storms, the relatively warmer air over the sea lessens the snowfall or changes it to rain. However, there's one type of storm where the snow is heaviest along the coast--the "nor'easter." Other storms come from the west, from inland. But a nor'easter comes from the southwest, along the coast. It's like a hurricane in the winter. Since warm air is capable of holding more moisture, when these storms get far enough north to reach freezing temperatures, epic snowfalls can result. Presumably due to climate change, we haven't had one of these blizzards in several years. Older folks here still talk about the "Blizzard of 1978," when I was 8 years old. The primitive weather-forecasting computers of the time predicted light snow during the early afternoon of a weekday. So, there was no thought of cancelling schools or issuing a travel advisory. Instead, 24-56 inches (61-142 cm) fell during 36 hours of high winds which caused zero-visibility and enormous snow drifts. Tens of thousands of adults and children spent the night wherever they were--workplaces, schools, shops, and other public venues lacking food and beds. Thousands of people abandoned their cars and walked to shelter--a church, a fire station, even the home of a stranger. Travel was impossible for days. The military had to fly in equipment to clear the roads. According to Wikipedia, there were 100 fatalities and 4500 injured. Today, we at least know when a storm this severe is coming. But people still die, like one year ago in Buffalo, New York

December 8 - 6:00 PM It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow! December 9 We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a lovelier place in the whole world? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had! Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life! December 12 The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment! My neighbor tells me not to worry- we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again I don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor. December 14 Snow, lovely snow! 8 inches last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish l wouldn't huff and puff so. December 15 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all. December 16 Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel. December 17 Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room. December 20 Electricity's back on, but had another 14 inches of the damn stuff last night. More shoveling! Took all day. The damn snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying. December 22 Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white shit fell today, and it's so cold, it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to piss. By the time I got undressed, pissed and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter, but he says he's too busy. I think the asshole is lying. December 23 Only 2 inches of snow today And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she, nuts?!! Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she's lying. December 24 6 inches - Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the son of a bitch who drives that snow plow, I'll drag him through the snow by his balls and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplow. December 25 Merry freaking Christmas! 20 more inches of the damn slop tonight -Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God, I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's an idiot. If I have to watch "It's A Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave. December 26 Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves. December 27 Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze; plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me $1,400 to replace all my pipes. December 28 Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. The BITCH is driving me crazy!!! December 29 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am? December 30 Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plow driver, and now he is suing me for a million dollars, not only the beating I gave him, but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his ass. The wife went home to her mother. Nine more inches predicted. December 31 I set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling. January 8 Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?

There is a new type of storm that has been occurring in the midwestern states call a deracho. It is like a inland hurricane. Where I live in Iowa it has occurred twice in that many years. We had up to 120 mph straight line winds that lasted up to thirty minutes and covered areas across multiple states. And now we are having blizzards with up to 60 mph winds and back to back storms with maybe a day between the and accumulated snow up to a foot and that on top of an eighth to a quarter inch of ice. Then daytime high temps in the negative Fahrenheit ranges with lows down to -20s and wind chills to around negative fifties below zero. With the winds in the forty mph ranges it blows the snow around forming drifts to a couple of meters deep or more. I live out in the country where we see the worst of it because we're out in the open, but we are always prepared for bad weather to make it up to a week or longer before we start to need anything. Just have to tough it out till it's time to readjust for the extreme heat and weather of the warmer seasons. The times of good weather and the activities and increased freedoms of the countryside more than make up for it all.

I was in Chicago when that snow storm hit, wasn't as bad as they predicted. The negative 20 degree days after the snow storm was rough. James and Millie you mentioned something about maybe seeing the northern states and I assume that would include the city of Chicago in the future, and you thought the summer would be great for that. Summers up here in Chicago are no joke, usually it is around 80 F which is fine. We do get multiple days in the summer when it is 90 F or over 100.

Hi guys! The problem with these cold fronts is, they don't stay up north! Plus, they travel so fast that the air doesn't have time to warm up much. Here in Fort Worth, Texas, 3 days ago, the temperature got down to -13C, with a 30 mile per hour wind. Luckily there wasn't much snow and it warmed up to about 5°C yesterday but another front came in last night and today it's about -3°C. Only about another 6 weeks before the worst is over.

They were saying we would have 6 to 10 inches of snow, but it only ended up with about 3-4 inches of wet snow that condensed and froze and it then got very cold. Down to about -10 below 0 F (-23 C) and has now warmed up to 19 (-7.2C). Had a bunch of wind too. When I looked on radar yesterday, it was still snowing on the towns next to Lake Michigan. They always get more snow when it it windy even when there is no storm. What is your normal temperature.

I understand his trip. In 1975 (springtime) after they took the plows off the trucks, we had a snow storm. A group of us were in Chicago for a college class, our school was in Naperville Illinois. The normal "short ride home" took us 8 hours. Sometimes we were parked on the expressway for 15 minutes just to move 3 car spaces and park again. We would get out of our car to push other cars forward and then push our car forward. When we got back I went to my car just in time to watch it get buried in snow by a front-end loader from a construction company that was "trying to help". I made it home the next day, after going into a ditch myself. It was a good time. Or maybe not. Everyone have a wonderful day 🙂

Living in MN it gets so cold that they do this one experiment every year to show you how cold it is: they leave a banana (unpeeled) outside overnight, they then in the morning (after having AIR temperatures of -45 F - that is 45 degrees BELOW zero) grab the now frozen solid banana and use it to hammer in a nail into a piece of wood. That's right. It gets so cold here in MN that you can turn a banana into a hammer.......

We have stayed cold all week and our one city snowplow hasn't been able to clear all the roads so we've spent a week at home. In fact today will be the first time in the week that we will be out. With more cold and freezing rain in the forcast we will be running out to get a few things for the extended bad weather. Next week we will be back to normal, the week after averaging 60+F so can't wait.

I was born on the great lakes of Erie and Ontario. The cosstsl storms (Chicago/Detroit/New York/Toronto, etc.) are horrible because they get Heavy, "lake effect" snowfalls plus the humidity (cold and wet is different from cold and dry) and terrific winds make for winters like the UK can't really grasp in scale. Toronto has skyways and tunnels all around down townso you can go to work,the mall, shopping and your hotel and never set foot on the street. Trains run all through town in underground tunnels and on the coast of Erie (about 50mi. west) they close down the first few streets during winter and the people have to move in to their winter lodgings. The record high marker for snow drifts, on the edge of the lake, nailed up on the telephone/power poles is,at about 25 feet off the ground. But, when i lived up on "The Great Divide" of the United States, in northwest Montana (Great falls, Mt. is actually the windiest city in America, in spite of Chicago's moniker) and the incredible snow/ice/wind storms that happen up there are true killers. 8 mos without a clear, sunny day, drifts tens of feet deep, roads obliterated and "cabin fever" when people become mentally affected from being cooped up in a home/cabin for weeks and months on end without having any real change of pace/scenery/temp and ability to move about becomes riddled with depression, violence and suicide. I lived up there in the 70s and 80s, before computers, the internet and social media so there were no immediate, emotional distractions, everyone just made their way (often by cross country skies or snowshoes) to the bars in town... If they lived closely enough. Pool,darts and drinking were the primary activities, all taken quite seriously. When i was in the Airforce base day room,trying to get up a game of pool withthe guys for a few bucks (in Utah, also on the Great divide) one of the guys walked in and said... "Don't play pool or darts with him, he's from Montana, that's all they do, all winter long." Needless to say, i wasn't happy. 😊 The roads up into the mountain passes are lined with dozens of stakes with crosses on top at every corner, each one marking a lost life at that turn. The corners got so full of crosses, the govt. decided "why add more, the point has been made" and the program stopped. Getting caught out in those Montana snow storms up in the top of the Rockies is certain death if you're not prepared and/or have immediate shelter and heat. It's the same in the mountains of Colorado and Utah, where i spent time in the military trying to work out in the worst possible conditions on flight lines set between two mountain tops. Countless expeditions, including the Donner party (Donner pass marks their meet with fate) were lost when being caught crossing/on top of the Rockies, both in historical and modern events. Driving a modern car over paved passes is still a suicide run at many times during the winter but... Those passes also provide some of the most beautiful country/scenery in the world, especially during summer. 😊

Just know that chicago doesnt get snow as much because they are on the west side of lake Michigan. My home town is on the east side of lake Michigan's coast....we get whats called "lake effect" snow. We get more snow because the jet stream comes from to back side of chicago and across lake michigan, grabbing all that moisture and making it into even MORE snow for the east side of the lake than the other side.
