When i was in highschool, if you had a beef with somebody, you met off of school grounds and proceeded to beat the crap out of eachother. When it was over we shook hands and went our separate ways. We didnt lose our minds and shoot up the whole school. I really dont recognise the world we live in anymore.

Heh This real jerk in high school started going out with my best friend and told me to stop hanging out with her. That's stupid so I ignored him. Next time I saw him he said to meet him after school to fight. Again I thought that was stupid so I didn't go. Nothing ever came of it. I don't even know if he showed up.

I was bullied in middle school. Eventually I had enough and fists flew. I told the principal that I'd had enough, and took care of it myself. He said "ok" and sent us back to class. If that had happened in today's world we both would have been kicked out of school. Glad I grew up when I did. Take care of business and no whining or crying about it. Was never bullied again and created a lot of confidence in my little 70# self!!!

It's sad when you drive by houses that you know have kids living in them but there is NO ONE playing outside. 😢we left in the morning to play with the neighbors until lunch time then right back out to play until supper. Then out again until dark. Of course this was more in the summer. But still found time after school too.

I totally agree with this. It gave us the opportunities to increase our awareness and knowledge of the world at large; as well as allowing us to learn from all over the world. Sadly it also allows a person to be a total jerk without really facing the consequences of their actions and behavior.

We had ONE black and white television with rabbit ears and a choice of only four channels. During windy or rainy weather we spent more time adjusting the rabbit ears trying to get a clear signal than we did watching the TV. Sometimes we had a phone, usually plugged in in the kitchen wall, but sometimes we didn't have a phone. We kids stood on kitchen chairs to reach the kitchen sink and wash dishes. I had books hidden all over the house just in case I got in trouble and my mom gave me a thirty minute timeout (the horror!) wherever I happened to be. We were sent outside to play(stay off the train tracks!) and we had to go home when the street lights came on. I was seven years old and my mom gave me a grocery list and some money and sent me off to the local market. 👒

The one thing that I have noticed about the modern generation is that they have trouble speaking in public to a crowd. My generation had a school course in public speaking. I remember my teacher told me to either lower your eyes towards the stage footlights or look to the back of the hall where you look for the tallest person and pretend that you are only speaking to that specific person.

I can definitely relate. When I talk about my adventures in the 90s, the younger generation seems to have very few adventures to speak of, comparatively. Whereas I woke up every day and had an adventure. I could write a book just about the girls I would meet sneaking out every night or going to their house when their parents were not there. I had more than a few encounters with pissed off dad's with firearms. The plus side to that was realizing that none of them were actually going to shoot me. They just wanted to scare me. That's good information for a guy to know.

As a kid who only had 7 tv channels no internet no vhs etc. It is a complicated thing. Social media is the real evil. Instant gratification and validation is a problem. Mass miscommunication. Oversharing and narcissism now.
@HermanVonPetri
@HermanVonPetri 2 месяца назад
Back then "social media" included newspaper letters to the editor pages, bulletin boards and pen-pals. Newspapers, libraries, schools and other communication groups sometimes offered to connect you to random people around the country or around the world so that you could write letters to each other and develop connections to people that you'd never have the chance to meet in normal life. Some people have developed lifelong friendships with these "pen pals." It was even a fad for a while to put a letter into a helium balloon and send it up into the sky, not knowing who would get the letter, and hope that whoever found it would write you back.

Constant communication is not always a better thing. Back in the 80s a Karen was just a woman's name. You saw your girlfriend for a few minutes at school or for a date on the weekend making the time you did have together feel much more special. Among other things that are different and not for the better. Kids eho went hunting could even have a rifle in their vehicle and the police would never be called, because it just never entered our minds to try and shoot up the school because someone got mad.

When I grew up in the 70s we didn't have much but nobody really needed much. On Sundays the only thing open was the gas stations. Playing outside with the neighborhood kids was great. We only had 3 TV channels, which all went off the air at midnight. Family's ate dinner together with out a phone or TV. People cared for their neighbors. We respected adults. We didn't lock the doors of our house when nobody was home. So wish it was still like that.

People have quickly devolved into a bunch of emotional crybabies, since social media came along. It’s so much easier to be a cyber bully, than it is a real life bully. It’s also much more accepting to be a habitual complainer nowadays. The extremes of aggression, or whining would have been called out to your face back in the day. People in general were more kind to one another, and you could actually sit and discuss opposing views, without losing your mind about it. Also, confirmation bias has became a huge problem. You can literally find endless “information” nowadays to support ANYTHING that you choose to believe. It’s kinda scary, to be honest.
@HRConsultant_Jeff
@HRConsultant_Jeff 2 месяца назад
I think the biggest change, besides no one really knowing each other like they used to, is that we no longer have a shared experience and existence. For instance, the shows on TV are so fragmented between 20 or so major outlets (netflix, appletv, amazon prime, etc) that nothing has a big audience. It is hard to discuss anything you are watching since most people around you probably did not watch it or are planning to stream it later. This is leading to a big decline in the human and national experience and the reason that most people feel they are not being heard (no one is being heard). It was easier to contact my local congressman or speak with them in the old days. Now you have to only send an email and it will be answered by AI or something.

I was born in '94 and a lot of this still applied to me as well, mainly in the early 2000's with things like cassette recorders, cameras that needed to be developed, and Blockbuster. People dont understand that the prices of things are never going back down. This inflation is deeper than we think. Those buying groceries are well aware that the real inflation is much over 10%. It just wasn't as primitive as they make it seem. Before Blockbuster we already had HBO and Showtime and that was back in the 70s. By the 80s we already had cell phones (mom had a car phone) PCs (yes, we had to call a number and put the receiver on the puter to connect) and I've been on a computer since the 80s. And we already had video games (Atari & Sega). But even with our toys we always socialized in person and it wouldn't occur to us to isolate ourselves. I feel sorry for people today.

There was no trimming with cassettes. You would simply rewind the tape to were the song you wanted ended then re-record over the portion accidently recorded after the song you wanted ended like the DJ talking. Music was definitely waaaay better and more creative. People could actually sing and play instruments irrespective of genre. Kids played sports outside everyday instead of inside on video games. It was awesome.

Maybe because I was a child of the 1950's and young adult in the 1960's but we spent our time outdoors. Growing up in Florida we had thousands of acres of unposted land to explore. My friends and I wandered the woodlands, fished, hunted, built tree houses, skinny-dipped in forest ponds. Color TV was only a thing the rich could afford and shopping malls were yet to be built. Having lived long enough to have experienced the great societal changes, I feel life back then was far better in every way and I feel pity that young folks today have missed out on a life that was rich in experience and adventure.

The malls were also sort of like a early internet, if you wanted to find out where a party was, you would go to the mall and just ask your friends who worked there. "We knew where all the fun parties were." It's good to see that the Brea Mall is still around and active, unlike the Puente Hills mall, "where my freinds and I used to hang around at", which is pretty much dead now. For a fairly accurate taste of that time period, you need to watch the movie "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".

Going to the video store and picking out a movie(VHS) to rent was the fun part. Now you just push play on your phone or tv. 😢

Love that you enjoy board games and sending Christmas cards. I started to send out Christmas and Birthday cards to my friends and it really does feel so good to hear back how they enjoyed getting them or receiving some from them in return. I'm 61 and have seen it go from everyone outdoors and basically 3 main channels and PBS to watch to full on living on the computer. I don't mind the Internet or everything that's come with it, but I will say I feel lucky to have been raised in the era of being made to get out, interact, use the imaginations and explore. The freedom of it all and even building a tree house on the side of a canyon away from prying eyes. Never hung out at malls as much as the roller rinks. Anyway, rambled on enough...love your channel and your reactions. Stay safe, keep up the great work and looking forward to all your upcoming posts.

When you go to New Braunfels, go check out the rivers. Guadalupe, Comal, Blanco, San Marcos. I hung out at the river any chance I could when I was growing up. So much fun & so many great memories- I'm glad the internet wasn't around back then.

Yep remember all of this, including using VHS tapes to record movies/tv shows off the tv when you couldn't buy it in store. I remember using Encarta all the time, it was a lifesaver when you had to do a report! I admit I'm glad we have the Internet but things like social media have gotten way out of hand

The advantage of asking someone out in the digital age is that unlike in person/ face to face interactions you aren’t pressured into answering right away or even at all if you don’t know how to respond. So for these types of situations, I personally think the digital age is better. Yes, in person interactions are the best but sadly many people aren’t good with social interactions and taking those interactions digital is better for them.

That is probably the silliest thumbnail quote I ever saw. I mean, my nieces and nephews STILL play outside. Then again, the teens and older do have to be encouraged to leave the house, so... :P (And I still go to the mall, but there are really only three malls within an hour of me, not counting what I call 'ghost malls'. Back in 1996 at the end of my teenaged years I remember there were two proper malls within... 'healthy walking distance' in Nassau County, Long Island, The Source and Roosevelt Field. The former one is basically a dead mall walking; luckily for the latter one, it's still one of the largest malls in America so it's got history behind it. It does NOT have a bookstore anymore though and that irks me.)

Before the internet, there were Electronic Bulletin Boards, BBSs, where you would call another computer over the telephone lines. These had software to download as well as forums to post and reply to messages. Life was better before the internet. Kids spent their time outdoors playing or just sitting around talking. Now, all anyone seems to be doing is staring at their cell phones. One would think there's got to be more to life than that, but it doesn't seem so.

I'm 65 and my brother 61. I think it was better then but he disagrees, pointing out how much better TV are now and cheaper lol when I was in Highschool we had a man come to our school assembly and showed us a machine that would soon allow us to purchase movies (no thought of rental yet) and watch it at home on our huge wooden TV that picked up 3 channels lol but we did explore outside and were physically fit. I guess it's a mixed bag but I think it was better then.

I was born in 1969, we did not socialize at the mall, we shopped and then went home. Malls were great, but we didn't hang out and talk with strangers. Granted, if you and some friends decided to go to the mall together, I guess it could be considered socializing, but you usually just hung out in the neighborhood.

Before the Internet (and probably more accurate, social media) people relied on other people for their source of entertainment. Now it seems people get in the way of our entertainment. There are a few viral RU-vid videos of "home videos" before the Internet. The difference in social interaction is wild. There's one of a "gas station in Orlando Florida" and then another one where a couple of boys go to a local record store. The Internet is great in many ways, but in some ways it has disconnected us and affected our sense of community.

I'm so thankful I grew up learning how to read a paper map and use a compass. I don't like GPS. It has dumbed us all down. I know people that will travel 50 miles away, within our state, and yet, when they park, they have no idea which direction home is . They have no idea exactly where they are in the state. I find that maddening. I'm teaching my Grandkids how to read a map, and also have wooden puzzles of the USA, point out our state and name the other states. My son gave my granddaughter a giant map of the world to hang on her bedroom wall. And I gave her a globe. By the age of 4 we were teaching her with the wooden puzzle. What if we lose all our towers and our grid goes down? Gps will be useless on our phones. We may only have satellite usage, which require a SAT phone.

I'm 74 and have lived through many generations. Simpler times back then but it had its good and bad all a matter of perspective I guess. Now I wonder how the generations in 30, 40, 50 years from now will look at their way of living, if better or gotten worse. Don't think I'll be around to find out.
