In hockey, the goalie is the most important player. You can have the greatest goal scorer, but without a good goalie behind him, you're going nowhere. I'm looking at you, Edmonton Oilers.
Check out Dominek Hasek if you want to see one of the best goaltenders ever. The guy had a slinky for a spine and did things no other goalies could do. He was in this video 3 or 4 times but he seemingly had a few unbelievable saves every game. He once had a shutout in a game that went into multiple overtime periods and he stopped all 70+ shots on goal.
Growing up my brother was a great goalie and played just like Hasek. Then one season he helped coach my team and told my coach he'd help with our goalies and my coach said "stay the hell away from my goalies, what you do is not normal" lol
To answer your question after the first clip (2:16), anyone can use their hand to bat the puck down (or catch and immediately the drop the puck at their feet). They can’t throw the puck to a teammate, though, or this is a hand pass. The goalie is the only one who can legally hold onto or cover the puck with his hands. However, it must be part of making a save. The goalie can’t just grab the puck off the ice. The goalie is also allowed to leave the crease but technically can’t leave his own half of the ice (the red line)
Add to that: The reason for the blue paint isn't to restrict the zone of play of the goaltender -- but rather to restrict the zone of play of the opposing skaters. Opponents may not enter the portion of the goal crease designated by blue prior to the puck. (Unless pushed in by a defender)
@@iangurudata I would amend this to say that players may enter the crease (blue ice), but if they make contact with the goalie trying to make a save while in the blue, it's illegal.
The glove saves at the goal line are my favorite because the goalie not only has to catch or deflect the puck, they have to make sure their glove doesn't go across the line!!! Amazing saves.
Daz, I love you. Finally some proper hockey reactions. Goalies are always the last ones thought of even though they carry the team. Floridas goalie saved them time and time again until he couldn't anymore. Then he gets blamed. Its a tought position being a goalie.
3:07 the team was in the process of pulling the goaltender to allow extra attacker on the ice to try to even up the score at the end of the game The guy miraculously made it back to the net before going off the ice to make the save. Hearing Gary Thorn (NHL Announcer) yelling "Save by Hasek!!" At the top of his lungs is one of my favorite nostalgic memories. For clarity: Dominik Hasek is the goalie you saw at the very end flipping the player over to end the video - as well as several other plays previously in the video... great video!!
-As a hockey goalie, can confirm, we're a special breed. You can find mountains of evidence and forum threads about the goofy things people see us do. And I enjoy doing it whenever I can :) lol - It's an incredible feeling when you see them look back at you, and you see that trust in their eyes. To be able to tell them, "None of them go in tonight, go score." and you back it up with a huge save? The team is gonna roar, they're gonna clap their sticks on the boards, they're gonna roar my name. The barn will chant my name, and both teams will know, you're here to ruin them. After watching a video like this, its a hype train for us. Having watched it, you know that you CAN make every save, so you WILL make every save. Even if you're scored on, it wasn't because you "couldn't", you can't ever tell yourself that. You vow to make the next one, there is no defeat. -Lots of focus, lots of fun. As a Canadian it's great to see our game we love so much get so much exposure, it truly is the best sport in the World... Just an FYi, they are called Goaltenders, netminders or tendy's...
That first clip, the goalie was on his way to the bench so another skater could go on the ice. It's often a tactic used when a team is losing by only one (sometimes two) goals, and there's only a minute left in the game. Might as well take the goalie off and put someone out there who might score and tie the game. In this case, the other team got the puck back before the goalie got to the bench, so he skated back and made the amazing save.
Hockey is probably one of the few pro sports out there, that you can actually watch the game and hear the players swear being picked up by the mic on the ice. Everyone loves it.
I love that the Refs will give it back to em too if a player is getting too lippy lol. Refs aren't afraid to trash talk either! What a ridiculous sport, I absolutely love it.
@@djjazzyjeff1232 In basketball if you are rude to the ref , you get thrown out, and in baseball if you even say something to the ref he doesnt like, you get thrown out. In hockey, you can get thrown out, but there is lea way that you can mouth off to the ref, but the ref will mouth off to you as well, which I think is great.
@@melanisticmandalorian8909 It's great. All that "zero tolerence" stuff is just BS imo. In sports as well as just society in general. Honestly I think it stems from fighting being part of it. The guys KNOW that if they get too far out of line there's a nose-crookeding in their future so they don't act a fool. It squashes all that before it has a chance to fester into some deep seated resentment or hatred for another player because there's no recourse. People blindly think "fighting=bad" and in society it's like even ARGUING=Bad, but that's how you end up with school shooters.
To address your question at the start, the goalie has no restrictions on where he can roam, but only receives goalie protections in the "trapezoid" formed by the red lines behind the goal. In the first clip the goalie was trying to skate to the bench to get traded off for an extra attacker. You are allowed 6 skaters on the ice at a time(5+ goalie). You are allowed to remove your goalie at any time and replace him for a 6th offensive player. Teams only do this at the end of a game when they are trailing and desperately need a goal to come back and tie. And yes all players can use their hands. Non goalies cannot close their fist around the puck or pass it to another player with their hands. They must immediately put the puck down to play with a stick.
The "trapezoid" or Brodeur Lines, behind the net are where the goalie is allowed to play the puck. Out side that and they get a penalty. The "crease" in front of the net is where goalies get "protections".
I gotta say as a Canadian who grew up at the rink, nothing makes me happier to see people from other countries really appreciate the game, particularly if they're an avid fan of other sports. Like, you're comment at the end, suggesting that if we had to choose to keep one sport alive, you would choose hockey... I assume you're probably just as passionate about soccer as I am hockey. if it wasn't so expensive to play, I truly believe it would compete with soccer as the world's most popular sport. Side note, the most special part of the sport, is the brotherhood in that dressing room. Everyone understands that the man sitting next to him would die for their teammates and for a very select few, have their names engraved on the Stanley Cup. Which by the way I believe is the most difficult championship to win in all of sports.
I did goalie in both hockey and football for a long time. Football in a way is harder if you ONLY consider the size of the net but i feel like in this sport it's more important to stop shots from happening in the first place. You have a large surface of play, it's slower, there's less scoring chances. Not necessarily a bad thing but it's more chess like. Yeah in some occasions you have to show up and save the day but playing with half decent teams i had a lot of moment of boredom sitting in my net watching the play from afar. It's a lot more intense and involved in hockey. The play keep going back and forth at high speed on a small rink and there's a lot more scoring chances. Puck can go up to 170kmh and people are flying around you. These scoring chances never really stop from happening. In hockey you have to make 30++ saves per game almost guaranteed. I can promise if you try it you will feel like the net is big enough as it is. They have a similar level of difficulty but for different reasons. Hockey is more fun though. I like football(one of my favorite sports) but as a goalie i personally prefer the pressure and the massive impact i can have on the final result being the most important part of the play all the time.
As a formal university goalie I can tell you all the pressure of the team is on your back. Hardest position to play one day your the goat next your the scapegoat.
Big hockey and football fan here from Ottawa, Canada. They are most commonly called goalies in hockey instead of keepers and I don’t believe there are any under 6ft anymore unless Bernier is still floating around somewhere and 6ft is considered on the smaller side. In theory similar to football you want a bigger goalie to take up more of the net (goal) because the players are so good they can expose any gap they see between them and the back of the net. The players can knock the puck down with their hand but aren’t allowed to hand pass it to another team mate. All this to say love the content and keep it up! It’s nice to see people across the pond interested in hockey just like there’s a pretty massive football following where I’m from especially amongst my friends
Watched that slide by Hasek into the Minnesota player live and couldn't stop laughing (it was a tripping penalty). Hasek(who was in this a bunch) was a bit of a wildcard who was known for doing that on occasion. He was a bit crazy off the ice as well, but my favorite goalie of all time.
2:32 - goalies can't play the puck while beyond the center line or in the corners (behind the goal line and outside of the trapezoid-shaped area behind the net), but anywhere they can legally play the puck, they can use their glove. (The restriction on the corners is a relatively new rule, about 20 years or so; before then, the goalies could play the puck anywhere behind the goal line.) They can get called for delay of game if they cover up or hold the puck without reason, though. Other players can also knock the puck down with their hand while it's in the air, but must immediately drop it and, if outside the defensive zone, it cannot be first touched by a teammate (either the opponent or the player who knocked it down must touch it first).
Goalies today are more sane and steady than they used to be, but from the early 00s and earlier, there were some truly bananas goalies in net. Genuinely unhinged, they'd fight anyone. I think one of the more colorful veteran goalies playing today is Marc-Andre Fleury. He's not insane, he's just a giant goofball and prankster. Legendary around the league for his pranks.
Watching your vid and thought I would breakdown the rules you had questions to: 1 - The goalie can leave his net but cannot go recover a puck in the two corners behind his net nor can he pass the center line unless they are heading to the bench for an extra player 2 - A player can catch a mid air puck and put it back on the ground immediately. They can also smack the puck with their hand and do a "hand-pass" to another player on their team but only in their own defensive zone. Otherwise, if they are on the offense, the play will be stopped and a new faceoff will occur 3 - Yes, the goaltender can slide out of their net, curl up in the fetal position and make the guy do a front flip and eat ice.
I played with a "Tendie" for 6 years. Nobody was permitted to speak to him for 3 hours before the game.. He had enough conversation with himself aloud for 3 people. 😅
FYI. The goalkeeper cannot handle the puck beyond the centre red line as that becomes a penalty. He can venture beyond the centre line if he goes directly to the bench for a skater. If he covers a puck outside the crease he can be called for delay of game. However, if outside the crease to cut the angle he can hold a caught puck for a faceoff without penalty. As a goalkeeper myself I learned ALL the above the hard way.

As a hockey goalie, I can tell you there is no greater feeling than when an opponent is absolutely certain they've scored, only for you to snag/bat/kick..do anything to prevent that puck from going in the net!! I've had it happen numerous times, and it's a total rush!! But (and it's a big but) - any goalie that says it's complete skill is full of B.S! You need some luck on your side too - sure you have to make the attempt on the impossible to begin with, but timing is everything - you're literally a split second away from a goal being scored - so what you saw in this video was more often than not complete and utter desperation moves on the goalie's part! They look great when they work, but believe me, there's many attempts that fail. Hockey goalies have much more action than most goaltenders in other sports (especially football/soccer - I should know - I was a soccer goalie for 12 years as a kid - but let me tell you - covering that size of net made me able to do many cross crease dives in hockey!! So it's a transferrable skill!!) Because of the speed of the game, that it's contained by boards, and the size of the ice rink - goalies always have to be prepared! Great reaction gents. I'm with you - if there's one sport to remain - hockey is it! (but I'm a Canadian so I'm definitely biased!)

I am quite an NHL fan, played goalie for a few years. I'm due in England the week of 17th of July, if you'd like to do a live call/stream, let me know and I'll be happy to give you guys the differences of how the rules work: (In summary: think of hockey as the ANTI-football: a "kicking motion" into the net/goal is disallowed - offensive players cannot "kick" the puck in. HOWEVER, ANYBODY on the defensive side can use their "whatever" to keep the puck out...BUT a NON GOALIE may NOT close his hand on a puck for "stopping the clock, or throwing purposes": you'll see this called in the blue paint of a goalie called sometimes - which then a penalty shot is awarded) I'd be happy to exchange notes, as I no doubt don't have all the rules of football proper. (The offsides confuses me ;D) Great stuff gents...
2:18 no there is no rule for going anywhere for goalie. The only rule is if the goalie has the puck in the trapezoid or goes past the red line. He saved it because he ran back to make the save. They do empty net so the can get an extra defender. That way they can get control and score to tie or tiebreak the game
They're called goalies, net minders, goalkeeper or goaltenders. An old term was goalers. They're allowed to catch and hold the puck anywhere but if they catch it and the ref deems they could let it go and play it with no opponent anywhere near, they could get a delay of game penalty.
As to your comment at 10:42 I can tell you that a goalie is a goalie. The goaltender on a hockey team is usually the one who is just a little bit "off." Hockey players are a little strange in general, but we're always the weird one on the team. I can't really tell you why that is, but it's an immutable law of nature...consistent as gravity.
You can use your hand to bat a puck out of the air as long as it doesn’t go to a teammate. You can pass it to yourself (or turn it over), but batting the puck to a teammate would result in a hand pass
When u see the older clips those goalies are using 40 pound deer hide pads and still jumping around like present day goalies whos pads weigh around 5 to 10 pounds
ok boys so goalies have no restrictions on using their hands on the puck. Players can even have the puck in their hind in play as long as they dont: use their hand to put the puck in the net or us their hand to direct the puck to the stick of another player. Youre watching older footage, goalies in the modern era have a zone behind the net called the trapezoid. behind them they may handle the puck in the trapezoid and not outside of it. In front of the goal line they may leave the net and handle the puck anywhere up to center line.
The goalie is restricted as to where he can play the puck: he cannot play it beyond the center red line and he cannot play it behind the goal-line except (at least in modern times) in the trapezoid directly behind the goal.
Ken Dryden’s save on Jim Pappin in Game 7 of the 1971 Cup Finals is as impressive as any of these but I don’t know if the person who compiled this is aware of it or even has a clip.

Position is called “Goalie”, they are certified bonkers. Blue paint is called the “Goalie Crease”. Players can’t interfere with the goalie when he is in the crease. Goalies have different privileges than the other players and can smother the puck anywhere they allowed to touch it. Other players can touch the puck with their hands but can’t pass or score with their hands. That save near the beginning was a goalie racing back to save the puck when he was trying to get off the ice so a 6th offender could join the attack. Goalies can hit other players but generally don’t because it is an unwritten rule not to hit goalies as once they’re out of the crease, they are fair game. The last save looked like a tripping penalty as the officials arm went up immediately. As always, I must point out that Hockey is played on ice so the term “Ice Hockey” is redundant. Hope this clarified a few things. Go Sens!
I don't recall any super weird goalies in hockey. They all seemed level-headed to me. Only one I can think of is Patrick Roy. MLB Pitchers on the other hand can be big time weirdos and intense people.
Any player can use a hand on the puck almost anywhere. However, a non-goalie (skater) cannot close their hand on the puck to gain a terrotorial advantage, they can only bat it down or momentarily catch it and place it directly down at their stick/skates. If they bat it down in their own defensive end (marked by the thick blue lines that are approximately 1/3rd of the way up the ice), then the puck is a live puck. If they bat it down in the neutral zone (the area between the 2 thick blue lines) or the attacking zone, then ONLY the player who touched it can play it, (or a defensive player on the opposite team). If this scenario happens (hand pass), the whistle is blown, no penalty is assessed but a face off occurs at. Spot determined by the referee so as to not give the offending team an advantage. If the puck gets stuck in the glove momentarily, the player can continue trying to place it on the ice. If majorly stuck, a whistle will blow stopping play, if the ref determines the skater is “holding” the puck and it’s not an accident, a penalty can be called “closing the hand on the puck” is the penalty. A goal cannot be scored as the result of a directed movement of the hand, the puck MAY deflect off a hand and not be considered a directed movement (hand pass). A penalty is called if a skater falls on and covers the puck deliberately (in the referee’s discretion) or gathers the puck under their body while already down. If this action occurs inside the goal crease (that’s the blue box in front of the goal), a penalty shot is awarded. If this occurs inside the goal crease AND the goaltender has been substituted out for an extra skater, the referee can award a goal. A goaltender MAY cover or catch the puck outside of the Goal Crease, but ONLY if doing so is part of an active attempt to stop a shot on goal. To simply cover a loose puck, the goaltender must be in the goal crease. Further, if a goaltender gets the puck, and no attacking player is pressuring him, the goaltender must return the puck to play, or he can be assessed a delay of game (often a ref will communicate to “keep it moving” if the situation would warrant a delay of game call. One last piece: in the corners of each end, behind the goal line, you may notice some angled lines, essentially marking off the corners of the ice. In between these 2 angled lines, including the area behind the goal, is called the “trapezoid”, it’s a protected area for goaltenders. Since goaltenders are NOT allowed to be checked (hit intentionally for the purpose of knocking down/removing from the play), goaltenders are allowed to safely play the puck with their stick, in this trapezoid region, or anywhere in front of the goal line (up to the center ice line), however, in the “corners”, the goaltender is NOT allowed to play the puck at all, doing so is an automatic penalty, no discretion allowed. This is a fairly recent change to the rules because several goalies in the 90’s would take advantage of the “no hitting” rule to skate back there with the puck and act as an unhittable extra skater.
Hey guys! I am a goalie (goalkeeper, goaltender, netminder - all acceptable terminology) here in the states (Michigan) and I have to say that you aren't wrong about goalies being "bonkers." The puck can go in excess of 160 kilometers per hour (100 MPH) and we willingly, knowing this, do the job - and LIKE it. I'm new to your channel just now, but am sure that it won't be my last visit! We call them Goal Tenders or Goalies. They tend to be a bit odd, you have to be if you like having hard rubber disks shot at you at up to 160km per hour.
Hockey goalies are pure mental. You have to realize that these guys are taking an 160 km puck sometimes to the body. Also that move that hasek did, 100 percent legal. Same as futbol, he made contact with the puck first and the body was hit after making him live. No puck= penalty
Goal tendies can hold pucks players can do it also but only can drop it for themselves. They can’t pass it with their hand because they’ll get called for a penalty called (hand pass). Man I love hockey.
The least interesting thing about hockey are the big hits and fights--the most interesting is the skill level--skating, hand-eye coordination, hands--passing, juking, shooting the puck.
If there's a minute left and a team is down by one or more goals, they'll pull the goalie for an extra forward to increase they're chance of scoring a goal(s) but they're net will be open without a goalie. That's what happened on the first one,he had to hurry back to stop it because they caught him half way between the goal to the bench before a forward could replace him.
