As you can tell from this video this was one of those days where I had stress seeping out of my face. BUT! I'm happy you guys get to meet my dog Mutley. Also please excuse the mess of a room - I've been refurbishing slowly over a few months and I've got piles of stuff around :D

"Nose on the grindstone" means to stay focused on your work. It is a reference to old school flour milling. The grindstone literally ground the flour, and if you were going too fast the flour could literally catch fire. So you had to keep your nose close to the grindstone to make sure you couldn't smell smoke or it catching fire. So if you weren't paying attention or "keeping your nose to the grindstone" there could be disaster.

I think it has more to do about craftsman whose job is to continuously stay hunched over with their face close the grindstone, making tools and other machined pieces, and the work ethic you need to be good at your craft.

He’s from eastern Kentucky in a very poor and limited opportunity part of the US. The opioid crisis is especially prevalent in that part of the country. His delivery is so perfect for the desperation many in Appalachia feel.

@@viciousvibes7829 They might not be from eastern Kentucky, but I am. And what they said is very fucking true. It's a breathtakingly beautiful state but filled with poor education, limited job opportunities, polluted water, and a lot of desperate and hopeless people turning to crime and drugs. My parents worked themselves to the bone to keep food on the table for us and we still barely made ends meet. It's even worse, now, since our major employers were the tobacco and coal industries which have been gutted in the last decade. Two of the biggest killers here are cancer and drugs. The cancer usually is a result of smoking, polluted water, and/or unsafe working conditions since Kentucky work laws favor the companies' rights over worker rights. Any time we try to get unions in to give us a better chance the company either pulls out entirely or threatens to. This song captures really well the desperate, hopeless grind that is life here.

Tyler Childers is from kentucky, which is in Appalachia. They’re facing a huge opioid addiction chrisis. So when his father is saying that to him in the song it’s deeper than just “don’t do drugs”.

Lol I live in kentucky and his words about the coal mines in like co. Is absolutely true it's hard brutal work and a lot have turned to pills to get through the pain. It's a deep meaningful song to people in and around ky

I was born and raised in the coal fields of Eastern Kentucky. There are plenty of references to that life. I've had family members die in the mines. Its truly a way of life.

Tyler is such an awesome person too. I grew up in that area of Eastern Kentucky. When it flooded a few months ago, Tyler was right there in Jenkins, with his mud boots on, helping people clean out their houses.

Nose on the grindstone is a reference to keeping your focus on moving forward whether it is work, a good relationship, or just life in general. The word play here is awesome. He’s telling people to stay focused and stay away from drugs and other frivolous things that will keep you from reaching your goals.

For about two years, my wife worked for a doctor that went to highschool with both Tyler Childers and Chris Stapleton near Lexington at the same time. The idea that two of the best country/bluegrass musicians of a generation came from the same place at the same time is bananas. And on top of that, according to the same guy, Stapleton wore a flat top haircut through highschool because he was fully committed to joining the military before being convinced to pursue music.

It's a very powerful song it's expressing the fact that a father's telling his son to do the right thing stay away from drugs be a good person and that the sun actually takes heed of the message feels the weight of it and delivers it to himself through adulthood and follow through with it which is so unheard-of nowadays nowadays kids want to make their own mistakes and not learn from others. there's an old saying, a smart man learns from his own mistakes and a wise man learns from someone else's mistakes. he's passing on the wise man adage.

In the US, at least the South, keep your nose on the grindstone means staying focused on what's important (work for sure, wife/family/goals, etc). Think "keep your eye on the prize" or similar. "Out of the pills" is a reference to the serious drug issue(s) in Kentucky, where Tyler is from (and where I Iive now, although I'm originally from Louisiana). So sounds like a very personal song from Tyler which is what I usually feel like I've gotten from him...and that's why I'm a fan frankly. :) Thanks for the reaction, liked it!

Grindstones can refer to either the spinning sharpening stones that have been used to sharpen tools or the mill stones for grinding flour. The chorus phrase he uses has turned into focusing on your work and working hard on good work ... focus on doing something productive and stay out of trouble. Staying out of the pills can literally mean to stay out of the drugs, because, in small working towns with few opportunities, it can be easy to stray off a productive path and chasing easy entertainment like drugs and parties to distract yourself from the depression that can be ever present. I've never been as tuned into lyrics as I have been since I've been on country kick with a few artists lately as well. Good video. Thanks, Yaz.

Nose on the grindstone means stay focused on your work, your goals. “Out of the pills” refers to the horrific prescription drug epidemic that afflicts so much of Appalachia (meaning the area of the US along the Appalachian Mountains, aka these hills). They work hard jobs, they get hurt, and they end up addicted. His dad is telling him to stay focused, stay away from drugs.

Would love to see you check out 'Not Ready to Make Nice' by The Chicks (formerly The Dixie Chicks). The lead singer spoke out against the president for the war in Iraq and the country music community really turned on the band. They were canceled way back before cancel culture was everywhere. Nose on the Grindstone is an idiom for keeping focused on the task at hand. His father is telling him to keep his focus on getting out of the place he was raised. On the "stay out of the pills" part, the opiate epidemic in America started in rural America, much like the crack epidemic affected mostly urban areas. The first line is "Daddy worked like a mule mining Pike county coal". Pike county is an area in Kentucky where one of the largest American coal mine is located. Miners were a huge part of the proliferation of the opiate epidemic because of the hard nature of their work. The companies that created drugs like oxycodon and vicodin heavily lobbied in those areas to get doctors to pump miners full of as many painkillers as they could handle to keep them working in the mines until they were completely broken. The song is about his father's desire for his son to escape his fate and the son's struggles that he has following his father's advice.

There's two kinds of Country these days...the version that plays over the air waves is more watered down commercial pop country style of "Country"...then there's what you've listened to so far. That get almost no radio time at all, but is more rooted it the traditional style of Country, storytelling of both good and dark subjects in life. Whiskey Myers, Sturgill Simpson, Colter Wall, Jamey Johnson, Cody Jinks, Whitey Morgan and the 78s, Chris Stapleton, and many more...all are represent this style (though Stapleton is the one that gets the most radio play).

Jerry played Snowman on Smokey and the Bandit (70's documentary on the American South LOL). Certified "Master of Guitar" by Chet Atkins, known for his playing technique called "the Claw" and his timeless sense of humor. Yes nose on the grindstone is a work hard reference. A grindstone is used by blacksmiths and many others to grind and sharpen tools. It can be a slow, patience trying, process to get shape and edge without overheating or damaging the blade. So stay sharp, stay on point, and keep working at it.

You may want to check out “Vergie” by Tyler Childers and “13 silver dollars” by Colter Wall to get something a little different but still wholly theirs. The brewery sessions was early for Colter and he has grown into his voice more on his newer stuff but 13 silver dollars is still my favorite of his.

Nose to/on the grindstone. Means like keep your eye on the prize. Don’t get distracted focus on what’s in front of you. Like a knife sharpener focus’s with his head down near the grindstone, if he doesn’t he’ll get cut.

So I'm from a similar region as Tyler . I can speak from experience his voice is very atypical is modern country music. That kind of sharp almost raspy tone is really only found in the Appalachian mountains in the U.S. Also new to the channel I like what I've seen so far keep it up.

Did anyone else get super strong MTV Unplugged Nirvana vibes from that? His singing style, the timbre of his voice and the acoustic guitar just took me straight back to that performance. Not trying to take anything away from him though. I personally am not a fan of “Country” music but I really did enjoy that song.

Grindstone is an implement found on most farms . The term was coined when it was a hand or man powered pedaled operation. Nose to the grindstone refers to pay attention to what you are doing. another way to say it is to keep your eye on the ball. Using a grindstone you have to watch many things at the same time. Speed of the stone, angle of the piece being sharpened, the force being applied to the work, how much heat is being imparted to the metal , if the watering can is still working .... you have to pay attention to what you are doing.

The Miller's that ground grain has to keep enough friction on the mill to grind the grain but not too much that would cause excess heat that would scorch the grain. They would keep their nose close to the brimstone at all times to make sure the grain was not burning..this was a constant effort while running the mill and the reason for the comparison. This is a common American saying.

I’m from central Kentucky just next to where he’s from in the mountains(hills). Nose on the grind stone means stay focused and work hard. There’s a really bad drug and poverty problem from his neck of the woods so drug abuse/the pain it brings and the likes really resonates deep with him more than most other places.

In Appalachia miners were constantly getting hurt and then being prescribed pain pills which they would eventually be cut off of but it was usually too late they were already addicted. It’s a vicious cycle

As others have said, "nose on - or to - the grindstone means to focus on your work. The pills refers to the epidemic of Oxycontin abuse that swept through Appalachia in the 90s. Oxy was given the nickname "hillbilly heroin" due to the widespread abuse in the Appalachian region. It makes sense that you wouldn't feel connected to the song. Tyler Childers is pure Appalachia and his songs reflect the poverty and misery of the region.
