There's a very easy way to dry hop without removing your lid on your fermenter. Buy the smaller version to the hop basket your using. When you first add your wort to the fermenter. Put the hops you are using in the hop basket and place it against the inside of the lid. Then place a magnet on the outside of the lid to hold the hop basket in place. Once you are ready to dry hop. Just pull the magnet off the lid and your basket will fall right in.

Cute tasting session! I have a tip for you: Instead of placing the hop sleeve inside the fermenter, place it in the keg. That way, you can purge the keg, transfer in an oxygen-reduced way, and then transfer from the keg into a clean keg for serving and longer shelf stability.

Truly like you work! I might be wrong, but it should be possible to get the aroma of the hops, without their bitterness, by infusing them at a lower temp just before cooling and adding yeast. Since you use an electronic controlled system, it should be even easier! This way you'd eliminate the oxygen variable, you might want to check this with clawhammer supllies

British spring barley Pale Ale malt is better for this style. More strawy, grainy, fine, light and sweetish(in taste, not the beer) with a touch of British Cara malt, so 5 to 10% accentuate the taste of it. Goldings is good, but some newer varieties could be better, like Pioneer, Boudicea, WGV, First Gold or Admiral, maybe in combination with Goldings.

I really don't think popping the lid to dry hop in your SS bucket will introduce much of any O2. There will be a substantial CO2 layer in the deadspace that will prevent oxidation. I've popped my buckets open post fermentation for all sorts of reasons; to put things in, take things out, or just take readings. I've even stirred a few times for specific reasons with post-fermentation additions. I've not once had an oxidation issue. As long as you are smart in your approach, there's little chance in this off flavor occurring. If you are still worrisome of oxidation potential, you could always take a keg disconnect off your CO2 hose and put a fresh layer on top before closing the lid. That will push out any potential O2.
@bentosan
@bentosan 4 года назад
This whole layer of protective layer of CO2 is homebrew logic mythology, gases don’t act like this and readily mix with one another quite rapidly. The more steps you take to avoid oxidation the better.

I've never had this style, but it looks fantastic! Sort of like a mix between a bitter and IPA. A question about yeast selection: I've noticed you've used London Ale III for all of your British beers thus far (instead of London ESB for your bitters), but is there ever the feeling that the yeast character, which I know is very "English" in a lot of ways, makes the beers all taste a bit too similar to one another? I know that all the styles are somewhat similar in their origin/execution, but do you feel like there is enough variation between the classic English strains to warrant using different ones, or is there enough character difference in the grist/hops that it isn't an issue? Great content as always!
@TheHomebrewChallenge
@TheHomebrewChallenge 4 года назад
So far there has been a pretty big difference in taste - even in those bitters where I was only changing one ingredient. I do start experimenting with different yeasts in the upcoming beers.

@1Venger
@1Venger 4 года назад
I keg hop all the time for the IPA recipes, don't worry about the hops in the keg. Leave them in there and don't worry about it, I guess it's the lower serving temperature at around 3c or 37.4f so they don't produce any grassy or herbal notes. Make life easy and drink wonderful hoppy beer until you kick the keg. Wow I'm gonna try this British Golden Ale as I'm a Brit too. Long live British Ales and the home of the IPA. One tip which I found important, try to use leaf hops if you can or try to sandwich pellet hops in between some leaf hops as this stops some hop particles from passing through that fine mesh. Also use glass marbles to weigh that keg hopper down if you use loads of hops too. Make sure it's maximum half full as the hops expand a lot as well. (had this keg hopper open once and blocked the beer out tube, totally nightmare which cost 3/4 of a keg.....arrrgggghhhh!) Love the show.

I also dropped the hops before final gravity was obtained. How to you reconcile leaving enough time to let the beer finish (absorb byproducts and all) and not leaving the hops for too long? Oxygenating beer later on in the fermentation can add off flavours and oxygen is not sanitary like the c02. This is why alot of people dry hop earlier on when fermenration is high so that the oxygen is quickly pushed back out by the c02 from the fermentation. I found it off that he adds his dry hops later on.

hops are over rated, I have had beers from people who put in hops at 60 min, 30 min, 15 min, 5 min, and at flame out then dry hop in the fermenter and all you can taste is hops, you might as well be putting cascade hops in a cup and adding water and drinking that, it is unbalanced and putrid, I don't mind commercial beers like Sierra Nevada Pale ale where there is hop flavor but I want to be able to taste the beer as well, a pale ale for me is hops at 60 mins and hops at 15 mins and that is it
