Was at a music industry convention thingy in the early 90's. Friend I was with kept pestering me to see Vince (I am not a country fan). I finally gave in. There were only 20 or 30 people in the room but he played like it was stadium. Absolutely perfect technique and amazing speed. Played a lot of rock standards and lead too. One of the best players I have ever seen live..and I have seen: Clapton, Page, Gilmore, Beck, Gibbons et al.. Still not a country fan but respect where it is due - for all of these guys. *Also, Earl did some great work on the Beverly Hillbillies and the Andy Grifith show you might want to check out.Great stuff as usual Fil. Rock!

Given the TINY total population of Britain compared to the United States, the British gave/gives us an incredible amount of guitar genius. Having said that, thanks Fil, for repeatedly recognizing the great American country string players, who on most occasions exceed the talents of many of the "rock" Gods. He wasn't in this one, but your appreciation of Glen Campbell showed me you know the REAL talent. Love your analysis and your own talents.

@@sealisa1398 Perhaps a better word may be unmentioned among his peers at of the same time? My only point is his name does not come up as often and Joe Cocker, Harry Nilson, etc. No knock at all on Leon...I always was a fan, but he just didn't get the "press" as much as some others. He played with a lot of groups and on his own and was much in demand for groups like this one.

Thanks Fil for your analyses of all different types of music, as it helps to appreciate the talent of all these individuals and bands even more., especially explaining the difficulty degree to people who can't play an instrument. I'd like to see you talk about the one of the most popular groups nobody has heard of. The Buckinghams, who had a big 1967, with a smooth lead singer in Dennis Tufano, and that Brassy Chicago sound, with some Blue Eyed soul mixed in.

Bluegrass guys can definitely tear it up. I remember an episode of The Andy Griffith Show where they had Earl Scruggs as a guest musician where he proceeded to rip some stuff on a banjo and then hit some harmonics and then - bend the neck. Later on it was considered 'modern' when Randy Rhoads (RIP) and others used to do it on Les Paul's with stacks and this was back in the Fifties. You got a great channel.

(played for 37 years..)... after I suffered paralysis from c5 c6 c7 (from the neck down) I had an op to stop it going completely ... so I can walk... but have lost a lot of feelings.... especially in my fingers.... But I'm forcing myself to play differently.... and I've got to an exceptable level...and can enjoy it again.... You helped me to appreciate the guitar again with your enthusiasm and interest.... May you carry on what you are doing! All the best!.....

When I was a young man gigging around the Canadian west coast country scene we would often have Sunday afternoon jam sessions. We didn't have the famous names but it was great music.. Everyone sharing the stage and taking their leads. We used to call it 'picking and a grinning'.. Our gigs were 4 hours a night and we would play 2 to 4 nights a week... Sadly, these days have all become distant memories but were great fun.. Vince Gill and Albert Lee at the Crossroads concerts are well worth a notable mention.. Keep on Chooglin.. 🎸

Incredible analysis. Yes you could’ve talked another hour non-stop, there was that much talent on stage. But you said quite a bit in such a short time. Thank you for your superior on the fly word selection ability. You presented so much information that my mind was buzzing. I love it when these pickers have these sessions. I think someday the future will look into the past and marvel at the sheer amount of stellar picking artistry that we somewhat take for granted. I listen to the “new” forms of the different music genres and I can already tell there’s a degradation of the keen guitar playing that we’ve had from say 1950 until maybe five years ago. There are still master players, but not as deep in numbers as we’ve known. I could be wrong.

Vince Gill plays nearly every Monday at a club here in Nashville called 3rd and Lindley with a Western Swing group called The Time Jumpers. I've gotten to see them a time or two, and while you might think it could turn into the Viince Gill show, it doesn't. I was also fortunate enough to work with Randy Scruggs back in the mid-80s.
