It was not Dean alone where we looking at Caterina Valente dont forget her she was and still is Simply The Best And still Alive I like them bought 👏👏👏👏💕
Yes, Thursday nights at 9pm central time on NBC. Our family and friends were always at home to watch Dean Martin. It was a rule pretty much with everyone across America back in those times. I really miss Dean Martin! He was like family. The family you loved and wanted to be near anyway. LOL Stay safe and healthy Bill. :)
Dino and Caterina were good friends and really respected each other. It showed every time they performed together. It was also apparent how talented both were.
I know right! Fil , is the greatest storyteller ever. He’s so informative on hundreds of musicians, their genres ,but not only does he know what he’s talking about,he’s so genuine. You can’t fake that smile . Someone who’s a rocker , knows so much more about music my grandparents, and my parents grew up with,so I’m always learning something new. Top notch,as my papa would say . ❤️.
And this perennially vivacious performer is still alive, recently celebrating her 90th birthday. Marvellous teaming up with the equally talented Dean Martin who made everything look so easy. Thanks for featuring these two wonderful artists and especially drawing attention to Caterina's effortless musicianship.
Thank you very much! Caterina Valente is the perfect example for what is soo missed in many of todays "artists"! Not only could she do anything - singing, dancing, acting, playing instruments, but throughout her incredible career she remained very humble and very kind. I adore this woman and she will always be my biggest role model and idol! By the way - you look very cute!
The coming together of different styles and getting the entertainment across to the audience and adding in the humor element. I miss the kind of television that we had back then.
Current entertainers need to take a step back and drink up the talent and abilities oozing from these vintage stars. No electronics, sampling, pitch manipulation. Actual musicians and singers having the times of their lives while executing near-perfect performances. It just doesn't get any better.
I like Dean very much. Everyone who duets with him is always so at ease. I've known he was a very likable person and people really liked to be with him. A huge example of delightful duets are the medleys Dean and Sinatra used to do. Even who is musically illiterate - like me - can see how effortless they do their thing while clowning and having fun. It is sure a different level of entertaining when you have fun, laugh and their natural talent and charm (and chemistry) make it all so unique.
Brilliant! Nothing like this anymore! Just as Dean and Caterina are a breath of fresh air amongst today's madness, you too Fil are a similar breath of fresh air... keep it going.
This was fun! I saw this when you released this but I felt I couldn't comment b/c I was caught up in their chemistry instead of her playing although I watched your analysis. I just now watched it a 2nd time focusing on her playing w/better appreciation of your analysis. Another great one, great job Fil! P.S. We did survive that tornado!
It's unbelievable how much you can learn watching this channel and is so entertaining at the same time. I found Fil on youtube few weeks ago and have been watching his videos everyday, best things in life happen to be free 😁
How could Dean not flirt!!!???!!! The Dean Martin Show definitely was an American favorite. I must say Catelina was spot on and a perfect conductor. Thanks for the chords Fil. 😎👍🏽🎶🔥♥️🔥🎶
I just read about her passing at age 93 in the NYT’s and clicked the link to the Dean Martin video and then to your analysis. A superbly talented entertainer indeed. Thanks for explaining the chord work so well and for highlighting her talent.
Thank you Fil! This brought tears to my eyes. When I was little, my Dad used to sing to the radio. He sounded so much like Dean Martin! Many years later I found out he used to call my Mom on the phone and sing to her! Thanks again for the memories! RIP Mom and Dad!😇🙏❤
Soooooo Dean Martin! Love it. My dad would sing his songs for us kids in the early 60’s, maybe late 50’s and we kept laughing until he was done.Catarena is a great performer. Have never heard her perform before. Thank you for the analysis, Fil.
This was a great analysis. I can't pretend to understand, nor remember the complexities, but I appreciate the skill involved by both her and you to understand and use these chords. Cheers!
Wings of Pegasus, The skill of Dean Martin was to have a T.V. show in which he turned up for the recording of the show with no rehersal's at all. Everyone else had been rehersing for 4 days. They all knew where the camera's etc where. Caterina and Dean was just a nice return to a simpler past. Another one to watch is Dean Flirting with Petula Clark is magic right down to the little pinch of Petula's bottom. Dean and Petula were good friends while she was in L.A. All harmless fun from the day. Thank you for this. Cheers, Chris Perry.
I love how you smiled throughout the video of Dean and Caterina. They were both wonderful, watching this again brought back so many memories of sitting on the living room floor watching Dean's show. Oh, the memories. My parents never missed his show and sometimes we were allowed to stay up and watch.
Fil,I really love the way you dissect every style of music that is presented. I remember watching this performance, and being entertained by not only the technical side, but the pure comedic value as well. Thanks!
I am Brazilian and musician , however, never played one bossa nova song due to be very difficult the chords. I admire the songs, but it is difficult to play them. Bossa nova is not just samba , but samba plus America jazz, the combination is absolutely amazing !
I would sneak down stairs to watch the Johnny Carson show whenever Dean Martin was on. I was 7 to 10 years old and didn't get all of his innuendos but I knew they were funny. Hearing my Mom and Dad laughing so hard made it even better. Still the best memories I have. Thanks Fil. By, the way, you talk about her guitar playing but her voice is exquisite.
This was great! Love your chords/voicings explanation, too. Initially, I thought it was a lot of 9th chords. Dean was quite a "player", huh? She's Italian, too...so she could handle him. :-)
Anyone notice how much she was in absolute control of the whole thing? And listen to that big band - 17 musicians suddenly snapping (and stopping) into a giant wall of sound faster than you can snap your fingers.
I am so glad that, a, Valente's astonishing talent and musicianship is being noted by your generation: she is unpardonably forgotten within her own lifetime, and that b. that she handles Dean's cheesy come-on not just with the confidence of an empowered woman but with the grace and humour of those pre-millenial days when we were allowed to laugh rather than reach for the Twitter
I teach theatre at private academy in Vienna and I always recommend this video to my students as an example for charisma -> Caterina has loads of it, just watch her outshine the sun...
Please Fil I may b the only one aware of Barbara mandrel and her absolute mastery of lap Steele dobro banjo her voice..... It’s mind blowing that she is not known for anything but her voice...
I don't know the word for a "music manager" in show business. But Dean and his never had a contract between them just a handshake for their entire collaboration. I saw this on a 1 hour documentary on an airplane.
Here is a great video from 1980 when Caterina Valente was 49 (now 89) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3Ow_grjdD14.html she sang with, in addition to Dean...Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Ella Fitzgerald and many more stars from the mid 50's - 1970s in the US not mentioning the European stars. She, to me was one of the greatest singers and was the equal of the males she sang with. She was as playful or serious as she needed to be. They rarely outshined her
Dean Martin agreed to do a weekly variety show on the condition that he would not have to rehearse. He hardly did. And that's why it had such a spontaneous and fun feeling.
Great analysis, Fil. So many of these great entertainers from the past are completely overlooked today. Some of what they do can seem a little dated, but there's no denying the amount of talent they had. If you look up the word "suave" in the dictionary, you'll see Dean's picture.
I thought he would have a drink in his hand...lol...but it was just flirting and both were having a good time...But being incredibly talented and professional... but I got a good laugh out of it!!!!!😄😄😄😄😄
Caterina was absolutely and utterly, immensely talented. She spoke numerous languages, sang, played guitar and she could dance! I recently discovered her and can not get enough of her. Thank you for another great analysis of her. Your respect and appreciation of these tremendously talented artists is simply wonderful.
She also acted in several German movies. Her German is very good, she used to be married to a German and acquired German citizenship. Now she lives in Switzerland.
She was the most complete female musician, entertainer personality of the 20. Century. Highly respected. What i have heard she is ok, and enjoys her retirement with Friends and Family.
Anyone who was a decent human made him comfortable. He did a great deal for black artists, he and Frank Sinatra refused to play to segregated audiences, and they made great improvements for black artists in Las Vegas, and Dean made sure there was lots of representation on his show. No doubt he and Frank both remembered being bullied because of being Italian immigrants; it was really bad in the US.
So delightful!!! Caterina is brilliant and such a pro. We had one of her records at home when I was growing up in the 60s. LOL Dino is an Italian man... flirting comes with the territory! I was being flirted with in Italy recently by guys in their 20s and 30s... and I'm 60 years young!
You know, back in my youth, childhood actually, she used to be quite popular here in Germany, too. And was frequent visitor in the TV-Shows. Therefore I had always had this image of her in mind, of being kinda light and mainstream. Only until recently I have realized what a worldwide and talented star she really was...
There have and always will be charmers and harmers alike. Those who are strong and confident enough to be gentle, tolerant, and have compassion, and those too weak to be anything but greedy and self-serving, aggressive and even violent. The main difference between then and now, is we quite literally have *more of everything.* But that means that both entertainment and media have been ultimately corrupted by capitalism without democracy to keep it at bay.
Love love love Dean Martin!!!!!! He just makes me smile!!!! Yes he was flirting! God she is amazing!!!!! I loved watching his Comedy hour and the infamous roasts!!!!!
I remember Catarina on Dean’s show from my childhood (I’m now 67). She was a very talented guitarist, and Dean always flirted with all the ladies on his show. A more relaxed and different time than nowadays!
Saw Catharine Valente with the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Thad Jones in 1986. The best was the to hear her singing while Freddie Green laid out a carpet of rhythm under her smooth voice.
Thanks for the clever analysis of Caterina Valente's guitar playing. That chord changes also give a clue about her great vocal rendition of the song. That little video is a performing masterpice. And cool cat Dino did his best to be funny and respectful!
Caterina is an amazing talent. I'm always so impressed Fil, that you discover these talents and gems from long before your time. Now you want to see some flirting, check out some of Dean's vids with Lainie Kazan who was a regular guest. Your smile as you watch the proceedings is mega-watt, bro. Thanks for all the good work you offer us!
Caterina was a number One Star in Germany and worldwide. She was singer ( in many languages), dancer, artist, movie actor and Show maker. In a movie together with Bill Haley and and and .. don't forget her genious brother and multi instrumentalist Silvio Francesco.
The Pope would have a hard time not flirting with her - just, Wow! Always liked Dean, never saw any ego from him, just fun to be around. Unusual review but, as usual, very well done. Thanks.
That was fun to watch, thank you Fil! :-) I remember Caterina Valente being on German TV aaall the time during my childhood, during the 70's through to the early 80's, and I'd always gotten a somewhat arrogant vibe off her, like she was being a bit of a show-off with her multi-language knowledge. But anyway, I must say I am indeed surprised to learn she used to actually play the guitar and very well, too! Makes me see her in a slightly different light, and she comes across here as really quite charming, too :-) This song also reminds me of some of the stuff Carol Kaye was demonstrating in her documentary. And one more thing I'd like to add, Valente used to also perform together with her brother Silvio Francesco a lot :-)
Caterina always was a very humble, kind and completely down to earth gal! Germans just couldn't cope with her worldwide success as they claimed her to be exclusively "theirs" and were not at all familiar with her many talents and her broad spectrum. Although you don't hear from her much nowadays you'd be surprised for how many artists she still is the ultimate role model as it really doesn't get any better than her!
