Elvis was also influenced by Country western, crooners like Dean Martin, Opera like Mario Lanza, Gospel and Rhythm & Blues and combined them into one sound his sound. That is why he is so unique. He could sing anything. Many other entertainers have their area but he could sing it all, sounded like nobody else and combined it all.

Wow, for such a young man, you really know your Elvis trivia! It's refreshing to see, because having seen over 100 of his shows, having spent time with him at his after-the-late-show parties in Las Vegas, and having received 6 scarves, a teddy bear and many kisses from him, I'm always thinking nowadays that young people don't really know the immensity of his appeal, talent and charisma, or the depth of that honey-sweet voice. And if they go by the imitators, they'll never know.... there was just no one in this world like him. So thank you for a very informative analysis and delightful contribution!

@@sam_realdeal Yes! On more than one occasion! I attended many of his "after-the-late-show parties" in Las Vegas, and also sat next to him on the couch at his home at 144 Monovale Drive in Beverly Hills... He liked to watch TV with no volume, then play his latest recording over and over. (He left the arm of the record player open so the 45 would just keep playing.) That night at his house, he was playing "It's Midnight," which he had just recorded. But before he played it for us (my two friends were with me), he explained the whole song to us very seriously...then played it. I commented on how beautiful the chorus refrain was, and every time it came up after that, he leaned over and shook my knee, saying... "Here's the part you like, honey....here's the part you like..." All you had to do is make one comment on any song, and he'd do the whole song for you right there.... Anyway, there's a snippet for you!

I have always wondered about that teacher. I think context is everything in comprehending something like this. And you have to consider that this was the deep south and the lines were strictly drawn, even in music. She was doubtless hearing blues phrasings in his singing because he heard so much front porch blues in Tupelo. And that was *not* appreciated at the time. He was still a child and couldn't have known what set her off.

Elvis was a musician, he started his career with nothing but a guitar and a voice. He could play guitar piano and bass, as a matter of fact he's playing the bass line in "Baby I Don't Care" in jailhouse rock... Bill Black was having trouble transitioning to Fender Bass and Elvis apparently ended up laying down the track in the film. Anyone that doubts Elvis needs to do some homework. @@mr.smithgnrsmith7808 ,sure, Bob Dylan is a lousy singer, and definitely no great guitarist or harmonica player, but how many songs actually *written* by Elvis Presley can you name? I can name dozens of songs written by Bob Dylan, and I can quote many of them, or major sections of them, from memory, as can most people of my generation who followed music. The sheer number of covers of Dylan songs done by other artists attests to his uniqueness and originality, and his influence. You don't have to like him or his music, but he was an iconoclast, a game-changer to be sure. Elvis was a fantastic singer, no doubt about it, but I think it's fair to say that the real "king" of rock and roll was Chuck Berry, who, had he been white would almost certainly have been at least as big a star as Elvis, probably a bigger star. Like Dylan, Chuck wrote great songs ---- but Chuck Berry's songs were less oblique, more direct and easily understandable by the average teenager in the 1950s then Dylan was in the 1960s.

Awesome analysis! You picked a great performance. Guitar-wise, though, "Love Me" has some very interesting playing. And yes, on "Love Me," he barred a chord because, well, he needed that sound. He did it around twice in the performance, one time almost whispering to himself "aw, play it, son." It's the only time where he needs to look at the guitar a bit. But it made such a low down bluesy sound that someone says "get dirty, baby." Just adding that in. Those sit-down shows are magnificent. As you can see, he has no guitar strap and so can't stand up. Producer/director Steve Binder could have found him a strap, but he didn't. He wouldn't. He wanted to make sure he kept playing rather than getting up and undulating his body, you might say.

I still think it's one of the best live performances ever recorded (if not the best, that's just an opinion anyway). The whole 68 comeback is such a fun show. I especially love the sit-down parts, here Elvis oozes charisma and genuineness. He's putting on a show but at the same you can really see he's having so much fun.

Elvis didn’t need to be a wicked guitar player. When you have those looks, that voice, Scotty Moore and James Burton playing your lead. All he had to do was be Elvis!

if you were a man in 1968 you could have ladies throw themselves at you for just being in the same room as Elvis. Elvis had that kind of power. :)

Hi Cherry! Congratuations and have a great time tonight. I was waiting for your name to pop up again because I wasn't sure if anyone answered you when, during the live stream last Tuesday, you asked how to donate...at the very bottom of the column where the comments are occurring, there's a little dollar sign ($), just click on that and follow the prompts! l was not too young for Elvis and actually got to meet him when I was a child. My neighbor worked at Paramount where he was filming "King Creole". In an effort to cheer up my brother and me after our mom died that summer, she took us to meet The King. He was incredibly kind to us, even having lunch with us in the commissary and recommending the macaroni and cheese!

@ Thank you, Cherry! The 1812 Overture really gets to me, too, but this 4th of July, hearing Dvorak's "New World Symphony" ( the main melody is based on the old folk tune, 'Goin' Home') made me weep. I'm lucky to have such a great brother, we do laugh a lot about when we were little!

OK. Now I have to go listen to Crying in the Chapel again since it is a ridiculously good vocal performance by Elvis and I'm not even that religious. By the way, the thing that bugs me a bit about people knocking Elvis's guitar playing is that he never claimed to be some great guitar player, it was always about the voice and the style.

There is no doubt Elvis played guitar and could do it well if need be!! .... I've seen him in person play the guitar, all his first songs, he played rhythm while Scotty played lead...if this video doesn't convince the doubters, I know of a few more where he's playing alone!

Good video! Elvis just probably didn't really want his guitar playing to stand out, just his singing, dancing and looks were enough I reckon. He was just a natural born performer just waiting for the world to discover him.

Gary Powell... that might be the reason why Elvis lost his roots between 1960 to 1967 he got caught up in making films that created an image for his fans.

Besides that Elvis was so talented and had one of the greatest voices in music history, he was also a great entertainer. Funny and flirty like in this video. An artist that really appreciated he's audience. The video where he performs the Unchained Melody is heartbreaking. Still trying to deliver the best of himself to his audience, though anyone can see that he was in a very bad condition.

Thank you once again for sharing another Elvis clip! Elvis and Buddy Holly had rudimentary music skills but have made a much bigger impact than many virtuoso musicians... successful musicians make a connection with people and virtuoso’s impress musicians and other audience members with technical abilities which are wonderful! Great analysis, thanks Fil. Elvis certainly had his fair share of discouragement in his early days - I think it was his first appearance on the Grand Ol' Opry where he was told he should try some other means of making a living. Interesting what you say about Elvis the highly confident professional entertainer and his own personal diffidence. In her autobiography ("Be My Baby"), Ronnie Spector tells of meeting Elvis backstage in Las Vegas and how she found him to be a shy person. One of the (many) things I've always liked about Elvis was his readiness to laugh at himself - you see it here aplenty. I noticed this same characteristic in Lisa-Marie, once on the Oprah show - it was actually so like Elvis that it was uncanny.

People confuse lack of confidence with his being shy and anxious. When he got on stage though, He was very confident. But his dad said after Elvis died that in 1958 when his mom died that Elvis died. His soul was gone but his shell remained. His band members said that as well, that the Elvis that knew before he went in the army and the one after his mom was 2 different people. They said he was drifting though his mother’s faith that his mom left him he remained strong in faith, though he found it hard to turn down the ladies who threw themselves at him

Elvis is the most unique singer of all time and he sang like a black person. That makes no sense. Elvis was influenced by all kinds of music, but he didn’t sing it steal from anyone . No one accuses Nat King Coke of stealing white music. I’ve never heard any black artist song like Elvis. He’s the most unique artist I know of.

Elvis was a good guitar player and quite a comedian. I didn't know that he hung around the black people. It shows that a musician's surroundings can be a positive influence on the style they play or sing. Another great review Fil
