Hey Fil, I know you usually examine music videos, but have you ever done fox hunter vs. sab (what pro-foxhunting people call saboteurs for short) videos? They are crazy entertaining. Especially the ones from the West Midlands. To an American, they are fascinating to watch.

The gal with blond hair on keyboards and background vocals, on Harry's right size, often plays the tambourine. She wasn't shown as much in that section of tambourine, so maybe that's why?

I don’t know why they discount you if you’re in a boy band. You still have to have talent. Musicians are just that, musicians. They deserve more credit then they get.
@OceanChild7
@OceanChild7 3 года назад
because boybands of 90's were overflowing "the market" and there was much more commercial aspect to them than the talent and the art of music. On the other hand, One Direction stands out because they had all three aspects perfectly executed there but general public only notices the commercial part of them, sadly. The more they're silent, though, the more commercial part is forgotten and it allows their performances and the music itself speak for them.

They all kinda have done George Michael. Naill Horan makes great music, like Harry, he has 2 albums out. He just doesn't have Harry's "swag" factor (he's got his own tho xD) and his level of popularity is much lower than Harry's at least it was stepping out of the band. But it shouldn't be relevant in this channel's audience, should it?)) He's a huge Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Bruce Springsteen fan, and it shows in his lives. Louis Tomlinson imo had a great debut album out, it's not ideal due to various reasons but it's a good one. And he's making the second at the moment, I hope to hear growth and experiment there. Zayn's not my genre at all but his innovative approach to it has my respect anyway. Liam Payne's been through rough patch but I still hope he'll get back to making his own music cuz I really liked what he did in 1D. What I'm trying to say, they all make their own music and I actually enjoy most of it, even though I never knew I would like anything related to One Direction, I've been cringing at the name for 10 years and I haven't even given them one listen. I was wrong. Despite widely spread opinion that they were manufactured lipsynching autotuned band, they wrote their own stuff and performed it live really well, they sold out stadiums, which wasn't that common at the time. The footage from their live shows confirms their audience wasn't just teen girls. I hope they'll gain more respect when commercial dust setlles in, it's already happening.

Ok, I'll admit I am a fan of Harry. But not because of his boy band days, but because of his pure talent. He reminds me of David Bowie in the '70's. He's his own, unique person, expressing himself with a great feel for music, whether it's singing a song he wrote or songs from other artists.

I admit to having an aversion to boy bands so I wasn’t inclined to like Harry Styles from the outset but I was impressed by his Fine Line album. And when I began watching his live performance videos including the one he did on the Graham Norton my admiration grew. Add the fact that he has an actual full time band with talented musicians my respect was well earned. It’s uncanny how his voice has a similar tenor to Peter Gabriel, he truly is a great talent. Interesting nugget from Fil about his producing experience, it would be good to hear more about that.

One Direction may surprise you as well! I just found Harry around the time he was on Stern and from there did some digging into One Direction. They were nothing like the boy bands of my time (like NKOTB, Color Me Badd, BSB). They didn't dance (well, they did some terrible but awesome dancing that wasn't choreographed, they just moved on stage with amazing stage presence), didn't dress alike and were complete chaos in the best way. They started having a lot more say creatively and did most of the writing by their third album which was much more rock than pop. They also had a live touring band (the same band throughout their career), one of the guys (Niall Horan, who is also killing it solo now) played guitar during most performances, and were 100% live without a ton of tech or auto tune. They were the real deal! I was pleasantly surprised and they now make up most of my playlist.

@@jens309 I agree with all you said 100%. They get written off as a "boy band", but they were nothing like a regular boy band. And I'm saying this as someone who grew up on classic rock, and NEVER liked boy bands. I guess I was an old soul, because all my friends loved current pop and boy bands, but I was listening to the Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, the Doors, Van Morrison, the Eagles, etc. 1D was really different, and they are all talented and their personalities were very charismatic, esp. Harry. They're def worth a listen. They are also no. 1 on my playlist even though I didn't discover them until after I heard Harry's solo music.

I noticed all of the things you explained so well in this analysis, but really didn't know how to describe them to others, as I am not a musician, just a music enthusiast who is still learning. I have always loved good music, and when I accidentally found Harry ("Sledgehammer" was one of the first live performances I've heard from him), I was gushing about him to all my friends, who were just slightly amused by my obsession.. but really, they did not bother to check him out, because of the boy band stigma. I'm not as familiar with Harry Stiles (a little after my time with the "Boy Band" phenomenon), but VERY familiar with Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer". Harry seems to also be channeling Peter's oddness in the way he's dressed. Incredible that they played that live and it stands up perfectly next to the original recorded version. So very rare, IMO. And he didn't even make any attempt to put his own signature on it. I really liked it. I turned 50 last Monday and I've ordered a Banjo as a present to myself. For years I've been tempted to learn to play, and this is the year I'll make that happen.

I’m a huge 1D stan and it always made me really uncomfortable that people would discredit any of the boys. It’s quite misogynistic when you get to the root of why people automatically dislike young male bands with large female audiences. All of the lads from 1D are insanely talented but are highly discredited because of people’s opinions of boy bands. When people do a little research and decide not allow their implicit biases to control their opinions suddenly they find out that all of them have an incredible impact on the music industry. Also Harry is proud of what 1D gave him, he always says in interviews how upsetting it is for people not take his career seriously, to want him to dislike his own band he worked so hard in and his past. His talent was there from the start it’s other people’s mistakes when they cannot realize this.

oh my God, this kind of comment is what actually I was looking for. you said it perfectly. like you, it also breaks my heart a little whenever I see people just don’t want to give 1D a chance just because they’re a “boyband”. people just don’t take them seriously because they have massive female fanbase. now that they all have their solo career, then people start noticing and realize that they’re all talented musicians.

@hannahnur6784
@hannahnur6784 3 года назад
@@hermionedannunzio9422 Negative opinions are unecessary. It boils down to your personal taste in music who you feel has better talent. Also you must know the advantages that were given to some and taken from others. For example Harry was given every opportunity whilst Liam and Louis wrote the majority of the lyrics that Harry became most famous for singing. Niall taught Harry to play guitar. Zayn has a remarkable voice but because of his Pakistani Muslim background he was less sellable to the majority islamafobic public . They instead went with Harry because he was more easily sellable. You also need to understand how the music industry works. Just because a person has the biggest financial backing doesn’t mean that they did all the work themselves. The person who is behind the scenes putting together the lyrics and melodies for the show deserves their share of consideration. The X Factor is designed for 1 person to be the stand out star so they put everything behind the easily sellable person. They will sabotage the others in the group to get the outcome that they planned on all along. Most people don’t want to pay enough attention to what is really happening.!They just want to see something shiny.

Peter Gabriel’s original “Sledgehammer” was defined as much, if not more, by the MTV video with the song as it was by the music. The same goes for the Talking Heads “Burning Down the House” and The Clash’s “Rock the Casbah.” The release of those videos roughly marked the beginning and the end of my grad school career and the heyday of MTV. It’s nice to revisit the music as music and not just a component of a video.

Hi Fil , how's it going ? I think this performance is a mix of great talented people . Just loved the drummer! I am always impressed by the amount of information you deliver us , just love when you demonstrate the guitar part. One day I would like to see you play and sing the whole song after the analysis 😁 Congrats 👏🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷

Fil ! ... I wasn't "tapping my foot". But my head did nod, while "playing drums" on my desk ! ... If I wasn't otherwise, dancing around my room. Harry, with the Band; succeeded in staying so deep in the Groove. You could say, " He was in the Pocket". It was Freakin' Brilliant ! ;-)

In all fairness, remarkably good. Very fine drummer and HS himself sings well. It’s still a cover, but if you’re going to cover anything by anyone from the Genesis stable, you’ve got to be pretty damn’ sure of yourself. Credit where credit’s due.

Core blimey !!! Sarah Jones does a fantastic job. She’s the one elevating this excellent cover. She reminds me so much of Charlie Watts and Ringo Starr in her approach to drumming. Concrete steady , keeping it brilliantly basic and not jeopardising the beat & tempo with anything unnecessary show offs. Only 1 real fill at the end of the song. To me , that’s the true mark of a master craftsman. I bow in admiration.

showing how little I know about music (I was an 80's teen) in Peter Gabriel's original I was impressed (though I shouldn't have been surprised) at how good the woman doing background vocals was amazing. I didn't realize till only recently when watch a live performance that she was the incredible Paula Cole. "and there we have it."

Vocally it's pretty good (8/10) but Gabriel's voice has so many harmonics it's almost impossible to replicate to that richness.

I agree.Peter Gabriel gives this song a much grittier, sexy quality to this very erotic song I dont get that from Harry at all. Thanks again Fil for showing us such diversity. You're enthusiasm and knowledge is so appreciated as always Dont cut you're hair too much ...More men should have long hair😎😉 You look fabulous!

I don’t think that Harry is trying to replicate anyone. He is always showing us his own colors. And those colors are unique and wonderful.

LOVE the number of female musicians in his band. I would never wear pearls with a peter pan collar, but damn, he can pull it off. As always, thanks for the history of the band. All the members leaving to go solo makes WAY more sense now. I know of One Direction, because they were on James Corden ALL THE TIME, and they always seemed to be lovely boys.

This is a great cover! Harry made it his own. The entire song is one big innuendo… unbeknownst to 12 year old me! I love Peter Gabriel’s videos, especially Sledgehammer, Big Time, Steam, amongst others.

I LOVE the original, but I also LOVE this version. I wish he would release it so I didn't have to always watch on youtube. 😄 I was never a fan of his boyband days because I was too old, but as an adult I really like his solo work. Just like someone else said, like George Michael. Im glad Harry got to break away.

I Love the sound of the Shakuhachi bamboo flute ! To bad Peter Gabriel used a synthesizer in the intro, instead of the real thing. Do you know what I mean ? It was a synthesized time in music though, so I get it. But a real one still would have been cooler ! Harry Styles was really good and enjoyed the analyses. Thanks Fil !!
