James Brown was in his own league. Beyond being a character. He had fun with life but got into life wrecks all the time. God bless his soul. It must have been complicated at the pearly gates for James and he was probably taken into a side room by St. Peter. :-) His music is with us forever thank heavens.

I love that term. American originals. That describes Elvis Presley perfectly. Initially, the king was the new unique progressive fusion of black blues with white country western. It was pure dynamite. Then, after the 50's, Elvis becomes soul depth and diversity personified. James brown, johnny cash chuck berry buddy holly Jerry Lee, etc...all originals.

Back in the day (late 80's) I got to see the Stones twice one summer, in St Louis and KC. Anyway one thing I noticed about Jagger was he danced the same way on every song. Kind of humorous. Oh also on that tour Living Color was the opening act for both concerts. IIRC this was the tour supporting the release of Steel Wheels.

Ah Fil, you sound so white in your intro. I thought the track was just called Sex Machine. You'll notice how the audience was so white (they all seemed to be back then). Had it been a black audience he would not have had to encourage them to "get up". .must say Funk is my favourite dance rhythm. How about some Sly Stone (A great version of 'If you want me to stay' is by Judith Hill, I think you'll really enjoy that one). Great analysis once again, I especially enjoyed when Paul was looking over his shoulder to watch James play.

If you have never heard of Disco Tex and His Sex-O-Lets, He (they) were a funky, campy 2hit Wonder Act when funk had a morph into early disco. I think Tex was MORE over the top than Bro. James! Word! LOL

I can't see Hiram Bullock without remembering his playing on Sting's cover of "Little Wing". Paul Shaffer used to do a parody of James Brown's cape routine to the Blood Sweat and Tears song "More Than You'll Ever Know", where they would have a guest person on "cape" every time. I'll put an example in the replies.

"MOMMA COME HERE QUICK......AND BRING ME THAT 'LICKEN' STICK'!!!"(AN INSTRUMENT FOR ADMINISTERING AN"ASS WHUPPIN') SURELY ONE OF THE STRANGEST SONG TITLES EVER CONCIEVED.JAMES BROWN WAS UNIQUE IN SEVERAL ASPECTS.IN SOME WAYS HIS HYPNOTIC,MONOTONOUS,ENDLESSLY DELAYED BRIDGE IN SONGS ACTED AS MERELY A VEHICLE FOR HIS HIGHLY GYMNASTIC,MONOMANICAL LIVE STAGE SHOWS(IN MY OPINION).JAMES BROWN DEFINITELY INFLUENCED THE MUSICAL STARS THAT CAME AFTER HIM IN SOUL MUSIC,BUT ALSO IN ROCK AND POP MUSIC AS WELL.FROM HIS DISTINCTIVE STYLE OF MUSIC WHICH LED ZEPPELIN PAID HOMAGE TO ON THEIR ALBUM"HOUSES OF THE HOLY"WITH THEIR SONG "THE CRUNGE"THAT EXPLORES THE JAMES BROWN MODE OF SONGS,JIMMY PAGE SUBSTITUTING A SYNTHESIZER FOR THE HORN SECTION,AND ROBERT PLANT EMPHASIZING THE ENDLESS DELAY OF A BRIDGE IN THE WIND DOWN OF THE SONG WITH HIS,"I'M JUST LOOKIN'FOR THE BRIDGE......I'M JUST TRYIN'TO FIND THE BRIDGE.....HAS ANYBODY SEEN THE BRIDGE.....WHERE'S THAT CONFOUNDED BRIDGE !!!???!!!" AND YOU HAVE OTHER STARS CONCENTRATING ON HIS DANCE MOVES LIKE MICK JAGGER,MICHAEL JACKSON,AND PRINCE BEING THE MOST PROMINENT OF HIS EMULATORS.AND WE MUST NOT FORGET THAT JIMI HENDRIX PLAYED BRIEFLY IN JAMES'BACKUP GROUP,"THE FAMOUS FLAMES"IN 1966 BEFORE HIS METEORIC RISE TO HIS OWN LEGENDARY FAME THE FOLLOWING YEAR. p.s.JAMES BROWN RECORDED MOST OF HIS EARLIER SONGS AT KING RECORDS IN MY HOMETOWN,CINCINNATI ,OHIO.IN 1973 I WORKED WITH A REMODELING COMPANY AND WE REMODELED THE CONTROL BOOTH AT KING RECORDS TWO OR THREE YEARS BEFORE THEY CLOSED FOREVER.IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN,HANK WILLIAMS RECORDED AT KING AS WELL IN THE LATE 40s AND EARLY FIFTIES AS DID THE STANLEY BROTHERS.

I knew Paul Shaffer from the Letterman show as the leader of the house band back in the day. In several of your analyses his name has come up. I saw him in a BTO video from 2010 and some others as well. I'm starting to play my own little game of "Where's Waldo" with Paul! Seems he's worked with quite a few bands. Keep them coming Fil!!
