On the smoker you get tour in 70's.. We had the keg in the tail gate party before the concert... After the concert we stayed in the parking lot ... About 3am when everyone was gone we were still partying... A limo shows up and its Joe ...he partied with us after his show ... I'll never forget it...
Just like I said before, I never said I was as good as him but yet you can’t comprehend that I admire him and his work, so you must be judge and jury about him?
@@billhutchison7078I’m sorry, but where did that come from? If I made any comment to a post of yours( which I can’t find), I apologize, and if I did and it offended you, that was not my intention. I’m no one’s judge and jury and don’t recall any comment that implicated I was. I hope this reply of yours was for someone else and not me. Again, I sincerely apologize. Friends? 🤝
My dad is really good friends with him. He taught me how to drum roll when I was about 10 on my practice pad. He's always been a favorite drummer for the active style he has. He recently got the Joe to perform at the Taylor Hawkins tribute show. Cool guy, loves license plates and old metal signs.
Every time I happen to be screen sharing with my girlfriend and you upload a new video when she sees it pop up she says "Hello, Fil here from Wings of Pegasus!" :D
It’s amazing to me that these songs have stayed relevant for 50 years. When I was a teen this tune came on FM radio (new then) and friend cranked it up and yelled, “this is a great song!” I later met Joe and he was an avid vintage guitar collector. He was recently seen racing around the slopes in Aspen, CO with Ringo Starr and their families hanging out at Christmas. I always loved the percussion break and guitar work in this one.
Heard a radio interview years ago, and someone (artist? producer? can't remember) was talking about what a quick study Joe is, when working studio sessions. Play it for him once, play it with him once, record it. True talent. Even though Barnstorm is one of my favorite albums, Joe broke my heart when he quit the James Gang.
Was of fan of Joe's ever since I heard the song "Walk Away" with the James Gang back in the early 70s. Joe also produced Dan Fogelberg's Souvenirs album, which I loved. Maybe my favorite Joe Walsh Album was "So What".
Love 'Walk Away" also. Played in a band at this time and we covered "Funk 49" and "Walk Away." So did every other rock band in existence at that rime. Fun to play.
Jim Fox is such a rudimentary drummer. I mean that in the most technical sense. He's not just jamming. He has trained himself in so many incredible foundational skills (Snare Drummer's Practise Rudiments is the exact name of the book where these come from. Yes, practice with an S) . He is so fluid with his fills and his funky beats, but put him up against a metronome. Real drummers are fascinated with what he does. He was still fantastic in the James Gang post Walsh as well. Check out the instrumental James Gang song Pick Up The Pizzas if you need proof. Even without Walsh, that song keeps you hooked and there's no vocals. I believe the late great Dominic Troiano was the guitarist during that version of the James Gang. Joe picked Dominic to replace him. Jim Fox is so solid. I was in a James Gang cover band just after high school and I just got a text from the guy who played drums for me 20 years ago in that band saying he saw the James Gang in the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert (Jim was Taylor's favorite drummer) and wants to play again. I'm a massive Joe Walsh fan and he learned to love Jim Fox from the way he had to listen to what he did in order to get it right. You know if you are looking for a drummer and they know who Jim Fox is, then they will be funky, liberal with their fills, be showcased just by showing up, and stay in the pocket the entire time.
Hey! Number 1!! Always liked Joe with the James Gang. Walsh was comfortable being “loosey goosey” with either lead or rhythm, his having fun was always out front.
Joe is a legend ,great player, and always with a sense of humour, doesnt take himself too seriously, and great live ,had a tough time over the years ,but still going ,and as good as ever.
I believe she wrote it when inspired and saddened by the death of Joe's young daughter. Its worth looking up. I already did a long time ago. I ain't wasting any more time doin it again.
I agree. Glenn Frey said that no one compliments a vocal line like the way Joe does. Carlos Santana is very, very similar. Much less shredding, even when it sounds like shredding, and much more precise playing. In truth, Joe's masterpiece song The Confessor has a wonderful guitar solo where Joe blows a note. He admitted it and it's glaring, but he kept it in because it sounds like he's pushing the boundaries more than he makes a mistake. I love that honesty from someone who is so emotional and still technical in his playing.
Greetings Phil and that’s my favorite song by Joe Walsh🎸🎤👍 I also want to let you know to my friend that I have been spreading your name around to my celebrity musician friends on Facebook and Twitter and encouraging them to come to your channel because I have let them know that it’s the best all around musical channel on RU-vid🙌
Joe, Failed Musician shirt, Cow Bells, Hot backup singers, Fill's live Stream tonight, and a demo by the Professor giving us a great Fender Guitar demo, It's going to be a great day, Jeff in LA USA
Oh yes,Gorgeous Fil,I like it ! was dancing over here having a good time, stopping to enjoy the scenery of this beautiful British guitarist/hot teacher💋❣
John Entwhistle made a album called To Late The Hero and Joe played on all songs on that I think and John played on Joe's albums also ..Joe even played with Ringo's All Stars band and played on Ringos last album ..He is very well liked by all in the business . Joe's style of slide playing definitely makes him my fav in that category ....He just knows how to get the right mood and style out of every song he does.. Have you seen the vid I Can Play Than Rock and Roll ? He is even a great comedian
Without the muting of strings groove that Fil is talking about, which makes this song totally amazing and wonderful... well, the song would just be named #49. HAHA I've loved this song since I first heard it in high school in 1971. So cool.
My band! My song! My youth! I really enjoy watching your reactions to the classic groups and singer/guitar players. You always explain things so well, usually pointing out things that I would never have known to ask about but make me understand the music so much better! Thanks again!
I just LOVE Joe Walsh! Funk 49 is the first song of his (w/James Gang) I ever heard, back when I was a senior in high school. And that was about 49 years ago! When the song first came out videos were not very common, so the only image I’d seen of him was a picture from an album cover. Based on his music, I always thought of him as a very serious hard rocker type dude. But since videos are more common now, especially RU-vid, it’s been great to see him play. The one thing that strikes me the most is how much fun and how funny he is. He always seems to be having such a good time. I saw an Eagles concert from Australia on Axis TV a few weeks ago. And again, he had such a good time playing, singing and playing around, especially with his facial expressions. - Thank you so much for featuring him on your channel segment. I am no musician, but somehow you explain things in such a way that I feel like I’ve actually understood and learned more about the artist than I did before watching it.
I left NYC when I was 38 in 1998. First stop was New Orleans for 2 years. 2nd stop was South Florida. Just north of Miami is a town called Hallandale. There’s a Horse racetrack there called Gulf Stream. It was one of three tracks in a 20 mile radius. To entice patrons to come gamble and bet on horses they would put on concerts. They would have great bands there every Saturday. I saw Cheap Trick, Grand Funk, Steppenwolf, Bryan Adams, and Mr. Joe Walsh. I was 40 by the time I saw him live. As a teenager Rocky Mountain Way was like an anthem for us. I’m not sure what took me so long. From the 1st note until he said thank you and goodnight, he just nailed it. One of the best singer, song writer, and amazing guitarists of all time. A true professional. Thank you Fil, Your choices in every genre are spot on. Joe Walsh is no exception
Isn't Joe Walsh great? He just looks likes having fun all the time. Funk #49 was one of the very first songs I ever played with a band in about 1972. And you gotta love the backup "Hippie chick" singers!
Thanks for sharing your professional perspective Fil. Such mind-blowing astonishing talent! Also enjoyed seeing you crank out those tunes as well! Killer!!!
Joe is one of the greats. Saw him do one of those "gear" vids a while back where he goes through the process of tuning a new LP. He has a very specific way he likes the pickups and bridge that gets that raw sound (although here he is using strat). Saw him in 78?79? he seemed completely trashed yet...never missed a note or a lyric. I thought the whole being "completely wasted" deal was just a stage persona for years. Found out later, no..he really was wasted. He was just so good he could perform dead on perfect in his sleep.
James Gang was my introduction to Joe Walsh. What I think of Joe's technique is he never looks like he is working on it. I looks like he is so comfortable with where he is going on the fretboard. Effortless and having fun. It is a joy to watch him. It took me years to get the sound as you described with the continuous strumming and muting strings. When you play it right, you know it immediately. Thanks for the review and the guitar playing section. Nice to know I had it right.
Thanks for playing on this one Fil. Joe is one of the best on guitar. He's got an interesting vocal style also - none like him. He can also tear down a Fender Amp and rewire it, as well as put together an AM transmitter from scratch and talk 300 miles away from his house in Ca. Joe is no dummy...
Your 'reaction' videos [ actually educational videos for performers ], convinced me to look at your Wings of Pegasus music videos, and WOW! Your talent is absolutely remarkable. I really hope that you're doing what you love to do, as it is great stuff. Keep going, and keep playing.
Thanks for doing this one. Excellent analysis of The performance and Joe's playing. The James Gang is one of those bands that a lot of my younger friends have never heard of, but they were always a favorite of mine. We picked up a live album at a 2nd hand store by them that was released in 1971. One of the better live albums we've stumbled across. "Walk Away" from that album sounds great turned up as loud as I can get it! The guitar, bass, and drum line up truly shows there are times where less is more.
Love Joe! The technique, the attitude, the guitar style & feel and those unique vocals that make Joe Joe! Great player great original vocalist. A true classic artist. In my touring days in the 70s and 80s we did 75 % original material, selecting our cover material carefully. A lengthy Funk 49 was one we covered that always blew the crowds away. Been a huge fan since the James Gang and his GREAT inventive solo stuff..that classic Joe sense of humour! Fantastic analysis Fil! Thanks! 🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
My dream has always been to play a guitar! Even if it was just one song!! I just saw Joe a few months back with the Eagles and he's just awesome live. But here.. your breakdown of his playing the guitar is just top notch! Makes me want to start up trying to play again. Awesome Video Fil!! My favorite of yours by far. I used to have a Telecaster. Again great stuff
Great breakdown man! Joe Walsh truly is the full package of musician, singer songwriter and performer. Always love folks that play with a sense of humor about it. Although Joe could get pretty dark....thinking of Confessor. Heavy tune! ✌🏻🎸🎼
Artists who could have both a sense of humor and a serious side have always been underrated and underappreciated . I love Joe , he always slips an involuntary smile on my face .
My friend, you do THE BEST JOB breaking down and evaluating musicians and their songs of anyone I’ve ever heard! Your experience coupled with technical expertise is very impressive to say the least! Keep up the GREAT WORK!
Saw them back when they were touring to support "James Gang Rides Again." I've always like Joe as a guitar player and lead because he has always seemed to be real, both in his playing and in his attitude towards the music business. Fil, so good to see you on guitar, using that as a visual/aural aid.
Joe and the James Gang were awesome, covered some of their stuff back in day including this song, was able to pull it off fairly well, another fine rundown Fil,thanks......ROCK!!....
Love the dynamics in Joe’s playing...coupled with his layback feel he’s just amazing! One of the greatest rock guitarist of our time! Really cool Fil! Cheers Mario! 😀👌👍
I remember when "James Gang Rides Again" hit the charts, around 1970. That album created a sensation. If Joe Walsh had done nothing else in his musical career, other than create that album; Joe Walsh still would have been remembered for all time as a great rock guitarist. But as it turns out, of course; Joe Walsh continued to do so much more and did so for decades. (PS: Nice-looking bitches on-stage as the back-up vocalists.)
George X...I was in the U.S. Navy 71-75 and I remember listening to the James Gang a lot. Do you remember his album " The Smoker You Drink The Player I Get"? The title was/is a great title !!
Remember James Fox, the drummer in the original JG. Very overlooked, but terrific drummer. Originally with the Outsiders doing "Time Won't Let Me." Check it out on YT.
@@MrWahooknows Don't remind me. Those guys were having all the fun, back in the early Seventies, surrounded by hot women who were their groupies, while I was just a boring college student.
Holy crap, he sounds better now than on the original recording. This man was all over the radio when I was a little kid, and I am about to turn 56 in a few months.
FIL, THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO, AND YOUR GREAT COMMENTS, I LOVE WHEN YOU PLAYED YOUR GUITAR ON THIS, A PLUS , I CAN WATCH YOU, AND LEARN TO PLAY THIS NOW. JOE IS ONE OF A KIND, HE SOUNDS LIKE JOE PLAYING A STRAT OR HIS LES PAUL, I AM GLAD THAT HE STOPPED PARTYING 20 YEARS AGO, OTHERWISE JOE MAY NOT BE AROUND TODAY, HE WAS OUT ON A LIMB BACK THEN, BUT HE COULD STILL PUT ON A SHOW, AND PLAY WELL. HE IS RINGO STARR'S BROTHER IN LAW, HE MARRIED RINGO'S WIFES SISTER, MAY HE PLAY FOREVER, HE GAVE THE WORLD SOME GREAT MUSIC, ROCK ON, COUSIN FIGEL
Hi Fil! Your videos have given me a new appreciation of guitar players! Listening to the different styles of each one has been such a rewarding experience! Since my son is a drummer I always notice the drums! I have to admit that Walsh has to be one of the top musicians! Joe is always comfy with his music! Thanks for this one! I agree that backing musicians make the music! They just add that extra pizazz when they are good! Peace! ✌️
All your videos are good, always interesting but some of them stand out more than others. This one was great. It really helps when you demonstrate the techniques you're talking about.
Joe's just wonderfully chaotic. In everything he does,both in music and life. My parents were touring country and western musicians.My Father played a Fender Triple Neck Steel(1955)which plugged into his Fender amp,and my Mother played Rythm and sang. She taught me to play bar chords when I was 11 yrs old. I had to use her specially made Martin rythm guitar. She had small hands so they made her one with a thinner neck. My hands are small as well,which is why she taught me on hers. My Dad had a 50's Gibson as well as the Steel,but he only played it at home,with me listening to his own little tunes. He would write them just for me,and no one else was allowed to hear them. :}
I saw the James Gang in concert back when they were starting out. I somehow ended up on the front row. One thing I remember is when Joe Walsh used his microphone stand as a slide for his guitar. Thanks for the post.
Hey Fil really digging the guitar emphasis. Awesome SRV vid too didn't get a chance to comment....sometimes it's hard when I have too much to say as in the case of Stevie.
I’ve sung this song for decades and never knew the name of the band or Joe was in charge!!!! Thanks! Very nice analysis! You are playing like you aren’t even thinking!!!! Like you are thinking about your next cup of tea! Amazing!!!!
Love that man’s playin and singing. All guitar plays that are good BECOMES. He does the music with his fingers voice body and lips. Which get audience looking at him and Joe making them enjoy too.
Forgetting Joe Walsh for a moment, since he's been regularly recording and touring all these years, I am IMPRESSED with how the rhythm section of Fox and Peters still has the chops after all these years of not playing, or very rarely! James Fox, the "James" of the James Gang, because it was originally HIS band, is being awfully modest with the shirt that reads "FAILED MUSICIAN". No, mate--you're still one of my favorite drummers with a nice touch all your own!
I thought the same, Bass and Drums are on par with Joe. I own the original album, had it since the 70s. Awesome Band. Glad to see JG performing live. How about the back up singers? Nice addition that didn't take anything away from the original track

@@seansturgill4869 First of all, I'm glad to see Fox get his due by a younger generation of drummers, because the last generation has completely forgotten about him. And if his style of drumming is considered "bad drumming" by the elitists of the drum world, then I guess I like "bad drumming". I would call it "complimentary drumming", because his style, in my opinion, adds a touch of class to Joe's thrashing chords, and its a nice contrast. Not like Led Zeppelin, where everything is going in the same pounding direction
I was this little girl and I knew Joe was playing at the ROXY That night and wasn't able to get a friend to go with But I had my parents drop me off- Down in Cleveland (my parents didn't know any better) , There was not very many people around the ticket booth so I walked up to it and said sold out? She was really nice and had the security guys took me to the middle of the Front row of seats. I got a birds eye view of Joe & BARN STORM!!! Will never forget!!!!!
I am always mesmerized by such amazing guitarists like Joe Walsh. Half the time I miss the singing because I'm so focused on the guitars. He's just the whole package; singer, songwriter, top notch guitarist. Nothing he ever did was bad. Even when he was completely bashed, he never missed a beat!
