Her version of Roy Orbison’s “Crying” is phenomenal too. Would love to see you do an analysis, maybe with both her version and Roy Orbison’s version. They’re both amazing and she references Roy’s version without imitating it, just paying tribute- by the time she’s done singing “Crying” you feel that she’s owned the song.

You are absolutely right. kd was on a tour in Australia, and sang 'Crying' on Australian TV 'the Midday Show' (around 1993), before a live audience of middle-aged, frumpy Aussies, who probably didn't even fully appreciate what she did. Challenged by the host to sing her signature song, she said she had not rehearsed it with the house band, wasn't ready, and then proceeded to blow it away in what I think may be her best rendition ever. If you haven't heard it, and you like her music, please, go listen and watch.

KD Lang has a unique voice that moves like water, stretches a vocal line like taffy, and melts over the listener like butter. She has a mastery of the cry and slide and vibrato like no other. It's incredibly challenging to sing this way because it requires moving through multiple vocal registers with almost no disconnection. She's definitely inspired by Patsy Cline and has taken that style to another level with her incredible emotion, interpretation, and dynamic range. It all comes together to touch our heart in a deep unique way. She's a master of storytelling through song that makes every song she sings her own felt expression.

I think you missed the eschatological significance of a song composed by a Levite of the House of Aaron, calling people to REPENT ("She broke your throne, she cut your hair,") RETURN ("I've been here before, I've seen this room, I've walked the floor,") RECONCILE ("I've told the truth, I didnt come to fool you,") and REJOICE ("I'll stand here before the Lord of Song, with nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah,") The Great Hallel is Psalm 136, His Love Endures Forever. Cohen wrote a great psalm of praise

I thought of how you describe the "cry" in vocal performances and how it reaches so deep into our brains, when I read this today : "Human babies can call for help. It is all they can do. They can't run or stand or fight or hide. It's all they do for a long time. It's the first and most important human skill. This cry for help is a request, but it's also a declaration. It declares a biological faith in kindness." (The Cyrptonaturalist). No wonder we get goosebumps hearing KD Lang sing Hallelujah. Thanks for the awesome analysis!

I’m gobsmacked! technically, MORE than Perfect because she refuses to sing the song the way we all know it perfectly. she sings HER song perfectly. And that song takes you to a place that I’ve not gone to in this a song before. She’s heartbroken, despairing, maybe even hateful, cynical. hallelujah isn’t always about joy, But it could be a cry of deep and intense pain, a condition of life. And I think it’s great that she brought it there because we don’t want to look at that side of life and how there’s so much of that in this with an invitation to touch it and feel it. So corageous. She really wanted to do that for us;she believed in the need to express that and for us to feel it too,and she brought it to us full on incredible no hesitation just full on so beautifully so hauntingly.

Another emotional performance of this song was when she sang it for Leonard Cohen at his induction into the Canadian Songwriters' Hall Of Fame, after which she bowed in front of him - her being an adherent of Tibetan Buddhism, and Cohen having spent 5 yrs in a Zen monastery. I first her kd lang when she sang Cole Porter’s “So In Love” on Letterman. Unforgettable.. went out and got that album immediately. That vibrato is truly magnificent. Notice she starts it towards the middle or end of the note. Shows how confident she is of her pitch. A lot of singers use vibrato to help find the pitch, so it’s a crutch. It’s truly an ornament for her. Beautiful.

I do love her version of Hallelujah, but honestly, Constant Craving was a revelation. I was a young kid when it came out, but I remember sitting in the shade on bright summer days with a radio (or cassette player, because yeah, that old!) and hearing that distinctive voice on the breeze. Thanks for a great video and analysis.

One more time, Fil you’ve helped me hear what I haven’t heard before in a performance! Not only has K.D. Lang been gifted with a beautiful voice, but she is a true artist who uses her instrument to its fullest potential to speak to our hearts. The music and lyrics are pure poetry. As such, makes no literal sense but makes TOTAL sense emotionally. It speaks to how we often give give up personal power In relationships, the role of surrender in love and passion and how most of us are ill equipped to be in wholesome partnership with another, but still... have an aching longing for connection. The song, the performance... it’s a true masterpiece.

Oh my, Fil, where do you start? kd lang's voice is amazing no matter what she sings. I'm a huge fan of kd of both her beautiful voice and honest stage presence - what we see is who she is. She held that last, sweet hallelujah so effortless, it feels like she could have gone on even longer. Thank you

When Lang ran up to the stage in that wedding dress at the 1985 Junos and said that she wore it because it was the only time she'd get to wear one, 20 years before Canada legalized gay marriage, I never understood how people didn't understand that was her coming out. She is a remarkable woman in so many ways.

KD'S version of this song is heaven sent. I love that she is barefoot it makes me feel in order for her to give full spiritual expression to this song- she grounds her delivery barefooted.❤👃

k d lang's version remains my all-time favorite. Pentatonix gets more raves, but they didn't get the emotion into the song that lang did. And you're right about the 'cry' in her voice, which is why she does so very well with Roy Orbison in both duets and as covers. This was just an amazing performance. I do wonder why people keep thinking this a religious song.

Her version is my ultimate favorite version. I always compare any other cover to this and they always come up short - so far. There was an artist on RU-vid and in the description it said it would make me cry. It was lovely but, nope no tears. K.D.s version always makes me cry… sensory overload! BTW when you were playing it, I KNEW you would mention the vibrato in a certain spot. You did! See, I’m learning!

Pleased you did k.d. Lang, Fil. She really is a national treasure. Have you noticed that she moderates the power of her voice when singing with others, e,g, Elton John? She also adapts to the venue and audience, She did Hallelujah at the opening of the 2010 Olympics and held 50 odd thousand in the stadium so spellbound one could almost hear a pin drop(Vancouverite here). I prefer the more intimate settings but this was a good performance. Not too shabby for a gay vegetarian girl from cattle country. Enjoyed your analysis as always.

What great insight, highlighting each Hallelujah as a step in an emotional journey through musical technique. The song itself lends itself for a catharsis but to have it timed in this way, it's like watching a theater piece. That last note washes everything away. Superb insights Phil, thank you.

Might be your best analysis, Fil, though they're all mighty good. For what it's worth, I think this is by far the best cover of Hallelujah. I loved Cohen's own rendition though obviously they can't really be compared. Unpopular opinion here... I don't like Jeff Buckley's version very much at all, certainly not when we have k.d. lang's to enjoy.

Neil Young was supposed to host this awards ceremony but unfortunately had his brain injury just prior to it. k.d Lang stepped up to replace him and started the show with a terrific cover of Helpless as a tribute to him. If you could, you should analyze that performance as well.

For me, there are three aspects to a musical recording to consider: 1) the songwriting 2) the technical performance and 3) the magic. Clearly, the songwriting is stellar, thanks to Leonard Cohen. The technical performance is amazing as Fil has explained. But the magic? You can't analyze this or quantify it and there is really no need to do so. Just stand back and let it be.

This particular performance by K. D. Lang (the acoustics) really highlighted her tremendous, angelic voice. THIS is how Leonard Cohen thought his song should be sung. I found out he was at a performance where K. D. Lang sang this song & he smiled all the way through her rendition. They are two of Canada's greatest contributions to the music world! FYI- Cohen said he actually wrote about 80 different stanzas for this song. He is the only person who sang an alternative stanza in the song.

She is so amazing. I learned something new from you- I never heard of the "cry" technique before. I also love how she almost yodels when she flips into her head voice sometimes. It's so hard to do that well and she does it effortlessly. A good example is when she sings Full Moon of Love. I think everyone jumped on the Hallelujah bandwagon after they heard Jeff Buckley sing it, because he mastered it and made it amazing. I am actually sick of this song but there are still two versions I love. Jeff Buckley and this one, by k.d. lang. Great video. Thanks, Fil! I would love to see you do an analysis of some Jeff Buckley!

"Hallelujah" is K.d. Lang's, as 1965 performance of "Unchained Melody" is Bobby Hatfield's, as "Over the Rainbow" is Judy Garland's , as Disturb's new version of "Sound of Silence" is David Draimen's; such amazing voices. I also love K.d. Lang's duets with other singers. Love, love her!
