Little Richard probably gives the best interviews of any of the first generation of rock legends. I always loved his description of Hendrix's playing: "It made my big toe shoot up in my boot."

@@KatieReadsKoziesAndMore Richard says it in the 1973 documentary film "Jimi Hendrix", but I think he may have also said it in other interviews. Richard has great comments about various stuff in the Chuck Berry documentary/concert film, "Hail, Hail, Rock'n'Roll".

I saw Little Richard live somewhere around 2005. Great show, great showmanship. After the show, Little Richard signed posters and cd's in the lobby. He was sweating profusely and it was running down the sides of his face. I purchased a poster and as he was signing my poster, a drop of sweat landed on the poster....😂😂😂....Now, I have Little Richard's DNA & signature on my poster for eternity.... 🤣🤣🤣.

He was one of the few who actually COULD bring his fans to their feet at a time when it was frowned on. How could you not? He was dancing as he played and all the fans just wanted to dance with him! His life has definitely had it's ups and downs but to me, he has always been a class act. Not having been around or old enough to even listen to rock until late 79-80 ( my background before then , as a child, was Classical, Country and Christian music, the 3 C's) I learned about all of these as oldies. I wish I'd been around when these people were just coming on the scene. I didn't even know who Elvis was! I learn SO MUCH from all of the videos you make! Thank you!

He was a Seventh Day Adventist. In the 50's/60's we would always ask to sing Joy, Joy Joy in Sabbath school class. We would sing it like Little Richard, but after awhile the teachers figured out what was going on and that song was prohibited. He was a real scandal to the elders, but the young people loved him.

You hit the nail on the head in your description of Little Richard's "bringing people together" and "stealing the show." The video also was a wonderful example of this. Incidently, my mother and I saw Little Richard(with Chuck Berry)in concert in 2002. Not only did he bring people together when they came up on stage to dance, they were literally worn out after his performance! You'd mentioned about Little Richard's working as a dishwasher before his career took off--at the concert, he mentioned about the experience that led to his famous "A wop bop a lu bop a wop bam boom" line in "Tutti Frutti." Fil, this was another great analysis video about one of rock n' roll's pioneers.

Little Richard is on record thanking God for ELVIS.he got R&R off the ground in many respects.and I hope Mr. Penniman got something from the covers EP did, but I doubt it. he was screwed by no talent bumbs. hell, even ELVIS didn't get what he was worth. Col. Tom Parker got at least half. but LR wrote songs, which had the potential to make him richer than ELVIS, who was a singer. royalties and songwriting credits are the way to make money on records. but if he asked for money he was called a ''troublemaker''.

You could tell that Tom was very in touch with his guest, and listening to your analyses of Little Richard and Jerry Lee telling us that they were hugely popular in Britain, I figure that is where and when Tom fell for black music and why he felt compelled to honor them like he did...

I was just watching this performance a couple of weeks ago and I wondered if Fil would analyze it. Little Richards didn't just perform well, he established a connection with his audience and uplifted them. I would bet that the people who were at this show didn't feel they were just watching Little Richard perform, they probably felt they were almost a part of the show themselves.

My parents were rock and roll fans. The radio was always set to this music. I grew from a baby hearing Sam Cooke, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and so many more, in my home. My mom said the first time she saw Elvis on the Ed Sullivan Show, I had just started to walk and she picked me up because I was blocking the television screen and she wanted to see this wild white boy sing and dance. She was born and raised in Southern Kentucky. She and her childhood friends would skip going to the white church on Sunday so they could stand outside the black church and listen to the gospel singing. Music was the great equalizer. These talented men kept performing in concerts as long as they were physically able to climb on stage. Likewise, we now have the next generation, who was influenced by these pioneers, still performing tunes inspired by these greats. Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, the Stones, Moody Blues, etc., still play to sell-out crowds. Real musicianship will never go out-of-style! I guarantee, none of the current breed of entertainers have songs that could wake me up with a smile the way Little Richard did!

I had to tighten the screws on my chair after this video. Good social commentary, I grew up when there was real civil unrest. He influenced the Beatles in other ways also since they refused to perform before segregated audiences. I was run out of an Alabama town as a teenager in the early 1970's when I called a Black man pumping gasoline "Sir". Two things, yes, someone came out to pump gasoline for you. And in Alabama White people with long hair weren't looked on well either. That was great that it was Sister Rosetta that gave him his start, she was probably someone that should receive royalties from everyone in the British Invasion. I think her concert in Manchester Railroad Station was pivotal. I think you should cover War Pigs. The comments section is very timely.

Dad was in the audience the night he decided that rock and roll was evil (due to seeing Sputnik) and came on in reverends robes and read the bible and lectured the audience on the devil in rock and roll. Dad and his mates (and the crowd) initially cheered and thought it was all a part of the show but soon realised he was serious. He did sing some songs but Dad said it was mostly gospel. It was around this time he lobbed his jewellery in a river as the car crossed over a bridge :)

Little Richard was a unique, original rock and roll maker. Paul McCartney learned a lot of techniques from Richard. "Energy galore" was a new method to get the audience involved! And, The Beatles recognized the power of screaming singing. Paul's cover of "Long Tall Sally" is brilliant and as energetic as Richard. Funny story, when the Beatles met Richard in his dressing room John took a piece fried chicken off Richard's dinner plate and ate it. There's an interview somewhere where Richard really bitches about that. It's really funny.

I really enjoy when you take a look at early artists that were an influence on artists that came along later. The thing I find fascinating is that those later artists influenced the next generation. Your carl perkins vid the other night was an amazing example with george harrison's unabashed hero worship look on his face. No need to explain george's/the beatles influence. You mentioned the influence of the gospel choir on little richard. So often, you can tell when black female singers have been choir singers. They belt out their songs with such confidence and they improvise alot with the music/lyrics just like those beautiful gospel choirs do.

The RU-vid video of Little Richard doing "Long Tall Sally" in the movie, "Don't Knock The Rock" in 1956 really shows him in his original style. You get to see a great band, the Upsetters, backing him up as well. Back then the piano players like Little Richard, Fats Domino, and Jerry Lee Lewis all had very distinctive styles, kind of like the cars of that era.

He was flamboyant before Elton John, etc.. He was such a great peformer even into his later years. And, of course so much fun.

Nice find! He sounds like he’s been wailing a while in the show n his voice is tired out as it would b at the end of such a vocal exertion! He was an amazing vocal performer!! There are some tracks where u can here Jimi backing him! Hendrix is quoted saying he wanted to do with a guitar what Richard did with his voice. Best recordings are really on the Specialty label with the Upsetters! Check out little known blues I’m Just a Lonely Guy!! 😉

You just can't deny that face. What a groundbreaker he was. A gay black guy singing nasty ditties but man how he could play and sing. My mom turned me on to him. Love Richard.

Super-interesting to me... I knew almost nothing about him and just enjoyed his songs all these years, now I am even more amazed. A deep down really shallow note: I delighted in hearing that lovely glottal stop "Little" so many times! Thanks for the great look at Little Richard.

Little Richard's voice will always be in my top10 RnR voices of all time... he was exciting and scary at the same time... the ease with which he reached those high notes is unequaled... also one of the first flamboyant showmen of the early rock era.. we all wish we could write a foundational, universal song like Long Tall Sally or Tutti Fruiti... that leaves just Jerry Lee standing from the first great wave of RnR... simpler times but great, great emotional exciting life changing music

Richard was working as a dishwasher in a club. The band didn't show so he went on. I guess things worked out. Good Golly Miss Molly

I love synchronicities. I literally just finished watching a movie called Mystery, Alaska where Little Richard sings the National Anthem before a hockey game. Then I jumped to You-Tube and this showed up on my feed. Another good analysis Fil

Love this analysis, Fil. Getting to listen with my brother to Little Richard on Christmas Eve was a clever ruse for my Catholic parents to disguise the logistics of getting me a puppy. Normally there'd be Bing Crosby or Perry Como. Great night all around at 12 yrs old.

Good morning first of all Fil ,its 4:47am NY time excellent as usual about this brilliant as well flamboyant artist Mr. Little Richard, and his impact on society cultural the whole darn state of mind then.....; Consequently I was not going to comment today but next week in live Tuesday stream night, although I am behind on things I wanted to quickly weigh in with my comment. When I saw the comment of Mr. Charles Ross respectfully requesting you to do an analysis on Mr. James Brown, so I had to simply jump in with my 2 cents. A lot has happened to me, since my mother passed, so I hope I am accurate in remembering what Rev. Al Sharpton stated about his admiration for Mr. James Brown's genius, that Mr. Brown put a specific beat in a musical composition when he sang, dance and played and he should be credited for that. It's true I will review a video when I am able about the exact Rev. Sharpton quote. James Brown, my mother and I noticed and she explained to me that his step and movement was in sync in harmony to the musical instruments, in other words he knew if the drummer missed a beat or out of tune by his foot work and as he sang he glared back at the drummer quick which it made an impact. Same was true for the wind section trumpets and the string instruments. Mr. Brown was methodical in every beat and step had to be absolutely in perfection. That's where Mr Michael Jackson got that influence of being one with the music and listen to every note and beat and of course dance and showmanship. Further, Mr. Michael Jackson when he brought the Beattle publishing catalog it was not just The Beatles Catalog it had, Mr. Little Richard music, in which Mr. Richard pontificate for years how he never got his due and credit for Rock and Roll. Well, I believe it quell when Jackson gave back correctly to dissolve some of wrongful act not only to little Richard but other artist who were scammed in the dopwop era of 1950s and 1960s when record labels sort called went belly up bankrupt. So Michael gave little Richard monetary value as well Sly Stone of the group sly and the Family Stones etc. That's my point there Fil and, the 3 major Titians: Sam Cooke, James Brown and finally Mr. Little Richard great African American artist who changed the way music played displayed next generation of artist white or black British or American, dance and sung. These people especially James Brown influence Prince and Michael Jackson. There is no color barrier to pure music. This was my mother's generation and she loved especially Mr. Richard mainly because of the gospel background like her in which I told you already Fil. My mother told me a secret to demonstrate how much of an genius little Richard was in all ways, in how he survived such challenges in his life. Richard dressed in drag, since you see Fil he was extremely handsome Black man, of course taboo white women just was wild about him, so my mother stated he dressed to avoid be physically threat or lynch by sick racist who could not stand a beautiful black man like this back then because this was common placed. I guess my mother's opinion had some veracity. Anyway, you was accurate in assessment of Mr Richard's career I enjoyed the analysis this morning, thank you for being thoughtful and respectful Fil. I always loved Mr. Richard especially when his voice goes high register and I smile. Have a good weekend.

Another great one has entered into the "Rock and Roll Heaven" and the hell of a band that the Righteous Brothers sang about. My question - Do you think Little Richard is resting peacefully or do you think he is jamming in his relentless style, adding a few of his iconic screams in for glory?

Like Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard were seminal artists in the early days of 12 rock 'n' roll.....I defy anyone not to tap their feet when these two are playing that genre (though Jerry Lee also performed country and western)....just great, simple 12 bar music that is still relevant today.....nice to hear you recognise the contribution that Richard made to the Beatles and lovely to hear you mention Sister Rosetta Tharpe ! Nice one Fil.
