British guitarist analyses Peter Frampton's lead work live in 1975! 

Frampton was so underrated. Marketing him as a teen dream/pin up boy just destroyed his reputation as a brilliant guitarist. I was really young when Frampton Comes Alive came out and my bestie was obsessed with him. We spent hours listening to Alive and then bought all his studio albums....still 40 years on, I find his music and his voice to be sublime and his guitar playing so clean...it just shimmers. I saw his last tour and he is still just brilliant.

I remember when "Frampton Comes Alive" was released. It was a BIG DEAL. Studio quality sound on a live album. Killer guitar work. Tight band. It's still on my phone's SD card, 43 years later

The summer of "Frampton Comes Alive" was incredible. Everywhere you went, this album was playing. At every beach. Every party. Every park. Graduation celebrations. Blasting out of cars with their windows down. That summer I clearly remember sitting on the roof of my house, catching some rays, blasting this album. And not one neighbor complained!😎

The 70's were wonderful....I remember watching The Midnight Special every week and driving around in my red Chevelle with the windows rolled down while Frampton blasted on my 8 track. Those were the days. Frampton was great, still is, but the attention was on his appearance and it over shadowed his skill. I loved his hair! Thanks to his buddy David Bowie for helping pull him around. Also gotta give a big thanks to Bob Mayo for adding perfect back up. Thanks for sharing.

I saw Peter live here in Chicago, Illinois last july on his farewell tour at a huge outdoor arena I can tell you this, he hasn't lost a thing. His soloing, dynamics, chord inversions, vocals were all there. He did all his classics and even some blues which blew me away. His encore song was 'Do You Feel (Like I do)'. He must have done 7 or 8 minutes on the talk box alone on that song. The crowd went wild, people were dancing in the aisles and it brought me back to the glorious mid 70's. His opening act was Jason Bonham & The Led Zeppelin Experience. Talk about a real good show - Zeppelin & Frampton. Doesn't get any better!

I'm proud to say I sat in the 8th row of MSG for a show from that Frampton album tour. It would be a great show for anyone to see but as a 16 yr old it was the greatest thing I ever saw

The "Midnight Special" was treat each and every week. Peter Frampton is a much underrated guitarist, highly skilled in acoustic work as well as electric lead stuff. His period with Humble Pie consists of an aggressive and heavy blues based guitar sound; lest we forget about his vocals which are exemplary. Great player. As usual, a fun and interesting post!

His duels with Steve Marriot on Live at the Filmore were unbelievable with Walk on Gilded Splinters being my alltime favourite music.

I remember watching this as a 13 year old learning guitar, and i was floored! PF tone, phrasing and use of pedals and talk box were so on point! Frampton is probably the prime example of how being promoted and thought of as a teen idol can totally overtake and make people not focus on ability! PF was and still is a master player who NEVER received his due as one of the best of his generation! Another spot on review and analysis!

That guitar was burned in a plane crash and re-united to him 30 years later. He left all the burn marks and plays it again today.

I can remember waiting all week for the Midnight Special show. No computers back then for instant gratification. We had to wait, and the wait was worth it! There were great performances like this every week. What an awesome time it was!👍😎🎸🎶

Bought this album brand new when it came out, freaked out when I heard that “squawk box” talking! Played it till the needle went through the grooves! Still get the shivers when he gets through the use of that “new” technology for the day and launches into the big finish.

You young uns' have no idea how big Frampton was in the mid 70's. He sold out major stadiums 5-6-7 nights a week for years straight. Something nobody today could possibly do.

Saw him a few years ago at the Pony outdoor stage and he could still bring it big time. Full of energy and the playing and vocal were 'spot on' all these years later.

Another master! Peter can shred and has so many hits, one of the best! Frampton comes alive!! That album alone puts him easily in the top 25 guitarist of all time!!! Simply Extraordinary and he did session work for many bands that wanted his Soul on thier album!!! Rock!!!

Yeah, that song was played to absolute death on the radio. But it was so magical with that talk box stuff. His choice of notes with that little hint of jazz in there at times. That live recording on Frampton Comes Alive is just amazing. He plays it pretty much the same but a little different in the solo sections. I got my fil of Fil now. HEHEHHE off to beddie bye.

I saw Peter support Deep Purple and he played 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' as a tribute to George Harrison, and his solo during that song is still the best I have ever witnessed at a gig, it was breathtaking.

Frampton was beyond good and he still is. I worked in the music dept. of a Zeller's and there was a huge poster of him above. What a cutie!!! It was the early 70's and I was 16!

Saw Frampton play live about 6,7 years back performing at our Erie County fair. It was an absolute beast of a day-- stifling hot and airless, gray and moist and stuffy with intermittent drizzle, and they were playing on an outdoor stage setup that must have blocked the occasional meager breeze off from their backs. Horrible situation for anyone, but you'd never have known it from the band's enthusiasm--- they performed like it was their favorite gig, doing old faves and new jazzy tracks, and were obviously enjoying themselves like crazy. They played longer than they had to, Frampton was amazing, and this song lasted, I think, about 20 minutes and never lost our interest. I wouldn't hesitate to see him again, given the chance. The band was tight; the direction, blissfully loose.

I was in high school at the time. True guitarists (and musicians) always appreciated his guitar playing, regardless of all the other stuff going on with him and his career. It's nice to see him get the appreciation he deserves.

Peter said his career harmonically changed when he converted to the 3 humbucker Les Paul tone (a 1954 LP Custom modified). Peter pretty much was the pioneer of the 3 humbucker LP with a more diverse wiring scheme that gave him more flexibility. He had a master volume and tone for the Bridge and the neck together and then a master volume and tone for the middle pickup. Whereas stock Gibson wiring scheme had that middle humbucker was "live" all the time variable to the volume control. Peter's rerouted wiring scheme: Position 1 Option: Bridge with the alternative to blend in the middle or null. Position 2 Option: Bridge and Neck with the alternative to blend in the middle or null . Position 3 Option: Neck with the alternative to blend in the middle or null.

Such a stellar album. The harmony, the melody, the dedication to the live expression is fantastic. TY Fil for loving music and being a great performer and so totally educated about it all as well. Great video! 🤟

OMG another brilliant performance by Peter Frampton!! Fil, you'd love his newly released memoir Do You Feel Like I Do? Sadly, due to his degenerative illness which atrophies the muscles in his legs, arms and fingers, his playing days are numbered. Always remembered and treasured for the icon he is.❤️🙏

I had a massive poster of Frampton on my wall as a kid, his shirt off, guitar on and wild smile drawing you in...of course, there was much discussion amongst my friends about his daring lilac satin trousers and incredible wavy hair ..but nothing spelled ROCK at a concert like listening to Do You Feel Like We Do? It immediately put you in a certain frame of mind and we all knew we'd be in for a good night. Rock on Peter!

My generation, some of the best bands and talent circa 60’s and 70’s. Loved the album Frampton Comes Alive, it was a must in every album collection in 1976.

He was here once some years ago, didn´t sing but people next to him surely told him about that song and other like Show me the way and I´m in you. The Midnight Special was such a great way to see artists on TV every Friday night back in the day. The artists weren't always my taste, but overall outstanding show. Enjoyed In Concert and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert too, they were the same concept but more rock and roll! 🤘🏻

He is so good! I've been going to his concerts for years. Every time he comes to my area. His voice is fantastic and even with his chronic health problems, his playing is superb! Like fine wine, he has gotten better with age. (if possible, since he's always been fantastic)

I'm sure i watched this when it originally aired. The Midnight Special was a must see every Friday night. All the top bands of the 70's performed their current and past hits absolutely live, exactly how they wanted to do them. At school everyone would be talking about who was going to be on that night. I wish this form would come back, but sadly it seems unlikely to ever happen again.

Even back in his Humble Pie days...he's was genius! Personally I never considered him Pop music, everyone is different. He played his Tulsa July '76 heading up Santana & Gary Wright. Peter came out & sweated along w/ the rest of us, all we do was have fun & enjoy this new kid on the block. I caught him up in Arkansas in '75, couldn't get enough of Peter having followed Humble Pie. Whew, what a great review, GREAT hearing it from a great guitarist!

Love Frampton...and I believe most of the US fans were going to see his guitar playing (and the females were there for his looks too! 😉). I saw him down here in Florida in the 70s at what were called "Superbowls" because they were held in football stadiums & you had a lineup of THE most amazing bands on one ticket (I was very young, but had a brother who was 6 years older & he took his 8,9,10 year old little sister with him...those are memories that I will always cherish because I got to experience those bands & I was with my big brother who passed away in February about 30 minutes after I'd been there to see him. And he fought hard to stay because I've been fighting throat cancer the last 2 years & he so wanted to be here for me...sorry, guess that was TMI, just trying to explain why I treasure those times so much) and Frampton was great! But I did hear there was a concert maybe in the mid-west where Skynyrd went on first, and that Skynyrd blew him off the stage & the fans weren't happy. I'll have to see if I can track down what concert it was & the comments about it. And these were Frampton fans, who had gone to see him not Skynyrd, saying this. They said at least half the people left. Don't quote me on this...like I said, I'll try to track that info down. And everyone don't shoot me for mentioning Skynyrd a lot...they're my fav, so I'm unashamedly biased! 🤣

Peter Frampton shot to stardom so fast it made the rock world's head spin.

I've always believed that Peter's brilliant guitar work influenced Angus Young, and in this video, I believe it is obvious. Frampton's live work showcases his mastery of improvisation and the combination of solid lead and rythem licks that lays a foundation to allow him perform at the highest level, making each show unique.

It's amazing how great guitarists sound so unique despite using the same chords and scales as the rest of us.

Sat in a bar, got drunk, listening to the entire album, end to end, in San Francisco in 1975...one of the best experiences I had in San Francisco...Remember it as if it happened yesterday

Brilliant as always Fil, and I learnt a new word "extemporaneous", thank you! As a matter of interest, I wonder how much of what you cover is from each different decade? My music is 70's and seems a lot of what you cover is also 70's. As a follow up to your Greta Van Fleet video of a month or so ago, my 15 year old daughter introduced me to them. I like them. I introduced her to Led Zeppelin and she has become a total fan and listens to nothing else now! In my post a month ago I wondered about the shelf life of Greta, if my daughter is anything to go by...not long.

The Midnight Special is a Gold mine of bands in the 70's. Along with Don Kershner's Rock Concert and Soul Train. Prior to Music Videos. As a teen. This was Heaven. On Monday morning at school. Everybody was Did you see Frampton or Cheep Trick on tv ?. Fil this was when these guys were at the top of their Drug induced alcohol fueled best. I know you do mostly Guitar analysis. But can do a video of a great performer ?. Please do The Killer, Jerry Lee Lewis. Rock on !.

2022: Beautiful. Peter has always been Wonderful. Great guitar work and vocals. Great Band tooo. Good mix by the network. I watched Midnight Special every week. Also, love the "Acoustic" bass amp. One of the best ever made with an 18" speaker. They made great amps. Thanks for this excellent review, as always.

Over the years I have attended several of jazz guitarist and vocalist John Pizzarelli performances (I just saw him a couple of months ago with Ramsey Lewis). John tells the story that when he was in high school, he was in his bedroom learning some of the lead parts from "Frampton Comes Alive" when his father, the legendary jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, stuck his head in the door and said, "if you can play that, you can play jazz!"

thank you for this Fil. The Midnight Special was a godsend back in the day (as was Don Kirshner's Rock Concert). When you lived in a rural area of Australia and could not often see the bands (that really never toured here often enough anyway). That being said, this song and the album it came from "Frampton Comes Alive", is not just an pop album to me. I agree with you that he is so much more than a pop star. For people of my age, this song, album and artist it is a part of the fabric of our lives. This was played often and everywhere. Thank you so much for the analysis of his playing style. You are putting the correct terms in the places where our discussions of the music we listened to back as young teens which was (and probably still is) severely lacking. I was to young to watch The Midnight Special, but in the last cpl of yrs I have picked up 2 DVD sets of the show & wish that I had been able to watch it when it aired. As far as I can tell Peter used the talk box more than any other artist.

Hi Fil, I just caught up to your wonderful analysis of Peter Frampton who was on a whole other level when it came to his musicianship. Despite my being a musician, thanks to you, I learned what a talk box is. I loved the way you described the various techniques Peter applied to his playing. I could see how you were into this as you were moving to the beat and had that child during Christmas smile on your face. Thanks for teaching and reminding me, Fil. And keep smiling!

I had the pleasure of seeing Peter play in Detroit during his 1976 tour. Great, unforgettable concert. He truly gave it his all. I continued following him for many years and had numerous albums. I learned many of his songs on my acoustic - he was a real inspiration. But as with many things in life, he fell by the wayside for me, which I now realize was such as shame, because I now know and appreciate the full scale of his talent. He played with George Harrison, toured with David Bowie and the lead guitarist, etc. If you haven't heard Float by Peter and Gordon Kennedy, give it a listen. Incredibly beautiful instrumental. I'm picking up my guitar after a long abstinence and one of the first songs I want to play is Winds of Change. There's a cute story behind that one. Once when he was visiting George Harrison, he was picking up guitars from his wall, and when he was playing a particular acoustic, he asked George, "What IS THIS?" George replied that that was one of his special tunings. "Don't steal it!" When Peter tells the story, he laughs and says, "Well I went home and stole the tuning and that's when I wrote, Winds of Change." Always one of my favorites.

Peter never plays the same solo, he is creative and incredibly musical, somehow I never begrudged him his great success.
