I've said it before: There's so much heavy talent in this video that it's a wonder the stage didn't collapse. And the song is as gorgeous and moving now as it was like 50 yrs ago.

Great artists don't step on each other - they become one. Winwood and Clapton played on the original version of the song when they were both with Blind Faith. The little smiles they give each other tell the story.

My favorite song from Blind Faith only album. Remember it from childhood. Play drums on it every band I was ever in. Steve Winwood is underrated as the guitarist only because he so excellent on vocals and keyboards. The section where Eric was staring at Steve’s left hand so he could match what he was playing in a supportive way brought tears to my eyes.. thanks Phil another great choice

Steve Winwood, one of the geniuses of my generation, well, yah, ignoring Higher Love. Never hear his name mentioned with greats from the 60s and 70s but he sure as shit belongs. This is a killer song. These players make it even better. This performance had more feeling than the Blind Faith original. A beautiful performance. Thanks for sharing.

I was at one of the legendary Beacon ABB concerts their last year there in 2014. Pre-purchased CDs of concert. Was near the end of line after concert when they RAN OUT of CDs -- 4 or 5 of us waiting. They said it would take another half hour or so and apologized. The few of us there waiting were visiting about how GREAT the concert was when one burst out, "Derek Trucks!" From behind me he walked up and shook all our hands personally apologizing for our wait and thanking us for coming out. Oh, and his hand's grip was SO STRONG. Called back home and told my wife I was never washing that hand ever again! ;) So, INDEED, "Derek Trucks ....one of the most humble, engaging ....jst the nicest guy you'll ever meet ....".

Nice to hear you talking about the music and this time no dazzling guitar wizardry. So important to have a good song before you can play great solo's. For me Steve is one of the greatest songwriters of British rockmusic. As soon he joined the Spencer Davis group at the age of 15 they had 3 masssive hits and instead of going for more succes he started Traffic to find new directions. Mith Mitchell said in an interview; "we as Jimi's band would have played with Steve anytime and anywhere". That says it all I think. He played besides the hammond also sologuitar at livegigs with Traffic in the early seventies.

I think it IS dazzling guitar wizardry to play softly with such a feel for the music and such finesse ! I know what you mean in your comment , but this talent level is more rare and harder to find than it is to find someone who can rip out a bunch of notes.

Went to Clapton concert in St. Louis when Trucks toured with him (2007?) with VIP pass. Promoter walked up and we chatted for a moment. I told him I was looking forward to watching and hearing one of the world's greatest guitarists. He said, "Yeah, Clapton is great!" I responded, "I was talking about Derek Trucks!" You should have seen his eyes bulge. I thought his head was going to spin around like Linda Blair in The Exorcist. LOL ... Oh, and I wasn't kidding, either. I went to that concert because it was my first opportunity to see Derek Trucks in person!!!

I have this on DVD. It is for a great cause. Eric Clapton's rehab center in Antigua. A stellar lineup of musicians. I saw Eric Clapton once live, I saw Derek Trucks twice live, with the TTB and I saw Steve Winwood twice live, when he was opening up for Tom Petty. Great version of the Blind Faith tune, that Steve Winwood wrote. Many think of Steve Winwood as a keyboard player. He is a great guitarist and plays many other instruments. He is a great singer too, and also a great producer. Arc Of A Diver had Steve Winwood write all the songs, play all the instruments and he produced the album. That's how great Steve Winwood is. Thanks for this analysis. Cheers Fil!

The unknown of music, combine a classic song, major gifted talent, great live mix and that total element, when the sound takes on a life of its own. On the video you see it at the end, when Winwood gives each side that look. They all knew, smiles, and no words needed.

The supergroup Blind Faith (Eric Clapton, formerly from Cream, as guitarist: Steve Winwood, formerly from Traffic, as organist and singer; Ginger Baker, formerly from Cream, as drummer; and an excellent bassist/violinist) had a short U.S. tour (14 concerts or so) in July and August of 1969, and my then-17-year-old brother and my then-almost-14-year-old self were fortunate to win tickets to see Blind Faith from a radio contest held by the FM-100 rock radio station in our hometown of Memphis - the tickets were to the tour stop which was geographically "closest" to Memphis, which was the Sunday August 3, 1969 concert at Kiel Auditorium, in St. Louis. My brother and I flew up from Memphis on Delta Airlines, saw a (then-brand-new, premiering) film "2001: A Space Odyssey" in the afternoon, saw the wonderful Blind Faith concert at Kiel, that evening; however, it had some unexpectedly lengthy encores; this caused us to miss our late-night ticketed Delta return flight to Memphis. We tried to hitch-hike (as was mostly quite safe and quite customary, in those years) on the nearby I-55 expressway for a ride to the airport in St. Louis, to call our parents and ask them to wire funds for a new return-flight airline ticket; however, co-incidentally, a trucker who gave us a ride was going not to or near that airport, but was going straight through (in the wee hours of the morning of Monday the 4th) to a truck stop in West Memphis, Arkansas, before heading on I-40 south to Little Rock in Arkansas; of course, from our perspectives, it was a thousand times better and cheaper to do this, than to have gone to the St. Louis airport. We could then call our parents in Memphis from the truck stop in West Memphis, and explain the situation (there were no cellphones back then which would have allowed for an earlier call), and they were so delighted that we were both still alive and well that my father (a self-employed artist) left his office and picked us both us from the truck stop in West Memphis -- with NO questions asked !!!!! GREAT Memories -- except for the worries of my parents !!!!!

Excellent commentary Fil! Steve Winwood is an incredible musician. I've been a fan since '66. The sound of that Hammond B-3 played through a Leslie on 'Gimme Some Lovin' was incredible. It's too bad that the Leslie isn't used as much as in the past. I suppose the Uni-Vibe phase shifter had a lot to do with that. Winwood was heavily influenced by the great Ray Charles.

Right on Fil! One of the first things I learned about music is if you want to be a great musician you not only shine on a lead but you also shine as an accompanist. Which means you are not adding less to the music but you are adding more by supporting whomever is on lead with the "right" notes at the right time etc. and therefore never stepping on or into the lead's territory. Rather you are enabling him to also shine by adding just the right touch of "flavor" to not only what the lead is playing, but to the song itself. Also very super important, and I'm in complete agreement with you, is playing for the sake of the music itself only! This is the difference between a musician and an outstanding musician!! I've seen enough over the years to notice that musicians (and bands) that play for any other reasons (imho) do not stand out as a wonderful or innovative musicians, and as for bands, they do not stay together very long. Conflicts always arise within the band.

+Gerry K It's easy to criticize pop music of today. Most of it has become slave to the almighty $$$. But there is still a lot of talent out there, young talent, to boot. You just have to find it! It's not often on mainstream sources. Satellite and HD radio, word of mouth through young people, especially, and your own curiosity yields a surprising amount of good and sometimes great music. No, it's not "The Old Days," (and I'm one of those old guys) but it's out there. Young musicians don't have as many oppor- tunities as they use to, but the internet - youtube and all - gives everyone the door to exposure for their creativity. Often, a walk or short ride to your local live music venues will make you hopeful for the future of creative music. Just my opinion.

Ok, I have to analyze Phil at this point. I just started watching his analysis videos about 3 weeks ago, and I gotta say something here. Phil, your analysis of this particular performance is a shining representative example of all your analysis of so many musical performances across a multitude of genres. You don’t miss a beat. You know exactly where, why, when and how to drill down into each performance no matter the performance. Your knowledge, breadth and depth, of music is downright staggering. Your interest, love and respect for this art form we call music is written all over each analysis video you make. I find your analysis to be thoroughly unannoying (it’s a new word) which I cannot assign to any others that attempt to analyze various musical performances. You have this way of capturing the mood....the attitude...the setting of the performance, the time period at which the original track was recorded. Your analysis are often backed with an historical knowledge as pertaining to the music your analyzing. You have depth. A rarity these days amongst today’s musicians imo. You truly appreciate well crafted music, outlays of legitimate talent, music backed by meaning, skill and melody instead of gimmickry, ego, one-upmanship, and fads. You are a natural throwback to a time where absolutely phenomenal musical talent was ubiquitous, unlike today. You sir must also, by default, be one hell of a guitar teacher. I only hope your students fully value everything you are teaching them. The world needs far better musicians. Musicians that eschew the one-dimensional approach to musical creativity. Music, actually ART, was never meant to be one-dimensional. Any fool kind draw a line. You grasp the value of the presence of soul and artistry in a musical performance far better than most, You naturally pick up on how a song is nuanced, however subtle it is and yes even if it’s the exact opposite of subtle. God Bless your efforts and pursuits regarding music Phil. Respectfully Great Job Phil !

We may not neccessary think of Steve Winwood as a guitarist...but he's got chops man. He started as the creative genius of the Spencer Davis Group...at 16 years old. And Derek...well, he had to replace Duane Allman as a 16 year old kid....nuff said. Both those guys had to fill some pretty big shoes.

When Duane died, Derek wasn't even born. So the term "replace" is definetely wrong.

@@Bear78420 According to Steve Winwood he burst into prominence in 1963 at the age of 15 with the Spencer Davis Group. The band enjoyed a string of chart-topping hits by way of such enduring classics as “Gimme Some Lovin'”, “I'm A Man”, and “Keep On Running”.

Clapton called 16 year old Neil Schon to replace Duane. But Carlos Santana had already called Neil 3 weeks earlier.

What a great song and excellent analysis as usual. Absolute legends on stage together. I was pleasantly surprised one evening to be flipping channels and caught the 2010 Crossroads Guitar Festival. Eric and Steve teamed up in Dear Mr. Fantasy, absolutely amazing, my favorite version of that tune.

I love this elegant song! It's wonderful to hear a big gang of talent sound like a band that's been together for years. This has been a favorite video for awhile, it's so interesting to hear the breakdown of what makes it SO wonderful.

Just showed this to my paralyzed (quadriplegic) musician friend. He love Blind Faith and used to sing this song while either playing lead guitar os playing drums. He was so happy to see this. ❤🎸🥁😇

I was in the audience for this show. The tickets were a birthday gift from my sister. It was a great day and night in Chicago that day. It was perfect!

This has been my long-time favourite live version of Blind Faith's gem that many people don't know about, thanks for covering it, Fil (even though I'm few years late since the upload)! Top job as always, your videos are very enjoyable and educational.

I had the pleasure of seeing Steve Winwood live back in the late 80's early 90,s ? In Seattle Washington. Great show. He played songs from Blind faith, traffic, Spencer Davis and from his most recent records: Back in the High Life: such a great musician ,singer and songwriter 👍😎

That was so “comfortable” to the ear, so well blended (where no one stood out from the rest). Only Legends like these guys could deliver such quality. It makes me proud to have been brought up in this music....Thanks to the fifth formers at my old boarding school!!
