When Aretha died, Carole appeared on MSNBC to talk about her. She mentioned this performance, and said that Aretha had stopped playing the piano in public years earlier. When she sat down and started playing, Carole understood what a special tribute this was. It was the artist paying tribute to the songwriter. The Kennedy Center Honors have resulted in several amazing performances over the years.
@@popland1977 Because she was told that if she wanted to be a star, all the attention should be on her as the singer, which isn't necessarily untrue. It's hard to put the spotlight on a singer who's behind the piano.
@@CabinFever52 Different culture and environment. And lastly, since Aretha was born during segregation and had to deal with the aftermath of that, they had to build her profile different. Also a very different type of singer. Elton is a pop singer. His product is what sold and how he profiled himself first. For Franklin it was the show of her skill live. People came to see Elton John because of his music they came to see Aretha because of her singing.
This is one of the greatest live performances ever filmed. Aretha knows that she has little in the tank due to age and illness but she brings everything to this. The recipe.. a touch of soul, a sprig of diva and a bottomless pot of talent! For young performers who are stuck with the humdrum of todays artists....watch and learn how it should be done...by the greatest...Aretha!
Aretha was 73 years old at the time she did this performance. At that time she was battling pancreatic cancer which we all know at this point took her life in August 2018. But to come out on stage and give this type of performance at that age on top of having major health issues is beyond amazing. But this here is what true Talent is. Not what we see today from these young female singers who come out on stage half naked, lip singing with 25 dances behind them flopping all around on stage.
Simply stellar performance!! There is only one Queen. All hail Queen Aretha!!! One of my favourite songs from the first album I bought as a young teenager - Tapestry by Carole King. It's still beautifully emotive listening 48 years on.
THE QUEEN OF SOUL, MAY SHE R.I.P., WHEN I WAS 15 YEARS OLD, I WENT TO THE CHURCH OF REVEREND FRANKIN, IN DETROIT, JUST TO HEAR THE GOSPEL MUSIC, ARETHA PLAYED THERE ONE DAY, A DAY I WILL NEVER FORGET, COUSIN FIGEL
HELLO FIL. I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT I ENJOY YOUR CONTENT SO MUCH THAT I HAVE ALL MY FAMILY SUBSCRIBED. KEEP ON REPRESENTING MUSIC AND MUCH R-E-S-P-E-C-T. FOREVER MOTOWN!!!!
Aretha is 73 years old here. She was so surly not going to make a mistake. We are so Blessed being here with her at the same time. Thank you for everything you've left us Aretha.
Grateful for these three women: Aretha, Carol, and Michelle. “Oh baby what you done to me.” One of the best lines ever written. Chills. Thank you, Fil. ❤️❤️❤️ 🌟
My soul is wrapped in the warm embrace of Aretha's voice. Fil, this is why I watch your videos night after night. You remind me of things I shouldn't forget. There is beauty beyond compare in this world if you look with your heart. RIP, Aretha, you have all my RESPECT.
What a treasure Aretha Franklin was and still is.I have loved her since I heard her sing this on the radio in 1967!! Her performances were always outstanding. She always gives me goosebumps. Thank you Fil. I enjoyed the finger picking on the guitar so much. Once again you have brought us to the pinnacle of this marvelous Lady's rarified talent.
Outstanding !! See Barak wipe a tear from his eye ? I get it. I was 10 in '67 and had 2 older sisters so a fan of Aretha as a wee lad. Great as this all is, Blues Brother's and she's telling Matt "Guitar" Murphy 'You better think'. Sax player/café mate 'ok, you can go, too'. Priceless
That amazing woman cleaned her own house did her grocery shopping cooked meals for her family and still did this in her gorgeous non pc fur coat. My hero
Aretha Franklin was, from the first time I heard her sing, at the top of my list of favorite singers. Everything she sang, she owned. Rest in Heaven Aretha. Your music will always be with us
@Lebo leigh Leigh A lot of people have big mouths like you Lebo, who just talk all out of the side of their necks, talking loud and saying nothing such as yourself, but Aretha now that's someone when she speaks, people stand up and take notice.
I have loved Aretha for a long time and many times have watched this incredible powerful performance of a song that is an absolute anthem from the Queen of Soul. The energy between her and Carole King is so moving. I did not think that anyone could make me appreciate the glory of this performance any more than I already did but, Fil, you have. The way this song builds is irresistible. Aretha's age adds to the poignancy of the performance, and she marks the crescendo of the song by standing up and removing her fur coat! The crowd response is palpable as they will her to take it to the limit! Which she does!! Fil, I love the breadth of your channel. Keep it coming.
Fil, would you be interested in reviewing Tina Turner's performance of "Whatever you Want" live in Amsterdam in 1996 when she was 57. It's so interesting how she uses her maturer voice. Thanks for what you do. It's inspiring and always gives me a lift :)
Aretha needs no analysis. All you need say is...Aretha. That’s it. Such an incredible talent. I will mourn her loss for a long tine. I’m still mourning Freddie Mercury. And Carole King...another one that can’t be beat. Feel free to “analyze” as many Aretha videos as you like Fil. Carole King too. Could watch them all day long. 💜💜💜
OMG... that was so-crazy-good! I always identified this song with Aretha Franklin. This performance is on a level of professionalism and emotion that reaches into a soul and takes residence. And, of course kudos to King, Geoffen, and Wexler for a song that has transcended decades of popular music and never sounds old ♥️
Ahhhh...Her Highness! So divine, so luscious, what an honor it was to know her music from the early years. I miss her terribly. I'd love to see you present Etta James, another knock-out singer. Maybe "I'd Rather Be Blind." And, a shout-out to the beautiful Obamas!
All of the "Kennedy Center Honors" performances that I've seen over the years by any given artist or artists where excellent like {Heart - Stairway to Heaven} honoring Led Zeppelin, Carole king expressions said it all about Aretha Franklin's performance. would love in the future if You covered Aretha's history and career. thanks for this one Fil.
A world class pianist Aretha rarely played the piano live at this point. Carole was blown away that she chose to do so for 'her' song. As we know, after Carole heard Aretha's version she said it was no longer hers....Aretha owned it!
I so love your passion brother! I look forward to each and every video. Tons and tons of passion to go with a natural love and knowledge for each presentation. Thank you again!
Aretha Franklin - The Queen of Soul. There will never be another. Look at the reaction Aretha gets from Carole King. Priceless! Thanks for another excellent analysis Fil! Your diversity in your choices of music/performances/artists seems boundless. Keep up the good work sir!
She died so soon after this. She must have known that this was probably the last time she would play to such a great audience, and with legendary Carole King alongside. Totally gratifying for us Wingers, and hopefully for Aretha as well. Beautiful lyrics, chords and melody.
Love that Carol King was so excited to hear her sing her song. I love Aretha Franklin! There aren’t many like her! Thank you for analysing her voice. And getting out your guitar!
Wow!!! ...🎤🎤👏👏👌👌👌excellent indeed nothing to add because both Carol and Aretha are great ... Aretha's voice is unique is indeed the Queen ... very good comments on your analysis congratulations⭐🌟⭐🌟♩🎶🎵🎼🌷🌷🌷🎹🎹🎸👍👍🔶🔷🔶🔷💜💜💜
@@mevrammcoyoteV8f150 Hi Mark! She sure does...you could do a whole big list of "Songs You Didn't Kow Carole King Wrote"...Up on the Roof, (the Drifters) The Loco-Motion, (Little Eva) I'm Into Something Good (Herman's Hermits)! I read an interesting book called 'Girls Like Us', by Sheila Weller that looked at her life (as well as that of Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon)...they all made great music and awful choices of men!
Aretha just had one of the purest voices in my lifetime. She could sing anything and sing it better than anyone else. Even doing duets with other greats, she would stand out. Part of my childhood from an early age, Mom loved her as well. On our stereo a classic day would be the sound track to a 2001 Space Odessy, followed by music from "Hair" and finished with Aretha. Great vid. nice analysis.
When you make a President shed a tear you know you're doing the right thing. Her piano playing is something else.. if you have a grounding in gospel you can't go wrong. Great analysis as usual.. keep safe, regards Michael
One of your best Fil... stunning performance, well covered by you. Yeah the queen of Soul for sure.. and my other favourite queen - of disco - DonnaSummer, will be a good one too when you cover her too , I know . .. Would love to see a tape of Aretha singing at Martin Luther King's funeral service .... rock on, mate.....
Proper adoration for a Queen; just to see the reaction of all the VIPs in the audience is priceless. Could anyone watch a performance like this with a dry eye? I think not. Thank you again Professor for what you do. You are priceless.
Beautiful! I always say my favorite musical is "Blues Brothers" for the "T-H-I-N-K" tour de force with Matt Guitar Murphey and all the participants! ❤️. This honors concert was emotionally thrilling!
You should cover her doing Nessun Dorma, at the Grammy's - asked at the last minute to do it, as Pavarotti cancelled in 1998. That is unbelievable to watch her perform an opera song!
Spoke to "Miss Franklin" on the phone at my job. I took the message to have the boss call her. Her home was close by and she was getting carpet from us. A small contact, but, hey now, she was the queen of Detroit!!
Fantastic Fil. 👍🎸 Thank you for this analysis, very special for me because my mother loved Ms. Aretha, period and we use to sing along and always appreciated the exquisite and absolute genius of this gift lady: Ms. Franklin. Have a great week.😎
Big up..back in the day someone asked me who i thought was the best female singer out, Mariah carey or Whitney Houston...i answered "Aretha Franklin" no doubt...hey man dig the channel and how you break down the performances...check out tis one if you can, peace. "Rachelle Ferrell - I can explain (live)"
Hey Fil, if you never did you should do an analysis of Aretha performing Bridge Over Troubled Waters. She takes ownership. Now, regarding this video, when Aretha starts you see Carol King going ga-ga. The reason is at this stage Aretha had stopped playing the piano publicly. I heard Carol King actually say this. Apparently Carol was so honored to see Aretha break that pattern, and so obviously showed Carol major props. Aretha was called by someone I can't remember, as Michigan's greatest natural resource, she being a native. I concur.
No one has had the ability to put me in a trance while they perform. I sat in front of the stage at a club performance she did so long ago (decades?) I was so engrossed in her performance that at first I did noticed she had walked near my table and looking at me AND not missing a note, she was able to change the words and tune and was singing 'Mary Had a Little Lamb'. I was shocked back into reality and Aretha started laughing and went back into her song. How can someone do all this (how did the musicians know?) with such perfection. Something I could never forget in this life time or the next one.
Wow - what an incredible performance! You're so right, Fil, that something like this comes along once in a lifetime if you're lucky! Please forgive me, as this may be an unpopular opinion, but this is an instance where I think perhaps the guitar was not needed during the analysis. For me, the powerful and moving performance and your words and passion behind them stand beautifully on their own.
Love the guitar lesson at the end. I’m not sure if I’ve seen you do that before but I appreciate it as a beginner songwriter. I seem to have a challenge in breaking songs down like you did here. Always love your insights.
This brings me to tears each time I see it. I am so happy that Carol enjoyed this so very, very much. President Obama's response was stellar as well. Ms. Aretha we will always love and miss you. You deserve your much needed rest. RIH❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🙏🙏
You can see that Carol could not see the Queen of Soul coming out to sing Carol’s song that the world was blessed to hear and see. What a piece of American history for all of to see.
No disrespect to the Marvelous Ms Franklin (I adore her) but you mentioning the frisson of a live performance overtaking the mere technicalities of singing. It made me think of the static electricity that went around the crowd when John Farnham sang with the Melbourne Symphony orchestra . His interpretation of the Beatles song - 'Help' was just so stunning, we all had goose bumps. We stood there clutching our chests with our eyebrows raised to the top of our heads. It was another superlative performance - like you said, a once in a lifetime feeling. We all knew he was good, really good, but this performance was out of this world and a lot of us were in tears. Paul McCartney said it's still his favourite rendition of the song. Someone the other day asked me if I thought he was auto tuned. I just laughed at his millennial cynical question. No mate, they didnt have them in those days, and anyway, he didn't need it. Check it out Phil. (Please 🙏) I really value your musical knowledge and appreciation of other musicians takents.
Before everyone started doing it all you had to do was mention the first name..... Mahalia, Elvis, Buddy, Aretha, Janis, Jimi, Miles..... and I'm sure there are many, many more but you say those first names and I know instantly who you're talking about.... That's the stuff of legends....
I need for all the naysayers to listen to this analysis of the Queen's vocals, perhaps then you're understand why she is, was, and always will be the Queen of Soul And why she still reign as the Queen of Soul. There is nobody and there will never be anybody that will can compare to the greatness of Aretha as a vocalist and a musical genius. Aretha is a musical instrument and It's called "Aretha" #longlivethequeen #arethafranklin #thequeenofsoul
Aretha is a generational talent, no question. Her voice is truly amazing. I've seen her, Tina Turner, Linda Ronstadt, Patti La Belle, the Pointer Sisters, Coco Taylor, live in concert. And I listen to Billie Holiday, Diana Washington, Whitney Houston, Big Mama Thorton, Big Maybelle Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, etc. But no one compares to Etta James. I had the pleasure of attending five of her concerts. It's a shame she never got the recognition she deserved. If you haven't heard of Etta, you may want to check her out., if not do an analysis of her singing. You won't be disappointed.
I remember that awesome performance. Ironically, I have been listening to Aretha's friend - The Empress of Soul - Gladys Knight - especially this song which first moved me back when it came out, and every time since - goose bumps This is also 2015 - she is 71 years old - Neither One of Us (Wants to be the First) - recommend this one too. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E9Mse32pEOU.html Something they both had/have that not many do these days - from the soul - they make us feel it. Also another one to check out is Gladys singing at Aretha's funeral - powerful, moving, consoling - songs/performances that I listen to over and over - because they move me
I saw her perform live once in the 90's and it was an unbelievable experience. I was stupid-young with a bad attitude, only into alt-rock and grunge and yet I was still blown away. She truly was the Queen. Thanks, Fil.
There's something I find very moving about musicianship that endures into old age, and especially when it is expressed through the voice. When I first saw this performance, in the few moments after Aretha was announced, I am sure I was not alone in feeling a pang of anxiety for how she might fare in this very intense moment of having to walk out on stage at such an auspicious event, and deliver a fitting vocal right out of the gate. But oh my God! The moment she opened her mouth I was blown away by how full and present her sound was. It was Aretha bloody Franklin sounding just like herself, and I teared up just like Barack. She gave a sensational performance that will be remembered and admired for a very long time.
Hi Fil ...I had to listen to the analysis twice in order to disconnect myself from the emotion you spoke of, to see beyond that. Aretha is my favorite singer thanks for making this video
AMERICAN WOMAN ARTIST SINGER/PIANIST SONGWRITER/TO BE YOUNG GIFTED AND SOOOOOOOOMUCHMORE whether she sat at a fender rhodes 88 or a concert grand she could set the flow with command and soar with a band or without lets at least establish that enough of this diva stuff ARETHA FRANKLIN WAS SIMPLY THE BEST GOTTA FIND ME AN ANGEL
I soooo love your videos ❤️❤️❤️. Nothing to do with alot of the reaction channels on youtube. You got yourself a new subcriber 😁. Thank you for this video ! ❤️😁
