Another reason I love your channel, Fil , is because you draw fans who aren't jerks , hiding behind their laptops and slinging mud at one another. You're a pleasant-human magnet .
Van is a genius. I live only a couple of miles from where Van grew up and he is rightly a massive hero in my part of the world. Two evenings ago I treated myself to playing 'In The Garden' and ' A Sense of Wonder' whilst watching the clouds drifting across the sky ... Van's music is so powerful and moving.
Van has the most soulful sound for a white boy I’ve ever heard. And, being a white boy, I can appreciate the heck out of what he does. In this particular song, WTF is wrong with the bass?
I agree, especially in the US. Most Americans remember him as a one hit wonder for Brown Eyed Girl, but he was so much more than that song(even though I love it).
I was at the dentist this week, and I mentioned Van to the hygienist , who was probably about 20, and she had never heard of him. I was shocked. What is wrong with todays youth.
Hello there Phil, I am glad to see that you are listening to Van Morrison's music, Van is a rare one a very special one, A little like Bob Dylan both men have always recorded and produced great music all during their lives, those men have to tour almost nonstop, their music is the fuel in their lives. Van music is a healing force, it brings you into the mistic, eases your mind, let you go and makes you feel better about your life.
Van Morrison is the best. Hands down. I saw him on the Into The Mystic tour. His warmup was Etta James. I was a kid and still understood I was in the presence of Greatness with both of those performers.
You just don't expect that voice to come out of that man. He can rock my gypsy soul any day. He's one of the most brilliant artists of his generation-of any generation-as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and arranger. For years, I only knew him from hearing the much-requested "Brown Eyed Girl" (which is my happy song) on the radio until someone introduced me to the albums "Astral Weeks"* and "Moondance" (ironically, I'm not fond of the title track-maybe because it's been overplayed, although that's not a problem for me with "Brown Eyed Girl"), then "T.B. Sheets", "St. Dominic's Preview", etc. *There's a great video of him doing "Cypress Avenue" live at the Fillmore East in 1970 on RU-vid that anyone who loves him should watch.
"I don't have to fear it and I want to rock your gypsy soul, Just like way back in days of old..." I so enjoy Van Morrison and have many of his songs on my playlists.
Your knowledge of music, technically, and historically, is super impressive. And your personality, and ability to explain to your viewers, makes for great videos. Easily one of my favorite channels.
I'm still amazed at how much music came out in 1977, I graduated high school and went into the military. I still remember trying to listen to much music when I was going through basic training, it was a great time for music.
Such an amazing singer and songwriter. Van Morrison was the most I ever paid to see a concert. He did Astral Weeks in it's entirety and greatest hits after, it was in 2008 and the ticket price was $265. After the first song, it was worth the cost.
Been a fan of Vans since the 60s. Always on the charts. One of the great vocalist ever. He has the ability, much like Louis Armstrong, to make you feel the song, to transport the listener to a nicer place. Such a great singer. Words can't explain the admiration I have for Van. "Tupelo Honey" is a masterpiece, IMO they way he sings that song is incredible, but that's something Van does with every song he sings.(there are no "fillers" he treats the song regardless of what it is, like it's an old friend). I'm such a huge fan. Sadly he never toured anywhere near me, even in all my travels, I've never seen him live. Van is the man.
Such a great song! Van Morrison knows how to write, sing and play a song that can touch your soul. Watching you listening to this, well it's just so good. 🤗😍😘❤
Van Morrison wrote some of the greatest songs and his unique voice gave them such depth and emotion. I love , love , love Van Morrison. Thank you so much for your great analysis of this underrated superstar. Why has he run under the radar of great artists?
I've got to say. I go up and down with my feelings about Van the Man. HOWEVER Van Morrison is the only artist I listen to every day. I move from one "era" to another. One day it might by his older works the next day it will be his later jazz work or the blues. Van Morrison has been all through the genres. And I appreciate it. Again having everything he's done gives me a different point of view than most. Sometimes I wake up to Van Morrison, often I'll drive to a client's office crank up his music, and very often I listen to Van while I work. His creativity helps mine. I'm a Architectural Designer and it helps, it really does. Van Morrison isn't the ONLY musician I listen to each day. But, he is the one that seems to fit in with my days, here and there. Thanks again Fil. You gave me knowledge I did not have.
I saw Van in about this timeframe in San Antonio. A friend urged me to go as I was apprehensive about how good it would be. Turns out I was a real shmedrick. I have never been more mesmerized in my lifetime. What a HUGE talent and body of work. I always loved his stuff with Them but his solo work is nothing less than stellar.
"This song is just about the universe" just made me chuckle. I always appreciate your observation and analysis. You're like nobody else on YT. A true music historian and critic.
Van's bands always have to be ready to follow him in tempo, volume, etc, just like a jazz band. He can't tell them beforehand, "Hey boys, at the 3:22 mark I'm gonna speed it up. Don't forget!" He doesn't even know when he's gonna speed it up or slow it down, there's a million different factors at play there. I think they can play what they want, pretty much, as long as they follow him.
@@jayedwards1205 It's pretty obvious he is not reading this as he speaks.... so even if he did look it up, it's an impressive amount of Detailed information to memorize...
Fil is a musician so he knows what he is talking about in that regard. In terms of biography of the artist, he has done additional research on top of what is in Wikipedia entries. But obviously the more obscure the artist, the more reliant he is on Wiki. Bear in mind he does a video a day for chrissakes, give him a break.
Ahoy, Fil, Blade Runner here. I want to thank you very much, lad, for your devotion to music, your knowledge and your commitment to sharing mankind's universal language. Because of you, Fil, I am enjoying music I never heard before. God bless ya, mate. Live long and prosper. 🖖
Van Morrison...love his singing...soo good...Fil. thanks...you are always so Awesome!! Oh.. Cliff Richard...he was one of my favorite old time singer...
It’s often said that the singing voice can be one of the greatest musical instruments. And perhaps nobody alive in my time on earth gives an example of this like Sir Van the Man.
I could listen to Van Morrison for hours and be quite happy. Great performance by a great performer. Great writer, singer, player. Great, great, great! As always, Fil, your research is much appreciated. Thanks! Peace and love to everyone!
Nick, my personal repeater track isn’t a track, it’s the (surprise!) “Astral Weeks” album, which I have left playing for as long as 36 hours. After a few plays it just kinda clicks in and feels like it belongs in my room.
I love hearing your analysis of the most mystical song born in the sixties and still being discovered and revered today! Van is just an absolute musical mystic!
Wow, Van Morrison was really a prolific musician. I didn't realize he put out so many albums. It was obvious he was really driven to produce and loved what he was doing!!
Talk about baring your soul... Something about this song just gets me. Moves me to tears. Beautiful lyrics. I love this particular live performance, especially this group of musicians playing with him for this performance. He knows exactly what he wants from them and what they can give him. It's a masterpiece. Van is a very complex and no-nonsense man. Takes no crap from no one either. One of my favorites of any genre. Everything you said Fil. Everything. Thank you. ❤
We were born before the wind Also younger than the sun Ere the bonnie boat was won As we sailed into the mystic Hark, now hear the sailors cry Smell the sea and feel the sky Let your soul and spirit fly Into the mystic And when that fog horn blows I will be coming home, mmm mmm And when the fog horn blows I want to hear it I don't have to fear it I wanna rock your gypsy soul Just like way back in the days of old Then magnificently we will float Into the mystic When that fog horn blows You know I will be coming home And when that fog horn whistle blows I gotta hear it I don't have to fear it And I wanna rock your gypsy soul Just like way back in the days of old And together we will float Into the mystic Come on girl Will they stop now
Listen to his brand new song dangerous. It’s personal directed at the health minister of N Ireland who called him “dangerous” because Van questioned the ridiculous useless lockdown measures which drastically harmed live music there for nearly two years.
We love van the man... He loves to rock your gypsy soul Brotherrrrr... Just like the day's of ole'.... The band is so tight... The bass rumble is beautiful... Mystic...
Such great musicians around him the whole time too. I saw him live in Glastonbury in the '80s and it was just this wave of music that took over, a whole outfit, carrying thousands of people away into the evening with them. Effortless sophistication. Van is like the storyteller in the middle of it.
Yes....it's "Van the man" ! What a wicked cool soul filled voice 😎 He's been a favorite of mine for a long time... thank you Fil,you get a soild 10/10 on this one 😆 Love the analysis and great back stories.... well done mate ✌😎
Yes, yes, yes❣️❣️❣️ Thank you, it was worth the wait. As soon as I saw the notification I started smiling😊 Of course you included a lot of info I didn’t know, and this was the music of my youth, of my life, and still fills my days🎼
One of the most unique artists of all time and also musical tranquilizer. Serious, anytime you're upset, listen to some Van and it will help you become calm.
"Legend" is a much overused word when it comes to describing celebrities, but in Van the man's case, it hardly seems adequate to describe his incredible talents and career.
Fil, thanks for reviewing Van Morrison! Besides totally uplifting my soul constantly, I have often marveled at his ability to pick the best musicians to record and perform with. They are always top notch and add to the creative dynamic of his songs. Your analysis was superb. I would like to mention one of my favorite songs of his, Cleaning Windows. The story line, the mention of his influences and struggle to perfect his craft are laid out so beautifully in that song. Another favorite of mine is In The Garden. It showcases every sort of emotion, power, glory, tenderness, and spirit that he is capable of. He is never stagnant and s still putting out incredible works of art today.
Another truly original creative artist! Vocally and musically. Such a huge catalogue of great songs! I have a alot of Van Morrison in my music collection. Live l loved him because you never knew what you were going to get, but it was always impressive! Saw him live in the late 70s and again in the late 80s. Two very different shows, but brilliant! Thanks for a knowledgeable great review!😎🎼🎶🎵
I love Van Morrison. This performance was transcendent, and yes, dynamics are everything. Interesting how he used the hammer-ons to accomplish that, and how the highs and lows were done in general. I really enjoyed this one!
Thanks Fil for reviewing this relatively rare live video of this great musician singing his equally great song. Watching this video this reminds me to enjoy the artist and their music, and not to dwell on individual personalities. We're all "human" for better or worse, right?? Another great review; thanks again!
I've been a fan of VM for - well, a very long time - most of my adult life. Into the Mystic is one of my favorites - but then being a lover of all kinds of music there must be at least 100 songs that are favorites. This song really showcased Van Morrisons as the true artist that he is.
That voice! That piano player's shirt! That bass player all over the place. Ahhh, the 1970s wouldn't be complete w/o chillin' to some Van Morrison. And, it IS a fabulous time for a moondance...
If you crave bad Van Morrisson songs you can always listen to his "contractual obligation session" for Bang Records. It's bad, but it's bad on purpose. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8SqZzH_34hA.html
I really enjoyed this one. Music is so beautiful and your critiquing really opened up the parts that previously had just gone over my head. How do you find time to do all these videos and answer everyone? Do you have more hours in a day then the rest of us? LOL
@Deva: Very well stated! Honestly I think Fil deserves a PhD in Teaching and History for his encyclopedic research/knowledge and respectful analyses of so many talented musicians, not to mention how Fil takes us [me ;)] "Into The Mystic"
Love Van Morrison! I wouldn’t have made it through college without the Moondance album (and Silk Degrees by Boz Saggs). I’ve seen him live several times, he never disappoints.
I've been listening tonight to Van Morrison's LP "Veedon Fleece" (1974) which I found in my parents record collection. And of course I had to come to see what Fil has to tell about Van Morrison😊. I've understood that "Veedon Fleece" didn't receive much praise when it was released, but is now referred to as a "forgotten masterpiece". And it really is - a masterpiece! Didn't appreciate Van Morrison when I was a kid, but I do now! Thank you for your analysis.
Wow Fil! For a split second all I saw when scrolling down was “British guitarist analyzes Van” lol Great choice! I absolutely love Van Morrison, his music just flows so smooth and beautifully. There’s a great video of Free performing All Right Now at the Isle of Wight. It would be killer to see you check it out. Cheers!
An enthusiastic thumbs up from me, long time fan of Van! I just watched a great video of Robin Trower performing Bridge of Sighs, and the camera work was perfect, I could really see how hard he had to work to get his unique sound. I hope to see your analysis of him someday, he certainly deserves a look.
This is why I love the acoustic guitar..it's such a clean sound, no gimmicks, no pedal boards, no "Edge"......and you're spot on... Van relies on dynamics....
This is one of my favorite channels, only thing I don't understand is why there are ONLY 86k subscribers ? Another great video Fil, looking forward to seeing your you tube 100K plaque very soon. Thanks.
@@jayedwards1205 Ok, I understand now what you meant. However, as a simple discussion of the channel's success as in more subscribers enjoying the content I believe Fil is doing something right. Thanks for the follow up.
Jay Edwards, I don’t think it’s just music Fil likes. Back when he was under 5k subs, we were all either musicians, or fans of eighties rock metal. It seemed at the time that Fil was “testing the waters” regarding whether people were interested in reviving that genre of rock (Dokken, Triumph, old Def Lep, etc.). I thought he was going to continue writing and producing rock songs. Then, people started requesting other (non eighties/non rock) guitarists. The subscribers have increased almost 20 fold, but what about the original plan: to make eighties metal type music, hire a touring band, and getting out on tour?
@@beachgirl4583 That adds a little more context to what Jay Edwards was saying, Thanks. I suppose for me its just I enjoy the content as is and I have gone back and viewed Fil's earlier content and...I like it too. Have a GREAT Day.
Thank you for pointing out Van's strategy in this song and as you know, he uses this in other songs he created as well. Van is my number one and always will be. So fortunate to grow up with his music almost from the beginning. Thank you for this coverage.
Thanks for all your great insights and observations of this great version. You really show what each musician is doing so that we can learn about musicianship, not just music. Van is one of a kind, and my absolute favorite musician.
You said it might take more than one look at Van? How about Sweet Thing at the Hollywood Bowl in 2008, esp. excellent interaction with the band. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1XGLoUmeNHg.html (esp. the band shifts into syncopation coming off the ecstatic viola solo : - D) And the guitar soloist is from the original recording 40 years earlier.
My God, what a melody! I saw Van Morrison in the seventies. At the end of his concert, people just would not let him get off the stage. He did three encores and left. The crowd just kept on for 15 or 20 minutes before we were all asked to leave and that the concert was over. He is a brilliant musician. I don't know how many instruments he plays, but it's a few.
One of my favorite songs and artist ever! Cocker does a great version of this as well as many, many others. As Van said, “they steal my songs”.... INCREDIBLE writer, one of the best.
Can’t thank you enough for this channel. Rediscovering the music I love and finding a new appreciation for artists I may have overlooked. Van never fails to move me.
Ah, yes ... "Into the Mystic", such a beautiful composition -- like the sweetness of a cold late autumn day spent dreaming under a warm blanket... Thanks Fil -- what a wonderful & insightful analysis -- Van is truly a musical prince among men -- soulful and full of understated genius... And what a tightly synchronized group of exceptional musicians!... Now THAT is the perfect ending to my "Midnight Special", Fil -- now I'll be, joyfully, "sailing into the Mystic".... From Harlem, New York -- rock! Goodnight/Day!✌🏼💖🎶🎵
