Brilliant video! Jimmy does an excellent job filling everything out on his own. It’s not easy to do. His left hand is cold and it’s bother him but he’s pulling it off. I used to keep my hands warm a par can. I bought a chunk of Zepps lighting rig and control gear many years ago. (I wish I still had it) I love this band. As a teenager I used to idolise Jimmy Page. I used to even look like him. Lol! Your videos are brilliant Fil! Thanks!

I also did not notice if there was any foot peddles either not even wah wah and don't forget John Bonham drum kit I think was not a double peddle for the bass drum back then made the skills special.

You are spot on about Page doing rhythm and lead guitar and how he had to be one his game to do it. Keith Richards remarked to Page he’s working too hard and he should get a rhythm guitarist. Listen to live tracks like Achilles and he’s handling so many parts. He’s my favorite.

Back in the 80s, we did this song at a gig ..... ONCE. The vocalist just couldn't do it. Who can blame him? Plant's voice is phenomenal. I still find myself amazed and wincing at those powerful upper registers which he managed to hang onto when others would have shredded into silence. (Of course to your point, we did cheat a bit. I played rhythm while my counterpart played lead. It sounded great, but, alas, we aren't Jimmy Page.)

I totally agree with Fil about the importance of a good melody. If that’s not there for me then I lose interest after awhile, even if the playing is good. That happened to me when I first heard a live metal band, we went to a club in NYC to hear a popular local group, their openings were great but then it seemed like the songs (melodies) didn’t really go anywhere. I noticed same with many (not all of course) the metal groups on the radio at that time, couldn’t really get into it that much, my ears want both.

I have heard every bootleg version of Zeppelin, and I don't remember a single bad performance(some bad recording though). Although you could tell a few times Bonham was drunk, he still kept his timing and the other players played around with his playing. They were still a great performance.

I don't want a Juke box sound. Although a band like pink Floyd was astonishly perfection as far as sounding like the record. And this was 1973. Many people in the audience muttering its sounds just like the record. Of course they improvised alot on there early live shows. In 73 they Quaded the whole venue. But yeah Zep and the Stones always made songs sound fresh.

Yeah, back when Jimmy was writing, the great guitar riffs were not all written. Now? You can't write a single note intro riff without someone going oh, that sounds like Zep or Van Halen or whoever. Page wrote a lot of hit riffs. Eddie V wrote a few himself. Wish they'd zoomed in a bit on Page in the solo but again.... we both know that the true cameraman's job is to film the singer during the guitar solo. :)

8:20 Page's ability to "write a hit" is what separates him from most of the other great guitarists. Beck, Blackmore, Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn were/are all amazing guitarists, but how many hits did they write? Sure, they had some hits, but most were written by someone else, and none can touch what Page with Zeppelin did.

Great analysis... Plant is so strong on vocals that he is like an other played instrument. I’ve read that Plant’s singing voice was really really loud without a microphone. I think that allowed him to cut through the mix. I also loved when Plant and Page traded off solo lines or Plant would wail what Jimmy was playing... That was just such a devastating dynamic especially live.

Bonham and Jones got a lot of credit but not enough. Jones was pulled into so many directions with bass and keyboard that he in essence was the staple that kept the songs together. But like Elvis’ drummer once said, Elvis’ voice was so dramatic and had so much bravado that he was his own drum kit with his voice. Not quite true with plant but plant had that unique beautiful voice he could cover any mistakes with his voice. Very talented band for sure. Many will disagree I’m sure but top to bottom imo the best band ever. I never heard a zepp song where I said no way, turn that off. I’ve heard a few Elvis songs I did that to. And with the Beatles, with revolution #9 and a bunch of others that made me think, couldn’t they just do covers of Sesame Street to fill in voids. Uggh. Lol. They were great so a few songs here and there for fun was nothing to them.

jett peters OMG I don’t care if rush last 100 years! Rush’s only melodic album was the first one. They are nowhere in the class of Led Zeppelin. One time when I worked in a music store teaching music, I was in back with the other music teachers joking that I could write a Rush song. So I started slamming perfect fifths in the key of Am, and some people in the hall wall stuck their heads in the door and ask damn is that rush? Rush is a boring version of AC/DC! I’ll say this for Rush. I enjoy those classical intros their guitarist did. I can play everyone of them, like the intro for trouble in the forest. But once you get to the song it is horribly boring music! ¡Da da da DA-da don!

Funny that all 3 of the biggest hard rock bands in the early 70’s were all single guitar. Deep Purple had Jon Lord often basically playing his fuzzed out organ as if it were a guitar, and even though Black Sabbath was by far the heaviest of those bands and by proxy probably the heaviest yet heard back then, but still just Tony Iommi. I think he used to compensate during his solos by hitting bass notes and low octaves to fill out the sound on stage.

Greatest rhythm section by a mile. I've never heard a live recording where Jones and Bonzo weren't sensational. I listen to some of that late 60s and early 70s live stuff, and there are so many moments that are just jaw-dropping. Plant and Bonzo in particular could put explosive energy into their performances. Around the mid 70s, Page started having sobriety issues and Plant's vocal chords were a bit worn. Still a great singer, just no longer the Viking Sex God vocals.

One of my favorite bands, they had it goin' on. Funny how the audience is so calm, little did they know they were watching & listening to history being made.

Fil, I dig your analysis. You're such a fan of music and its various genres and it comes through on your videos. Keep up the good work my friend. P.S. John Paul Jones was, in my opinion, the best musician in a band of 4 incredible musicians. Jimmy Page is the Riff Master General.

My son listens to rap mostly, I introduced him to zep and now every time I go visit he plays me a new zep song on guitar. All these years later they are still winning fans with the music. Greatest band of all time. And just a side note you remind me of a young Paige!!!

Bit late but a great live version by Zeppelin is Achilles last stand from the 79 knebworth gig, I was their and couldn't believe it when Page managed to play that on his own! I can't think of another guitar player who could have done it without backing tracks and/or another guitarist on stage as back up..

Just curious you being an expert. Us fans compare and make a list, my top 3 guitarist is jimmy page, Stevie ray, and Jimi Hendricks. Besides that I think Eddie Van Halen and Ted nuggent are really underrated and disrespected by many fans as guitarists. Not a big fan of nuggents singing but like the others could make the guitar speak. Love to hear your thoughts if possible

Zep did a lot of great music and albums but this piece is by far my favorite because it's just had that raw edginess to it, that you never forget. Those guys have to be, at least in my mind, one of the top 3 greatest rock groups of all time. And quite arguably number one.

That analysis was really good and I'm going to watch it a few more times, I agree it's a really good performance. You really brought to light the energy that this band puts out with just three musicians and one lead vocalist. I'm not a big Plant fan in terms of vocals, but I have to agree he really did this one well. You really have to have a lot of presence on stage when there's only a few of you, and Plant has that talent, he really owns the stage, it's not easy to do when the others are playing solos, you need to do something to keep the audience interested. Although when the camera panned the audience at one point, I thought they were all on valium. Also watched your Rory one that was good too. Keep up the good work!

LZ has been my favorite band since 1982. I do have to correct you on a couple of things though. LZ did not write all of their songs. Many of their songs are covers from old Blues artists. In fact, if you dig deep, you find that LZ is part cover band and part original.
