I got invited to meet Ed King back in the mid 90s at Lambert’s Cafe in Sikeston Mo.Got to hear him play this song solo in a small setting.I still get stirred up just thinking about even now.I was just your average Joe, working for the street department at the time but he made me feel like I was part of it all. What a Super down to earth man.God bless Ed King, his Family and Friends.Skynyrd Forever!!!

@@redshield3296 That's Steve Gaines, who replaced Ed. Steve is another force of nature in terms of talent, snuffed out much too early in the plane crash. Interestingly, they were both born on the very same day. There's some but not much footage of his playing, but Street Survivors is his Skynyrd album, and it's a whopper. God bless them both!

Ed's Strat licks are some of the finest ever recorded and your point about his opening solo is solid. He got the whole idea across in 4 bars and finished it off with that neat little whammy bend. Perfect. Just what a solo should do. I think Skynyrd was one of the best bands at recording their guitars. They never seemed to get in each others way and the mix between Strats and Gibsons always sounded great.

Ed was a musical genius. He arranged the majority of Skynyrd's music during his time with them. I went through a period where I listened to Skynyrd about as loud as I could. As I've gotten older I now listen through headphones to get the separation of the 3 guitar parts. Ed always found a part for himself to compliment Gary and Allen . Phenomenal guitar player. RIP.

Hey Phil, just had to write in and say that you nailed it beautifully. Ed King was one of the most underrated guitarists ever. He was such a huge part of Skynyrds first and best three albums and they never had the same magic without him. I am encouraged by the thought of Ed now with Jesus, because he was a true believer. Hair Bear without Ed King Sweet Home Alabama never would have been written. Subsequently Skynyrd owes practically 90% of their success to that song and therefore to Ed King for writing it. Amongst all the members in that band the two most important to its success were Ronnie and Ed. But to make the statement that nobody but Ronnie made it happen is about as laughable a statement as I’ve ever heard.

When Ed left the band one of his projects was putting out an instructional book on playing lead guitar. It has a series of hooks and licks that Ed wrote with instructions on how to play them and use them in your playing. This predated cd's and the internet so the book came with a cassette tape so you could hear the licks in the book. Ed played the licks at normal speed and also at a slowed down speed so you could follow along with the diagrams in the book and once you got them memorized you could work them up to speed. Ed even included a section of him playing rhythm guitar for each lick so you would have a backing track to practice the leads over! I'm guessing the tape and book are rare items today but worth checking out if you want to get to know how his thought process worked when he was developing guitar parts.

@@GoldSeals not a big Artimus fan so don't listen to what he says. I misspoke though abt what I meant. I meant as in a list of best guitarists of all time. Top 50 or whatever. I would say for me Hendrix, Clapton & Stevie Ray probably my top 3 but I would certainly think out of 5 guitarists 1 would make the list of tops. You almost always see best guitar solo of all time, Free bmBird is usually top 3. Also some have Allen & Gary best guitar duo on Free Bird. It is like that is the only song they get acknowledged for. IMO Allen great lead esp. Gary & Ed played lead, rhythm & slide, could do it all. Poor Steve was just getting started, way he came in to Skynyrd & 10 wks later he is out there with the big boys playin at Knebworth. I guess he just didn't have enough time. I think he might have been the the next SRV, if you listen to his stuff in Crawdad, to me he even sounds like SRV at points. Whole band really underrated inc their guitar players. If you look in RNR HOF, there are people from 60's/70's that never made it in but some 80's/90's people already in there. That whole thing is a joke, if you get inducted, you still have to buy tickets to come? WTF is that all abt?

One of the coolest things about Ed's main solo on the song that I don't know if you mentioned is that the basic rhythm he composed along with Gary , while Ronnie composed the lyrics on day 1 , and then that night the solo came to Ed in a dream . I had never heard a musician say they had dreamed something like that but that is how Ed said it came to him note for note in a dream . Another interesting fact I heard Ed say was that Al Kooper did not like the solo , and tried urging Allen Collins to come up with one , and Allen told Kooper , " Man , he dreamed that solo , I'm not messin with it . " lol . It was great to hear how those guys allowed each other space with that band and respected each others differing styles . God Bless You Ed +

I was fortunate to have front row at the 87 reunion show at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. I was a new player then, and his soft touch and precision was inspiring. It was so dominant, it was noticeable. Especially, to watch him play. Should check out the documentary on that tour. Search Lynyrd Skynyrd 1987 Tour full and there's an hour and half vid with Charlie Daniels narrative. Ed's badness is all over that. Has full length songs and interview footage. It's a 10. That's the show I went to. They put Ronnie's hat on a mic stand with a spotlight pointing straight down on the hat during Free Bird. No vocals. Johnny said no one could do it justice, so he wouldn't sing it. Everyone in that place was sobbing. It was unexpected and amazing.

Just to dispel any myths, the original track of Sweet Home Alabama is recorded in standard tuning, straight 440. You can tune your guitar standard and play along with it as I did, also hold a tuner up to your sound source and it will show the same thing. They may have tuned down for live performance but not for most of their recordings other than some examples mentioned elsewhere in this thread.

True Story - I actually took maybe 4 or 5 guitar "lessons" from Ed back in 1981 when I was still in High School. He had placed an ad in the local paper for guitar lessons/band consultation. I say "lessons" because all he actually did was spend time teaching me Skynyrd songs. The thing that really sticks in my mind today as I think about it (besides he was the nicest guy), was at that time he was using a stone pick which gave him an incredibly unique sound. What a great gracious man he was for his incredible patience as he watched me fumble through my attempts at recreating the music he wrote with that iconic band...at the time I didn't realize how lucky I was to have those moments. RIP Ed

Just to clarify, Leon Wilkinson was not a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd when this song was recorded for the 2nd album. Drums were played by Bob Burns. Thanks for giving Ed his due. He is often overlooked in the LS story.

Like most viewing this YT, I've heard SHA literally countless times and it's STILL never gotten old. Just last week at an outdoor small town sponsored show, a local band playing. In between their 1st & second sets, SHA led off the PA system fill time music and it was just cool. The song's damn near half century old now. I loved it.

This video explains exactly why I love this song and Saturday Night Special. I was five when Alabama came out and I loved it. I picked up the guitar shortly after that due to all of the other great Blues/Rock players at the time. I had no idea Ed King wrote two of the most iconic Skynyrd songs until just before he died when he made that video with Marty Schwartz. Ed truly was an essential part of that band just like Ronny, Allen, Gary, etc. and you can tell that by their music after Ed left. Not taking anything away from Gaines or others since, just more of a salute to Ed. Seemed like a truly great person as well. Great video! I have always heard Ed's nuance and have done my best to mimic it when playing the songs.

Ive played guitar for over 50 Years now. And have played this song for nearly as long and every guitar player plays it slightly differently.I myself still struggle with that first little fill Ed plays. Im here to say Fil is the first person to describe what makes this song work. It is in fact one of those songs that just cant be copied perfectly no matter how good the guitar player is, because the feel and the talent and the touch 'Ol Ed King lays down is his and his all alone. I can count on one hand the famous guitarists that own this rare ability. Make no mistake, Ed is one. And that song as a total package is one of the rare pieces that transcends instantly the uplifting feeling a classic song can do. It manages to accomplish that whether it's coming from a crackling AM car radio back in the seventies or a powerful state of the art HiFi system!

I just saw a clip with Ed a few months ago where he decided LS needed a Strat to compliment the Gibson’s Gary and Allen played. Brilliant. I think his slide playing on Curtis Lowe and Mississippi Kid was epic.

Eddie was a friend of mine and I miss him very much. He used to find it funny that many people thought this song was in D. Even Steve Gaines played the solo in D. Eddie did not know why. He was an amazing player indeed. Ed loved his guitars, his dogs and Sharon.

It was years after I heard Skynyrd before I found out Ed was also responsible for the guitar work in another song I'll never get out of my head - Incense and Peppermint by Strawberry Alarm Clock. If you've never heard that, find it. A completely different style and tone, but just as iconic.

Great player and you're spot on about the groove. I've been in bands who have covered this but the groove has to be precise and many miss that push that's in the chorus, which is essential to the feel of the song. R.I.P. Ed, you deserve more recognition for all that you gave us.

Ed, Billy and Leon were the true musicians in the band. They understood theory. Gary, Ronnie Alan, etc... were "garage band" fanatics. And that doesn't say anything bad at all about them. Great blend of talents, great consistent sound (even when they changed to Peaveys) and just a great fit.

What’s amazing is that Ed said he played that song on the original track using a Strat that he absolutely hated. “I can hear myself fighting the damn thing all the way through”, he said. I’m no expert, but I believe Ed won that fight.

Another interesting fact is that Steve Gaines, who played some really good stuff on Street Survivors and whose style was a bit similar to Ed's (especially the percussive sound stuff on the Strat) was born on the same day as Ed (14.9. 1949) .... Listen to "I know a little" on Street Survivors!

Ed really was the most technically proficiant guitarist to ever play in LS .His use of pinch harmonics & that melodic rolling technique is top notch .Ed was very smart with his songwriting as the royalty checks are still rolling in to his widow . Poor Artimus played his nuts off for years and doesn't get a dime from LS. It's like he was just an employee.

I can remember the first time I heard this song I thought that's a strat! Wait what? in a southern rock song so out front on the track. And, such tasty licks. Then, Ed King grew up in Glendale Cal. not far from where I grew up! He was in "The Strawberry Alarm Clock" opening for the Beach Boys in the late 60's. He ran into Ronnie Van Zant in Texas and the rest is history. He wrote some of the lyrics to Sweet Home and some of their other iconic hits. Ed seemed like a nice guy and he was a great guitar player. RIP Ed.

Funny story from Ronnie Hammond of the Atlanta Rhythm Section concerning Ed, Bob Burns and Ronnie Van Zant. Hammond lived upstairs at Studio One in Doraville, GA. 3am, Hammond was awakened by the most hell-raising he'd ever heard, and this was coming thru 10 inch thick studio sound-proof walls! Hammond called them swamp dwelling hillbillies, and almost got his @#$$ beat!

R.I.P Ed King you gave us one of the greatest guitar achievements in music history. Your mark in music will always be heard through you playing and writing ability. And your humble personality ( Ed told of how Gary Rossington was playing was playing a cord structure in-rhythm and he took that and wrote the entire guitar parts on Sweet Home Alabama ) he said he had to give credit where credit was due. And I've heard Gary tell the same story. Great guitar man
