British guitarist reacts to the MASSIVELY overlooked talent of Joanna Connor. 

This lady is doing backyard barbeques while Ariana Grande has ELEVEN of the top forty pop chart positions, including the top three - equaling the Beatles. I'm not sure if that means we're living in end times or in the idiocracy because those positions are backward. This lady is simply an incredible talent and should be a household name, a freakin' icon. Nice analysis too.

Joanna is a Chicago treasure. I have seen her for 30 years having put countless hours to the wee hours of the morning in the Chicago blues clubs most particularly at Kingston Mines. Many of the great Chicago players have now passed (save Buddy Guy) but Joanna carries the torch in a most legit way and she deserves to be recognized. Incidentally, Joanna has lost a great deal of the weight you see her in this video and she is a fine looking woman. The real deal friends.

Gotta comment on her character. She headlined a festival that I backlined and stage managed. A fifteen year old student of mine who was very advanced was there as a stage hand. She practically adopted him and was incredibly encouraging. Utterly gracious with our crew and played a killer show for about five thousand lucky people. Glad to see her re-emerging. Thanks Fil!

Lol. Late again. I've been watching Joanna for a lot of years and she can really get with it. I think the BIG music labels have not backed her because she don't fit the stereotype babydoll perfect ten. Personally I enjoy her slide playing and in my opinion a great blues voice. She also has a good backing band that helps bring out her strong leads. Good show Fil!

I was lucky enough to see her in the 1990s when she was touring. She was one of my favorite live blues performers at the time. She is well-known in the blues world, but as you said, dreadfully overlooked in general. Just watched a video from this year's Chicago Blues Festival. She's lost some weight. Ever heard of a woman named Sister Rosetta Tharpe? She was playing rock 'n roll before they even had a term for it. She had a huge influence on a lot of mid-20th century blues, gospel, rock and even some country players..

I could hear the intro time and again, if I didn't know better I would have guessed it was Johnny Winter playing. Music is an art but for the labels it's an art to be exploited to make money and If the fickle finger of fate doesn't touch you you can forget about fame and fortune. Your analysis is spot on.

I can't remember where but I saw clips of Joanna playing a long time ago, she absolutely knocked it out of the park way back then. it's only fitting that after having paid her dues that she receives some kind of recognition for the incredible talent that she is cuz she's definitely got double trouble going on with that voice and her playing. She's a really talented woman.

Ha! Just when I thought of someone really good that you haven't analysed yet, I find, AGAIN, that you beat me to it! LOL It is a crying shame that someone of her tremendous talent isn't more broadly recognized. ITA with the reasons you cited for why she isn't a household name, with one addition - she's a woman in a genre people associate with men. I stumbled across her 8 years ago or so and was gobsmacked that I hadn't heard of her before. Now, Fil, have you thought about switching from hard rock to the blues? 😉 You know you want to ... ☺

Back in the early '90s, NPR would, on its Sunday morning edition, do 25 minute or so length feature of an up and coming musician. That's how I found out about Joanna. That show she demonstrated the "Dust My Broom" intro and discussed how she approached playing it...Last night, I was listening to her '94 'Living on the Road live performance and setting aside her guitar playing was thinking about what a wonderful vibrato she has while singing--so it's a very good point made by Pegasus makes about her all around abilities. Woman has more than paid her dues in a difficult and sexist business and still looks very happy to be on stage. I still haven't seen her live but if she makes it to the PNW I'll make it a point to be there.

The blues is all about expression with the instrument/s and/or the voice.... Some time ago I attended a friends 50th wedding anniversary. it was a eat outside do.. in Spain. my friend had hired a guy to play in the garden... he was absolutely brilliant, mostly blues and soft rock, nothing really to annoy the neighbours..Years ago about 1971/2 I attended the wedding of a childhood friend, we all adjoined to the local village hall for the reception......the band was Dr Feelgood...!!

Never heard of her before watching this vid, on a bit of a marathon with your channel at the moment, I wish to express the utmost gratitude for exposing clearly one of if not the best current blues guitarists ( I did not say "female blues guitarists" because gender is irrelevant! ) out there. When I saw this vid my first reaction was "Why the fuck have I never heard of this killer artist?!" Oh yeah, then images of all the semi ( semi being disproportionally complimentary ) talented bimbos swept across my mind! Hot chicks sell, supremely talented artists do not! Well I just bought 2 of her albums so that is not true, they do sell if true music lovers and not shallow record company executives have their way! All hail the Queen, Queen Joanna! I want to marry her, immediately divorce her just so that I can marry her again!

I so agree with the idea of "don't prejudge on image" I do think people prejudge even more on genre. When being told that the music festival you will be going to is "blues oriented" I believe that many think "hmm, this is something I will need to pay attention to" and not in a good way. That is, in order to be entertained you must pay attention to the lyrics and the music, not good background entertainment for some (well many). I myself am just now taking interest in "the blues'. Perhaps it is because I have more time after retirement. I know that there are many very interested in this genre. I also know that in my geographical area (LA CA, Southwestern USA) I can't think of one radio station (ever, not just currently) that concentrated on "playing the blues." Just trying to explain what we see. I do not think it is all about "image". Take Samantha Fish. Nothing at all wrong about that image but she still "plays second" to a degree. Great analysis. IMO, Duane Allman is great because he plays well technically and he has amazing emotion, soul and expression. IMO, this woman is the one of the very very few guitar players who come close to that level of playing.

I saw Joanna play in a small local club about fifteen years ago, and her slide stuff was so overpowering I had to go sit in a corner for a while just to get my bearings. Thanks for giving her a platform. She deserves it.

She is one of the best sounds not just in blues but in general she is simply awesome yet she worked her ass decades to get maybe 1% of what others got with much less talent. Why ? just cause she doesn't have that sexy look media likes to show? yea, she looks like she would eat half a hipo and still be hungry, she could probably kill an elk with a backhand slap. She is far from an Elle magazine first cover. But when you go to a rock or blues concert, is that what you pay for? to see sexy chicks ? yea, ofcourse you want that, but you want that at the afterparty . You pay a ticket to see an awesome singer performing with insane talent. She has that. She can give you best quality for your money on that ticket.
