The rule when a player’s helmet comes off is that they are to skate to the bench if they’re unable to put it on right away or it’s a penalty, if a goalie loses his helmet play is stopped by the refs

Yeah I have a feeling they arent as many views for Hockey as other things so he left you guys behind that made him what he is. He even said in the video he didn't miss it. I guess if you dont give him money on his other channel you dont count anymore. Kind of sad how these guys grift off American fans. Kind of sad really. Time to lose these videos. Its the same old act.

I got hit so hard going through the slot with my head down, and I’m not kidding……. It felt like every bone in my body broke, I’m 60 now, and I’ve played in thousands of games between high school, college and beer league, and to this day it’s the only hit when I think about it that still makes me feel all sorts of not good. Hockey is just a sport that is hyper violent, and I love it. Love your reactions

Random FYI but the music at 4:55 is Hava Nagila. That’s one of the main Jewish folk songs we use to dance the hora (the circle dance). It’s often played on the organ at hockey games.

Hockey especially in the playoffs has been described many times as war on ice. You don't win the Stanley Cup without a few bruises. Hockey players are some of the toughest players of any sport.

I thought the NHL playoffs last year were about as good as I would ever see but this year's playoffs were just golden. I had wandered away from the sport over the years but have re-discovered my love for ice hockey. That level of competition is just awesome to see. No other sport comes close in my opinion.

for the Nashville/Vancouver one with the goalie hit, that one was extra bad because DeSmith was our backup goalie (Demko, who was a Vezina finalist this season was injured and out for the rest of the playoffs at this point), and the backup for that game was a guy who'd played a total of 10 games at the NHL level.

Re helmet clarification: in the NHL if a player loses his helmet play continues until puck is frozen and the player can retrieve his helmet. In international hockey (ie Olympics) if a player loses his helmet the play is blown dead immediately and a face-off ensues.

Since you do so many of these, I hope you don’t mind if I mention somethings, which, maybe you already know. But if you don’t they will help you understand more of what’s going on. I went to uni in Toronto, and met three Scottish exchange students one year. We became good friends and I decided to take them to a Maple Leaf game before they left back to Glasgow. They’d never seen hockey before, so I thought it would be a treat, something to remember from their time in Canada. They did have a great time, and were fascinated by the game, but it was apparent that without any prior hockey knowledge, they were more than a little confused at many things that I take for granted. So the more you know the more you can enjoy. I’m only talking about contact here, since that’s what many of these videos are about. The technique is taught to kids once they reach age 12-13 (well, that was when I was taught it, I think they might have raised the age since then, maybe 14-15, I don’t know). Upon approach, bend your knees to store your energy, spring into the hit with your legs, making shoulder to shoulder or shoulder to chest contact. Follow through by thrusting out your arms for maximum effect. That is the standard shoulder check. There is also the hip check where your hip makes contact with their hip, but make sure you dont lower yourself too far because if you hit his knees, it’s a clipping penalty, and its also very dangerous. Players have lost careers taking low hits that tear their knee ligaments (see:Cam Neely) This is the check that sometimes sees the target flip head over blades. Obviously we cannot target the head. You cannot take more than three strides before you hit a player, or you can get a charging penalty (but this is sometimes hard to police because refs aren’t exactly out there counting strides) no hitting from behind, that’s a boarding penalty plus its a b*tch move. You can’t hit a player without the puck, obviously, until there is puck on stick contact. So this is where a sense of timing comes in. You have a three count to hit a player who has just played the puck off his stick, otherwise, it’s a late hitting penalty. The purpose of hitting is to separate the puck carrier from the puck. The purpose of hitting a player from whose stick the puck has just left is two fold. One, to separate him temporarily from the play, and two for straight up intimidation because we all know who have played hockey that it is much more difficult to make good decisions with the puck when you have it in the back of your mind that your about to get-to use your term-“CRÈME CRACKERED”, LOL. Intimidation all around is a huge thing in hockey. As I said we learn very young that the team who is intimidated on the ice, shows it on the scoreboard. So hitting and fighting are not just a spectacle, in fact it has no place as a spectacle accept for fans who want it to be that way. On ice level, the fighting and hitting play an integral role in the outcome of the game. Both can be huge momentum boosters, and get your whole team fired up. Even when a guy looses a fight…the fact that he stood up, gave it his all is enough to earn him the respect of both teams and fans, and ignite a momentum shift. You would fight a guy to intimidate, or to show him you wont be intimidated. You also fight a guy to enforce respect, protecting your teammates from cheap shots, and sticking up for them all around. Every inch they take, you take one back without hesitation. If you hesitate, they will get an energy boost from having successfully intimidated you. If you let sh*t slide, you will be eating sh*t all game. Don’t eat sh*t. All this we have a phrase to describe, which is simply called, “the game within the game”. Sorry for writing so much. It’s my annoying habit. Cheers.

Honestly, it is a good thing you would rush off the ice if your helmet came off. There is a rule called the helmet violation, if a skater’s helmet comes off mid play and they cannot immediately play the puck they must either put the helmet back on or leave the ice, failure to do so results in a minor penalty upon playing the puck.

If anything I think hockey is tamer than it used to be. I remember going to games in the 1980’s and we’d all wonder whether a player would be throwing their gloves onto the ice. That meant it would be a straight out fight. Sometimes other players would jump into the fights as well. I’d heard they really toned it down so there weren’t so many fights. There’s actually a great old movie called “Slap Shot” that’s pretty funny.

I hope you watch a video about Bobby Orr, the best defenseman and one of the best players of all-time. At 1:21, the guy in white (#73) doing the hitting is rookie Matt Rempe (pronounced "REMP-ay"). He's 6-foot, 7-inches and weighs a relatively light 240 pounds. He's so tall that he's been getting penalties for hitting guys in the head without raising his arms. Most hockey nicknames are lame, but he's been given a good one: "Rempire State Building" (he plays in New York City). At 1:58 and 3:22, the hitter is 6-foot-6 Nikita Zadorov, whose nickname has been "Big Zee." Having just signed with Boston, he asked that people not use his nickname, because 6-foot-9 future Hall-of-Famer Zdeno Chara was also called that. Will people ironically call him "Little Zee?" Someone suggested "Big Zaddy," which I like, but apparently "zad" means "ass" in Russian, so he might object. As of a rule change made 2 or 3 years ago, a player who loses his helmet must immediately put it back on or skate to the bench. Previously, he was allowed to finish his shift (usually 30-60 seconds) without the helmet.
