There is a site with all kinds of umpire ratings; for Doug Eddings it looks like he is one of the lower-accuracy umpires (though by no means the worst). But it does have him tied as least consistent, which to the point you guys make, can be just as frustrating to a hitter as flat out bad calls

Jomboy loves arguments over balls and strikes. Umps may be bad at calling those, but they've always been bad. Players are getting more argumentative though, mostly because a handful more of hits can make a huge difference in their season and to their multimillion-dollar paychecks. There's a great speech in the movie "Bull Durham" where Kevin Costner's character talks about the difference between hitting .250 and .300 - one hit a week. And someone who hits .300 makes a lot more money than someone hitting .250. They're fighting for every at-bat.

Slightly unrelated, but with you guys doing longer-form videos now with the movies/series, have you considered watching the History of the Seattle Mariners here on RU-vid? Genuinely one of the best sports documentaries out there. I know that it was recommended by a lot of others when you were first getting into baseball, but I think you'd appreciate it a lot more now with how much you both have learned! Really enjoy what you guys do, and I look forward to every baseball reaction that you put out!

you are 100% correct that all we can ask for really from an umpire is consistency, they don't get to see the imaginary strike zone on tv after all. however, that is only true to an extent.there is a fine line between giving the batter a chance vs. not giving them a chance. Meaning when the ball is too far outside and that's a consistent call all night, people are still gonna loose their minds.

_Meaning when the ball is too far outside and that's a consistent call all night, people are still gonna loose their minds._ If the call is consistent with what he's been calling all game, he would have a stronger case. You're right, though, fans are still going to be upset either way.

@@MMuraseofSandvich fans and players. theres a concept of giving batters a chance. its a well known fact that some pitches that are technically balls are still hitable. however when u start to venture further outside of the zone it definitely becomes unhitable.

Consistency only matters if your balls and strikes are at least reasonable. If you’re consistently calling strikes six inches off the plate or above the chest, it’s still immensely advantageous to the pitcher which would be extremely frustrating as a hitter. At that point, as an umpire, you should be reevaluating your strike zone, but we know their egos are often far too big to even consider something like that.

he's an umpire that totally falls for catchers "framing" a pitch. catchers are taught to move their glove into the strike zone for any pitch close to a ball. some umpires pay closer attention to the glove than the ball and call strikes based on where the catcher's mitt ends up

Except that by the official rules those higher pitches were in the strike zone. The strike zone box is just a reference and not accurate.

At least two of those high pitch calls were correct. The box overlay that was added to the film was incorrect.

Consistency is overrated a bit, I think. There are dimensions to the strike zone in the rule book for a reason. If an umpire is consistently calling a terrible zone that ump is still calling a terrible zone, it doesn't make it better that the ump sucks for both teams, it just means the ump is likely incompetent rather than ethically challenged.

People have become too dependent on that strike zone box, which is just a reference point and not exactly accurate. Those "high" pitches were in the strike zone according to the official rules. The strike zone is from the knee caps to the mid torso. There used to be a saying "From the knees to the nips" and you can see that box is lower than that.

I got news for you, buddy. The strike zone hasn't extended up to the "nips" since 1968.

That rectangular overlay that TV purports to show a batter's strike zone is rarely accurate in displaying the top and bottom of a batter's strike zone. Not only is every batter's strike zone unique but it is only determined at the point in time when the batter starts his swing. The TV box overlay is always shown when the player is standing before even getting into his stance, and it appears to be the same for every batter whatever his height. Obviously, the strike zone for a 6'4" batter will be different than one who is 5'10". I can't argue with the display of the inside and outside of the zone, but the top and bottom lines of the box are merely approximations, in many cases flat-out wrong. I contend that the umpire was correct in most of the high strikes he called on Crawford. I'd include the MLB rule describing the strike zone, but it would make an already long comment much too long. I recommend a Google search.

THANK YOU. I've come to hate the box on the TV. I know it's not going away, but I sure wish it would. Look at it here, it's from JP's belt to below his knees. And JP's average height for an MLB player. I love the guy, but some of those "high" strikes looked fine to me.

They need to stop putting that box up. Strike Zone is Knee's to armpits, and when you see this box, it show to bottom just below his knee's and the top of it just above the belt, so the pitches above the box were actually strikes, if they adjusted it for every batter, than it would show that they were indeed in the zone. the outside ones can be debated upon, but not the ones above.

No, it isn't. No one calls pitches at the arm pits strikes.

Dont take the tv strike zone as accurate, the top of the strike zone on tv was below the top of the players belt which made the high calls look bad. As he said the umpire called 9 calls against him but the player reacted as 23 had been called against him which tells me that the umpires strike zone even though far from perfect is far more accurate than this players. He was just moaning like a Yankee player.
