According to KIRO-7, a Seattle TV station, they tracked down Roger Szomdis--or rather, a nephew of his. According to his nephew, Roger is still alive, still a big Mariners fan, never married or had kids, now lives in Pennsylvania, and apparently is a very private person and simply didn't want any publicity.

25:36 - that random dot in ~2004ish - his name was Al Pedrique - he was a minor league manager for the Tuscon Sidewinders when he was suddenly promoted mid-summer to manage the complete flustercluck 2004 Arizona Diamondbacks after they fired their previous manager. The team was terrible all season and Pedrique had a 22-61 record as their manager (the team lost 111 games overall) - perhaps not surprisingly, he would never get another chance to manage in the major leagues, so it remains his career total. Now, 20+ years later, and Pedrique is still managing in the minor leagues, currently in Pennsylvania.

Maybe someone mentioned it already, but Emil Sick, the beer magnate, named his team the Rainiers because that was the name of his beer brand. Ownership has changed quite a few times for both, but the team and the beer are both still called Rainier and share the same logo. The ultimate in synergistic marketing, minor league ball team and cheap lagers, we call em vitamin Rs.

I agree and I am right here, waiting for the rest of the reaction. This is my favorite Jon Bois Production, the entire Mariners History is a great and amusing romp through the bookends of our lives. We know the pain of last place and futile efforts, along with the failure in a post season that won 116 regular season games. Been here, since Game One: Kingdome, the Angels. We lost 7-1 if I think a correct memory... still here, but barely. Go M's! Best of good fortunes with our new Manager, Dan (the Man) Wilson and EDGAR MARTINEZ, stepping into the Hitting Coach position. In my opinion, this is a proper step, though perhaps too late for 2024.

Another big part of the collapse of the Pilots is the fact that the owner was Bud Selig who lived in Milwaukee. He had promised an MLB team to that city. After spring training before the second season the players thought they were heading to Seattle but the busses and trucks all turned and went to Milwaukee. The owner soon became the Commissioner of the MLB and whenever he came to Seattle the fans let him know how we felt about him.

As the series goes on, it gets much more interesting, emotional, and dramatic. I would say episodes 3-5 are definitely the best (they're all good, but that is the most interesting part of the story by far). In my opinion, the first is probably the weakest as its the least engaging in terms of actually caring about players and storylines. It definitely gets much better from here.

This series is an epic production. The Mariners are eminently loveable. One of the biggest reasons Mariners fans could love them through all of their downtimes is a testament to Dave Niehaus, the Voice of the Mariners from the first game in 1977, to his death in 2010. There was never a dull moment in a game with Niehaus announcing.

There's a 3hr 30 min full version but I'm glad you guys are doing one segment at a time 😅 Also, cutting a baseball allows it to move in very weird ways. Hold a cut ball with the cut on the left and the ball will dance right.

The idea with the front of the batter's box being moved forward is that a curveball tends to curve the most at the very end, right before the strike zone, so if you can hit the ball slightly earlier you have an advantage. Of course any pitcher seeing this should just throw a fastball and laugh at you...

I think I've some summaries like this for specific teams before but what you said at 10:07 inspired me to make sure everything is in one place. Here is a complete history of all Major League Baseball teams' locations and names since 1903. That is the year of the first World Series and no teams folded after that point. Prior to the American League forming in 1901, teams and leagues were popping into and out of existence and changing names every other year to the point of total chaos. The only thing you really need to know from that time is that the National League formed in 1876 and the founding teams that still remain are the teams we now call the Cubs and Braves and the ones that started between 1876 and 1903 were the ones we now call the Giants, Phillies, Pirates, Reds, Dodgers, and Cardinals. Also, the American League had some growing pains its first 3 years but stabilized after 1903. (All data is from Baseball reference. It looks like some teams from 1900 to 1920 also changed nicknames a bit and I think Wikipedia has some conflicting info but this should work for most people.) National League Braves - Boston Nationals 1903-06, Boston Doves 1907-10, Boston 1911, Boston Braves 1912-35, Boston Bees 1936-40, Boston Braves 1941-52, Milwaukee Braves 1953-65, Atlanta Braves 1966-Present Dodgers - Brooklyn Superbas 1903-10, Brooklyn Dodgers 1911-15, Brooklyn Robins 1916-31, Brooklyn Dodgers 1932-57, Los Angeles Dodgers 1958-Present Cubs - Chicago 1903, Chicago Cubs 1904-Present Reds (shortened from Red Stockings prior to 1903) - Cincinnati Reds 1903-Present Giants - New York Giants 1903-57, San Francisco Giants 1958-Present Phillies (short for Philadelphians) - Philadelphia Phillies 1903-Present Pirates - Pittsburgh Pirates 1903-Present Cardinals - St. Louis Cardinals 1903-Present Mets (short for Metropolitans) - New York Mets 1962-Present Nationals - Montreal Expos 1969-2004, Washington Nationals 2005-Present Padres - San Diego Padres 1969-Present Rockies - Colorado Rockies 1993-Present Marlins - Florida Marlins 1993-2011, Miami Marlins 2012-Present Diamondbacks - Arizona Diamondbacks 1998-Present Brewers - Seattle Pilots (AL) 1969, Milwaukee Brewers (AL) 1970-97, Milwaukee Brewers (NL) 1998-Present American League Yankees - New York Highlanders 1903-12, New York Yankees 1913-Present Red Sox - Boston Americans 1903-07, Boston Red Sox 1908-Present White Sox - Chicago White Sox 1903-Present Guardians (for a time named after player/manager Napoleon "Nap" Lajoie) - Cleveland Napoleons 1903-05, Cleveland Naps 1906-14, Cleveland Indians 1915-2021, Cleveland Guardians 2022-Present Tigers - Detroit Tigers unchanged since 1894 Orioles (as mentioned in the video, originally called the Milwaukee Brewers) - St. Louis Browns 1903-53, Baltimore Orioles 1954-Present Athletics (A's) - Philadelphia Athletics 1903-54, Kansas City Athletics 1955-67, Oakland Athletics 1968-2024, Who the Hell Knows What 2025 on Twins - Washington Senators 1903-04, Washington Nationals 1905-56 (still informally referred to as the Senators), Washington Senators 1957-60, Minnesota Twins 1961-Present Rangers - Washington Senators 1961-71, Texas Rangers 1972-Present Angels - Los Angeles Angels 1961-64, California Angels 1965-96, Anaheim Angels 1997-04, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim [eyeroll] 2005-15, Los Angeles Angels 2016-Present Royals - Kansas City Royals 1969-Present Mariners - Seattle Mariners 1977-Present Blue Jays - Toronto Blue Jays 1977-Present Rays - Tampa Bay Devil Rays 1998-2007, Tampa Bay Rays 2008-Present Astros - Houston Colt .45s (NL) 1962-64, Houston Astros (NL) 1965-2012, Houston Astros (AL) 2013-Present

1. Pitchers love having some inperfection on the smooth leather of a baseball, that is why baseballs are throw out of play whenever they hit the dirt. A thumbtack can cut into the leather and give pitchers an advantage, in that they can make the ball curve and act differently than a smooth ball that only has the uniform stiches...

I moved from Scotland to the Seattle area in 1970, but I had visited a few times before that. Actually saw a few Pilots games in Sick's. Although we have never really had any "great" teams, the 2001 M's tied the major league record of 116 wins. Didn't get to the World Series though. Had some great players over the years. Alvin Davis, Junior, Randy Johnson, Edgar Martinez and a pre steroid A-Rod to name a few. I remember being at the Kingdome when there were more people on the field than in the stands. Then they got Ken Griffey, jr (aka "Junior" or "the kid") and attendence started to get better. The M's actually had Ken Griffey senior on the team for a while. One night in 1990 the Griffeys became the first and so far only father and son to hit back-to-back home runs in a major league game. It was an away game against the then named California Angels so we had to settle for seeing it on the telly. At least the Mariners have been (mostly) entertaining to watch since moving to Safeco/T-Mobile.

24:50 I'm sure that someone has mentioned this, but altering the surface of the baseball (ie sandpaper, tack, nail file etc) would cause the ball to move more due to the imbalance in air resistance. It would move more in the direction of the disturbance I believe. Movement is crucial in getting strikeouts and generating weak contact, but also may lead to a lack of control and walks.

The home plate collision you saw in 1985 did not lead to the rule that banned catchers from blocking the plate. The change happened after a collision in 2011 or 2012. The catcher was an all-star player named Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants. In a game against the Florida Marlins, he tore his achilles tendon, missed the remainder of the season, and was never the same player after that. The guy who injured him was Chris Coghlan who started receiving hate mail containing threats of bodily harm.

Scuffs or cuts on the baseball alter its aerodynamics which can be exploited for extra movement by the pitcher. This is part of the reason the ball is replaced when it hits the dirt (the other being that someone a long time ago got hit in the head and died because the ball was covered in mud and they couldn't see it).

Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis (where the Twins won both the 1987 & 1991 World Series Championships, but the Minnesota Vikings remain un-championed!) into the 2010s, now having their own grass field stadiums), Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, Bush Stadium in St Louis, Cincinnati, Seattle, Houston, ... all had astroturf, multi purpose stadiums. After Baltimore build Camden Park for JUST baseball (GRASS), every teams ownership wanted their own baseball only facility, and of course wanted taxpayers to pay for them, threatening to move to another city if voters refused.

All purpose stadiums were very popular for about 30 years MLB teams and NFL teams as well as college teams could use them and really get their money’s worth. Nearly every city in the 70s has multi purpose stadiums.

The teams prior in Seattle were minor league teams. Until the Pilots in 1969. The first Cleveland Indians season, as the Indians, was in 1915. The Rainiers, & Indians name moved to 2 Washington cities as a minor league baseball team. Rainiers went to the nearby city of Tacoma, and Indians went to Spokane.

My friends this video has kind of give you the importance of money in American sports. Can't make enough where you are or get a nice financial deal from the city well there is always another city ready to step up. Also a lot of the multipurpose stadiums had artificail turf and the Kingdom had a roof so no weather issue there. But as teams got tired of their old homes and realized that new stadiums meant more mpney baseball and football owners realized it was even more money if you didn't share a home. Another thing is way back say mid-1900s if a team moved or new team was created and they went to a city that had sometype of team from years gone by then a lot of time people wanted thar old name back like early 1990s Milwaukee Brewers to the fresh from Seattle 1971 Milwaukee Brewers

Speaking of the Mariners, if you ever watch videos on the best MLB players you need to also include Ichiro Suzuki. That dude is as much a legend as Griffey and Johnson.

Actually most hitters like the stickem, they would rather the pitchers have more control and not get smoked by a baseball. but putting groves in the baseball creates different air resistance for better breaking balls.

Here are some of the mistakes that Maury Wills made in his short tenure, in no particular order. - Submitting a lineup card with two center fielders, but no third baseman. - Walking a weak-hitting outfielder late in a game against the Angels, hoping their manager Jim Fregosi would forget to put one of his pinch hitters in. But Fregosi didn't, and that pinch hitter smacked a game-winning double. - Making the exact opposite mistake in another game, choosing not to walk Harold Baines intentionally to load the bases and set up a force play at any base. Baines also hit a game-winning double. Later, Wills had a meltdown in the locker room, claiming nobody had ever heard of Baines. - Holding up a game for ten minutes to search for a pinch hitter of his own. - Calling for a reliever, although he had nobody warming up in the bullpen. - Another incident involving Rick Honeycutt - Wills makes a mound visit to talk to him about something. Wills leaves to the dugout, then comes back out, claiming he forgot something. This was considered a second mound visit in an inning, so by rule, Honeycutt had to leave the game. - Wills fined a pitcher that he believed slammed down a batting helmet in the dugout after a poor performance. He later found out it was somebody else, but refused to rescind the fine. - Speaking of former catcher Brad Gulden, he was set to bat in a game against Cleveland, who make a pitching change. Wills is deep in conversation with player Julio Cruz, so he doesn't notice the change. Gulden gets a good count on him, a 3-1 count, and Wills finally notices the pitching change. Furiously, he removes Gulden *while the at-bat is still going on* because he believes Gulden "showed him up" by not telling him. - Lastly, with a story involving Cruz: Wills tells Cruz he'll be the starting shortstop "permanently." Within twenty-four hours, he's placed at second base. His managerial record was 26-56, a .317 winning percentage. That is one of the worst of any manager with over fifty games in their tenure, as mentioned.

To be honest, those two baseball cards are probably worth $3 instead of $2, because of the mistake.
