Vanessa is the only one in this series that is actually being honest and seems to be a genuinely nice person that you could go down to the pub with. Also in this episode hers was the only one I'd eat based on appearance because it had that comfort food look about it :)

I think they should consider the mum's making the food, but get different people to taste but they can taste too so that they get the authentic taste

Here on the East Coast Us most Shepard pies have corn. Interesting to see the differences. That one with carrots on it looked really good!

The way the camera lingered on Vanessa’s dish in the beginning completely took me out. The editing is as shady as the moms 😭

I’m going to give y’all my recipe. Diced onion and 2 cloves minced garlic; sautéed. Cook the minced meat, add salt and pepper to your liking (for me, I like quite a bit of pepper). Add an Oxo/stock cube, as well as a heaped teaspoon of marmite. Cook on a low heat. Add some vegetables (already boiled; not too firm, not too soft) - my choice is carrots and runner beans). Cut the veggies to your liking. Put the veggies in the meat. Add a bit of water and some gravy granules to give a little bit of a sauce so meat doesn’t dry out. Boil some potatoes; add a little bit of swede - mash it together with butter, milk, teaspoon of English mustard and little bit of salt. Add minced meat to dish, top with potato and put cheese. Cook for 20 mins in oven to make cheese golden!

People forget just like in the Italian episodes, some places do it differently, like how a full English would be different in wales etc.

I like the Jamaican mum as she is honest and humble, the African mum has confidence and is thoughtful. Seeing that she prepared the entirety of her dish well in terms of flavour, spice and presentation. I don't quite like the dishonesty of the British mum; clearly I know it is a thing with many British folks and their passive aggressive demeanor but really - it is very plain to see. If you wish to participate in a contest. Leave your ego and bias out the the door. It isn't about your own cooking. It's about whose made the best and decide fairly without getting butt hurt.

Traditional shepherds pie is not " spicy " this is merely modern interpretations and it shouldn't contain minced lamb only leftover roasted lamb so none of these are technically shepherds pie...but I would eat all of them and lick the plate clean 😋😋

My secret is breaking the law add some red wine, balsamic vinegar and some Worcestershire sauce and two bay leafs and make sure that you use lamb meat as well and you either or in beef or land broth boiled it down before the mash potatoes and in mash potatoes you can use sweet potatoes with spices and sour cream and Parmigiano. You use the same spice with potatoes, skin or off. I prefer mine with skin. There you go ;) and if you think it too much in the meat add more water and tomatoes paste to taste or boil it down to taste..... it sooooooo good.

At times you have to add spices to meat not only for flavour but for smell. You can tell Marian didn't use any.

When preparing mash for guests you're trying to impress, in general you want to put more butter and salt into it than you're comfortable disclosing to your guests. Shepherds pie isn't one of those dishes where the starch is just a vehicle for what's inside. In many preparations, the potato component occupies more volume than the mince. So even if your mince has great flavor development and is well seasoned and spiced, the potatoes are going to drag the whole thing down if they're bland. Don't be sleeping on those taters. You've got to have a mash that you'd be confident serving on its own, without gravy. It doesn't have to blow anyone's mind. It just has to be decent enough to enjoy. Then all the work you put into your mince won't be thrown out the window. And it's not hard to achieve, especially if you cook all the time. It's just a matter of mindfulness. Try to make really good mashed potatoes, which you probably already know how to do. Taste them to confirm and adjust as needed. Once it's good, that's what goes on your shepherds pie. A modicum of effort on the potatoes will reinforce the time and effort that goes into the payload below. Otherwise, you'll totally undermine all of that.

I am a massive fan of shepherds pie and add a shed load of seasoning and stock when cooking the meat. And I struggle to understand how minced lamb can end up chewy lol its usually so fatty that it cooks down and tenderises perfectly , if slowly cooked in the stock after browning. I was impressed with the consistency/look of the potato on all of them mine ends up a tad wet and melts into the meat and gravy. Lol i need tips!!!!
