A BR vid from a winters day back in November 1988. We see operations at Banbury complete with two signal boxes and semapore signalling including both upper quadrant and lower quadrant! We see class 47 loco hauled Inter-City services, a class 50 on a Worcester service, NSE DMU's on the Oxford locals and Chiltern Line services along with a 37 on a freight train. Plus a class 156 Super Sprinter on a test working, complete with cable's hanging out of the windows! If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

Big thanks for posting, great memories. Wonderful variety of coaching stock back then in the Eighties. I would just love to be sat behind a Hoover on a New Street-Reading trip right now!

I think this is the only one i have done on a Birmingham. Yes, i've noticed when looking at vids for upload there was quite a lot of variety on the coaching stock front in this & others i have from the 1980s. It all got a bit uniform by the 1990s, just in time to be smashed apart for privitatision!

The days of Franken-rakes. Good to see the MkI restaurant and buffets in the coaching mix.

Yes, there was a good mix of coaches in the cross country fleet in these days.

The signalman in the north box was probably Mr Wilson. He'd been there for many years having moved from the south box many years earlier. I visited the box in '84 one Friday evening, it was fascinating watching him move around the quite large room, constantly pulling levers and operating telegraph instruments. There is a RU-vid video of the north box being operated.

Thanks for the tip, i will check that out! I used to sign the road here, i remember trying not to to trip up on all the wires one dark night, my guard & i were going to get out ballast train out of a siding for an engineering job at Aynho...... happy days!

Awesome video which brought back some good memories as I worked in Beckonsfield in the early '90s and remember all the mad combinations of DMU's on the London trains with the odd loco-hauled replacement thrown in!

Yes, in the early 90s the DMUs ware fading fast and Marylebone Shed (remember that? Now flats) moved heaven and earth to make up serviceable trains. There was a short rake of NSE coaches that ran with a 47 as the DMUs were failing and others due works visits which were don't as the Turbos were due to replace them. Plus an NSE Banbury Flyer, a full NSE set of coaches that ran to & from Paddington via the Chilterns in the peaks. I will have to upload some film i have of them....

Most enjoyable 👍 It's fine to reminisce, if you grew up in this era. Thankful for the huge progress made to the railway, to date. I visited Banbury during one of the ’Network Day’ back in early 90’s, could travel for £5 anywhere in Network Railcard area for the day. Spent a few hours watching the diverse variety of traffic passing through. I hope 🤞you have some similar footage.

That north bound bay, which is now filled in, doesn't appear to have had a number even back then.The only passenger train I've ever seen use it was a Wrexham and Shropshire during some disruption and it was turned around there, 67 on the north end as I recall.It was only really 2 and 3 that saw a lot a use.1 was mainly terminating services and 4(the old 4) Oxford locals although the ones here use the main platforms.

Yes, i never saw much in the bay. They might have stabled the odd DMU there at night in later years.....

Some variation in train lengths on the Cross_Countries; the first one was only 6 coaches, then 47597 had 11 (probably the Newcastle - Poole) ,then 47637 had 9. Of course, an Eastfield engine wasn't quite the scoop it would have been a few years earlier, but 47637 was of course the imposter as it was at Crewe by then. Also interesting to see a 50 still on a Cross-Country/Birmingham service. And some mixed 108/115 formations on the Marylebone of course, as they tried t o find enough stock serviceable to keep it going.

Yes, Cross Country Inter-City always had hand-me-down stock....And The Chilterns had yet to have it's route modernisation, indeed there was still talk of shutting Marylebone at this time......The semaphores and signal boxes here were only abolished a couple of years back!

I bet if I was around in the late 1980's (I'm 27) that I'd have enjoyed all these lovely looking trains more than some of today's trains. (As of 11:14 when typing this in) Was it common for a 11x car and a 10x car to be part of a 2-car train? Just seen it. I look at Class 57's now and on RU-vid and think 'If only money was spent on a major refurbishment on the Mark 2's and 47's to make them 57's then XC travel wouldn't have been so problematic. The Voyagers I enjoy where possible but I bet a number of passengers would have preferred a Mark 2 - more table seats for a start not just ample capacity!
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 4 года назад
The Voyagers are far too short for Cross Country operations. If we still had hauled coaches it would be easy to increase the length to 8 or 9 carriages without any more fuss than a shunt move in a depot! The old DMU's could couple to most other DMU's regardless of the builder. There were certain ones that could only couple within class (the class 127s on the St Pancras to Bedford route for instance) but generally they work all ways up!

I’m 38, so I do remember these trains as a kid. Especially the class 47s on intercity cross country services. They were notoriously slow but offered direct services to brilliant places. I’m originally from Northamptonshire so visited Banbury several times

Yes, the place had real charachter back then. Mind you, you had to be carefull walking about the tracks with all those wires about, very easy to trip over when going to pick up any stabled ballast trains..... lol

A sad railway in terminal decline
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 4 года назад
But improvements were just around the corner, Network SouthEast worked it's magic on the Chiltern Line and Inter-City improved their Cross Country services to all MkII stock or HSTs although the signalling lasted until recently.
@MSmifffy
@MSmifffy 4 года назад
Great video with a taste of the new order too. Was it me or were the local hauled trains pulling mainly 1st class stock. Pretty much every coach (guard and baggage vans aside) appeared to have a yellow band below the roof line?
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 4 года назад
I think it's a trick of the light. Each Inter-City train has 1 or 2 First Class coaches and a buffet (red stripe) the rest are unmarked. On the blue & grey coaches the line is blue and on the later IC livery it is a sort of brown colour (same as the bottom part of the coach) but the light reflecting off it bleaches it out a bit.

What route would the 50 on the worcester service have took?
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 4 года назад
Yes, thinking about it, it is too far north of Oxford to be a Worcester service. More than likely a then to be a Cross Country Inter-City service.
