Another BR vid, this time from the North East, Newcastle one Friday evening in summer 1989. Seen are HSTs in various liveries, Trans-Pennine class 47s hauled trains, a bit of freight, parcel trains, real DMUs & Pacers some in GWR chocolate & cream from their short lived time in the West Country, all in all a bit of variety. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

Its amazing how the HST has aged so well, the new headlights have obviously given them a fresh face but the overall design of the cabs by Kenneth Grange and the smooth lines of their mk3 coaches still looks modern today even when compared to newer trains.

Neat consecutive pair of 37046 and 37048. The way you zoom in on the numbers as they pass is very useful, it's just like virtual trainspotting. Nice to hear Pacers (did I say nice to hear Pacers?) with the orginal TL11 engines too.,
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 5 лет назад
When i first started filming i didn't zoom in but then i wanted to underline those i videoed (yes, very 'trainspotting' i know! lol) so if i could read the number through the view finder i was happy and made notes when i got home (no waiting to develope the film like cine). I stll aim to get the numbers now or have a mate ready with pen & notebook, back to basics, can't go wrong with that!

Lovely selection of old school BR traction and stock, but.... arrrrgh Pacers! My local line became infested with them when I was about 7, even at that age I could tell they were a cheap knock-off (the fact that they shared so many parts- including the 142s original double folding doors seen here- with the then-ubiquitous Leyland National bus didn’t help). V nice vid all the same. Thanks for sharing. 👍🏻
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus

Like them or loathe them they are part of railway history, and they helped keep lines open back in the 1980s. Don't forget the Serpell report, the DFT were still trying to do a Beeching and shut most of the network down in that decade. BR's prefered DMU replacement was the class 210 (some shots of which i do have on vid!) which was a diesel version of a 317 EMU (same bodyshell) but was too expesive for the money available to BR at the time, money wasn't so free & easy then so the Pacers were the answer at the time. BR of course managed to find some middle ground between them & the class 210 which was the Sprinter family, at least they had bogies! But i filmed just about everything that moved railway wise to some degree, locos were my main interest but i shot what was around where ever i was filming. It's all history now.....

lol! You'll notice some of the ones shown here were in GWR chocolate & cream. They were new to the West Country but had already been moved on due to excessive noise + wheel damage on the tight branch line curves! The Western Region obviously shared your view!!!

When the railways were still interesting. Loco hauled regional trains. Platforms with vans and full brake coaches at the, for the Newspaper, parcels or mail trains.
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 5 лет назад
It seems each generation the railway "improve" things but actually life gets worse. New trains with hard seats, short trains some of which couple together but are still 2 trains that cannot be walked through, mail traffic on roads, more freight on roads, more contractors working for the railways telling you you "cannot do that" re photos, videoing or just hanging about looking at the trains. Life was better under BR but they were underfunded compared to today. Even then bits of BR made money-InterCity, Freight & parcels and even NSE in its last year as a complete entity! But such is the chaos of life............

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Yes - the Leyland engines broke down too much - think they were also paired with multi gear gear boxes. The Cummins kit was similar or the same to that fitted to early Sprinters
@AndreiTupolev
@AndreiTupolev 3 года назад
It was the gearbox that was the problem, the L10 is the same as used in Leyland Olympians. Plus BR were concerned that with Leyland ending bus production spares might become an issue, so they chose Cummins/Voith for commonality with Sprinters

12:56 Nice to see a mixed livery 125 with all BR MK3 coaches in their original BR Blue Grey livery amazing to think that in 1989 these carriages were untouched since these were originally built between 1975-1982. 1 power car in BR IC swallow livery. And the other in BR IC Executive livery 1989 (two years before I was born) a time when mixed livery trains were very common. Ah how did the comuters cope with no buffet car with no nasty British Rail coffee and over priced chocolate confectionary sweets crisps snacks and Pure Leith reinvented British Rail sarnies?
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 5 лет назад
There was a buffet car, third from the end. The one with a red stripe above the windows marked 'Resturant-Buffet 125' ! The buffet food wasn't so bad on 125's, i remember going on an All Line Rover with my Dad in 1981 and travelled on HST's quite a bit and they had nice hot toasted sandwich's. I believe they were the first stock to have microwave ovens on board as well although as usual anything on the railway always cost's more, the claim-'that we need staff to sellit', as if shops & cafe's don't? !!!! Never buy food on a station, there's bound to be a shop nearby where you can buy food & drink at half the price on a station!

@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 5 лет назад
I never spotted that before. I can only assume the buffet coach had a defect and rather than fail the whole train it was knocked out of the set allowing it to run a full day's diagram and not have a whole load of train cancellations that day. Unlike these wonderfull IEPs that are entering service, each set cannot be split unless in works, so one dud coach = whole train out of service! Some progress!
