After Martin Schanche stopped as an active competition driver around 2001-2002, he started full time as an 1 man company into building and modifiying engines and gearboxes for other competition drivers. He still loves to spend some time in his workshop, at first floor of his private home in the Oslo region, where he lives with his wife, at the age of 78 as of 2023. He is a bit more laidback these days compared to his race track years) He sometimes shows up in some comercials for local companies.

You can see how these cars are a step closer to the modern cars, more balanced in corners, sequential box, rule maker meddling, similar designs, slightly less ragged and taking similar lines. 70s, 80s, 90s were the heyday both in crazy engineering and wild racing.

Atleast there was always action and drama when Schanche was involved, whether he won or lost. I think that was the attraction, the guy and his cars were explosive.

Rallycross is not the same after Schanche retiered. He was and will allways be mr rallycross

A few weeks ago, on Estering in Germany, this original Escort was driven, only as showact, a few rounds by a privat driver. It reminds me of the glory days. Very nice.

Schanche was fiercely hated by Finnish rallycross fans back in the 80's, because of his wild antics on track and his bitter rivalry with Alamäki. He seemed like such a dirty player and sore loser back then, but it's nice to see he has a lot of self-irony and a sense of humor too. Maybe it's just that he put his heart into it, and I think that it's that kind of spirit we need more of in today's motorsport.

what about this weight penalty anyway? class rules at max weight, engine displacement, N/A or Turbocharged wheelbase maybe. So what all this weight nonsens? Let the best be the best at a given car spec. ??

ridiculous all those weight penalties. I watched Martin in this car at Valkenswaard in the Netherlands. As if no weight was added. But still, all those limitations and regulations, gettn sick of that. Lets go for it, the fastest the best engineered the best driver wins. If you cant cope with it, stay home or seek other lower division of racing.

Schanche was a real bad ass, i rember once he was stepped out of his car and walked on the circuit. Because he was pushed, real loser, Will Gollop is and was so much better
