The fact that the bee gees didn't get in, not even in honourable mentions is unbelievable. The bee gees are widely considered as pioneers in music, with thier influences spreading wide and far. Possibly the most important band our wonderful country has ever produced
Easy Beats, but no Johnny O'Keefe? The Bee Gees for sure should have been in there along with Daddy Cool, Dragon, Little River Band and maybe even Leo Sayer and Marcia Hines.
@@rhiannonmarks7995 I thought that too but I’d say “Best song” doesn’t necessarily equate to record sales. The record sales list would be called “most popular songs”. There has been some really crappy songs in the charts over the years.
@@davidbleus3053 Well, going by your theory and opinion of what constitutes as "best" songs, it's always going to be a purely subjective list then. Objectively, the "best" would have to be about record sales. As that would then be coming from the vast majority of the population and what they liked and bought.
The Easybeats were huge in England in the 60s. The 2 guitarist George Young and Harry Vanda wrote all the songs for the Easybeats and then for the lead singer Stevie Wright after the broke up. Vanda and Young were the most influential songwriters and producers in Australian music in the 70's and 80's. With smash hits like Stevie Wright Blackeyed Bruiser, Guitar Band and the epic Evie i, ii and iii now there is a song. They also produced a lot of Australia's big bands, including George's little brother's band AC/DC. Vanders and Young were also mentioned in Dire Straits song Sultans of Swing they are the guitar George, and Harry doesn't mind. They also had a band that apparently was big in the UK in the late 70's Flash in the Pan. George also played base for AC/DC at the start. If your looking for a song it would have to be Evie i,ii and iii. About a man who meets a girl they fall it love and she dies in child birth. The Australian rock song.
I was at friends on Good Friday and the had random music videos playing on the outside TV and Ted Mullary Gang Jump in my car came on another Vanda/Young classic along with love is in the air or Yesterdays Hero JPY. For this reason I always say Friday on my mind is Australia's greatest song because not just a good song but the legacy of Vanda and Young. Saw a great doco on them I think it was called blood and thunder the Australian soind
I included Evie 1, 2 and 3 on a video jukebox when I was with Nightlife music and had to remove it because that was all that was being played. 1 coin got 3 songs, so the publicans complained. The fact that on most sites we were taking the coins for a free jukebox seemed to be lost on most of the publicans. The fact that everyone in the pub bought more beer to hear it being played seemed to be lost on my business partner. That was how we sold the juke box. People stayed longer in the pub to hear their song being played.
Firstly, Kay San breaks the rules here - Jimmy Barnes was already number 5 (with a better song). Secondly, it's not even the most iconic song about Vietnam - that belongs to Only Nineteen. What about Torn (Natalie Imbroglia), Shine (Newsboys), Hot Potato (Wiggles), Physical (Olivia Newton John), Staying Alive (Beegees), or Run to Paradise (Chiorboys)
Absolutely amazed that the Seekers did not get a mention."We are Australian" should be and will be our national anthem if we get a chance to vote on it
Gotye is an Australian citizen but was born in Belgium and moved to Australia at 2 years old. The female singer Kimbra in the Someone that I used to know is a New Zealand artist. Crowded House is considered a New Zealand Band in New Zealand.
Tim Finn considers Crowded House an Australian band. They were formed in Melbourne by Finn and Hester and theyvrecruited Deymour. Most of the early songs are about Melbourne too, as all 3 resided there for years. Their last gig was also on the steps of the Opera house not in New Zealand. How would anyone consider them a Kiwi band, are the 2 Aussies irrelevant and the fact they firmed in Melbourne. Neil Finn has told an Australian newspaper that Crowded House was a proud Australian band and most of its songs were inspired in Melbourne.
As for Goyte, he is Australian, he immigrated at 2 years old and speaks with an Australian accent and lives in Sydney. . I'm sure he doesn't consider himself Belgian.
@duncanmackenzie4076 they said the same to nz papers... unsurprisingly lol. 50% kiwis 50% Australians.. but the songs were written by the kiwis 🤫 they name drop te awamutu of all places lol.
@@sammacculloch446 it takes 1 man to wrote a song, but a band to compose it. Crowded House were w Australians and Kiwi formed in Melbourne where they were based until their farewell gig..mostvof their hits were written about Melbourne. If anything you could claim they are a hybrid Australian/NZ band. But they are classified as Australian.
Can really feel those Belgian roots from the first two years of his life coming through. I suppose it was originally sung in Flemish, then later translated for commercial radio yeah...
They would be more recognisable if you showed non live versions. I'm an Aussie and don't know many of these songs. Triple j isn't everyone's cup of tea
Nice and well-meaning compilation, but this list is simply not the Top 30 Australian Songs of All Time. The age of the creator has massively skewed the selection. What about one of the many iconic songs from the Bee Gees, Little River Band, Ross Wilson, The Seekers, Daddy Cool (Eagle Rock), Helen Reddy (I am Woman), The Masters Apprentices, Russell Morris (The Real Thing), Billy Thorpe, John Paul Young - the list goes on and on.....
There is a beautiful video on You Tube of ‘Great Southern Land’ with shots of Australian landscape. ACDC played a lunchtime concert at my Sydney high school in in1973 or 1974. Cost 50 cents to go into the school hall to see them.
Sounds like you paid way too much to see that mob. If someone offered to pay me to go I'd still knock them back. Absolute rubbish where every 'song' sounds exactly the same imho. p.s. I'm old.
never heard of no 27 but these songs were only voted on radio station Triple J there are a few other lists that disagree with this list. They are missing How's that by Sherbert, Love is in the air by John Paul Young for starters. As for Crowded House well the band is a mixture of Aussies & Kiwis lol and the Easy Beats were all born in the U.K and in Holland but formed their band in Sydney N.S.W the Poms tried to claim them back in the 60's as their own same with the Bee Gees lol.
It is okay that Jimmy Barnes gets in the list twice, and at No 1 with Cold Chisel......but Khe San ? An early hit song that helped Cold Chisel break into the big time, but they must have almost 20 better songs. lol
John Farnham suffered oral cancer and had to have massive jaw surgery. Sadly he has not been able to perform since, but is cancer free. He will always be a national treasure to us, and you DEFINITELY need to check out "You're The Voice". Incredible musically and the message hits hard.
@@Alunticstalkedme4072 you are so correct they are just lucky to be there. Formed by the magic of brotherly competition. The Finns quintessential kiwi. A place on the map Melbourne or any other is completely irrelevant.
@@donaldstewart444 The band wasn't formed by the Finn brothers, Neil formed the band with Hester who was a replacement drummer for Split Enz. Tim Finn only came on board for a future album, get your facts straight. A band formed in Melbourne by 2/3's Australian members kind of sounds Australian. Their farewell c9ncert was also on the steps of the Sydney Opera house. Neil Finn is the primary songwriter, you obviously have never been in a band and created music before if you believe one person is solely responsible for creating music. Tim Pearce a celebrated session guitarist also created many of their iconic guitar riffs too. As an example, Roger Waters is nothing without the talents of Wright, Gilmour and Mason, just listen to his solo records after he left Pink Floyd.
@@Alunticstalkedme4072 my facts are straight your inferences are not. You want it to be an Aussie band, great be in your list of Aussie bands, but it just wasn’t.
its funny they still call her aussie when she has lived in england for the last 35 years and all her hits were written and produced by british producers yet an kiwi in australia is an automatic aussie if they sing or act
@@bodybalanceU2 well both she and her sister are part of that myth propagation. I could just about throw up every time i see some music show talking about the 'aussie music icon/legend' (usually by Dani but we don't see much of her these days either). No its the media calling her an aussie but she definitely is an aussie, she's just never been really popular with Aussies. unless its the gay community.
All good songs, but there were some massive omissions in this list - artists with significant international careers eg Savage Garden, Bee Gees, Delta Goodrem, Air Supply, LRB, Empire of the Sun and Wolfmother for starters!
Jimmy barnes=legend INXS=legends Cold chisel=legends (Jimmy barnes lead singer) AC/DC=legends John Farnham=double legend And yes silverchair were 13yrs old when they wrote there first hits songs and by 15 had taken on the world. They basically won a competition to record a song and that is how they got started. It would have been good for him to name a few new Australian artist like The kid laroi and five seconds of summer
Do yourself a favour and listen to the whole songs. This is an interesting choice for songs ,but would be contentious for most Aussies, lots of icons missing
A little clue while you're hunting. The guy who sang " Working Class Man " is the same guy that came in at number one. His name's Jimmy Barnes. He does a duet with Farnham called " Something is wrong , with my baby ". I thik you'll like that. Like someome else said, check out Eagle Rock. Also, going back a little bit, check out a band called " Healing Force " with their song " Golden Miles ".
Crowded House is an Australian band. Even Finn says it is. "Neil Finn has told an Australian newspaper that Crowded House was a proud Australian band and most of its songs were inspired in Melbourne."
The two songs for me that were missing from this list that you reviewed were: 1."I was only 19" by Redgum (John Shuman) This song has become an anthem across Australia and in particular to the service personal in the Australian Defence Force, both past and present. 2. "I am Australian" by The Seekers. This song should be our National Anthem. It is more relevant to our multicultural society that our current Anthem as Australia has one of the most successful integrations of cultures within the world without sacrificing the heritage of these who have gone before us, whether we arrived in AUS 6 years ago, or 60 years ago, or 200 years ago (like my ancestors), or 60,000 years ago as the first nations did.
I reckon you’d recognise more if they played the chorus of popular studio versions of these songs, some of these live versions are not doing the originals justice,
Songs which mention Australia or Australian experiences here get a big boost up the ratings. Surely Eagle Rock should be in the Top 30 if not the Top 10.
Such a gateway drug to annoying my kids this morning with a playlist down memory lane! (Glad Vika and Linda were in the Paul Kelly clip… they are the harmonies for a great many versions of classics!)
Did you that you weren’t aware of The Angels. Their stage presence and long list rock hits can’t be denied. Still playing, minus the Late Doc Neeson. 👌👌👌
to ignore the seekers and savage garden in this list is absolute blasphemy. especially when cold chisel and jimmy barnes both get mentioned when its one and the same, really.
Well Im 52 and I play the first 2 in my Gen X Party Rock band.. Some of these bands were discovered (like Tame Impala, Vance Joy) through Triple J (ABC) Youth Radio Station.
Hard to formulate a top 30 of all time with so many artists to choose from. Subjective choices will only ever satisfy so many people. Even the choice of song for the selected artist is debatable. Three of the biggest acts in the world of the 70s don't get a look in here, not even under honourable mentions - Little River Band, Olivia Newton-John and Helen Reddy. I also regard the BeeGees as an Australian act because they came to Australia at a very young age and set up their career here before returning to the UK when they had their first number 1 hit. Andy Gibb is definitely Australian and had 3 or 4 huge worldwide hits without a mention here. You Am I, Aussie Crawl and Air Supply also miss out. Richard Clapton's Girls on the Avenue is also a classic, as is Slipping away by Max Merritt and the Meteors. 1927 and Noiseworks also had some classic hits. As I said, it is all subjective and there were only 30 spots available. Under the circumstances that was a decent list.
Top thirty Aussie songs , thirty ,I think that number wants reducing dramatically, five at the most ,and I'm struggling to think of them ,best bit of music to come out of Australia,is the theme tune to the t.v. series ,Skippy .🇬🇧
@@pucknhusker9426 nick cave ,mega star ,and underrated more in his homeland ,than in the u.k. u.s.a. but there's talent in Australia, but I don't think they promote themselves enough to the outside world ,but ,here's hoping .👍
Mental as Anything - Live it up and with all respect Crowded House is the biggest band ever to come out of Melbourne but they are Kiwi s same goes for Icehouse
There's something missing from this list. Women! Who could ignore someone like Judith Durham, Helen Reddy, Renee Geyer, Christine Anu, Deborah Conway, Tones and I. That's just without thinking about it for long. Ridiculous list
. Funny how the Bee Gees don't even get a mention . Little River Band . Air Supply . Olivia Newton John . Hoodoo Gurus . The Loved Ones . Sherbet . Richard Clapton . Mental As Anything .Johnny O'Keefe . Normie Rowe . Helen Reddy . Axiom . I must be getting old .
Tim Finn and Mark Seymore are Kiwi's. Not Australians. The Easy beats we're, Vander, a Dutchman and Young? Yes, George Young is Angus and Malcom from AC/DC's older brother, English.
@@peterdawes1868 yeah from Scotland not England You are completely wrong the only correct thing you said was Tim Finn is a Kiwi Mark Seymour is Australian and the Young brothers emigrated to Australia from Scotland not England how are you this dim
What's obvious here is that an Aussie's take on the top songs is very different to a UK persons. Will be interesting to see what the Canadian's take is on their reaction. As someone who loves Aussie music I thought the original choice was poo. But as I said on their, I'm not Aussie, these aren't my songs. Sure loads of Aussies don't like song of the songs we love the most.
Paul Kelly being so lowly regarded in this list is a Nincompoopery beyond logic. Only one Aussie song has a day named after it! _"How to Make the Gravy"_ (December 21)
This person have not heard of a lot of these songs and really only comments if he has heard this song or not... I might as well just watch the original video he is suppose to critique.
Considering you come across as someone who's really into music, I'm extremely puzzled with the high numbers of songs you've never heard and famous artists you never knew were Australian. 🤔 No offence, but every famous artist or band who are British were well known to me as being British. Some of the greatest talent in music came from the UK, especially in the 80s, 90s and into the 2000s.
unguarded moment is a much better song by the church, us forces by the oils, Cold Chisel Khe Sahn is a worthy number 1, got the right ACDC and Angels songs too but Eagle Rock should have been included and Crowded House are Kiwis
You could have included many more Australian songs/bands. But for all who have served, including current, in our armed forces and those who have given their all for our country, I was only 19 by Redgum stands out. Always gives me a tear in my eye everytime it is heard.
