The league cup is held every summer from late July to mid August, MLS and Liga MX both pause their season for the tournament. The league cup has 47 team participants 29 from MLS and 18 from Liga MX. The 2 champions of each league from the previous season get a bye to the knockout round. The other 45 teams are split into 15 groups of 3. In the group stage a win is 3 point, if there is a tie after 90 minutes each team get 1 point and it goes straight to penalties and the winner of that gets an additional point. The top two teams in the group advanced to the knockout round. The winner of each group gets to host the first knockout round game, and starting in the round of 16 the host is determined by the previous season supporters shield standings (which ever team had the most points at the end of the season, because we have playoffs this is the “trophy” that teams get for winning the regular season, although the MLS cup is still the primary trophy and most people forget about the shield winners after the regular season ends). If 2 Liga MX team play it will be a a designated neutral site. During the knockout round after 90 minutes it goes straight to penalties. The teams that make the final and the winner of the 3rd place game qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League.

Interesting the reply that no relegations or promotions will ever happen. I can see where you're coming from due to the enormous amounts of money that are paid for the franchises. However, if the MLS is serious it will have to happen one day!! Perhaps when Messi has retired he may very well advocate this!

This was actually Inter Miami's 4th game of the tournament. They previously defeated Cruz Azul (Liga MX), Atlanta United FC, and Orlando City SC. They will be facing Charlotte FC in the Quarterfinals. As for the Leagues Cup, this is the third edition of it, but first under the new format. The new format now include all 47 teams across the MLS and Mexico's Liga MX with all 77 games being held in the U.S. and Canada (as all MLS teams and their stadiums will be the hosts for the tournament). All teams, with the exception of LAFC and Pachuca (Liga MX)- due to winning the 2022 MLS Cup and 2022 Apertura respectively (they both automatically qualified for the Round of 32), were placed into 15 groups of 3. For the group stage, teams played one match against each team in their group. Regulation wins were worth three points and regulation losses are zero points. Matches tied after 90 minutes advanced to a penalty shoot-out, where the winner earned two points and the loser earned one. The two finalists and third place team will earn berths for the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup, with the winners automatically advancing to the Champions Cup round of 16. Hope this helps!

The parents of Cremaschi, the 18 year old, are Argentinian. Ben Crem has been called up by the USA U19 team and has been in camp with the Argentina U20 team. Besides the three designated players each MLS team can have, there is also a U22 rule that allows each team to have three young players that count little against their salary cap. It’s been a big reason for MLS going from somewhat of a “retirement league” to having a lot of good, young players from the Americas (especially Argentinians).
@HarveyWallbangers2

Ben Crem isn’t a U22, so that was an aside. He’s a homegrown player-meaning he came up through Inter Miami’s academy.

Leagues Cup features all 29 MLS teams (26 American, 3 Canadian) and all 18 Liga MX (Mexican) teams. There were 15 groups of 3 teams. The MLS champs (LAFC) and Liga MX champs (Pachuca) got a bye. The top two teams in each group advanced to a round of 32. This was Miami’s 4th game in Leagues Cup. They are in the quarterfinals. They will face an average Charlotte team. Definitely they're giving their best when playing against him, I was at the Dallas game and one of our argentine players had the best game I've ever seen him play, he was pulling off skills and nutmegs and playing incredible, he's the one that scored the free kick that bounced and no one touched. That 18 year old kid, Benjamin Cremaschi, a midfielder, has been scoring goals as well! Unfortunately for him, he's playing alongside Messi who is the center of attraction and who gets all the attention. (FYI, I'm a huge Messi fan since 2014!) FORTUNATELY for him/Cremaschi, at such a very young age, he gets to train & play alongside the one and only GOAT Messi...in the last few years of Messi's professional fútbol career! What Cremaschi can learn from Messi at such a young age is priceless...professionalism, athleticism, sportsmanship, being a team player, humility, kindness, alertness & focus while in the pitch, and maybe a few tricks here and there. These are just a few that a young player like Cremaschi can learn while playing alongside a living legend like Messi! These will serve him/Cremaschi well as he builds his professional "Fútbol"/soccer career.

Being a ‘real’ football fan is not part of the PSG ethos. Many ‘real’ football fans living in Paris don’t consider PSG to be anything but a brand, fake team and they would rather miss watching the GOAT in their own backyard to support a team with a legacy & history such as Man Utd, Barcelona and similar teams from around Europe. Quite sad really that they have no respect for their home town team. A real team and it’s fanbase would never disrespect a footballing legend irrespective of their previous resume. It’s just counter productive to supporting your team and achieves nothing. The MLS are now benefiting from that arrogance by having their eyes opened by the MESSI effect, which is incredible to watch and I for one am just really happy for them, and happy for Mr Beckham and his colleagues in achieving their long term goal of making Football massive in the USA. Y'all previously watched their first group game. They cruised to a 4-0 win against Atlanta United including 2 goals from Messi, then beat Orlando City 3-1 in the Round of 32 with, you guessed it, 2 goals from Messi. This was the Round of 16 and yes, they went straight to penalties. They actually took Damo's advice and went straight to penalties in the group stage. A regulation win was worth 3 points, a shootout win 2, a shootout loss 1, and a regulation loss 0. And, it's okay, no one heard of the leagues cup before this year either.

They are actually playing a Monthly league's Cup knockout Tournament that is why it goes to Penalties. Messi hasn't officially started in the MLS League yet.

MLS have got to step up to the plate now as Americans start to acknowledge that football rather than soccer is the World Sport and the most beautiful game on earth!! Consequently, MLS must start buying great defenders, scrap the salary caps and install promotions and relegations! Now it isn't just for the American audience but for a worldwide audience! MLS must take the changes on board and then given time it could become one of the top 5 leagues in the world. Their top 20 teams would become the Super League!! I welcome your comments.

They should make 120 new teams around the USA and Canada and put them in five divisions with relegation and the MLS being the top division obviously. Think how awesome that would be with passionate little fanbases everywhere. You could have like 35 teams in California in smaller cities and other small towns. It would be awesome

I don't think you need relegation/promotion to make a league successful. Just look at the NBA and the NFL. What makes a good league is the infrastructure, and the ability to scout young players and give them proper training at a young age. Just look at the NFL. They don't have academies. Americans just learn to play football in high school. Same for the NBA and MLB. The young players learn to play in high school. And then they go to college and play there. Then they get scouted by pro teams. The problem is that there isn't a proper pipeline for young soccer players in high schools. And there aren't proper coaches and trainers in high schools either.

Great points being made but it's not enough for the MLS just to be entertaining North American audiences. David Beckham understands this and he knows little by little big changes will eventually happen in his MLS with Messi leading that charge!!

The Leagues Cup is a new tournament consisting of MLS AND LIGA MX (Mexico) all teams participate in opening round. Games tied after full time go directly to penalty kick shootout. The winner of the shootout receives 2 points in the table. So 3 for a win 2 for a win in pks and 0 for a loss. If you lose in pks you get 1 point. 47 total teams. 29 from MLS and 18 from Liga MX. Top 2 teams from first round advance to the round of 32. Then it's a knockout format until the final.

In the group you have 3 teams, and only 1 progresses to the next round. as soon as you play knock out stage then the game goes until 90+ added minute no extra time directly to penalties.

It's funny cause when Zlatan came to MLS, he was interviewed by a lot of people, invited to a lot of shows. But Messi cannot speak in English. I'm sure there are a ton of shows wanting to invite him, and which is a bummer for them that he doesn't speak English lmao

The Leagues cup is a tournament between MLS (29 teams) and Liga MX (18 teams). Each team gets $150k per win, and the winner of the tournament gets a $2M prize. From Wikipedia - "Starting in 2023, the Leagues Cup will be contested by all MLS and Liga MX clubs, during a month-long pause in their respective seasons, with three Champions Cup berths awarded to the finalists and third-place finisher, and the winner qualifying directly to the round of 16." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leagues_Cup

Difficulty for world class attackers in the MLS is notoriously low because teams have a salary cap beyond the top 3 players on the roster. Clubs usually spend that money on skill / attacking players, e.g Messi. If you look at salaries for defenders in the MLS, attackers sometimes make more weekly than entire backline make annually, combined. When teams have front 3s that can compete with European clubs and back 5s that would struggle against 2nd or even 3rd tier European Leagues, it means there is going to be a lot of space for star players like Messi to score goals.

I think it's not just the defenders. From what I'm seeing teams seem not to use the midfield other than as a quick transition zone. There's no real pressure at defending the midfield. This makes the games more exciting, but it makes the defense work really, really hard.

Americans should stop making all sports the same. Forget about NBA and NFL. Make your soccer with the same rules as in Europe. Im sure some Oil moguls from the Middle East would want to buy clubs and spend billion usd for new players.
@Implicit_Truth

@@unwokeneuropean3590 Salary caps were a necessary set of training wheels for an MLS that follows in the footsteps of the NASL that failed in large part due to the bloated salaries of rosters with imported international talent. They felt it a necessary step to have a consistent league without regularly bankrupting teams before they do anything else. Especially given how incredibly unpopular soccer has been in the US up until the last decade or so, this at-least ensured a long lasting league. It's probably not needed any longer and we may well see it lifted in the near future. But I'm happy it was there when the league needed it.

Speaking as an American and a Newcastle fan, Yedlin is pretty done at this point. Still pretty quick, I suppose but that's it. Basquets and Alba are pretty slow at this point, and their defense is overall quite bad. They are going to concede a bunch of goals, but it'll be fun to watch, lol.

MLS is crap, but the US is an unexcavated gold mine as far as Football is concerned. If we could wake the giant, the US would be a huge contributor to the global scene. Things are progressing nicely. The US is catching on. Thank you Messi, thank you Beckham, thank you Lasso, thank you Wrexham, thank you EPL, etc. Critical mass approaches.
