The difference between you trying the Marmite and the vids of Americans trying it is night and day 😂 The shared Aussie/British pallette of yeast extracts.
Steve was correct about VCR. Video Cassette Recorder is the all encompassing term that cover different formats of video recorder including VHS, Betamax and U-Matic.
Don't know if you knew but Vegemite was actually created during wartime due to the shortage of Marmite, so that's why they taste similar, Australians apparently loved Marmite and wanted to copy it when they couldn't get it.
That's because British people emigrated to Australia and took their tastes and cooking knowledge with them so Australians and Kiwis have similar British food.
Loved this video guys! Love to see what people thing about British snacks/ food. Have you tried Terry’s chocolate orange (definitely have about 5 of these at Christmas 😂), custard cream biscuits, party rings (I think these are British?! Absolute staple at any childhood birthday party 😂). Hope you’re having a great time in the UK 🇬🇧😄
Thanks so much! 🥰 We LOVE Terrys choc orange, we have them in Australia and got unhealthily obsessed with them at one point where we'd share one almost everyday - SO GOOD!!! Love the custard creams also! Havent heard of party rings though 🤔 We had the best time in the UK and are already planning our next trip back, cant wait!!! Hope you guys are going well, your Romania series is awesome! 👏🏼 ❤️
I dont know if anyone else has said it, but the biscuit in the middle of the penguin bar is a bourbon biscuit! 😊 (assume you may have seen those over here in shops?)
You'll find Bourbons in the biscuit section of most supermarkets, usually alongside or in a selection pack with Custard Cremes(my favourite), both are classic old school British biccies, best enjoyed with a cuppa.🫖
Not bourbon as in the alcoholic drink. There's a few British biscuits named after European revolutionaries according to Alexi Sayle, you've got your bourbons, your garibaldis, and your Peak Freans Trotsky assortment!
kristy, you said sasperella (spell check), we had this back in the 80's, but was banned through europe as there was ingrediants that were not allowed, we called it vil a sasp, if was soft drinks that were made by a brewery, and also you could get delivered to your home, vans used to go round the estates, like ice cream vans, closest one that was allowed was dandilion and burdock (spell check) which we can still get,
Oh really? I didnt know this. We still have a few brands of sarsaparilla back in Australia and also had a soda delivery system back in the 80's & 90's that would deliver soda in glass bottles to your house. We only had this a few times but I think thats where I acquired the taste for it and other aniseed flavoured drinks (yum!). Thanks Sean! 😀
@@KristyandSteve yeah soda stream we called it here, put the gas bottle in, water cordiel, press for fizz, it was no cheaper, but pretty nice and great for the kids.
the brewery closed in the 90s, it was called vaux breweries, which catered forthe area, i guess they do not move on with the times, this was a comapany for 100 years plus, survided the war but could not survive the new generations, there is a reason for it, which im happy to tell you, its a culture thing and a new genration thing, i think it will blow your mind, how it was in 70's and 80.s, is was to do with the club culture, not night clubs, let me know if you want to hear about it, its long comment, but you will understand, abay boomer, 80 and 90;s crowd, gen x and gen z
Hi Folks , love what you do your a blast ii stayed in and around Sydney new south wales back in 1998 for a month, I loved it, made me feel at home everyone so nice , yes Marmite is also yeast extract from beer . made at Burton on Trent East Staffordshire , Regards Trev .
Hi Trev! Sydneys beautiful isn't it, lovely place to stay for a short time (you're lucky you went when you did as its very expensive now) -Glad you liked it though 😀 Thank you for watching our video & taking the time to comment, we appreciate it!
the marmite, does come in a smaller jar, you get it a bounty pack, which is free to all you mums to be, you get it from the chemist, its samples from companies who make baby product, wipes, talc, nappies and the likes and a baby jar of marmitem marketing, but hey its free
@@KristyandSteve There is a cool video on YT on the 'Food Unwrapped' channel all about it: What 'Black Magic' goes into making Marmite? | Food Unwrapped
Tablet is often served as a small square alongside a coffee in restaurants after a meal. A sweet treat. Too much and you’ll be peeling yourself from the ceiling from the sugar high. Most folk would just break off a square from the bar to snack on rather than eat the entire bar in one. Thankfully you tried Mrs Tilly’s as that’s one of the best mass produced ones.
Ahhh yes could imagine a small square served with a tea or coffee, that sounds lovely. We literally ate it like a chocolate bar and had finished it within 20mins of finishing the video 🥴 Had a migraine for the next two days lol serves me right!
Scottish tablet and the similarly sugary but non-dairy Kendal Mint Cake, were both popular expedition rations for polar explorers/mountaineers/hikers/campers and the likes. High energy/calory content and light weight.
Hate to admit it (as a Brit) but I prefer Vegemite to Marmite and Tim-Tams to penguins. I was taught the "Tim-Tam Straw" using cold milk? Never occurred to me that Irn-Bru tasted of cream soda until a RU-vid reactor said it last year 😁.
You have great taste Phil! Tim Tams and vegemite are superior 😅 Never tried Tim tams with cold milk, sounds good though! and yes Irn Bru absolutely has that cream soda taste, almost identical (dont know if id be able to tell the difference if I didnt know which was which)
Irn Bru (for accurate pronunciation try: "Eye-run Broo") has a distinct flavour which people assume is going to be like Cream Soda, or Orange, but is neither. (the colour confuses people when they can't identify the taste!) Try Indian Tonic Water mixed with a little Elderflower Cordial, (and IGNORE the colour or lack of it,) and you'll have the exact flavour of Irn Bru.
Hello! No we didnt. Our itinerary started in Glasgow to Loch Lomond, Glencoe, Inverness, St Andrews and back to Glasgow. We were initially going to Isle of Skye but decided to head east instead. Definitely will visit the islands next time were in the UK (next year hopefully 🤞)
The Penguin Biscuit is an institution in the UK.. You are bang-on about the similarities with a Tim-Tam. You can also Penguin Slam and suck your coffee through the biscuit. One little known fact is that the Penguin "biscuit" layer is actually a Bourbon biscuit which has been shrouded in the chocolate. The only difference between the two is the type of fondant filling.
Team pickled onion EVERYDAY! We also love the pickled egg you guys have on offer from your fish and chip shops, so good! (we try one in our other British food vlog) - we dont have anything like that in Australia unfortunately. Thank you for watching 😀
its the poor mans afternoon tea lol, we have tea with everything, good news, bad news, for a break, contractors working on your house, your a good tea house or bad tea house, which means as soon as you arrive, your offered tea, then every hour, biscuits on a plate, best thing you can do for british contractor, we go the extra mile lol, no tea, do it yourself, its not in contract lol
Haha Id say this is completely understandable. Tea is underrated in Australia and too many fruity options (not a fan of those) always English Breakfast with a splash of milk, served piping hot - the best!
Love your videos. I'm from UK. And I've tried every chocolate bar, bitten the edges off every type and drank tea through them. Spira was the best, but it's not made anymore. Also made sandwiches out of all types of chocolate or crisps, also made sandwiches usung all types of foods as fillers. Occasionally i just eat hot sauce as a Sandwich. Yes, I'm either a genius or insane. LOL
Definitely genius! You never know when you may stumble upon a great combination of flavours if you dont try, right? Think our favourite is the Boost bar (not sure if you have them in the UK?). Thanks for watching & taking the time to comment ☺️
Boost is a good choice. I've eaten that once by peeling the caramel+chocolate part away and eating the middle separately. I've tried all manner of combinations to separate chocolates parts before eating. My favourite chocolate used to be, "Time Out". But like all chocolates it's become cheaper and ruined, now it's too similar to "Blue Riband".
I'm going to Fant for a Minute. We're so used to be attacked..I'm English with a Scottish Dad my Mother English with Welsh Roots so if I'm Not British. I'll stand the drop of York
VCR is Video Cassette Recorder. VHS is Video Home System. VHS associated with the type of VCR you had, there was Betamax as well, but VHS became the most popular. Nerdgasm over. WHo cares! It's all digital these days. It's all Marvin!
I've tasted cheezels the cheese taste of them is so yummy i wish that cheese taste was common in the UK every country's cheese tastes slightly different I'm sure because of the cultivation and farming process
Vegemite is basically a poor man's Marmite. Marmite tastes better, is smoother and spreads much easier on your toast, whilst Vegemite is thicker and tears your toast to shreds. The Penguin biscuit is so like a Tim Tam from Australia. Tim Tam's are available in a wider range of flavours - the double chocolate version is to die for. Much better than any Penguin biscuit.
Agree with everything you said, except that marmite tastes better than vegemite - its almost identical in our opinion. Would happily enjoy both though! ☺️
I can't understand the excitement over Monster Munch (regardless of the flavour.) the very loose corn consitency of them means that you'll soon find your teeth coated with a thick gloop of soggy sticky cornmeal.
What annoys me that tourists try food without investigating how it shouldn’t be eaten lol biscuits should go with tea -they did right on marmite tho give them that
Lol Barrs IRN-BRU does not taste like cream soda, Barrs actually make cream soda too as well as numerous other flavours, compare the 2 and then say IRN BRU tastes like cream soda. Also why are you trying that IRN BRU with that artificial sweetener? You can buy the IRN BRU original and unimproved too you know, you'd like that much better, i would never drink that crap you were drinking. Also nice to see you P p p p picked up a penguin.
We didnt realise we picked up that specific Irn Bru, would definitely preferred to try the original. Tasted like creamy soda to us (maybe its a completely different in Australia to your creamy soda in the UK). Thanks for watching Gary!
@@KristyandSteve Barrs cream soda must be very different from yours in Aussieland if it tastes like irn bru lol, i'm curious now to know what your cream soda tastes like.
Great video guys, thanks very much 😊. Love to see you enjoying Marmite, there are SO many vids on here of Americans trying it, and they just can't get their heads around it LOL😅. Good luck on your travels.
I know. Americans tend to hate marmite but my husband from Minnesota loved it. He liked really savoury things like twiglets and Bombay mix so it makes sense. The sweet thing he really liked was Viscount biscuits!
OMG Viscount Mint biscuits!! I absolutely LOVE those 😍😍 Haven't had them since I was a kid. If your hubby likes those, try to get him some Club mint biscuits. They are to die for 😍👌👌

The penguin biscuit is a chocolate bourbon which is a very popular biscuit in the UK. It's just covered in chocolate and packaged up as a penguin. You missed the joke on the packet though 😂
Steve if you liked Bottom, Ade Edmondson is the new host of Out to Lunch podcast. Interviewing celebs over lunch at fancy restaurants in London. He is such a legend. It's a good podcast
There's a reason that Penguin bars and Tim Tams are so alike. Tim Tams are an Aussie's attempt to make a better Penguin. Specifically Ian Norris from the Arnott’s company visited England in 1958 while on a trip around the world looking for inspiration for a new product, and took away the idea for a biscuit similar to the Penguin.
Marmite made in Burton Upon trent was also the Home to Bass, Ind coop, still home to Marstons brewery and was as you say a byproduct of the brewing process
If you want to get a smaller jar of Marmite, all you have to do is have a baby in a UK maternity hospital. When mother and baby leave the maternity hospital, they take away with them what's called a 'bounty box' which contains various useful samples for a new mother and child. I'm not sure why a miniature jar of Marmite is included, but it always is, (I presume it's a suggested foodstuff as an iron supplement!)
The Scottish tablet is more of a survival food or something to keep your energy up if you’re out walking in the mountains, there is an English version too called Kendal mint cake
That bloody warmed my heart to know that one of my favourite bottom episodes was where you loved hobknobs on the other side of the world because you saw this episode.... it's a small world.
Oatcakes should have butter and cheese, any kind, Deans is the best scottish shortbread, made in Huntly Aberdeenshire. Irn Bru, pronounced iron brew, is a caramel flavoured drink, very Scottish, Tablet is a hard fudge.made with sugar, butter and condensed milk, exactly right.
Thanks for the suggestion Paul! Will give it a try. Deans is the best shortbread we have ever had (other than freshly baked homemade) so will be interesting to see how Bettys ranks! 😀
Vegemite is grittier than marmite..marmite has a smoother texture....love em both but marmite is superior..irn bru is absolutely top tier..gods own drink ....
Omg we loved the pickled onion monster munch!!! Wish we had them in Oz, superior to most chips we have in our shops 👌🏽 Thanks so much guys, missing your vlogs! 🥰
I hike and wild camp a lot so will pack stuff like tablet for a quick and instant energy boost, but I prefer mint cake which is kind of similar, it's just sugar, glucose, water and peppermint so a lot less rich, but VERY minty, if you go into any hiking shop in the UK they'll sell it, the first expedition to summit Everest took some with them.
I'll happily eat both Vegemite or Marmite, the difference is the consistency. Marmite is very smooth and shiny in colour whereas Vegemite is dull in colour and more paste like. It actually reminds me of copper grease that you'd use on brake pads and calipers as a lubricant.
