Very few players can cover much posts defensively : Giannis, Kawhi, Simmons to name few of them The positions, (1 - Point Guard / 2 - Shooting Guard / 3 - Small/Shooting Forward / 4 - Power Forward / 5 - Center) tend to be blurry nowadays with players being more and more versatile with bigs now shooting 3s with heavy efficiency etc but the logic is still to have smaller, quicker players that can handle/shoot/pass on positions 1/2/3 and bigger/stronger players that can body inside, play in the paint or defend the rim on positions 4/5. Facts are, for the Jokic/CP3 situation, Jokic being a center and Chris Paul being a point guard, that every offense tries to drag mismatches on key players to score, by passing, executing systems, cuts etc. Bigger players won't be able to guard the speed of smaller players, and smaller players wont be able to contest a Big trying to shoot, or trying to go at the rim. Elite players ofc are exceptions, nobody can efficiently guard 1on1 Harden, Curry, Kyrie, LeBron, Giannis etc Elite versatile defensive players are a real pain for the opponents : offense against players like Giannis, Kawhi, Ben Simmons etc are harsh because they are so freakish they can switch on pretty much anybody so there's no hope dragging a mistmatch out of them Note that there's still one type of unidimentionnal defensive player appreciated in the NBA : the rim protector. A traditionnal center who's role and talent is to intimidate, deny, reject or contest EVERY SINGLE attempt made to their basket. The 2 times running Defensive Player of the Year, Rudy Gobert, is a rim protector.
8:40 you're exactly right. Matchups are huge in basketball so if you've got a Center (Jokic) covering a Guard (Chris Paul) it's almost always a mismatch. This is why in today's game it's sooo important for guys to be able to cover multiple positions. Meanwhile, big slow centers are mostly fading away because they're generally not as reliable on defense.

Actualy strength is his only skill defensively.He is solid post defender and just stronger then almost every other guard in the league.Obviously he flops a lot but to be honest he is very physical when he is trying to draw a faul.

Luka you’re correct about the big man not supposed to be guarding the smaller players the positions consist of Point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and Center. Each player usually guards the same position unless they get mixed up like jokic. Examples of a player that plays each position; Pg: Curry Sg: James Harden SF: LeBron(sometimes) PF: Durant C: Jokic

Basically, the point guard/1 is the smallest person on court. His job is to be the primary ball handler, pass the ball efficiently, and be the playmaker (like being a mastermind of offense, he calls the plays and is seen as the leader)however if skilled enough, They can be the primary scorer too. Also, point guards have a track record of sucking on defense, but they're still a few that arent a liability on defense.Theres a term called point god which is a point guard that can do everything offensively in an elite level(think of it like the 1 and 2 became one dude but is still "small".) shooting guard/2 is like a slightly taller point guard that usually passes less and makes less plays but he's traditionally the scorer (kinda like being a point guards weapon. Cant think of a play? Then give it to the shooting guard and let him do his thing.) The small forward/3 is weird. They're is alot of variations so it's kinda hard to explain, but basically its like being a tall shooting guard without the quickness(depends on whom) and they CAN work on the post(the box area when they start rubbing their backs on each other , no homo.) Another term is point forward, its someone with a small forward build that plays like a point guard. Point forwards are op but not the most op.the power forward/4 is a smaller quicker center. So, he's usually in the post. his range is usually midrange. The center/5 is the tallest dude on the court. They protect the rim and strictly work in the paint(,the box area), however, sadly centers have been declining and now it's a lost art where only a few bigs have been considered good centers. There is a type of center that's considered to be unstoppable. The term is demigod/unicorn it's when a person with a center body can do ANYTHING. Nice observation. Yes, the screens cause mismatches, Chris Paul most likely got to attack Jokic from a screen; that same screen causes a switch. The shorter players usually the guards play on the perimeter. The lower your center of gravity you have the more balance, perfect example in football terms would be Messi.

There's different positions that specialize in doing different things on the court, one of the guards like Chris Paul, is smaller and quicker so he can dribble, create space, and pass well. On the other hand you got Jokic who is bigger and not as quick so he won't be as effective on the outside, but his strengths are down low where he can block shots, get rebounds, and protect the rim much better than Chris Paul could. A lot of times the effectiveness of the player depends on where they are on the court.

NBA players set picks not only to get open but because the defenders often switch off the pick giving the player a mismatch on defense. Like you said its really hard for a 7 footer to keep up with a lightning fast dribble machine on the perimeter but it goes both ways a big guy can just post up or just shoot over a smaller defender. Using picks to create mismatches are a huge part of the game!
