42 odd hours later, Ryan Newman walked out of hospital, on his own accord, holding nothing but his daughters hands. Incredible. Especially since a safety feature added to the roof of the car following one of Ryans crashes a few years back definitely made him as safe as he was!!

@@chuckbronco6485 Oh no doubt, however Ryan is a guy that has always called out NASCAR on their safety and has made them improve things. Not just with the Newman bar. The whole car undoubtedly saved him despite it being the thing to put him in that position in the first place. Go back a few years and we'd of lost him. I don't care if it was one bar or 50k, he's alive and he's seemingly very well and that's all we ever ask for :)

This message should answer *some* of your questions about NASCAR. Green Flag: Time to race! Track is open and you can pass for positions. Caution (Yellow) Flag: A wreck has occurred or slight debris is on the track, all cars are to slow down, hold position, and wait for it to be resolved. Red Flag: All cars to halt where they are as a clean-up is needed after a crash, or the weather conditions don’t allow them to race. White Flag: Final Lap! Make the most of it. (Many wrecks occur here) Black and White Checkered Flag: Race is over! First person to cross the flag wins. Notes: If a car can be repaired, and is deemed race-able without safety or speed concerns, it will be.

when did they change it to 6 minutes? last time i actually watched the sport they could take all race to get the car fixed and back out there, given that they could get it back to the garage in one piece. and i will say it's much more entertaining to watch something like Le Mans where you have 24 hours to race, and if you get knocked out early you can still feasibly make it back into the lead. and with series like that, you can pretty much replace and fix what ever you damn well please, unlike nascar.

One of the main things that happens when "The caution comes out" is that drivers are not allowed to pass each other. They continue running laps at a lower pace, but the "Racing" for position is removed. In very extreme conditions or extended cleanup situations they will "Red Flag" the race and all the cars will stop until the situation is solved.

@@clintlarvenz2570 not anymore, at least. they used to, up until a few years ago, when they added in what they call Overtime. Namely, they'll try to run a few laps under yellow to get everyone ready, then cross the line to the green flag again, letting everyone race. Once that green flag waves, they get one lap, before the white flag then waves - once the white flag waves, saying 'one lap to go', well, the next flag ends the race - whether that's the black-and-white checkered flag of 'race over', or the yellow caution flag because of a wreck. Previously, if a yellow caution flag was thrown and it was that late in the race, then for all intents and purposes the last full green flag lap of the race would be the decider, because since no one can change position under yellow, that'd mean everyone has their positions frozen in place for the rest of the race.

The biggest scare about the Ryan Newman crash was the fact that his car was hit by a car going 200+ MPH right into his driver side door, WHILE upside down. Back pre-2001, I don't think Newman would have survived that, but because of the leaps in how these cars are designed with safety in mind, he was able to walk out of the hospital just 48 hours later, and hopefully might be back on the track in a few weeks. It's just amazing.

I was there at the track, siting essentially at the spot where Newman was turned. The 3 hours after the race were some of the most nervous ones of my life. Watching as the ambulance taking Ryan to Halifax Medical Center seemed eerily reminiscent of Dale Sr. Back in 2001 when he passed away. I remember sitting in my hotel room just waiting for the NASCAR press conference to update us on Ryan’s condition. As soon as I heard non life threatening injures I breathed the loudest sigh of relief of my life. As of Feb 20th Ryan has miraculously been RELEASED from hospital and is currently at his home moving about with wife and kids. The extent of his injuries have still yet to be released to public but I think I stand for everyone when I say god bless you Ryan Newman and we hope to see you back in the car soon. We are all cheering you on. Ross Chastain was named replacement driver of the #6 car while Ryan recovers to full health but only until that point.

@TNR_Blade
@TNR_Blade 4 года назад
Ryrysmoke14 You are close. The “crash clock” as officials call it says that if you are involved in a crash you have a 6 min time limit in your pit box to make repairs and meet a minimum speed set by NASCAR and announced in the drivers meeting before each race. If a car fails to meet min speed and the clock has run out of time. You will be black flagged if the car is still on track or told to park it if still on pit road. While on the crash clock you may not go back to the garage area or replace parts. It is all duck tape and mallets and the occasional hack saw. Keep in mind crews are still only allowed 5 people “over the wall” to work on cars, so is more than that are working on the car then they will be penalized in an appropriate matter depending on the severity of the rule break (aka: however NASCAR sees fit)

I kind of disagree with the crash clock.. I get the point but I feel putting the teams under that much pressure to hit minimum speeds.. makes the probability of them missing a key saftey feature that could break at high speeds later. I'd rather them fix the car with the same rules.. without the 6 mins. Like no adding parts unless mandated by nascar. And at least giving the team a chance to make sure it's safe.. even if 30 laps down. U can still make 1 or 2 spots up

The fright about the Newman incident is... given the difference in speeds at that point, basically he got the nose of another car shoved into his (driver's side) window at 60-80mph. What's worse for the outside observer, there was no motion from the car at all before the safety crew arrived or during, and then even *worse*, they put up media screens... big black panels so nobody could get a view of what was going on with the scene. They turned the car over before getting him out, which is exceedingly rare and would be risky if he was injured, but there wasn't a choice given the way the car had landed and how it was deformed. The roof and side structure of the car was removed to get Newman freed up and onto a stretcher, and then there wasn't a single word other than the 'serious condition, non-life threatening' quote until he literally walks out of the hospital hand-in-hand with his daughters. So you can see why NASCAR fans and anyone else watching were just a little freaked out by that incident. The way the recovery activity went looked very much like it would had he been fatally injured, and it took quite a long time to hear otherwise.

Even at massive facilities like Daytona, we can see Turn 1 as easily as we can see Turn 3 thanks to TV and telephoto lens. On the ground in the pits, you can't see much at all. The only way to really know what's going on is to tune into the TV broadcast, and/or to hear it from your spotter or officials radio channel. Where Newman's car stopped was completely out of their sight from the pits, they aren't watching the broadcast, and no one I saw has a headset on. @@dorvinion Spotters. The at track announcers. The crew have TVs in the pits, or didn't you pay attention during the duels when they started talking about instant messaging? The wreck happened basically at the start/finish line, so anybody in the stands would have known. Anybody in the pits could have known. Half a brain listening to the crowd, the ambiance, people would know. Gibbs isn't stupid. He knew the wreck was abnormal, whether the prayer was for that or not is the question. But, you know, go ahead and tell me what "He isn't out of the car, yet" means. Of course it could mean that Denny wasn't out of the car. That's 100% possible. (don't run out on the track to celebrate, he's not out, yet) But I'd wager that at least one person had their headset on at SOME POINT. We didn't watch the FedEx crew from the moment of the crash until the moment they ran out onto the field. Most other huge wrecks like that, people know. It gets around. And again, don't forget, THEY HAVE A LOUD SPEAKER AT THE TRACK.
@MrSheckstr
@MrSheckstr 4 года назад
I think it’s likely a combination of both. As the winning team they join the driver in the winner circle, but given how seriously that wreck looked it throws all the normal procedures out the window. So the crew huddled together and waits for the signal from track officials on where to go and what to do AND for the opportunity for everyone to compose themselves. Each situation is different and it’s not fair to second guess them well after the fact when you know way more than what they could have known in the moment (and the YOU I meant was a generic you not a particular you )

Some clarification on the crash rules: The teams usually bring 2 of the same car to the track in case their main crashes or has some catastrophic failure in practice or qualifying. They can't change it in the race. In the race, the driver is (usually) ultimately the one who decides if the car is done. The level of damage is usually what forces the decision. If a guy has the car sideswipe the outside wall, they're probably fine. As long as the engine will run, they're probably going to keep going. If they go head on or are in a situation that damages the engine or vital components of the car (or the aero to the extent that they become uncompetitive or the car becomes undrivable), they're likely to call it a race. There is one big stipulation to this. In 2017, they instituted a damage clock. If a car has damage, they have 5 minutes to service it on pit road *_and_* get it back out onto the track and make minimum speed. Once they do, the clock expires and they can work on it as much as possible. If they run out of time, they're out of the race. And as far as "caution's out," that means a full course yellow. (The tracks don't allow a partial course yellow.) They take a few laps to clean the track and let the field pit and reform before resuming. Laps run under caution count towards the race total.
@bobby6715
@bobby6715 4 года назад
This type of racing, the "plate" tracks (tracks with such high of speeds the engines are restricted with a restrictor plate or now a tapered spacer in the carburetor) creates wrecks. These high of speeds and this close together makes the cars hard to control, and when they're that close, wrecks happen super easy.

So, to your question about damage: Cars are completely free to continue racing with damage, as long as they maintain minimum speed when the race restarts. If it's a small brush into the wall, or minor hit into another car, they usually just get taped up on pit road and continue just fine. If the accident is more serious, teams have 6 minutes to try and repair the car, and can only use tape, or saw parts off the car. They can't add anything like a new nose or fender. If they can do that in the time limit (usually under caution with the field slowed down), they can continue. If they can't, they go to the garage and are out of the race. Some cars are so damaged though that they go straight to the garage. Hope that makes sense! Love the channel.

Ryan Newman, who was the one involved in the last wreck and flipped over is from my home state Indiana. We at first thought his injuries were severe, but miraculously walked out of the hospital 2 days later without any major injuries. The reason the crash was so brutal was he was hit in the driver's door. The metal tubing that surrounds the driver to protect him was crushed and trapped him. Whats more surprising, Ryan Newman also has an engineering degree and actually helps designs safety features for NASCAR. One of which was an extra safety bar over the driver. That extra bar is partly what credited him to surviving that wreck.

Just a few explanations: -Drivers cannot change cars, and even very small hits are usually enough to take someone out of the race, so if there was anything other than a bump, you can assume that the car is done. -They do count the laps under caution while everyone drives slow and the wreck gets cleaned up, but if a race would normally finish under caution, they do an “overtime” where they do two laps at full speed to have an exciting finish. (Overtime can be redone if there’s another wreck early enough) -This race was very abnormal for having so many big crashes due to Daytona being a “superspeedway” track, where the race is really fast and everyone is close since they can stay at full throttle all the time. This also makes these races more dangerous. Most races have a fraction of the chaos as this one. -Within the season (which started with this race), races are usually every week (Saturday night or Sunday, unless there’s a delay), with very rare off-weeks. They’re trying something new this year at the Pocono track where, just once, they’ll have two races in one week (Saturday and Sunday). Thanks for the vid, hope this helps!

13:28 "Caution is out" means they turn on the yellow light, wave the yellow flag, which means the drivers all have to slow down. The pace car comes onto the track and they all have to stay behind it. Usually it's because of a crash, but if debris is on the track, say because a fan threw something down from their seat, or a piece falls off a car, will also cause a caution. They still count the laps towards the total, but a race can't end on a caution. They'll race extra laps at the end if they have to, which did happen in this race.

Been around Nascar my whole life, my dad worked in it for 20+ years... here’s a few things I c an share with you. 1) These cars are incredibly safe now. After wrecks like these, NASCAR will take the wreckage of a car back to their research and development center and look at video, etc and study the wreck and look to see how they can improve the safety. Newman actually has a pretty bad wreck a few years back at Daytona, and Nascar added what is now called the “Newman Bar” to the car... to help stabilize and reinforce the roll cage to make it stronger in wrecks like this. No doubt that it played a roll in keeping him alive here. It was very scary initially because he never got out of the car under his own power.... they brought in the black screens and cleared all media from pit lane.... it’s never good when that happens. 2) By enlarge Nascar races aren’t wreck feats. Daytona and Talladega are when you see most of these big wrecks, because they run a restrictor plate to reduce the speed/horsepower , which causes the cars to be in these big packs, which tend to lead to the big wrecks. 3) Newman almost certainly will race again, he won’t this week, for obvious reasons. They haven’t said when he could be back, but I’m sure he will be back.

The important thing to remember is these crashes happen not just because of the speed, but also all of the cars are set up at the edge of handling. You can make the cars more stable and planted for handling, but that drastically affects the speed, which on a track like Daytona is everything. So what looks like a small bump actually upsets the balance of the car just enough to start them spinning.

At Daytona, the cars are really sensitive to Aero damage so when the body gets damaged to slows your top speed and hurts your engine cooling but when a car is damaged they have 5 minutes to fix the car in pits if not they have to go to the garage to repair and can come back out whenever they are mechanically sound ie. the body panels arent flapping
@dinokillergaming

To answer the question about using multiple cars in the middle of a race it depends. In these races there are 3 events practice, qualifying, and the actual race. If they wreck a car during practice or qualifying they can switch to a backup car but must start at the back of the pack during the race. If they wreck during the race they can try and repair the damage as far as body panels but if it is mechanical they can try and repair it in the garage but it's usually over for them if they go to the garage.

Starting with the 2018 NASCAR season. When a car is damaged, but still raceable. They go into the pits and they are put on a 5 minute repair clock. They have 5 minutes to make as many repairs as they can to get the car back out, but then the car has to maintain a minimum speed which is determined per track. If either of those two things are not met, then the driver is disqualified.

1. They can repair the cars and return it to the race. Up until a couple years ago, you had as long as you needed, but now you have five minutes to complete repairs. 2. When a caution (yellow) flag comes out, it is like a safety car in Formula 1. Up until about 2004, you would race back to the flag (i.e. the caution would take effect when the leader crossed the start-finish line), but now the caution takes effect immediately (i.e. the field is frozen) and passing is not allowed. The car closest to the lead lap, called the "lucky dog", is allowed to get one lap back. Also, if the leader pits, any car between the leader and the pace car at the end of the caution period can pass the pace car and get one lap back as well. 3. There is usually a race every week on Sunday. Sometimes, they race on Saturday nights. They are usually off Easter weekend and once again in July. 4. Ryan Newman is expected to race again, although not right away. 5. This is the first time the President started a NASCAR race since 2004. NASCAR fans are generally very conservative politically, and strongly support Republicans.

With a caution, the race basically goes on "pause" in that the field is frozen in the position they're at when the caution comes out, but race laps continue to count down while the pace car leads the cars around the track at reduced speed. Since too many races would end under caution and the fans weren't enthused about that, NASCAR added "overtime," where you get a two-lap stint to end the race that can go past the initial lap tally. If the first one has a caution, they'll do another. This can be tricky if a team didn't fuel a car up with enough extra for those potential further laps. The Newman crash wasn't just bad because of how high the car flipped, but the circumstance that led to it. It might not be the best angle in the video you saw, but the other car hit his right about where he's sitting and caved in the car around him. It says a lot about how well the safety mechanisms in the car are done these days that he not only survived but is already out of the hospital. Given he was walking and without casts, there's a good chance he'll be racing again, possibly later this year. It takes a lot to keep a driver from being able to come back, i.e. Robert Kubica took part of a railing (IIRC) through his arm in a rally accident, but managed to race Formula 1 again a few years later (granted, he didn't perform the best, but his arm wasn't exactly back to shape). To really drive home how much a driver can take and get back into racing, look up Alex Zanardi. There was an accident in a race where a car took off the front of his car and part of both of his legs in the process, along with a LOT of blood loss. They had to do further amputation of his legs, but he survived, and later would go on to race again in a different series. (Only maybe just look up the story, not images or video. It's a BRUTAL crash.) Another one would be Geoff Bodine, who had an accident in the Craftsman Truck Series where his truck was just shredded apart and the roll cage (about all that was left) even got hit a couple more times. He had a number of injuries, but only missed ten races and returned later that year, and finished 3rd in the Daytona 500 the following year. He didn't do much after that, but he was already past 50 years old, so the fact that in his early 50s he took that kind of wreck and came back at all is pretty impressive.

6:19 you can only get a new car when you wreck in something separate from the actual race such as qualifying or practice. In his case his car was just barely able to be repaired so he was able to be continued, there is a thing called a damaged vehicle policy that basically limits the time you have to repair it, but once there is too much damage on a car then they can’t continue and must go to the garage.

To answer just a few of your questions: 1) Caution/yellow flag laps do count toward the race total. As others have mentioned, they are used to slow the field and clean the track. Drivers cannot overtake each other on the track, but positions can change during pit stops depending on how fast drivers leave the pits (without going over the speed limit). At the end of the race, however, NASCAR tries to provide a green-flag finish by using an Overtime rule, extending the race as many laps as they need to if the leading car doesn't take the white flag to signify the last lap. 2) After a win by one of his teams, Joe Gibbs always leads that team in a prayer. That night, no one at Joe Gibbs Racing knew the severity of the crash before entering victory lane and Joe Gibbs himself apologized for the celebrations that took place. 3) Ryan Newman will not race this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but considering that he walked out of the hospital, I would not be surprised if he's back next week at Auto Club Speedway in California. He's one tough guy! 4) The sheer number of wrecks and the number of cars in one wreck (known as "The Big One") are only typical for races at Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway. Because of the extreme speeds that these cars can get up to at these two tracks, NASCAR restricts the engines, resulting in the pack-style racing you saw.

Regarding vehicles that are involved in wrecks, Nascar has a rule that says you get 6 minutes on pit road to try and repair the car and get it back out on the track. If you cant get it back on the track and hit a certain minimum speed then you are out of the race. You'll often see pit crews cutting broken chunks off of cars and patching dents and corners frantically trying to get back into the race.

A lot of people outside of America usually don't realize just how big and popular NASCAR is. Also, these cars are so far on the edge of control, if u could be in the passenger side of another race car at 200 mph, u could reach out, and use your index finger to and spin that race car out. Also, as long as the cars are going straight, the cars create a lot of downforce. But once the car so spins out, at those speeds the car wanted to lift off the ground like a feather. During the race, depending on bad the car is damaged, they call go into the ours and try to fix the car. They have 5 min to fix the car on pit road, but when they return to the race, they have to be able to run a minimum speed or lap time. Obviously after the race, the team takes the car back their race shop and repair the racecar. Replacing anything that needs replacing these teams always have 8 to 12 cars ready to go to the track at any time.

Ryan Newman was released from the hospital during the middle of the week. There was video of him walking to the parking lot holding the hands of his two small daughters. Probably all of your questions have already been addressed but here goes... Daytona is one of two 2.5 mile tracks which makes it possible for the cars to go at higher speeds than other smaller tracks. Over the years NASCAR has tried engine and aerodynamics rules to try to slow the cars down but that has usually bunched up the cars which has resulted in more wrecks. "Cautions" result when there is any type of wreck or when a piece of debris gets on the track. It's for safety reasons because it slows the cars down so the track can be cleaned up, injured drivers can be safely removed. Cautions also allow for pit stops to be made under less stressful conditions but the drivers can gain or lose positions as a result of the pit stop time. Otherwise, no passing can be done out on the track during Cautions
