There's another video by Nihn Ly called "The Code" which goes into greater detail about the unwritten rules of engagement. I recommend reacting to that one.
Technically yes, fighting is a rule violation. You’re kind of accepting the fact that when you drop the gloves you’re gonna sit in the penalty box for 5 minutes. It won’t hurt your team because the guy you fight is getting a penalty too.
A book could probably be written on this subject, but the bottom line is the fighting inside the glass allows the game to be self policing. There's alot of respect to be gained from that. Accountability is on full display for everyone to judge, from players to fans, and then to witness as the game progresses. Alot of times, accountability doesn't happen during the game because 'the full story' isn't always known by the final horn. Perhaps someone got hurt by a cheap shot but it wasn't known until later how severe an injury. Perhaps the league needed to suspend someone but they gave them a slap on the wrist. So teams will settle things the next time they play each other...and oftentimes fans know what's coming even before the puck even drops...because that's how hockey is. I've seen unsettled issues between teams extend from one season to the next...then they drop the gloves months later and go on with business. It's all of these reasons that hockey is so awesome and has always been my favorite sport.
Every NHL team has a designated "enforcer" (fighter) who is often one of the most popular players on that team and also one of the most reviled by fans of other teams. Slashing in hockey is more dangerous than fighting IMHO. 👍
I can't lie, there would be a lot fewer dirty players in other sports if there was some kind of equivalent to Hockey fights in those sports. You wouldn't see pitchers throwing fastballs at people's heads or linemen cutting at people's knees nearly as much if all it cost was a bit of a penalty to turn around and punch them in the face for it. Completely impractical for any other sport, but it has a proper place in hockey for a reason and I love it at the right time for the right reason.
Check out videos of the Brawl in Hockeytown (Red Wings vs Avalanche). As a kid, that was pretty much my introduction to hockey, and I’ve been hooked ever since
Thats actually crazy. Adds an incredibly primal element to the sport. The concept is so foreign to me, my brain cant make sense of hockey and brutal fighting going together, because I associate ice skating with being something elegant and peaceful😂 I have no practice input on it. I won't say it shouldn't be a thing but it also makes no sense to me so i'm somewhere in the middle saying it is what it is but it's definitely interesting
Thats not necessarily true. Because, generally in a fight, the penalties are the same for both teams. Also, you'll often see a LOT of fighting towards the end of a blowout in the playoffs. If theres 5 minutes left and one team is up 6-1, the losing team is going to try to send a message.
@@catherinelynnfraser2001 ok what was the offense? What should he have gotten suspended for? That punch to his shoulder? Or for tossing panarin after he jumped on his back.?
Hey man, there was a huge fight a couple days ago you should react to it, New York rangers vs Washington capitals fight. It was 2 min into the game. You’ll see why.
I’m a little late but in other countries fighting isn’t as accepted you get more injuries since players know if they take a cheep shot at someone, there’s no one who will fight them on it, so it stops a lot of bad hits or cheep shots in the game as well
Fighting is usually less common in the playoffs, as one doesn't want to risk putting themselves at a disadvantage. Went to a Blue Jackets vs. Oilers game at the end of the season when both teams were terrible & had nothing to lose, tho, and about 3-4 fights broke out.
How about overtime game winning goal. Some goals in overtime have won the Stanley Cup. Anyone remember the Broad Street Bullies and the old Boston Bruins
In any other sport, if something happens you have to hope that the ref saw it and is going to do something about it. In Hockey, If something happens and the refs don't see it, you can do something about it.
The reason that if somebody died in a Montreal Toronto game we're okay, is that in Canada, where hockey was born, as he said, it's a hockey culture, and we would understand (probably). But not in the US. No way, not a hockey culture, and notice he mentioned a Phoenix (desert) Florida game. They sure as hell didn't grow up playing hockey every winter, they never even saw snow, let alone frozen lakes and rivers. Not so much he's played hockey, I'd say he is Canadian.
You have to check out the infamous 1979 brawl between the Rangers and Bruins that spilled into the stands. May of us would love to see your reaction to that. After your reactions to the Disco Demolition and 10c beer nights, and other crazy things, this would be a good follow-up. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fp1x_2Iu5BQ.html
I don't follow hockey in the slightest and I couldn't even name 3 teams but it's probably the most entertaining sport on the planet. It's so fast paced and the dudes just smash each other into the wall.
Beesley - I'm seeing talk of a power cut to Jersey being threatened by France over a fishing rights dispute with England? How concerning is this for you?

hockey is a Canaidian sport, which embodies the culture of the country. Allows fighting to keep tempers under control. Baseball/basketball/football are American sports which doesn't allow fighting, murder capital of the world, enough said.
@@spenbro if you’re implying that the United states is the country with the most murders, a cursory google search will reveal that that is factually incorrect.
