British star Cherie Lunghi has built a substantial theatre, radio, movie and TV career that’s included The Mission with Robert DeNIro, the Bruce Beresford directed King David alongside Edward Woodward and Richard Gere and in the Kenneth Branagh-directed Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
Cherie also appeared in Edward and Mrs Simpson, in the controversial TV series Secret Diary of a Call Girl and in the BBC’s spectacularly successful Strictly Come Dancing variety series.
But it was her eye-catching performance as Guenevere in John Boorman’s 1981 sword and sorcery retelling of the King Arthur tale in Excalibur that caught the eye of Hollywood’s film-makers.
Cherie came to the Cannes Film Festival that year where I had a chance to catch up with her for a brief interview.
She has English and Italian heritage.
Born in Nottingham and she was brought up by her English mother and aunts in West London, after her Italian father left the family.
Cherie is still working in the UK in theatre and television.
She turned 72 this year, 2024.
Her daughter Nathalie is also an actress.
