@ALupusAlbertus

The problem for most non-native speakers is that they probably learned British english pronounciation at school but forgot it later because they mostly had contact with American english speakers. The result is a strange mixture that exposes you immediately, even if you actually speak English quite well.

Another factor is that USA is one of the biggest exporters of pop culture to countries with English as an official and/or a commonly used language, but consisting of non-native speakers, like South Asia and parts of Africa. So even though we learn the British variation of English in school, the "native" accent we most commonly come across in film or audio is the American one. Philippines might be an exception to this as they have a history of American occupation, so the variation of English they learn is probably the American one.

I am from Turkey and i can say that since there isn't really much of a speaking lesson in our schools (we just learn the grammar and shit then get into an exam where we just write) we learn how to talk from the internet. Movies, videos, video games and so on. We learn speaking from what we hear on the internet. I think most of the non native people have that. I just realized that i have accepted some from British and some from American accent. I say water with the T like a British but say the R like an American. It is wo-t-r for me.

@clement Asampana No, don't lie. Original language was several centuries ago. In America and in England was one version of the language and it became to evolve. And now we have 2 evolved versions of one language and we can judge that an American version is so much better. English from England ISN'T original one, so don't say that stupid nonsense. You just make me sure for an additional time that Englishmen are arrogant and stupid.
@asbest2092
@asbest2092 5 лет назад
@clement Asampana No, Englishmen speak like uneducated Americans, it's a fact. You talk completely stupid and arrogant nonsense. English from England isn't an original version, humble yourself. What are your arguments? Territory? At all? Only the territory is your argument? So, it means you aren't right. People are laughing at you(I've shown your comment to other people). So, stop write nonsense to me.
@asbest2092
@asbest2092 5 лет назад
@clement Asampana 1 - The USA made English international, not England. People watch americans movies, play americans games, use americans services and etc. Not England's. 2 - I've already proved modern England's English isn't original. 3 - Americans more frankly and more friendly than Englishmen, I know several Americans and one of them is my friend(not English "friend", because your "friend" means nothing). 4 - I really think you write to me only because you want to prove me my words.
@asbest2092
@asbest2092 5 лет назад
@clement Asampana I thought I made mistakes and you could notice that English isn't my native language, but you thought I'm American, ok. I don't hate Englishmen. I just took two versions of the language what I learn, compared them and made a conclusion that American version a lot better than British. You're ignorant, not me. I've already told you how English became an international language. You don't want to believe it, because you're too arrogant but this is true. For example Russia had Poland and Finland, but they don't speak Russian, so, a language spread not throug colonialism. You have to understand, English ≠ England. It isn't your language now, you're just one of those who use it in their own way. Don't think that all what was reached by English belongs to England, no. And my nickname is "Asbest(asbestos, a metal)" not "as" and not "best", I divided this word because youtube wanted me to fill name and surname fields. Your head is thick, silly arrogant boy.

What an impressive video! By the way, can you do 'Why Chinese speakers sound Chinese' with Jackie Chan or someone else? Most Chinese, no matter Mandarin speakers, Cantonese speakers, Wu speakers, have such characteristics like: 1. Can't pronounce 'sh, ch' or else like in China, Shanghai, and so on, 2. Exaggerate the ending consonants (non-Cantonese), 3. Replace v with w, 4. Replace h with x like in Scottish, 5. Pronounce tr, or dr, as sound like chw, 6. Capable of pronouncing, but exaggerate the 'schwa' sound, 7. Replace the voiced consonants with Tenuis consonants. A video, or some similar stuff, would be helpful among Chinese native speakers!

I think the best way to learn an accent is to live for a certain amount of time in the place where it is used. I've never been in the United States or Great Britain and only travelled across other european countries and spoke English with other non native speakers so I learned the pronounce from many different youtubers both from USA and GB. So the result is a funny mix of Italian accent (I'm from Italy) and texan/british pronunciation 😂 (texan because the first youtuber I've ever binge watched for months without captions was Grav3yardgirl, and british because I try to imitate the beautiful and perfect speech of John MacLean.)

@Mack No that is a myth. English accents and American accents have both changed and are still changing. American accents have been influenced by the many immigrants from non English speaking countries over the years. There are many English dialects [ I'm saying English rather than British because Scottish and Welsh dialects are so different and are influenced by their own languages ] and many of these English dialects retain features that date to before the US was colonised. We have certainly not changed our accents to sound 'fancy'. Some of us sound more educated, or speak more standard English, others speak with strong accents that can be hard for people from other areas to understand.

Generally speaking, if the er sound in middle of words (as in word, girl, herd), the r will be pronounced; but if it’s at the end, it may not be; so I often pronounce mother, dinner, and October as mothah, dinnah, and Octobah.
