fortunately there's a very recent law that's passed in wv to finally allow people to make small quantities for personal consumption there now if we can get the feds to make a similar exemption, that'd be amazing. But I think of a branch in this context as a rivulet which is still not big enough to be a creek. However, in the Appallachians, at least, it would probably not be a temporary watercourse, which is more common out west, since they would usually be fed by a mountain spring.

A branch feeds into a larger stream. If you look at the branch of a tree and follow it back to the trunk, it is similar. Because there are many small streams feeding into a larger one, "branch" is used to identify which smaller stream you are referring to. For example - Coldwater branch, Hucker's branch and Sutallee brach all feed Conn's Creek

If you want to understand where Appalachian slang comes from, look at the dialects of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Many of our linguistic patterns are derived from those dialects because the majority of the Appalachian settlers were from those areas. To this day, if I hear someone from those areas speaking, it has an oddly familiar sound to me. Is it different from my native dialect? Without a doubt, yes. However, the cadence, the shape of the sounds, and the sentence structure are very similar. In a lot of ways, it is very reminiscent of my more rural family.

It's definitely a toughie, but as others put in the comments, app-a-latch-a is generally the way most pronounce it although some from other parts of the country also mispronounce it. But it's a native word, like many places in the US. Good job with your guesses. Some are difficult. The made and still make Moonshine all over the Appalachian mountains which spans many states. My uncle by marriage used to make it but you can get in serious trouble as it's not federally regulated. But most shiners know what they are doing. It goes back to our prohibition days when alcohol was illegal. Shine or White Lightning was made under the moon at night to be descret as when you heat up corn or liquid, it causes steam or smoke. Real moonshine, the stuff that isn't sold on shelves, is super strong. You can clean out a wound with it or fuel your tank 😂. Some throw fruit in it (doesn't do much to help), but sometimes they put fruit in the moonshine if it's not high quality to cover up the bite. It's a traditional craft thats been passed down generation after generation, and despite the law, people in the states seek the hook up of getting a mason jar of it if they are so lucky to find one.

I've lived in various parts of Virginia and West Virginia since 2002, and while I can only speak from my own experience, I don't think I've had any of these come up in general conversation, outside of maybe the "bald side of a mountain" or a "branch that feeds into the river" (most people I know would call that a creek). The closest thing I've heard to a "blind house" is a deer blind. I must have missed that day in school. :/ I wouldn't worry about it. You can still visit Appalachia and you'll have no trouble if you don't recognize these words. You can also pronounce Appalachia either way; I've heard people who have lived here all their lives pronounce it both ways. The most you'll have to worry about is people asking you to repeat yourself because we're not used to such "exotic accents". :) Don't sweat not knowing these, and have fun on your trip!
