As an American, just trust us when we say don’t privatize your health care system. NHS is far superior to any healthcare system we have here in the states. I pay 500 dollars a month for single coverage and I am only 26 years old. And to make matters worse my coverage doesn’t cover everything. I still have to pay copays, deductible and 20 percent of the procedure.
@klimtkahlo

You are an exception. Most Americans I work with and interact with think they have a great healthcare. And are totally against universal healthcare and view it as “communist”. I am happy to learn some Americans as yourself see it differently!

@@klimtkahlo I will second what the other guy says. There are pros and cons to each but privatization with insurance is a bad mix. I had insurance, but was still charged a ridiculous amount for basically getting my blood pressure and temperature checked one time. Frankly the people who are afraid of socialism or whatever just need to get over it

Don't be a fool. When you need serious treatment, you'll be glad to be in the US. NHS maybe good for every day stuff but just look at cancer treatments: some drugs are denied to patients by the NHS. Meanwhile, in the States, even the regular joe have access to it. Only in America people have access to the best healthcare available.

In Brazil we have SUS. No matter if you are rich, poor, brazilian, foreign (legal or illegal). If you need medical attention, you have Right. Unfortunately, the public health system has problems and needs to be improved, but it's a great program and needs to be protected. Thank you. I love learning english with you.

Very interesting video. In Italy that's my country, we have the "Servizio Sanitario Nazionale" which is based on the same principles of universality, equality and equity as the Nhs. And even if they are not perfect, I think we should be proud of living in countries that guarantee free medical assistance for everybody.

Another italian here. Some years ago I had a cardiac arrest, hospitalized for 20 days, implanted a defibrillator, taking ten drugs per day, having a modem connected to the cardiac dept. How much did/do I pay? Exactly zero. I'm happy that I live in Europe where we have the NHS. Maybe sometimes they are not perfect but...thanks to exist.

I Lived in Germany and Austria and found their health system to work flawlessly. They actually apologized for 5 min. Wait time!!! In The USA you wait for three hours sometimes. Also medicines were two or three different costs, all super affordable! And in Austria the doctor told me to have ice cream to cure a sore throat. I mean, best doctor ever!!!

Incredible! I must say, having heard from Isi about the system in Germany, it sounds like something the NHS in the UK could develop into.

What I heard from foreigners though is that it´s much more expensive for us than in other countries. So I as a student have to pay 120€ a month which is like 15% of my income and that is a discount already. Thus, our hospitals are far from well organised and the staff is really underpaid. It has its flaws when you actually need a lot of care. But in the end I am also very happy and grateful to be able to go to the doctor without any concerns, even if it´s a small thing (approx. waiting time 30 mins).

I believe Spain’s system to be far superior to UKs NHS..to give you some idea I was diagnosed with a colon tumor after a blood test. I was operated on in less than a month and now just over a month later am in full recovery..after care exemplary. I’ve lived in Spain for about twenty years, and like many other retired Brits never found their health service wanting…..long waiting lists are pretty well unheard of.

The most Important investment a Government can make is in the health of its people. I noticed Service/System where both mentioned, both are quite different. The NHS is a model copied by most Western countries, but for it to be the best (which it isn't) would need a lot more investment which means higher taxation and a more rigorous tax system, or a limit to what it can realistically provide. The choice is yours, but we need to seriously talk about it and its funding , with political rhetoric and dogma put to one side. This is something that has been talked about all my life (I an 67 ) and still no further forward.

Having lived in Germany, England and the US and having had to use all three healthcare systems, I find the NHS (if it were better funded) the fairest and most accessible system. Yes, as a student in 1990 I had to wait weeks to have an X-ray for example, but when we felt ill, we could always at least see the college nurse and/or the GP. When travelling in the UK in 2009 I got seen when I didn't feel well. I was pregnant at the time, they found out what was going on and gave me a prescription, all without fuss. Not sure how that would work now since the UK have left the EU though. As an EU citizen I was automatically entitled to use the NHS and its services. In the US it's all about money, there is no general access to even a minimum of health care and as the young mother said even with insurance you can end up with huge bills. Every time I see a doctor here, I have to pay at least $20 out of pocket and that adds up!!!!
@klimtkahlo
@klimtkahlo 2 года назад
100% not to mention $2,000 deductibles in the USA. So people are basically afraid to be checked and care is not preventive as it should always be, IMO.
@dkim2011
@dkim2011 10 месяцев назад
FDR wanted Universal Health Care, and was even an inspiration to the UK in that regard, but domestic opposition by "organized medicine" proved too strong -- which also had a lasting influence on a sizable minority chunk of US public opinion. In the UK the problem seems more economic: Britain chose finance over industry and austerity over investment, meaning that the will and the wherewithal to invest much larger sums in the NHS has been lacking in the post-Thatcher era. Put another way, if you removed London from the equation, the UK would be as poor as Mississippi! And that doesn't bode well for the NHS, absent a political revolution.

Three months ago I had a gallbladder attack. I had to go by ambulance because I had chest pains. I went in on a Wednesday night to my local emergency room. I ended up having emergency surgery removing my gall bladder after having a battery of diagnostics including X-ray, ct. scan, etc. I have really good health insurance. When I saw the bill later after getting well. The cost was over $40,000 or £30,600. I had to pay the deductible around $500.00. The problem is you get separate bills. The hospital, the diagnostics group, the lab, the surgical team. They bill you what the insurance will not cover. The care was top notch. Boston area has probably has some of the finest healthcare facilities in the world. I received care through Tufts Medical. You also have Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women. The New England Baptist Hospital, one of the best orthopedic institutions in the country. My father who’s in his mid 80s had two full knee replacements there. One year apart for each knee. He’s 88 years old and he works on a gold course. He has really good supplemental insurance on top of his Medicare which is insurance everyone is entitled to once they retire.

Here in Italy we have as well a public health service (SSN: Servizio Sanitario Nazionale; National Sanitary Service), free for people, for example, wo live in poverty or which have handicaps. If you need First Aid, of course you don't have to pay, or if you suffer a car accident .. Yes, also here we have long lists of waiting if you need special cures or doctors but, depending on what maybe you have to find a better doctor in the private, and pay more... Personally I don't have experiences about English NHS, just in Italy and Spain (Canarian Islands).

Why do people in Brighton think that NHS is a unique world-wide exception?
@az.................
@az................. Год назад
As an American…. I think what's unique about the NHS is who it covers, the standard of care, and how it's paid for. You can find affordable, accessible health care in most of Europe. However in Spain, for instance, doctors are often unwilling or disinterested in speaking anything other than Spanish. In the UK? Call 111 and choose from a smorgasbord of languages. The NHS is almost exclusively funded via taxes (IIRC), where in countries like Germany or the Netherlands you'll find a much greater private sector involvement.

The world: health care should be universal and free for all. USA: health care is a privilege of the rich and pray that you don’t get severely sick and thus bankrupt.

Hello there! It's Gabriele from Italy. I could tell a lot of things about our health service.... Well, I hate to say this but it leaves a lot to be desired and that stems from the fact that our politicians have been cutting on it for a number of years because they have to abide by what the European Union says and this is unacceptable!!
