They cut the scenes off too soon in some of them. In the ones where Dorothy yells "Condoms, Condoms"....The clerk says to her "Calm down lady, did you just get out of prison?" 🤣🤣
The original uncut recordings are on the dvd sets. I watched them in the late 80' through the early 90's and even today they still make me laugh. This show will never get old! I just hope it's never decided to remake it. People just need to leave perfection alone!
Remember, the important thing is that Head Writer on The Golden Girls Christopher Lloyd (not to be confused with the actor of the same name) was a Co-Creator and Producer of "Modern Family" that is why the writing on both shows were Emmy Award winning.
With all due respect it seems implied that the success came down to one man when in reality the brilliant writer and not to mention creator of the Golden Girls Susan Harris had a major part to play in its success while Christopher Lloyd only wrote for the first 4 seasons I believe.
@@robertovz5895 Susan Harris was the creator of The Golden Girls as well as Soap and Benson so Susan was the main person at the top of course. But yes Christopher Lloyd wrote many episodes and later Co-Created Modern Family that Office Bloke Daz reacts to. That was the point i was making. In actuality The Golden Girls had a whole team of writers and Christopher Lloyd was among them.
He also wrote for Frasier! Looove that show!! Won 38 Emmys and 2 golden globes! Nominated and won many other great awards. In total Frasier was nominated for 318 awards and won 112 of them! Such great writing it makes sense he worked on all these great shows I see a style and love the humor of them all
What was great about Bea Arthur sometimes she had scenes where all she needed to do was shoot a look and her eyes & face said it all without saying a word! 🤣
I like the one where they get robbed so Rose gets a gun and almost shoots Blanche. Sophia comes out and says how she's lived 80 years and survived illnesses, etc. and "one night I'll belch and Stable Mabel here'll blow my head off!"
Dorothy is my fave character she really is the nucleus of the group. Top 5 American comedy of all time- no remake of this show will ever even come close to the genius of the original.
@@tonyborelli.I'm sure they have wonderful, talented black actors in mind but they need to leave this alone. I would say that even if white, Asian, Hispanic actors were going to do a reboot of GG. Nothing will ever come close to the magic of these 4 gifted ladies. Let's just remember the greatness of this show without ruining it with subpar reboots. Me thinks you posted this to start a racist conversation.
The song was originally written and performed by Andrew Gold, who had a big hit with it in 1978. You can find it on youtube. It’s a much better song than when it was re-recorded and shortened for “The Golden Girls” in 1985. The producers of The Golden Girls felt the song fitted better with a woman singing it, because the show was about the friendship of the four women. I loved Andrew Gold’s version in the 70’s, and when I saw the first episode of The Golden Girls when it premiered in September of 1985 and the theme song started, I was shocked and went “wait a minute....I know this song!”.
As others have said, the show is set in Miami but the women come from all over the USA. Dorothy has a scabrous east coast sense of humour. I have friends like that from New York who remind me of her. It’s very well cast and well written with better put downs than I’ve ever heard in British sitcoms and with none of the soft-edged earnestness from which many US sitcoms suffer. It was extremely popular on both sides of the Atlantic in the late 1980s.
Ugh I love the golden girls! I’m 28 but I have older parents. My dad is 64 and my mom is 59. My mom had me watching golden girls, green acres, bewitched, and gilligans island growing up 🥰
This is one of the shows my grandma and I would watch together. She loved this show and so did I. The writing is just so good and multiple generations can enjoy it.
FYI, Bea Arthur playing Dorothy actually did go prematurely gray and white long ago. Estelle Geddes, playing Sophia, her mother, is actually the youngest actress in the bunch. The actress playing Blanche, Rue McClanahan, used to play in a show with Bea Arthur called Maude - that's a pretty interesting show to check out. Bea Arthur plays a feminist in the 70s. Betty White also went prematurely grey & white pretty young, but always wore it well. All of the ladies are playing mid-50s but are actually about 10 years older except Estelle Geddes, she was in her 40s when they started, and she's playing the age of early to mid 80s.
Bea Arthur was great friends with Angela Lansbury. At Lansbury's insistence, her character on Murder She Wrote -- Jessica Fletcher aka JB Fletcher -- had the middle name of Beatrice.
The first season of the Golden girls 1985 Rose was 55 Dorothy was 54 Blanche was 53 & Sophia was between 80 and 85 They were 180 half hour shows spanning 1985 through 1992
The show first aired in 1985, I think. Bea and Betty would have been 63, Estella would have been 62. Making Stan and Rue, the youngest at 52 and 51. You have to factor in that beauty, health, and cosmetics have come a very long way in the last 30 years, plus stage makeup and fashion. There's something to be said about actors and actresses who age gracefully.
As a kid I loved Dorothy - as an adult, it's still funny at face value - plus there's a lot of additional joy connected to Maude? Idk exactly how, nothing direct, but it's comforting, too. Idk if you had to be watching US TV through the 60s & 70s (or reruns later on) to experience that extra hilarity of the GG?
When they starting filming Bea and Betty were about 64 so they were in their 70s by the end of the show’s run. They were supposed to be playing women in their early 50s!
Funny GG clips. Not so much in the way of "reaction" though. Crazy to think that some people who are legit Fair Use get demonetized, strikes, or deleted; and then there's this. :/
The Queen was a huge fan of The Golden Girls. I would’ve loved to have seen her watching the show and laughing hysterically, it would’ve been so out of character.
Not at all out of character....... our Queen was known for having a very good sense of humour. Also Charles and Camilla. It must be very hard for them to keep a straight face sometimes, when they are carrying out public duties
I was raised by my British granny that was a war bride. She was born 2 days earlier than Elizabeth and 2 miles from Buckingham Palace so she often joked the stork had obviously made a mistake. 😂 When I really get to missing her a fix a cup of tea and put on the Golden Girls. I lost her when I was only 23.
The show is set in Miami, Rose is from St.Olaf Minnesota Blanche is from Atlanta Georgia and Dorothy and Sophia are from Brooklyn New York but Sophia grew up in a village in Sicily
Estelle Getty (Sophia) Dorothy’s mom, in real life was one year younger than Bea Arthur (Dorothy) and Betty White (Rose)! When it premiered, Betty White and Bea Arthur were 63, Estelle Getty was 62, and Rue McClanahan (Blanch) was 52.
@@LQOTW I’m 61 also and my now 34 year old daughter (who would watch it with my mom and me) says that my mom, who is now 86, would be Sophia and I would be Blanche (gotta make sure I put that “e” on the end)! I’m not quite sure what to think about my own child comparing me to Blanche but she definitely has my mom as Sophia pegged down right to a tee….except I personally think my mom is way worse than Sophia!!! 😂😂
I watched this show when it first aired. Most kids probably wouldn't have chosen to, but growing up poor, the family has one TV, no cable, and your parents pick the shows. I still loved it. My girlfriend has GG posters, shirts, DVD box set, calendars, you name it. It's one of the few shows that we both like.
Bea who played Dorothy had previously starred in a successful series as title character Maude, and Rue who plays Blanche was her neighbor in that series. Betty White who plays Rose had also previously starred in the series Mama's Family with Rue. The initial plan was for Betty to play Blanche and Rue to play Rose, but they decided to switch them because Betty had previously played a man hungry Sue Ann Nivens in the Mary Tyler Moore show and Rue's character on Maude tended to be a little ditzy like Rose so they switched up their types for this series and it is hard to imagine it any other way. Estelle who played Dorothy's mother Sophia wasn't really planned as a lead but she worked so well in the part, she became the 4th lead. All of these talented ladies won Emmys for their portrayals during the series run.
@@Plooky1969 she never hated Betty, for what it’s worth...In a 2001 video interview, when asked about Betty, Bea said, "What can I say? She was wonderful." She didn't expand on her answer like she did with Rue, but she was quite frank in that interview and had an opportunity to put Betty down and didn't. And in a 2002 audio interview (posted to RU-vid in 2011), she complimented Betty’s comedic abilities. Finally, in 2003, she reportedly said the rumors were "tabloid nonsense because we're women." I say reportedly because there's no audio/video for that one
The two things which got progressively worse and more ridiculous with each new season. It reached a point where I couldn't stand it anymore and stopped watching after about the third year.
While all the characters we're well known with a long history in show business, Betty White (Rose) was considered a national treasure. She starred or co-starred in some of most loved television series in the US. Her last series was called Hot in Cleveland and she was 93 when the series finally ended.
It "finally ended" almost before it ever got started. And Betty White couldn't hold a candle to Bea Arthur as far as I'm concerned. She was blessed with a comic timing and delivery rare among actors.
The first time I ever saw Bea Arthur (Dorothy) was on 'All In The Family'. She did a few guest appearances as Edith Bunker's cousin Maude. She and Archie Bunker would do this kind of sniping at each other constantly. Maude became a much loved character because she gave Archie back exactly what he sent her way. She was one of the few people that could actually leave him speechless. I loved seeing them together on screen. Maude was so loved by 'All In The Family' fans that they created a show about her. She lived with her second, ? Or third?, husband and her recently divorced daughter and her young grandson. She had a housekeeper named Florida ( who went on to have her own show called ' Good Times', which made a star of Jimmy Walker) who also spoke her mind. I am not sure how many of these different shows have content online, but you if enjoy 'Golden Girls' you will enjoy them as well. All these shows have the quick jabs and retorts in them as well. They were all classic US Tv from the 70s and 80s.
“You were a porker!” Nearly choked and got the best ab workout in a long time. Totally caught me off guard! I love comedy when it was allowed to be funny!
Here's something that will blow your mind: Rue McCalanahan, who played Blanche, was in her 50s! When the show debuted, she was 51. Bea Arthur (Dorthy) and Betty White (Rose) were both 61. Estelle Getty, the actress who played the cranky Sophia, mother to Dorthy, was in real life a year younger than Bea Arthur! There's a phenomenon in sociology where people look younger or older than we perceive them to be. I wish I could think of the name of it. When we look back at people or actors from other times when they were young and try to guess their age, it can be surprising when we find out how old they actually are. Just take any yearbook from someone from, say, my generation (Gen-X) or my mom's generation (boomer) and compare what a 17-year-old then looks like to what a 17-year-old looks like now and it's actually pretty striking to note the visual difference in how we perceive the ages.
More people smoked in the past. Also, our diets are better today with access to fresh produce available year-round. But we do have more processed food now, maybe those preservatives are keeping us looking younger...lol ..
They were a magical group of ladies. They fit together on screen perfectly. It's rare that a show can get laughs throughout generations and The Golden Girls does not disappoint.
