Exactly. It is 24 miles long and has a 65-mph speed limit along most of its length. The speed limit drops to 45-mph for a few hundred yards at the north end by the toll booths and is 35 mph for a few hundred yards at the south end as you exit the bridge into the New Orleans metro area. Tolls are only collected on the southbound side and is currently $6 for two axles. The bridge also has its own dedicated police force and is heavily patrolled. In way of comparison, the island of Great Britain is 80,823 square miles, and the whole UK is 94,058 square miles. While the 5 largest Great Lakes cover 94,250 square miles! So, the UK is almost exactly as large as the Great Lakes… if you only count the largest 5 lakes. for flood protection the lakes are never filled to 100% full and are lowered right before the rainy season , that way when the flood waters come they can gather in the lake while the dam is letting the water out at a flow that will not flood the down stream areas. also on larger rivers there will be several dams with several lakes able to collect water.

His list is for lakes entirely in a single State. If we counted shared lakes, the Great Lakes are the size of the UK, so the list would be very different. It takes about 30 minutes to drive across the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. We flew into New Orleans for training, then drove to one of our company's other locations. I remember looking out the car window from the back seat when we first got on the bridge as I talked with my colleagues about the new program we were launching. Looked up a very long while later as we talked and realized we were still on the bridge. I was incredibly surprised about how long it was as someone who had never even heard of it before we drove across it.

The small town of "Truth or Consequences" in New Mexico changed its name in 1950 to that of a popular radio game show. In return, they hosted at least one broadcast of the show. The town's original name was Hot Springs. The "Finger Lakes" in New York were excavated by glaciers during an Ice Age, and then filled when the glaciers melted. That's why they run nearly due north-to-south.

Regarding flood protection, there will be lakes and reservoirs that are downstream, sometimes several, so that when there is heavy rain or in places that get snow runoff into rivers from the mountains like California, they can open dams, let water flow downstream into said lake or reservoir so that it doesn't back up and flood many of the flood prone places upstream. they are often places to just store excess water in the rainy season so it doesn't overflow and flood places.

Down down stream river flow is a determining factor for Corp of engineers to facilitate/stabilize flow for barge traffic along the major navigable rivers. They hold back water when the rivers are running high due to rain and open up when low.

Hi guys, I'm from Louisiana, and crossing the Lake Pontchartrain bridge takes roughly half an hour, depending on traffic and whether the weather is foggy. The water in the lake is brackish, that is, mostly fresh water mixed with some salt water. It's less salty during periods of heavy rain, when all of the runoff water dilutes it more. During dry spells it's saltier.

Truth or Consequences (New Mexico) was originally named Hot Springs. In 1950, the radio game show Truth or Consequences held a contest where the host, Ralph Edwards, announced that it would air the 10th anniversary show in the first town that changed its name to that of the show. Trust me, when you were born in the town -- especially during the years when the TV version of the show was still very popular with its host Bob Barker (yes, that Bob Barker) -- you learned the history. That Ralph Edwards returned to the town every May, coincident with the town's annual Fiesta, only reenforced the history lesson. For me, visiting Elephant Butte Lake meant only one thing: feeding peanuts to the squirrels. (Hey, it was the 60s, the Internet wasn't even invented yet.)

One of the interesting things about Oneida Lake in New York is that its maximum depth is only 35 feet, so it's remarkably shallow. Meanwhile, less than an hour away are Green Lake and Round Lake, both of which are so deep for their surface area that they are "meromictic": sunlight doesn't penetrate all the way to the bottom, so the upper and lower layers of water don't mix. Also, if you've heard of Oneida flatware/silver: it started as a religious colony on the shore of Oneida Lake.

Visit some canyons in the Wasatch Mountains, and a couple of the National Parks farther south. You’ll see the Great Salt Lake when you land in SLC: the airport is right next to it. No need to bother visiting it in person - it does smell, as many have mentioned. It's a testament to American engineering that so many of the largest lakes in the country are man made lakes and reservoirs . We came here , looked around and said " More Water " ! My home state of South Carolina is crossed by many rivers and streams , but all of our lakes are reservoirs . I live not too far from Lake Jocassee . It was created in 1973 by damming a mountain river . There's a sunken town with a few remains of an abandoned town lying on its 300 foot ( 91m ) deep bottom . The lake is an attraction for sport anglers and scuba divers . It's clear mountain waters allow divers to submerge to the bottom with good visibility of a sunken lodge building . Lake Jocasse is located in Devil's Fork State Park , therefore , the shores are uninhibited . Nature walkers can find four waterfalls feeding nearby into the lake . BTW . The film Deliverence starring Burt Reynolds , John Voight , and Ned Beatty was filmed there before the dam was built , although the locale in the film was set in the neighboring state of Georgia . Be warned before viewing Deliverence . It's a NSFW film and contains $exual \ /iolence .

Damns are built along rivers upstream from areas that are prone to flooding so that they can restrict the flow of the river downstream. The lakes can support massive amounts of rainfall without flooding and then after the rain stops the water can be slowly drained from the lake at a steady speed to maintain the normal flow of the river.

I've driven the 24-mile Lake Pontchartrain Causeway thousands of times. It normally takes about 30 minutes to cross it, but sometimes the weather is bad, or it gets really foggy where they either restrict traffic to one lane and use escort cars to cross in an hour or more. Sometimes it gets so bad that they shut it down entirely. There are other bridges that cross this lake too, but this is the longest. I remember crossing the HWY 11 bridge once from Slidell to New Orleans East. It was so foggy that I couldn't see the hood ornament on the front of my car, but had to open the door so I could look down and see the stripe painted in the road, driving blind at 5mph to cross it, as once on the bridge there is no going back. I used to cross the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway daily for decades for work and was once hit by a large waterspout (a tornado over water) on the bridge. The traffic had stopped, and it looked like a wall of water hit the bridge. No one went over, but the minivan in front of me was turned sideways by the impact of the wind and water. It was super scary, that's for sure.

There are many different specialized strategies for lakes as as flood control primarily its treated as a bucket when it's dry season they keep it as full as possible to provide drinking water and/or electricity for the surrounding area . When the wet season hits typically the lake is held at a lower percentage of full pond this allows the lake to absorb typical / normal rain events without with out the risk of flooding while still providing retention for normal water needs. In the event that heavy or extended rain is eminent they will draw down lakes starting with the one closest to the ocean and then sequentially draw those above it to provide staged retention. This allows them to limit the maximum flood water height. When/if they were to receive more water then they where capable of handling the lakes work as speed bumps to hopefully slow the water rise enough for proper evacuation to higher ground

Lake Ponchitrain Bridge: In good conditions and driving at the speed limit, it takes just under half an hour to cross the bridge. However, it’s important to note that in poor conditions, such as rain or fog, the trip can take longer. In such conditions, it may take up to 45 minutes to complete the crossing.

I had to go to Salt Lake City several times for work purposes, and I visited the Great Salt Lake while I was there. I thought its smell was really bad. The surrounding streams and mountains were impressive though. I did go to SLC once when they had an inversion. Basically all the pollution was trapped in the valley. It was the only time that I could taste and feel pollution in the air. That wasn't a very pleasant experience and was surprised because you expect clean air in the mountains.

Just thought I'd add that during one of my commecrial fishing trips to Alaska. We had our boat pulled from the ocean and trucked to Lake Liamna and drove the boat across and down the river to bristol bay. I think it took 13 plus hours to cross it going length wise.

Yes a few natural lakes and most reservoirs swell with rain water. During excessive rainfall this retention of water allows the water flowing in rivers to remain at an amount which they can handle rather than overflowing their banks and flooding areas nearby. I want you to be aware that there are many larger lakes but the list is only lakes which are not shared beyond the state boundaries. Many large lakes are so large that of course they cross into another state and become ineligible for the list.

The lakes help with flood control by being a large area the can accept a huge amount of water that would be rushing down the rivers and streams from run off after very heavy rains. Think about them being balloons filling with water from a faucet but have hose on the bottom. The balloon expands to accept the volume of water and control the amount exiting.

Depends on traffic, anywhere from 30 to 40mins on the low side and hour to two on the high side. It's not a deep lake and there is lake Bourne connected to it in the north and lake Maur pas to the south with a lot of swamp land. There are also locks to the north and south. These are for flood control.

Using a reservoir for flood control entails lowering the water level prior to the rainy / flood season - then allowing the lake to fill - controlling the outflow to reduce flooding while not filling the lake too fast. It is a nuanced process and varies with regions due to differences in water flow patterns.

And these all pale in comparison to the Great Lakes as well. Pinning the comparison to the biggest in each state, much like with our rivers, rather than biggest total or in the case of the Great Lakes, the ones we share with our little sister to the north, nerfs our water quite a bit.

You said something about the water of Lake Ouachita looking purple…I’m shocked he didn’t mention that Lake Ouachita in Arkansas is one of the cleanest lakes in the country (placing second or third). It’s a very popular recreational lake just west of Hot Springs in the Ouachita Mtns of W AR/E OK; its a great area for travel/outdoor recreation in general, in a National Forest, and the first in a series of three lakes created on the Ouachita River near Hot Springs, which has been a resort town for well over a century and is the nation’s smallest National Park. Besides the thermal waters (and obvious outdoor recreation nearby especially on the lakes), it’s also a popular area for rock hounds, especially when it comes to quartz. (Or the Crater of Diamonds, about a hour south.) I’m 30 minutes from Hot Springs and about an hour from lake Ouachita. Arkansas doesn’t get near as much attention as other states, and we kinda like it that way. Its called The Natural State for a reason: the rolling hills, streams, and trees of N and W AR are a great place to go hide away in a nice Airbnb in the middle of nowhere, and just enjoy nature. The Ouachita and Ozark mtns are technically hills, but it’s an area very similar to Southern Appalachia in both geography and culture (settled primarily by the same Scots-Irish), but lacking the coal industry. These days, there are LOTS of people moving here, especially from TX and CA, for lower cost of living etc, and the Bentonville-Fayetteville-Rogers area of NWA has grown too fast, and gotten overcrowded and frankly, pretty bougie. A friend recently got back from a weekend up there and made the comment that he can remember when you could actually find at least one restaurant on the square (in downtown Fayetteville, near the U of A campus) that didn’t serve kale. 😂 Don’t get me wrong-it’s still a wonderful area and a great place to live. I just don’t want to see overcrowding take away the very essence of what makes this place special.

Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada is a little over 12,000 square miles. Great Slave Lake is just a little south in the same territory and is over 11,000 square miles. Both are bigger than Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, but much smaller than Lake Michigan.

Deep Creek lake in Maryland is gorgeous. We had a vacation house right on the lake when I was growing up, and we'd usually leave DC on both Thanksgiving and the week of Christmas to spend the holiday there with other family members that would join us. My parents sold it when I went off to college, but I have a ton of great memories there.

I live near and own a boat on a lake in Arkansas that is the first in a chain of three lakes in Arkansas and Missouri dammed off of the White River that provide flood control for the Mississippi River. Essentially, heavy rains fill the lakes and the dams release water at a rate that is manageable for the downstream areas. Slowing down the water is essential to stopping flooding. Since the lake I live on is the first in the chain, it fluctuates its height (lake levels in the U.S. are referred to by elevation above sea level, i.e. our local lake’s normal water level is around 1,125ft above sea level) more than the other two. Owning a dock on our lake is a pain. You have to adjust and move your dock in and out a lot. If it rains a lot and you don’t move it in, your walkway ends up out in the water. If the lake drops and you don’t move it out, it could end up on dry land and seriously damage the dock and your boats.
