You don't have to ever watch hockey (which I don't) to really appreciate this guy's commentary and analysis of the game. and the quality of these highlights.
Valeri Neschuskin. Losing him is a big reason we lost in the 2nd round. He definitely is fighting some demons. Wish him well. He was doing amazing in the first round. 😢😢😢
I haven't been keeping track, but somebody pointed put the other day that for seven or more years now, in each series, the team with the most Canadian players has won every series and cup
That's exactly how I pick who I'm going to root for in the playoffs (once my team Toronto inevitably gets booted from the playoffs!). Of the 4 teams remaining, Edmonton is the highest at 20, followed by Dallas at 15, Florida at 12 and Rangers only have 5, which is why I'd like to see a Oilers v Panthers Final Series.
Connor McJesus deserves to have his name on the cup. I rooting for the oily tiny town Edmonton here on out. From Chicago, love seeing Brits catch some playoff hockey. Its the best action sport in the world IMO. Cheers.
Nobody deserves to get their name on the cup unless they win the cup. That along with the fact that it's a genuine historical artifact is what makes it special. It's special because it's hard.
Speaking as a dual citizen of both UK (by descent; my Dad) and Canada (by birth), it's good to see some Brits commenting on hockey. I find football quite boring compared to (ice) hockey. I need a sport with higher scoring than just 0-0 or 1-0. (But I don't like basketball either simply because points are too easy to come by ... in basketball, why not just spot each team 80 points and play the last 2 minutes of the game?!?) Unlike you I would never be able to comment on soccer, rugby or field hockey (soccer is too low scoring with no fistfights, I don't understand what's going on in rugby, and I've never ever seen a game of field hockey being played). I love the fights in hockey: "I once went to a boxing match and a hockey game broke out!"
Not that I completely agree with the current playoff structure, but to answer Daz's question at the end, the playoff format lergely has to do with timezones and travel distance. If Vancouver and Florida had to play a 7 game series in the first round, they'd be taking 7 hour flights 5 times in a series. This can create an unfair advantage for other teams if you imagine a series between Edmonton and Calgary where players only have to fly like an hour and a half to play each other. They'd be less exhausted after a series. Maybe the biggest reason though is viewership timezones. When Edmonton and Calgary play, they can play at 7pm and both fanbases are happy. If Vancouver and Florida play, you either play the game at like 4pm in Vancouver which is hard to catch, or you play it at 10pm in Florida which is arguably worse. Viewership and fan engagement drops off, and the NHL makes less money. There are many ideas on changing the playoff format, and the current setup definitely has downsides and tradeoffs, but timezones and travel times will always have to be a consideration.
I'm rooting for Dallas since I don't have a dog in the fight but I do think McDavid deserves to have "Stanley Cup Champion" on his resume. I was bummed Vancouver got knocked out because their Cinderella run was pretty awesome to watch. The best thing of the matchups that wasn't shown leading up to conference finals was the Dallas v. Colorado where it went to 2OT and Matt Duchene scored. He used to play for Colorado and scored in front of the home team and against his old team to win the game and the series. They are versus Edmonton now so whoever wins this matchup is who I hope wins the whole thing lol.
Hockey Junkie normally covers the montreal canadiens mostly but he's covering the playoffs in 5 minute videos (game by game) and he's very funny. guess where he's from (accent)... only 4 teams left now.
Prior to the 1981 - 82 season it was 1 vs 16 so the Stanley Cup Finals in 1980 was New York Islanders vs the Philadelphia Flyers even though both teams were in the same conference and division. The Campbell Conference and the Patrick Division. In 1982 playoffs they changed the format to be similar to how it is today just the conferences and divisions were named something different. Prince of Wales Conference which is now the Eastern Conference. Campbell Conference which is now the Western Conference. They had four divisions Adams, Patrick, Norris and Smythe which are now the Atlantic, Metro, Central and Pacific divisions respectively.
The annual IIHF World Championship from Prague is going on right now as well, and it has been outstanding as usual. It's Canada vs. Switzerland and Sweden vs. Czech in the Semifinals. I actually prefer this tournament because the ice surface is 4 meters wider than NHL which allows for more skill and wide-open hockey. NHL is too much dump and chase hockey for me. Lots of NHL talent throughout the tournament: Hedman for Sweden, Pastrnak for Czech, Bedard for Canada, and a lot more. Great stuff.
I had to watch my favorite team (Boston) lose in the stanley cup finals twice in 6 years (2013 & 2019) the heartbreak I experienced was something I wouldn't wish on any other fan base
Yeah, well try being a Maple Laughs fan and see how you feel! I haven't seen them lift the cup my ENTIRE life ... and I'm 54 years old! (I was rooting for Boston against the Canucks a few years ago; once the Leafs are out, I cheer on the team with the most Canadian players -- and that year it was Boston.)
It use to be like for playoffs back in the 90's until Betman took over use to be Patrick, Adams, Norris, Smythe. No east vs west all teams were in there divisions weather east or west. Best playoff hockey that way
This might be way out of left field for y'all but I think I'll be cool content. Yall should invest into getting the new college football game coming out soon and post it on this sports channel. I think it'll be really cool.
Big weekend in Indianapolis. Pacers Vs. Celtics in Indy. Indy500 race on Sunday too. At least Half a Million People heading to town. Caitlin Clark and the Fever Playing Away in Las Vegas.
I think Kane might just address this issue. He was booted out of the game the last time these 2 teams met. There's no one in Florida that the Oilers need to be worried about.... They've got both Kane and Perry.
You do realize that none of these ppl in this video are sportscasters or are trying to be sportscasters right? Also, what holy hill do you sit on to be so high and mighty when probably nobody knows who you are lol
@@jcsandstorm919 So, I'm not allowed to offer my expert opinion because it goes against what YOU THINK?! So your opinions are better than mine and I should shut up? I worked at ESPN, Spanky! I edited Super Bowl highlights, Stanley Cup Finals, World Series. I covered the OJ SImpson trial. I edited the obituary on the death of Mickey Mantle and many other stories. I worked with Chris Berman, Keith Olbermann, Dan Patrick, Stuart Scott, Steve Levy, Karl Ravech, dozens of former pro-athletes who went on to become sports analysts, etc.. I've done my share of writing long form packages in my career. I think I am more than qualified to comment and criticize as I see fit and am well within my rights to do so. @@jcsandstorm919 I'm not sure what this guys' 20 yrs in sportscasting made him think that this was trying to be "hip" or "funny". It sounds like breaking down the playoffs in a regular way people who are into hockey actually talk. Just a weird take by Mr. Firebird.
