The gravy is easy as it is pretty much just a bechamel sauce with lots minced sausage. You adjust the seasoning for the sauce as you please, but I would stick with seasonings that work with the sausage. Onions, garlic, salt and paper really all you need. I've added the gravy to macaroni. But there is just something about having it on a crispy, and fluffy biscuit. The problem I have with most biscuits and gravy is that the gravy tends to be bland and doesn't have enough of the sausage flavor in it. So a I like to add more fat to the mixture at the beginning such as butter or lard, and that infuses the oil with as much flavor as possible, then I will let the sauce stew together for like 20 minutes just so those tastes marry.
Southern kids grow up with a memories of your Mema (grandma) making homemade biscuits often baked in an iron skillet. With sausage gravy made from scratch. I tell you what, southern cooks are amongst the best in the world and I stand by that.
The moment I’ve been waiting for is here at last! That is definitely the most solid first attempt at Biscuits and Gravy I’ve ever seen-Pillsbury are very good hands to be left in. I’m glad to see American biscuits gaining traction in the UK.
@@Mrhandfriends If you have a crockpot, I might suggest Pulled Pork for a future recipe. It’s a classic, hearty Southern comfort food that has a rich, slow-cooked taste that’s akin to barbecue, but no grill required. Great on its own, with a sweet, tomato/vinegar-based Barbecue Sauce, or on bread rolls as sliders. It’s one of those dishes you don’t make just once. (Recipe in Discord)
if you'd like my own personally developed (southern man) biscuit recipe, i am happy to share. i call them, "Grim's Badass Biscuits". the recipe is tasty, can be made into cut or drop biscuits (i prefer drop biscuits so the gravy has more places to hang onto), easy to make (to mess them up you have to be *_trying_* to do it), no kooky ingredients, and all the info is in metric too. an ex of mine still has my recipe stuck to her fridge even 14 years after we broke up. 😁 i can also give you some tips on making the cream gravy really easy. you can freehand it without needing any recipes or packets.
As someone who was born and bred in the south, I am so thrilled that you all enjoyed the greatest breakfast known to humankind biscuits and gravy! Be careful with the salt because the sausage is typically salty enough but I always put a generous amount of black pepper on mine. God bless!
i laughed when you said a "generous" amount of gravy you should see what a genuine biscuits and gravy serving looks like in the U.S. you basically can't see anything but gravy and maybe some scrambled eggs everything is hidden beneath the gravy my favorite is chicken fried steak and gravy
A valiant first attempt at proper biscuits and gravy. Good biscuits and gravy are like a warm hug from your Grandmother. They are a breakfast staple of any southern kitchen. The best are from a southern grandma who has been making biscuits for 50 or 60 years and has the method down pat. Well done for a first attempt.
Great to see Mr H taking care of Baby H this time! Laugh out loud! Looks good! You know that you could make banana bread with those bananas! Perfect ripeness for sweet banana bread!
Glad you liked it! Sausage gravy is easy to make from scratch. Just fry your sausage till it browns, then remove it from the pan and leave the grease in the pan. Add a few tablespoons of flour and make a roux. (That’s just browning the flour in the grease) when it’s brown, slowly add milk and stir constantly until you get about half a skillet full and it begins to thicken. As soon as it thickens put the sausage back in and serve it over biscuits. It should be thick but still able to flow over the biscuits. Most people open the biscuits into two halves before adding the gravy. That, some eggs and hash browns and your tummy will be smiling all the way till lunch🐝🤗❤️
@@deborahdanhauer8525 Could be worse. I'd made gravy before, but when I was working on the mother sauces in culinary school, I think I was prepping a bechamel and had added too much flour so it came out looking like mashed potatoes. I had to spend some time fixing that.
I have been wondering if they have sausage or just sausages. In any case cutting the sausages open worked and she did a good job. I guess they’ll have to make the rest of the biscuits to try with butter, with honey, and with jam.
A quick tip on retrieving egg shells - shell attracts shell. The shell fragment is usually repelled by your finger, but if you use the broken shell half to scoop it out, it’s actually attracted by it. That has saved me a lot of frustration from chasing shell fragments around.
A really yummy breakfast is biscuits like that with butter and either honey or your favorite jam or jelly! I admit I cheat and usually use Pillsbury or some other brand of frozen or canned biscuits bc they're good and super easy.
I recently tried frozen " southern " biscuits & they are really good! They plump up & are so good. Pillsbury I believe?? I still make homemade gravy though 😋
I love buttermilk biscuits. My grandmother made the best biscuits and gravy. She would always make them at least once when I would visit for the week in the summertime.
I'm from a long line of Southern cooks in Kentucky. My kids always loved waking up to a big breakfast of eggs, sausage, bacon, hashbrowns and biscuits and gravy from scratch. I did too as a kid. Yum! Great first go! There are some tutorials online on how to make it from scratch without the mix. It's pretty simple, just takes a bit of practice.
Pioneer country gravy is damn near perfect, always use that. I insist on biscuits from scratch, which is still not difficult, but soft real butter is essential, as well as very fresh baking powder. Now, it takes longer, but if you break up the sausage with your hands in a cup or so of water, it makes a much better consistency. Once the water has evaporated, it must be browned. I prefer a deep brown for flavor, but it's up to you. It looks close, but use a coffee cup or something to press out the dough when it's rolled to about 3/4 inch thick, perfect rounds.
You did great!!! We cut are biscuits in half, put a little of butter on the biscuit and then top with gravy. Love that you are actually making the recipes!!!! Wonderful video!!
I have some recipes I need to get your way and I also think I have a package nearly ready for you. Hang in there, we'll make you a Southern Belle yet. 😆 either that or a little hilbilly.
An insider tip: if you make drop biscuits like that (also known as cat head biscuits): 1. Make them bigger, which will ensure you get more of the supersoft fluffy interior. 2. Aim for "cream color with wheat tips" rather than toffee colored exterior. This reduces the crunchiness of the biscuit's crust. 3. Serve in a bowl. First, some gravy on the bottom. Split the biscuit, and snuggle it crust-down into the gravy. Cover that biscuit up with more gravy (wet it up). Wait a few minutes for optimal crust softening. 4. Expect the aftermath: you WILL feel like having a lie-down. I call it a Post-Carb Coma.
Hi from Texas! Biscuits and gravy are best when made from scratch. I'm kinda ok with the package biscuit mix but cannot eat gravy unless it's made homemade from drippings from cooked meat.
@@Mrhandfriends it would save you from using a second pan you all have to clean. It’s a “one pot” meal when you do it from scratch. Nobody needs more pots and pans in the sink! 😄
@@Mrhandfriends if you enjoyed the package mix you will most definitely love the gravy made from scratch if it's made right. It's easy but some people have trouble with it (hence the birth of package mix). Not all gravies are created equal! I hope one day y'all will be able to experience it! Take care! I look forward to more of your videos!
@@Mrhandfriends Try getting sausage made at a butcher’s shop and explain what you are trying to do. Tell them you need a large amount of sausage. This might get you better results than cutting the casing away on breakfast links.
a biscuit in London English = a cookie A biscuit in American English = a fluffy baked (usually light and flaky) type of (scone per the British one - but the scone usually is harder and smaller [not as flaky]). Scones are usually served with some sort of preserve and or jam. - Sweets in British English - candies --
Yeah I'd give the recipe but it's a prize winning recipe which means I cant give it out but if u ever come here I'll make it for you, it's a Lil spicy and will stick to ur ribs with just a slight burn in the back of ur throat, it's awesome
Believe it or not when I was a young girl in the south age 9 or so, the working mom across the way would pay me to make biscuits from scratch for her and her family in her kitchen before she got home. She taught me the recipe and I made them again and again. Got paid though...50 cents I think. Homemade are much better. Buttermilk makes them better at least more flavorful. Hmmm now you all are making me hungry. Think I will make myself a batch. You can make your own béchamel white sauce from scratch too. You all have that tradition. Keep up the great shows. And do not fake it if you do not like a particular dish. No offense taken. All is an acquired taste.
Way to Go Mrs. H!!!🎉🎊🎉 I think you did an awesome 😎👍 job! First time 🏅🏆 biscuits and gravy 😋 YUMMY!! I have been making them for years and you still did better than me 🤭My Daddy makes the best gravy, but he uses bacon 🥓. I've tried and tried to learn how but... YOU are a natural! I really think if you watched a tutorial for homemade (not mix) gravy 😋 you would like it much better. That way you can control the amount of salt and pepper. Your biscuits were just amazing! Around here, we use canned or frozen 🤭 I hope we get to see more 'Cooking with Mrs.H.' videos 😊👍
Hi Mrs. H, love the video and great to see you! Mr H and Elana in the stroller waking in and out of the shot is funny! I love biscuits and gravy! It's my favorite food in tbe whole world! My favorite breakfast place here make biscuits and gravy from scratch (which means homemade) The biscuits are light and fluffy and break apart. So good!
Need some butter on those biscuits. I usually brush some melted butter on the biscuits while they are cooking. About 2 minutes before they a done. Also, try splitting the biscuits before adding the gravy on them.
Bless your heart Mrs.H, you seemed to be so nervous ❤️❤️❤️ even bad biscuits are better than no biscuits, and yours looked great especially for someone who isn't familiar with them! Congratulations from SC! ❤️🙌🏻🙌🏻
Biscuits and gravy are not just a Southern dish. we eat it all across the US. I grew up on it and I live in Northern CA. That "chicken" on the package cover for the gravy is actually a "chicken fried steak" and not chicken.. Take a round steak and pound it thin, dip in a flour batter and fry it and serve with the gravy. However......you CAN do the same thing to a nice thick breast of chicken. Just pound it out thin (like doing a schnitzel) dredge in flour and fry and serve with the gravy. There is a local diner here in town that serves the "chicken fried chicken" and it is amazing and I actually prefer the chicken to the steak. Nice job Mrs H!!
Smash that 👍for Mr H and friends, now y’all have to try chocolate gravy. It’s a favorite here in NC mountains Mrs H you did great and a natural on the videos 🎥💯👍
@@Mrhandfriends yes I’m not really sure the recipe. But it was one of my favorite treats fixed by my grandma and women in the church my dad preached in. I’ll get you guys the recipe in next couple of days. Thanks Mrs H and Mr H and Friends. 👍👍💯
to make proper southern biscuits always use buttermilk(it adds a bit of fat). a bit of a tip, take the biscuit dough out of the bowl, knead it on a floured counter, dust the top of the dough with flour so the cutter doesn't stick, you can use a evaporated milk can with holes punched on top as vent holes. oh, roll out the biscuits out to about a half a inch thick.
Love that you made something to try it. I enjoy other reactors, The Beasleys, as well as You New Zealand Family. MNZF has a 13 yr old daughter who is developing her own channel making recipes sent in. Right now she is making every US state's, state food. I'd love to see more of these types of videos. Mr and Mrs H, you both seem very genuine and sincere. Love his Reese's reactions and how she cries when hearing a touching tribute. Keep asking content and I'll keep watching!
I love watching Atlanta do her cooking segments. I keep hoping she will just start her own channel because she is a superb cook and she is so young! When she gets a bit older she will be unbeatable in the kitchen.
Awesome! Please keep this series going. I love biscuits and gravy. The only issue, is that whenever my parents made it, it ment I had alot of yard work, and house repairs to look forward to. It was always the start to a long day, but its a delicious start.
This was used by large southern families to stretch their food budget. My grandmother in 1940's Appalachia would take the amount of sausage that you used and stretch it with plenty of biscuits and gravy to feed her, my grandfather, their seven children and the couple of aunts, uncles, or cousins that would be staying with them. Even with the much greater gravy to sausage ratio, the sausage drippings permeates and flavors the gravy. So, 9-12 people could be fed on a small amount of meat.
Chicken and dumplings. Ohhhh my goodness. My favorite cold weather supper. Your biscuit mix could be subbed in for the drop biscuits in chicken and dumplings. Just depends on if you prefer fluffy or chewy dumplings.
I have the easiest home made biscuit recipe - 1 cup of heavy cream and 1 cup of self rising flour. That’s it. I also add 1 Tablespoon of white vinegar to the cream and let it sit for about 15 minutes. That is a substitute for buttermilk, which makes the biscuits so much better. Mix it all together until you get a rough dough (I do this part with a spoon) then turn it out onto a floured surface and then knead it a bit and then roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick. Cut with a round cookie cutter - a jar lid works well, too. Put them on an ungreased pan and bake in a 400 F preheated oven for about 18 to 20 minutes. I always make home made gravy, too with bacon drippings, but that’s more of a visual thing and really just takes practice.
As a southern I have to say that was a really good first try that gravy looked good may have to try British breakfast sausage gravy. Also your little baby it too adorable. 😊
Not a Southerner here - though descended from some 😀 - and for a first try, that looks great! I don't do the gravy, but I do make biscuits from scratch. When you run out of mix, look up the biscuit recipe from the Joy of Cooking cookbook online. But be sure it's from the 70s edition or earlier; they went and made the modern reprints healthy, and bah! Anyway, that's a good recipe. It also gives directions for rolled & cut biscuits, or drop biscuits like you made. The only difference is adding more milk so you can drop the dough by spoonfuls. I use lard (maybe leaf lard in the UK?) for my biscuit shortening. Aren't biscuits nice and fluffy? Now you know what everyone is raving about. 😄 And if you add some sugar, you can use those for making strawberry shortcake! Made with either white cake or sweetened biscuits for the cake part, but I like biscuits so much better. Cake gets too mushy for my taste with all the juice from the strawberries. Plus using biscuits is a faster way to the yum! Oh my word, you have no idea. Those are another divine treat.
Your makeup is so pretty in this video, and your hair looks great up. I had commented on Mr H having nice hair on another video (can’t remember which one now) but I’ve been binge watching your videos and you said something about cutting his hair, so no wonder it looks nice! You two are so cute together, just a really nice family. It’s refreshing.
The cream gravy should very good with chicken cooked in a variety of ways. I come from a part of the US where there are a lot of Amish people, and even some non-Amish like my family ate creamed chicken over waffles for lunch or dinner. You shred your roasted chicken, often left over from Sunday dinner, with a fork and add it to the cream gravy. Serve it over regular waffles from a mix, or if you have leftover mashed potatoes as well, you can make savory homemade waffles that incorporate the potatoes.
I grew up in Mississippi and every Sunday morning after church we'd have the family over for a big breakfast . Biscuits and gravy , ham, eggs ,grits ,hash browns coffee, Orange juice.
Great Video H Family! When you come back to the U.S., come to the South and have a Southern Grandma make it homemade for you, OMG! Fun fact, the dish was made to stretch out meat for everyone and to feed farmers a hearty Breakfast to keep them going for the majority of the day. ❤🇺🇸🇬🇧❤!
Nothing like homemade biscuits, gravy, Virginia ham, eggs, hash browns and sliced tomatoes! Well, there’s also southern fried chicken, potato salad, fresh green beans, sliced fresh cucumbers, tomatoes and biscuits. And, of course, blackberry or peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream on top for dessert! Oh! Chicken and dumplings, too! Grew up in the south (Virginia) learning to make all those and more from wonderful southern cooks.
European hack: think of American biscuits and gravy as "savory scones topped with German Ramnschnitzel sauce" except the sauce has bits of sausage instead of mushrooms. The more meat drippings and butter you add the better. Chicken Fried Steak (CFS) originated as the German-Austrian version of schntizel when they got to Texas in the 1800's because veal was rare and they just pounded the abundant beef steaks flat until they were tender. Biscuits and gravy and gravy-topped CFS are sometimes part of the same dish because you can mop up the sauce with either the meat first and later the biscuit pieces.
scones are too dry compared to an american biscuit. scones are sweeter, drier, have fruit sometimes, are made with cream and eggs. biscuits dont have eggs or cream its usually buttermilk and theyre more soft and typically are not sweet
Yeah a scone would be the closest comparison and even then, they're different enough to be their own thing. On the surface of it, they look like scones, but just enough of a difference in their makeup to be a different experience.
Biscuits and gravy are the bomb. I appreciate you being adventurous and trying a dish that is near to my heart. Love your channel and as much as you fascinated with The States, my wife and I are most definitely Anglophises. If you can find a good recipe for pasty pies I would be all over making that.
That’s funny you posted this particular video because this is exactly what I ate for supper tonight! Lol! I buy the same Pioneer Gravy Mix that you used, but I buy their biscuit style gravy instead of sausage gravy. It has far less salt and no pepper, that way I can add my own. But at any rate, congratulations on your first attempt at biscuits n’ gravy! I’m glad y’all liked it. 🙂
Great job! You made this Oklahoman proud. I am not a good cook like my mom & grandma. They make the gravy in the cooked sausage pan w/ drippings w/ flour & milk. I can't lol but the packets with a good bit of pepper takes care of the cravings.
you should try making the biscuits from scratch, but biscuits and gravy is a popular dish for a good reason. Also, try making the gravy with a meat you enjoy if it's something other than sausage because you'll find that there are many more recipes that look similar but have a different meat. Bacon gravy is another amazing one if you're into bacon, or chorizo
Mrs. H, I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. My mother/aunts did not make homemade biscuits. I have tried at least 10 times over my 65 years to make them. I even tried that mix that you just used, and a flop. I have to buy refrigerated or frozen. You did better on your first try than I did on ALL of mine. They make it look so easy on the You Tube videos. It's not easy for some of us. I am a decent recipe follower, and I am very good on sauces (my homemade gravy is the BEST!)....but biscuits have always gotten the best of me. You did fabulous IMHO.
Thank you so much, that means a lot. I will definitely try to make them from scratch, and gravy. Not because I want to try to show off if they work, but because I'll struggle to buy the packet mixes over here. Mrs H 💕
