Benjamin Britten opera is like watching and listening to a 20th century Guiseppi Verdi opera, the sort of disturbing material he would of written for King Lear!? I still think the most watchable opera of our time and all is Alma Deucher Cinderella, I keep watching it.
My father took me to see this opera at the Lyric in Chicago nearly 50 years ago. I barely remember it, but certain scenes are etched in my memory-I just don't have the full context. Watching this now so I can understand what it was I saw when I was 10.
The performance looks and sounds great. The disturbingly ever-present men in the highchairs represent judgmental members of society who are always there to guard the norms and watch for deviance.
