I don’t think so. Spain were always the better team at euros 24. So his only actual ‘failing’ and time he underachieved with England in a major tournament was Euros 2021. And even then, that was England first euros final EVER and he only lost on pens. In every other tournament Southgate either surpassed expectations or lost to the better team. Boring, defensive manager to watch who should’ve left after Euros 2021, but I’m ngl you can’t argue with his results which were miles clear of his predecessors
@@silvesta5027 I agree that Spain was the best team, but England's overall trajectory throughout that tournament felt like they were failing upwards despite having the most talented squad on paper. I understand that having the best squad on paper doesn't equate to silverware but it really helps if you have that kind of talent to work with. On paper, Southgate probably had a better campaign compared to the managers before him, but that means nothing due to the general lack of competition in the current decade and his ineptitude in using the squad to its full potential.
if yall saw the match, you would have seen spain cooked england so hard, that their entire defence became tired. the 2nd goal which oyarzabal scored was because of england's defence sleeping. spain were going to win anyways, but southgate not starting palmer the entire euros should be considered a felony.

I feel like he took the team as far as he could, and he lacked the tactical ability to integrate all of England’s young attacking talent. Basically, I didn’t think him sticking around would improve us as a team. And that’s kind of what happened. The expectations on England shifted after that Euros, from a young team with potential to a world class one where winning major tournament was now expected. Southgate just wasn’t the guy for that kind of environment. As for ‘Southgate probably having a better campaign than the managers before him,’ change that to a ‘definitely.’ Like it or not, England has never had a more competitive era than the Southgate one. Cloaked in darkness, a pack of mongooses, their eyes glinting like shards of broken glass, prowled through the clearing. Time seemed to freeze as Nag watched in horror. They chowed down on the serpents' heads, stripping the meat clean from the bones, as if every morsel was a delicacy to be savored. The horror was complete. Not even the bones were left unmarred-this was annihilation, pure and unrelenting. Nag’s heart hammered in his chest, every inch of his body paralyzed by the carnage he had just witnessed.
