As an Emmy award editor from the 60s, 70s & 80s things have come a long way for sure. I worked at the largest post facility on the east coast of USA where we had (26) 2" quad tape machines (later some Sony 1") (4) film chains (we invented the pan/scan system) an AMPEX HS-100 slo-mo machine. In each of the 4 edit rooms we had Quantel squeeze zoom, AMPEX ADO, grass valley triple re-entry switcher, and if course a heavily modified CMX system that can use up to 26 selectable I/p sources. In a other room we had the first CMX-600 non linear edit console. The result from this was an EDL on an 8" floppy to be used in one of the online edit rooms Each edit room was setup like a living room with a big couch behind meb coffee table, small end tables on each side of the couch. The walls had carpet on them for sound absorbing and carpeted floors. Back then everyone smoked EXCEPT in the edit & film chain rooms. Had a lot of fun those days. I went from cutting tape using a grease pencil, to manual electronic editing (punch & pray), to using time code (using eeco editor) then onto CMX and lastly AVID NLE. Happily retired now, but I restore old 2" quad video tape machines as a hobby

Ive been in broadcast for 30 years and video for about 37 years so i know a lot of those systems. 👍

First: I most highly recommend the book, Vision and Art, the Biology of Seeing, by Margaret Livingstone. If, like myself, you are a newcomer to visual arts and / or someone who didn't take a formal course in video production, filmmaking or color grading, this book is a complete introduction to color theory, how the human eye perceives color, and how certain artists have made use of color. There are interesting insights and nuggets of practical information on every page. I purchased the Biology of Seeing a year ago, after Darren recommended it in another video. Making use of what I learned about color and light in this book, I've built a few interesting luma- and luminance-based transitions (learning Fusion is a separate challenge). For a "technical" book, it's written in a very easy to understand style, and the page layout presents the information clearly. Well done, Darren, recommending it again. And, second, thank you Darren for the terrific tour and slice of a day in the life. Have fun in Amsterdam.

20:51 I'm a Londoner now expat in QLD Australia since 1997, but miss my old UK hangouts. Nice place Brighton; the last time I was on that beach was when the Eleni B ran aground between the piers, which will tell how long ago. Got some nice shots for the archives but got frozen solid into the bargain. Love the videos. I'm moving from Vegas to FCP and now to DaVinci, so they've really helped the transition and thanks for taking the time and trouble to make them.

Thanks for the studio tour. It was everything I hoped for and more. Much as I loved geeking out to your set-up, the most important bit for me was the trip to the gym. As someone who has screwed up their health from sitting for wa-aaay too long in front of a computer, the importance of getting out, going to the gym, and staying healthy is vastly underrated. @JiriKrivanek Год назад
Definitely very interesting. Although a bit beyond the universe of the beginner/enthusiast. And it also explains to me why I was not able to find any video about "how to setup (reasonably cheap) HW for the color grading" - apparently, your high end pro equipment (probably also extremely pricy) keeps you in a safe distance from the low end issues (like "why the hell it all looks so nice on my noname screen but when I upload it to youtube it is miserable" - well your explanations of the scopes improved me a bit - thanks for that). So to be more concrete - if at one day you have no more great ideas for a "next episode", here may be something (hopefully not only interesting for me): - Explain all the variables (color transformations) along the way between the footage and the screen -- Footage -> DRV (aka input color transform - covered well by you) -- DVR timeline -> export (aka output color transform - covered well by you) -- DVR timeline -> (Mac)OS (???another color transform??? - I am able to find some DVR settings for this - LUTs - no idea how it plays with the entire chain - I was not able to find good explanation on this) -- (Mac)OS -> Screen (???yet another color transform??? - I can see some OS display settings - no idea how it plays with DVR and/or the screen chain - was not able to find any good explanation on this) -- Screen/Display itself (???yet another color transform??? either by the screen itself (I was able to find the screen switch to REG709 - but it produces rather ugly results) or just by imperfectness of the screen) - Also the terminology of the color spaces is a big mess for me (DVR calls color spaces some way, my OS different way, my screen also a bit different way) Just for your imagination: As I do not trust all the chain above provides me the right visual feedback during my attempts to "color grade", I am verifying my "color grades" by uploading it to YT and watching it on various devices - do not laugh too loud :))) Anyways, thank you for sharing your experience... I am learning a lot from it...

@@DarrenMostyn True, the touch screen autofocus is not exactly ideal. But... there is the DJI RS3 Pro with Lidar for autofocus if a person wanted to throw money at the issue.

Ahh Brighton, I'm just down the coast in Ebo (it's what I like to call it to make it sound cool). Studio looks amazing! I would love to have all that equipment (doesn't mean I'd have a clue how to use it or course). Great to see you at Resolve Con. Just catching up on the panel discussion because colour is basically a total mystery to me.

Loved the tour, I wish some of the footage had a greater DOF so the gear in the background wasn't so blurry, after all that is the stuff you were talking about. 🙂

sorry. We were in really bad light. When we lit the studio the monitors just glared and I really only had about 3 hours to record the tour. Took me 2 days to edit. Im aware its not great quality, but I just dont have the resources or time to film it like a promotional video. Hope it didnt ruin your enjoyment too much. I also know the audio is bad on the vlog bits. It will all get better in time. Im a full time colourist and RU-vid is just a side part of what I do. Thats whyy its taken me 6 months to actually record this! Glad you loved the tour anyway and your point made is a fair one. All the best, darren.

Interesting. Personally I can start off with a really tidy desk and in two weeks, it looks like a hurricane hit it. I respect people that have the vigilance to keep things tidy. Didn't see your bass guitar in the video. Maybe next time? Heal those ribs and feel better.

Sharp eyes - but its 29,661 now! Life is too short to read every email you get! Live a bit! People will get hold of you somehow if its important. I prob get 200 emails a day of which 4 need really answering - better things to do with my life tbh.

Thanks for the tour Darren :) I completely nerded out watching this. I really want to visit Brighton now!! One thing I still do not understand - how are you running scopes from your Resolve project on the Mac using a totally separate PC? Cheers man. PS - You need to carpet those stairs mate. Lucky you only broke 2 ribs...could have been worse!! FEEL BETTER!!
@DarrenMostyn
@DarrenMostyn Год назад
Hi Joey. Always good to hear from you. The scopes are being fed from my Ultrastudio to the PC. So my Ultrastudio feeds the PC, My hero grading monitor and my client monitor and the audio. Hope that helps. (Thunderbolt from MAC running Resolve to the Ultrastudio). Feeling much better on the ribs now thank you - not 100% but much better every day!

Really nice setup you’ve got there Darren. If you were wanting to be a bit more of a minimalist, say editing on the go, could you run a MacBook Pro with an iPad Pro displaying the source monitor? I’ve edit on a 27” IMac and the actual source monitor window is so small I can’t see anything. Cheers mate

Love the set up and I hope one day i can get there... Thoughts on the LG Oled a2. I am still new to this and on a budget. I am looking for a good clean feed monitor i can color grade off for weddings. I do have the sypder calibrator tool. Just looking for something That will work but will not break the bank.

Great stuff as usual Big D! Always a joy to see your content. Maybe I missed it, but what do you use for power management/UPS of all that gear in there? I'd like to hear the run-down. That is really a big deal where I'm at as there are sooooo many brown-outs going on. Yikes! 😲
@DarrenMostyn
@DarrenMostyn Год назад
yes I missed that in my tour and meant to show it. Behind the main mac is UPS - brand is APC, I can't remember the size but its enough for the RAID, the Mac Pro and the GUI monitor. Everything else Im not too worried about if power drops.
