I've got a 30" draw, I pull 70 pounds, I rock a whisker biscuit, and I shoot fixed blade. Basically, I want to remove as many moving parts as possible from the equation and just make good shots.

Edit: Please read my reply to this, I have had a change of heart. First I encourage you to read the recovery rate data published by the Indian Head Naval Base "A Comparative Study on the Effectiveness of Fixed Blade and Mechanical Broadheads". Just google it. Here's my counter argument: The meat cutting analogy: You're not slicing a steak into strips, you're trying to stab the biggest hole you can inside that steak, in the attempt to cut the important things inside. Thus if you wanted to make the biggest hole you can in that steak would you force an open pair of scissors through it or a chef's knife? The blades are open and cutting the moment they leave the bow, acting as a second set of vanes steering the arrow. Yes in a controlled environment you're going to be able to tune accuracy of any head to a reasonable level. But in the real world the front vanes are going to catch more wind, and may cause issues in gusty conditions. Murphy's Law: The blades could not deploy, a screw could come loose, it could could come open inside your quiver, it come open in flight. Yes you're right things can happen, but if you spend even 25% the time you spend tuning your fixed blades to your specific arrows and bow, you could ensure that your mechs are going to be in good working order and work well with your setup. The flex argument is kind of moot, the fact that they flex is a good thing, it is better to flex than to break. It is also beneficial to have some flex to the blades to get around bone and continue into the soft tissue instead of deflecting off the bone and going off course. If you need a 2" blade to kill a white tail because you need that cutting surface, that is ridiculous. Why though? Sometimes you miss the vitals by 1/2", why not stack the deck in your favor, how many times have you shot a group and had a flyer? Just because a .223 can kill a deer, does that mean those of us who use a 30-06 are ridiculous?

I am coming back here to eat my words. I shot a young buck with my Grim Reaper 1 1/2" mechanical from a tree stand three weeks ago. I aimed at the sweet spot perfectly broadside just behind the shoulder. The buck jumped the string and I ended up going through the scapula, I watched the arrow enter high and stop, hanging out of the animal. As the buck turned to run the arrow came out of the entry hole and flipped through the air and he went on a full "death run". When I got to my arrow, there was a broken blade and the edges on the remaining two looked serrated with all the damage they took. The blood trail was very sparse, blood was only decent in the last 15 yards or so, it took me about an hour to find him. I recovered that buck after 120-130 yards, he was double lunged, but there was only 1 hole, 5 inches higher than I was aiming. After this experience I started looking into why my penetration was so poor out of my setup. I ended up landing on another youtube channel talking about Dr. Ashby and heavy, high FOC arrows, I'm sure you're aware of who I am referring to. After spending a week learning as much as I could I decided to switch to a cut on contact fixed blade. I picked up a set of 150gr Magnus Stinger 4 blades, my arrows with these are now 489gr. While I know these are light compared to what Dr. Ashby says is recommended, I did some bare shaft tuning and was hitting bullseyes at 40 yards. Two days ago I got to use them for real, a mature doe came into my shooting lane, she stopped quartering towards me at about 25 yards. I took a shot, the arrow entered her chest through the base of the neck, taking out the heart and one lung before cutting through two ribs on the far side and burying itself 6 inches into the dirt. The doe took the shot, jumped back, stood there looking around as if to see what hit her. She then turned and started bounding away before falling 30 yards away from where she was shot. The broadhead has since been resharpened and will be used again. I am now a believer, high FOC cut on contact fixed blades are the real deal and regardless of the lack of cutting diameter, they are more forgiving when things don't go as planned.

@@parker8691 Hmmm, good question, you know I don't even know the brand. See I live in a part of Canada without good bow shops so we have locals who kinda run shops out of their garages. Well this local I met is a true master and bought up bows from a failed outdoors store and helps people get all tuned up. SO he sold me one of his older releases. Never seen anyone else use this kind but it almost looks like a small pistol and instead of a barrel, its the caliper jaws of the release. I love it and am use to it. I'll find out the brand tho.. Shot a buck last week and it hit the shoulder blade. Didn't kill the deer. Shot a small doe and got it a week before that, but it bent the shit out of one of the blades. And the practice setting ends up bending the blades too after awhile. I'm over them and going to single bevel high FOC since I'll likely never shoot over 30 yards anyway.

Sevr makes an awesome mechanical. The blades move out of the way for bones and then return to their normal position. You can also use the same head you hunt with for target practice. Just insert a screw into the head that locks the blades closed. They now also have a 150 grain designed for crossbows.

@caniswolf3394
@caniswolf3394 5 лет назад
Match the weight of the field point to the weight of the broadhead and you're good. Most of the idea of the use of field points is to make all the tuning adjustments to your bow "before" you use your broadheads. Some archers will use their broadheads after setting up their bow as a way to "fine tune" it a little further to get a more "pin-point" accuracy, but that's not completely necessary.
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 5 лет назад
Both field points and broadheads are manufactured to weigh the same! Just make sure if you're shooting 100 grain points you get 100 grain broadheads. This is the most common weight for broadheads. Hope this helps!

It's interesting to me to see how we keyboard warriors join in the fight lol.lol... (as my wife calls me at times hehe) Anyway, Turned the magical 60 this month OMG time flies lol. Been shooting archery since I was 4. Anyway, Wanted to chime in here. For a half of a century, I have been deer and big game hunting with arrows. ( pheasants, doves, ducks etc as well) What I can say is you are 100 percent right and 100 percent wrong :-) For much of my early life hunting, there were only fixed blades....kinda. You had a standard blade that looked a lot like the old flint tips from native Americans and then the other. The fixed blade, but not really, because they are razorblades anchored onto a shaft. I have seen a massive amount of failures in this realm. So no, fixed do not have fewer failures if you take the time to pay attention and to buy decent stuff. You can get 12 fixed or mechanical on Amazon for just a few dollars... And they will fail you. Regardless of fixed or mechanical. Then you can spend 30 or 40 or 50 or more on three broadheads whether mechanical or fixed. Whether these are "fixed" or mechanical they will normally be very reliable and not fail you. A "fixed blade" that has razor blade attachments is not fixed and those attached razors? They fail, they crack, they fall off, they wiggle and they cause mayhem lol. As of late, I use a combination of muzzies and grim reaper 2-inch whitetails that expand to a 3-inch cut. Both are fantastic for what they are. These things are deadly and they have saved me two years in a row on a quartering shot that caught at an angle and rotated INTO the deer. I was told they can do this but never actually saw it or believed that "hype" Now I do. Like most things, value for the dollar at times mean you have to spend more than you thought on something good. For arrows, I have switched to Eastman 5mm Axis arrows, but there are a few Walmart arrows that are exceptional as well (and you get two or three for the cost of one Axis). Carbon express makes some real junk but also makes some fantastic arrows. Speed freaks have gotten me a lot of deer as have mossy oaks. Both fly straight and true. I was hesitant at 5mm arrows lol but now want to try the 4 mm hehe... am I nuts? I use 100grain tips with a 50-grain insert on 300 and 400 shafts. Depends on where I hunt and what. I have never had a problem with penetration. On the few hunts that I did not get passthrough with either fixed or mechanical, looking back I have to admit it was my fault, not the tool. Bad placement, not taking the time to make sure my blades were as sharp as I could make them etc. My failed blades? Muzzy and a few others have lost blades that were apparently cracked from the pkg because a part was still attached to the core. I also have a few mechanicals that are more of a hybrid. THese have great mechanical parts but also have a 3/4 inch fixed from blade so if deployment failed (never has) It still cuts a nice swath through the animal. Anyway, I know, I am babbling but hey.. I am officially a senior citizen now lol. I am entitled :-) . I came across your channel about a week ago and have watched a lot of your stuff. It is solid, fantastic, and down to earth. You talk very well, teach well, and are clear in your messaging. Many popular youtube channels are the opposite including a fairy I know lol. So... in the end guys n gals. Buy what you can afford and make them the best you can. Tune well, sharpen what you can and practice a lot. Now practice some more :-) Did I mention practice? lol Shoot what makes you comfortable, knowing that in this age you have the very best ever made in bows, arrows, and pointy things on the ends. Enjoy your hunts and be confident in yourselves that what you have is good enough and it does not need to cost an arm and a leg. Interestingly enough, I had a chance to start life anew so as a new dad as well as aged fella... my daughter will grow up in this era of the best hunting stuff ever :-)

Just showed up on my RU-vid feed again. A timeless never ending debate? After bow hunting for 50+ years with two & four blade fixed I see no reason to use mechanical heads. Why? From a PROPERLY tuned bow with the CORRECT arrow nearly every fixed head will perform. Even to ridiculously long distances. And if you know what you’re doing you can get field points AND fixed to the POI. Been doing that for years and years. I honestly believe many select mechanical heads because their equipment is NOT setup properly and they can’t get certain fixed heads to perform for them. It’s easier to screw on a small mechanical and “ bingo” these arrows are actually grouping.
@walter992
@walter992 3 года назад
Even though I use fixed blade almost exclusively you have a very one sided unfounded point of view on this topic. Most modern mechanical heads are on par with most fixed blade heads. I hunt with guys that use nothing but mechanical heads that perform exceptionally well. To each his own.
@KK-xn3yq

How is it unfounded? Mechanicals have more ways to fail then a fixed blade.
@walter992
@walter992 3 года назад
@@KK-xn3yq I didn't say they fail less or more. I said a "one sided" point of view is unfounded. Almost all penetration and durability test have many of today's mechanical head performing as good if not better than many fixed blade heads.

Fixed blades are just better Sharper/easier to sharpen You can get them heavier More durable Go through bone better Will never fail to open Plus most mechanicals have TERRIBLE mechanical advantage on the blade And you can still get some massive cut diameters Pass through is the goal people! a fixed blade is not gonna drop a deer in 25-30yds, my swhackers do most of the time, in a urban area this is very important. Going with your mind set that everything doesn't always go as planned, accidentally, shoot a fixed blade in a not so great area, good luck, been there, done that. Small twigs and branches are always present. Also your analogy of cutting meat sounds good to the novice or inexperienced but your not "just cutting meat" your trying to hemorrhage or destroy as much lung tissue, arteries, blood vessels, as possible.To each their own, after shooting over 13 deer with a swhacker, watching them run 25yds, stop, and look around, like what was that? then having them fall over, I'm sold, never had a fixed blade do that.
@gladegoodrich2297

Doesn't matter which one you use if you make a bad shot. Shot a deer with a rage poor penetration but did the job. Switched to Wac ems fixed blade. This year hit a deer in the front shoulder, 4" penetration and arrow fell out first 50' zero blood trail. Going back to Swhacker mechanical.

@nickmaloney5928
@nickmaloney5928 3 года назад
Broadheads vs fixed blades is a personal opinion. But heres a FACT. Make a good shot, and the animal will drop. Even if you shoot a field point through a deers heart (I know its illegal) the deer will drop. So shoot what you're comfortable shooting. All broadheads will kill deer. Yes, mechanical can fail. But so can any part of your bow.

Dude, your "steak knife" analogy is all wet. As the hide is not a vital organ, it serves absolutely no purpose to cut the hide on entry. By having the blades not deployed until the head passes though the hide they stay sharper and do massive internal damage. I have had mule deer, elk and black bear almost drop in their tracks when shot with the Shwacker 2.25 inch 125-grain broadhead. I have never once had to track one as every animal I have ever shot with those heads has fallen within sight. Additionally, they fly identical to 125 grain field points so there is no "tuning" required. (What a stupid industry created term!) If you find a fixed blade that can provide anywhere near that kind of performance please do let me know. The only advantage fixed blades have over mechanical is they are less expensive as they can be resharpened and reused. Those are facts, not opinion.
