WELCOME TO THE TRUE BRODOWN!! Yes, we are back with more Japanese Metal Week! Let's talk about Menkata Cottelee!! Let's GO! . . . I do not own the rights to the music in this video.
The "dreads" dude (who is also the brother of the drummer girl) was overweight and was told by doctors he had to lose weight or face serious health issues. They took some time off and he got healthy. When they did their comeback the fans were shocked he was so thin and some complained they liked him better when he was overweight. This song was released as a response to those fans. They are very influential to a lot of Japanese bands and musicians. A few other songs to check out are Yoshu Fukushu, What's up people, Hungry Pride, or Zetsubou Billy.
Just to clarify, the "Hormone" in their name is NOT the English word Hormone (like what is raging through teenagers). It is Horumon (ホルモン) which is the word for a type of barbecued tripe (pork or beef intestines), a very popular and traditional Japanese food.
Maximum the Hormone are the masters of the musical mash-up. They are primarily metal but how much you get depends on the song. They also have a sense of humor that I have always enjoyed. You have now listened to 3 of my top 5. There is still Unlucky Morpheus and X Japan to go.
When it comes to Necronomidol I actually like their dark wave song SKULLS IN THE STARS the most. Honorable mention: Shiina Hikari/Pikarin for the WTF factor.
Japan is the world's largest market for music on physical media and the second-largest overall music market after the US... but with only 1/3 of the population.
The Band, Maximum the Hormone. Formed in 1998 by Nao and Daisuke-Han Daisuke-Han: Jumping and Yelling Freak Ue-Chang: Slapping Bony Guy Maximum The Ryokun: Singing and Plucking little brother Nao: Thumping and Singing Big Sister
Dir En Grey, Dexcore, Nocturnal Bloodlust, and Deviloof are all different from each other and from the other bands you reacted to. Another one to check out is hanabie (花冷え。) with their song We Love Sweets (我甘党)
MTH is the name of the BAND. MAXIMUM THE RYO-KUN is the guitarist and also the brother of NAO-CHAN, the drummer and founder of the band. Other commenters have suggested many good contemporary metal bands with male musicians. To those I would add these slightly older bands: ONMYOUZA, D’ESPAIRS RAY, GIRUGAMESH. Also, check out a current female fronted Melodic Death Metal called UNLUCKY MORPHEOUS - start with BLACK PENTAGRAM. But you need also to go back to the beginning of Japanese Metal: X-JAPAN (look for concert footage from the 80’s, when they were young, hungry, and had BIG HAIR!), LOUDNESS, maybe EZO. And of course, the pioneering ladies of Japanese Metal, SHOW-YA. They are still making music today, but check out their original videos and concert footage from the 80’s of I AM THE STORM (WATASHI WA ARASHI) and GENKAI LOVERS. BAND-MAID has a harder, Metal-adjacent side, too. Watch two videos: DOMINATION (live), and MANERS + BLACK HOLE (live with no audience).
LOL. MTH is a genre of their own. They do what they want. They've got some great tunes that leave you confused but pumped. Try "Alien," or "Yoshu Fukushu."
MTH is very experimental & eclectic.. Some of their other songs are heavier. Tamu the drummer from Nemophila was inspired to take up drumming because of the drummer Nao. Akane from Band-Maid is also a Nao.fan.
Prior to a few years ago, the only Japanese band I listened to was Maximum the Hormone. The last few years I have listened to a lot of Japanese rock/metal. In my opinion the three most influential rock/metal female Japanese artists, especially to younger Japanese women, are Keiko Terada of Show-Ya, Nao of Maximum the Hormone and Saki of Nemophila and Mary's Blood.
@P in D² I can't argue with you about who is the better drummer because I am simply not qualified. I will say who are my favorites but when it comes to Japanese female drummers there are probably 7 or 8 on that list and I can't choose which is my favorite or even rank them.
@P in D² I will be seeing Band-Maid in Dallas this fall and I am very much looking forward to it. They seem to be one of those bands that needs to be seen in person. It will be Miku's birthday which can only add to the fun.
@P in D² Without a doubt Nao is the most influential - she showed them all that they could have a Life, Marriage, and Children and still have a career in music. I totally agree on Akane - BUT, my heart belongs to Haruna ...
love that daughter-san buys into MTH by the first wild change, she cracks a smile there and never loses it for the rest of the song. It takes dad-san a little more, but by the second poppy section, he's also smiling. Its what this band does, it brings happiness to your life!
They are indeed the original genre blenders. One thing though, MTH predates every comparison you made (except Chili Peppers) by several years. They aren't the Japanese 12 Foot Ninjas, 12 Foot Ninjas is the Australian MTH.
It's a music video. It has a long intro and outro. The song is in the middle. Here is a song that is all one genre that Maximum the Hormone did for the Anime 'Death Note'. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gyoHeEe401E.html Death Note is a top 4 anime and Maximum the Hormone is a top 4 Japanese metal band. They did another song for Death Note Jetsuo Billy? It's also excellent.
At least you didn't watch Koi no Sperm from them XD Some dudes bands Galneryus (Power Metal), X Japan (kinda emo metal from the 90s), Crystal Lake (metalcore)... Though it feels a bit bad you only checked Gimme Chocolate from Babymetal and don't get really the idea of what they are. I would also check Road of Resistance before you finish your japanese week, to find what they do more commonly.
LOL I knew you guys were the Real Deal after this one. 1. you instantly got the SOAD likeness... MTH was formed by the Drummer Nao and her younger brother (dreadlocks) Ryo in 1998! 2. You tried to stonewall it, but I saw the smile on your face and could tell you 'got it". MTH are totally Unique - but as you can tell, that is not a bad thing. BTW - all female Japanese Metal bands have been a 'thing' for a long time, and there has been an annual All Female Metal Band Festival in Tokyo since 1987 (hosted by Show Ya, mentioned by Greg above). And I'll second Unlucky Morpheus. also Galneryus (Japanese Dream Theater) Edit: if you got this far - Gacharic Spin, Hanabie, Hakane, Trident, Sokoninaru (Prog), Doll$Boxx, Quadratum, Mary's Blood, Scandal . . . (tried to avoid dupes)
they love watching reaction videos to this song and put the reaction vids on their website. they support the reaction community not like big corporations giving copyrights left and right.
An instrumental band that is awesome is Asterism. Gyze plays melodic death metal. Galneryus is very guitarorianted but man he is good! Hanabie is an upcoming band. Crossfaith is another awesome band Passcode is a very different band. Blending lots of genres that shouldn't work but it does. About CC. Most Japanese bands is fine with their own market but more and more bands make Eng subs. RU-vid takes their bands over the border anyways. After Japan you have to react to Bloodywood / Dana Dan (with CC) from India. Or Arka'n from Togo Africa. Tears of the dead is a good start.
If you are running out of bands, then 88KASYO Junrei are obvious. They are not quite metal - Math-Metal? - but incorporate metal elements, as do Band-Maid and Sokinanaru. 88KJ’s bassist/vocalist - Margaret Hiroi is gender transient and the others male, and Sokinanaru’s bassist/joint vocalist is a woman and the others male. MTH have been around for 24 years - about as long as System of a Down. If there are parallels, there is no evidence that the Japanese band were mainly influenced by the US one. Possibly the bands referenced were influenced by MtH - there is a lot of originality in Japanese music, and genre fluidity, even if the basic categories are borrowed from the West
Ok what the fuck is wrong with people recommending songs to reactors. They are looking for metal. Ok you love this one but it is NOT a 1st exposure song for metal heads. For Maximum the Hormone the starting song is Yoshu Fukushu. As for your looking for bands with male members here are some suggestions, Ninjen Isu, Dir En Grey, Crystal Lake are all male. Classic metal Japan is all about Loudness and X-Japan. Do not sleep on Unlucky Morpheus which is a mixed band with incredible musicianship.
nice reaction ! Maximum the Hormone 『恋のスペルマ』 Music Video 野外フェス映像ver. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AUeRiPyjFH4.html please reaction 🙇
RAGLAIA: DON'T CHANGE YOUR MIND, BRIDEAR: BRAVE NEW WORLD, NINGEN ISU: HEARTLESS SCAT, SHOW YA: WATASHI WA ARASHI. I DARE YOU TO REACT TO THESE SONGS. MORE STRAIGHT FORWARD ROCK/METAL.
@P in D² ACTUALLY I THINK THE GUY IS RACIST AND MISOGYNISTIC. I AM WONDERING IF HE CAN BE CONVERTED TO BEING A BETTER PERSON? I FEEL HE IS MUCH MUCH LESS HARSH REACTING TO EUROPEAN MEN BANDS.
@P in D² @P in D² Doesn't matter - in the end the Clicks and Comments end up being Recommendations and possible Views for MTH, Lovebites, Band Maid, etc . . . viewers will make up their own minds. IMO they've actually shown respect for all the bands they've reacted too, didn't even say they 'hated' Baby Metal - although Doki Doki was a terrible choice for a first reaction for someone looking for Metal.
@@Patrick_H. THERE IS AN OLD SAYING ABOUT PEOPLE THAT DON'T KNOW SH*T FROM SHINOLA. IF YOU CAN'T SEE HIM CR*PPING ALL OVER THE JBANDS YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE, YOU SHOULD SUBSCRIBE.
Hope you two don't just move on from top 4 bands and stay on the Japanese world of metal/rock requests and do plenty of exploring. Its a pretty exciting place to be and that's what is needed in todays world of BLAND music. Maximum the Hormone aren't classic metal but boy are they interesting. People have suggested Hanabie. (Hanabee-ayh) used to do a lot of MTH covers so you will see their influences if you check out We love sweets.
You described it accurately- a bunch of dishes all mixed together. The trouble is that usually makes a bowl of slop. Not my taste in music at all. Sorry.
